What are the Satanic Verses? | Dr. Shabir Ally

  • The Satanic Verses is a term used in academic literature to refer to purported verses of the Quran which, according to some narratives, were once recited by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and taken to be a part of the Quran, but soon after denounced by the Prophet as having a Satanic origin and removed, leaving behind a strict monotheistic text. It became infamous because from a non-Muslim point of view, it would seem that the Prophet could not distinguish between what is Satanic and what is from God. Dr. Shabir Ally explains that the story doesn't arise from the most authentic narratives of the Prophet's life, and he shares John Burton's theory about how the story was concocted and why Muslims embraced it.

Many modern Muslim scholars have rejected the story. Arguments for rejection are found in Muhammad Abduh's article "Masʾalat al-gharānīq wa-tafsīr al-āyāt",[year needed] Muhammad Husayn Haykal's Hayat Muhammad (1933), Sayyid Qutb's Fi Zilal al-Quran (1965), Abul Ala Maududi's Tafhim-ul-Quran (1972) and Muhammad Nasiruddin al-Albani's Nasb al-majānīq li-nasf al-gharānīq.
Haykal (1933) points out the many forms and versions of the story and their inconsistencies and argues that "the contextual flow of Surah 'al Najm' does not allow at all the inclusion of such verses as the story claims". Haykal quotes Muhammad Abduh who pointed out that the "Arabs have nowhere described their gods in such terms as 'al gharaniq'. Neither in their poetry nor in their speeches or traditions do we find their gods or goddesses described in such terms. Rather, the word 'al ghurnuq' or 'al gharniq' was the name of a black or white water bird, sometimes given figuratively to the handsome blond youth." Lastly, Haykal argues that the story is inconsistent with Muhammad's personal life and is completely against the spirit of the Islamic message.

Aqa Mahdi Puya has said that these fake verses were shouted out by the Meccans to make it appear that it was Muhammad who had spoken them; he writes:
"Some pagans and hypocrites planned secretly to recite words praising idolatry alongside the recitation of the Holy Prophet, while he was praying, in such a way that the people would think as if they were recited by him. Once when the Holy Prophet was reciting verses 19 and 20 of Najm one of the pagans recited: "Tilkal gharani-ul ula wa inna shafa-atahuma laturja"-(These are the lofty (idols), verily their intercession is sought after.) As soon as this was recited the conspirators shouