  • What does a child gain by being educated in an Islamic school? How does this impact a child’s Muslim identity - and does it create challenges for children later on, when they enter mainstream education systems such as colleges and universities? We learn more about this from Farrah Marfatia, the Principal of Maingate Islamic Academy. She shares her thoughts with us on better understanding the role of Islamic schools and its impact on children and society as a whole today.

You never want to see someone end up in a horrible accident if the bridge out in front of them and they can't see it because of the conditions of the day. . You get their attention some how.so they don't crash. Confused people who resist God's instructions or refuse to believe the gospel of good news need to be warned the consequences of doing so. Rejecting the Savior of the World because your were taught wrong as a child doesn't excuse you as a adult from the judgment that will be required of you. What did you do with my Son Jesus?. Did you go away from Him in reverse? Did you remain where you are in neutral? Or did you go forward into His arms of Salvation, comfort, peace and salvation from the eternal flames that await the unbelievers? If it was number three, then you made the right eternal choice.

I agree that the what the principal just said and be acknowledged by the government. Then as Muslims our children can participate to be in those schools. Most of us can't afford to pay but we do want our family and friends and schools to work together. Please can we also unite with AKDN and focus canada and team up with the Agha khan Academy as we are also Muslims and would truly love and appreciate our children to be included and get them to fund the Muslim schools as well as we all are part of muslim ummah means saving our youth or young boys and girls with the right understanding as the principal just mentioned it's our identity who are we and as Canadian Muslims how can we bring our knowledge and wisdom to a balance and understanding without forcing but consistency and let our students have there debate and explore and express as well and not to be shutdown but have a freedom of speech at same time with the government involvement will help wether the childs need are met by arts programs or by disabilities if those who are facing those challenges or some extra curricular activities combined with Arabic alphabetics taught very early on to help in understanding the Quran and it's meanings and how to apply in our daily life as the teachings are very ethical and he'll make them make better decisions without being represed of their opinions of expression is extremely important in today's life.

That is what I despise. Thousands of Muslim and South Asian immigrants moving to Christian nations and refusing to integrate themselves and their families into the society of the countries they live in. Instead of trying to teach their children Muslim values which are totally alien to the nations of Europe, the U.S. or Canada try teaching your children Christian Biblical values and try to see how much happier and safer your children could grow up to be. So many people in our so called Christian nations see Muslim values as nothing but immense cruelty and suffering, indifference to other people, violence and death.

    Hi Farrah,
I agree that unfortunately often people "inherit" their identity from their parents, society, parent's culture, religion and history. My question is when do we become independent thinkers who decide for ourselves. We are not a bunch of calves growing up into cows. Although a first generation immigrant I feel I belong to this great country and do not need others to accept me one way or another. As a matter of fact I have more differences with the culture of the country that I was born and lived in for 26 years than Canada, because I think independently and it happens that I have more similarities with Canadian culture. As well my son never felt with a lost identity. .
We are not and do not have to become our past generations, this is about all of us, immigrant or not. We are smarter than that.

I'm not sure what exactly your point is. Culture and religion are two different identities. Sure you feel disconnected to your culture, I'm more Canadian than you perhaps in your context. I came here as a child and of course I love my country Canada, I don't have much association or familiarity with the culture of my parents country however I do live and love my identity as a Muslim, and that is something I need to make sure my kids know as well, understand it and come to love it. I can see your confused and not sure of the difference between the importance of culture vs religion and a mix of a little but of both.

So Islam gave you identity (a group identity) and you did not make your very own individual identity. To me it is like "group think" where it is not acceptable to "think outside the box." You might say, "Yes, we think outside the box" but how do you know that? It is all fine, I am not criticizing just stating my perspective. Everyone desires to "belong" or be accepted for their good nature. I view Islam as a mass group moving about thinking the same being controlled by the Koran (or it's leaders). I view westerners as racing around, claiming territory (or things), rewarding one another for individual (or family) achievements. They for most part are controlled by the media and their own governments. A smaller part is aware of this control. I think also that a smaller part of Islam followers are also aware. Ok, I really know nothing. This is just my perspective at this time but I am still learning as everyone (hopefully) is also learning and open to reason. I realize this video was about schools and I did not respond likewise.

Islam gives you a sense of purpose and humanity requires a sense of purpose. How can it be that our constituent parts our tongue are ears our eyes are all with purpose and yet the aggregate of them all is without? Islam also gives you freedom; When You believe in the hereafter, the sticks and carrots of other human beings cannot control you nearly as much. Furthermore Islam is based on empirical science. For instance how can something come from nothing. How can you expect someone to believe that things come from nothing and call that scientific; when there is no empirical observation of that ever happening?

People have negative opinions about religious schools because kids are sent there by parents who hope the school will teach them how to be a well rounded believer.
But what happens at home? Are the parents modeling these same principals through example?
This is when religious schools are viewed as not having any real value; when the students can't identify with its beliefs.

Ever heard of mannequin challenge ??? Yeah that comes from " free thinking " people with too much time in their hands and mind that they can't come up with anything more productive than a rediculous challenge that neither hurts them but doesn't benefit them either. It could have been 1117 as you poked fun at but even then you probably had your rediculous people like you do today. Minus the technology 😀

Assalamualaikum...all the best to Madam Farrah Marfatia and this channel. I'm interested in the question "How does Islam foster the sense of identity" and wud like to give my opinion based on my own experience. I believe it is not because you are the children of immigrant, that u r surrounded by non-muslims and living in a non-muslim country, and makes u feel that living in an Islamic community gives u the sense of identity. I am a Malay Muslim living in Malaysia, an Islamic country surrounded by practising Muslims and Muslim culture. To be honest I don't feel that i have an identity and i feel that i don't fit in, in any social group until i start practising, learning and understanding Islam in my late 20's and I am still learning. Islam make sense of me living, makes me understand how the world works, showed me how to live and it showed me what is wrong and what is right. I mean every single person have their opinions and perspectives. Every single person wud say that they are right n they r good. Every single person wud give good advice to you. It's a headache...But how do we determine which "good or right" is the RIGHT ONE? How do we make our choices? What standards or guidelines are we going to base our choices upon? Islam gives us this guidelines in making the right choice, how to handles things, etc. When we know that we are making the RIGHT choice/stand from all the "rights" it gives us a sense of empowerment. I feel that this empowerment give us our true identity. It gives you confident and makes you feel strong. You feel right with yourself. You love yourself and in turn you love others.

Well if you want to love and teach and educate you your kids in Islam and learn there, but if you want your kids be taught in a normal school to any education that's different. but mentioning about a hajibing shouldn't always be monitory for life. one child didn't wear a hajib and the rest did? Hajibs shouldn't be all your life it should be a choice, what happens if a girl doesn't want to wear it. Anyou are forcing a child to wear it if she loses her freedom of choice.

I actually weared hijab when I was small in schools only to protect my head from lices and I started to really wear it outside as my lifestyle when I got my first period and when my body changes as I grow I cover more and feel comfortable.. and I am used to cover now and I feel uncomfortable if I take it off.. so hijab is something positive for me.

"I know men; and I tell you that Jesus Christ is not a man. Superficial minds see a resemblance between Christ and the founders of empires, and the gods of other religions. That resemblance does not exist. There is between Christianity and whatever other religions the distance of infinity..." So says Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), emperor of France. "Well then, I will tell you. Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne and I myself have founded great empires; but upon what did these creations of our genius depend? Upon force. Jesus alone founded His empire upon love, and to this very day millions will die for Him. . . . I think I understand something of human nature; and I tell you, all these were men, and I am a man; none else is like Him: Jesus Christ was more than a man. . . . I have inspired multitudes with such an enthusiastic devotion that they would have died for me . . . but to do this is was necessary that I should be visibly present with the electric influence of my looks, my words, of my voice. When I saw men and spoke to them, I lightened up the flame of self-devotion in their hearts. . . . Christ alone has succeeded in so raising the mind of man toward the unseen, that it becomes insensible to the barriers of time and space. Across a chasm of eighteen hundred years, Jesus Christ makes a demand which is beyond all others difficult to satisfy; He asks for that which a philosopher may often seek in vain at the hands of his friends, or a father of his children, or a bride of her spouse, or a man of his brother. He asks for the human heart; He will have it entirely to Himself. He demands it unconditionally; and forthwith His demand is granted. Wonderful! In defiance of time and space, the soul of man, with all its powers and faculties, becomes an annexation to the empire of Christ. All who sincerely believe in Him, experience that remarkable, supernatural love toward Him. This phenomenon is unaccountable; it is altogether beyond the scope of man's creative powers. Time, the great destroyer, is powerless to extinguish this sacred flame; time can neither exhaust its strength nor put a limit to its range. This is it, which strikes me most; I have often thought of it. This it is which proves to me quite convincingly the Divinity of Jesus Christ."

To be civil requires good conduct does it not ?
Who is good conduct taught from and where is it taught ?
      Freedom.
How free are we to stay healthy as we please ?
To live as long we please ?
To have as much wealth, and happiness as we please ?
Is a particular set of beliefs being dictated to us without our knowledge,
or are we choosing them as we please ?
We have nothing more than the free will to do what we can, in the circumstances we are placed in.
      Democracy.

No ladies’HIJAB found in the Quran
(The word HIJAB is used in the Quran but NOT for ladies)
It’s simple as per Quran verses 24.31 and 33.59
If you read directly from the words of the Quran (without adding words in brackets ) you will know that root of the word KHIMAR just means COVER
    And the Quran 24.31 says:
“… Put forth COVERINGs over the JAYBs…”
    -
The importance is about COVERING the JAYB
And the rest is distraction in the name of explanations- which are away from the original concept revealed in the Quran
But promoted by explanations of the F!rqa (sect) chiefs
Just making a fuss of outer show and appearance- will not be helpful.
It’s the deeds that are accounted in front of Allah on the judgment day

11:34. Totally against public funding for religious schools because it will have a reaction and it will not be just. There are enough educated brothers and sisters to volunteer their time. Private schools can never be at par with public schools as far as funding goes. Look at the playground sizes, the buildings, maintenance etc. Work in tandem with public schools in a madrassa/ weekend/ online model. It will be much better. Take pride in the Muslim-Canadian identity. How many muslim countries will give you citizenship when you tell them 'I am Muslim'?

Sad witness who found that back siding is easy. She has identity in the Islam. Wow how weak. So thinking she can climb into heaven without Christ is really the most common door to the fires of Hell. "No one comes to the Father but by me," JESUS declares.Praying 5 times day? She is very confused.Learn, you cannot earn your way into the real heaven through prayer exercises or traditions. You are saved only by faith in Christ's work on the Cross for your sins and the sins of the whole world. The power in the blood is the only thing that washes away our sins. You can't intellectualize or talk your way out of truth just because it feels good or you think your smarter than God or someone taught you wrong. Reject the 'faith requirement' and 'free gift of salvation' in any way and you send yourself to the very real fires of hell. God mad it simple. If it isn't simple it isn't God. God has a free open door to heaven to the obedient. The disobedient will not find heaven after this life. Only Believers go to heaven not those who want to climb up some other way. God's words will judge us. The bible is the first original truth and counterfeits written 7 hundred years latter cannot change it. Sorry to shock you. Angels cannot preach to men about it. It's left to men and women of the faith to teach and reach out to the lost. That's why I write about it here. Not to offend or hurt anyone feelings but to remind those who think it's o.k. to flirt with anything but the TRUTH, that it has eternal consequences.....Don't be tricked out of the truth.

+Thomas Shuster Muslims believe in Jesus. I don't think you're setting a very good example yourself by calling somebody with different beliefs 'weak'. It shows a clear lack of tolerance and presumes that your faith is the best one. Remember, whether or not you agree, one's religion and faith is a personal thing that all should be free to choose. Also I don't see why you think it is wrong to pray 5 times a day. Regardless of one's faith, showing devotion to your deity can only be a good thing. And, even if one deems prayers to be unnecessary, they can have a spiritual benefit for those performing them. It is a personal endeavour that you can't dictate. As well, the "free gift of salvation" doesn't mean you have a free pass to act however you want in this life as it is basically suggesting you will automatically be absolved of all responsability for wrong-doing. I suggest you stop promoting such views and instead encourage people to be open-minded and sensible, loving of all humans as that was the true message that Jesus Christ tried to impart.

+Thomas shuster you are right about only believers going to heaven. Jesus did bring the true book of God and he did preach the one true religion. The only part I do not understand is that while Jesus was preaching to do good and be kind to others as this will lead them to heaven, why would god then ordain that Jesus has died for your sins and now all of you who believe in him will go to heaven. Does this not discredit and disregard his very teachings? This logically does not make sense.
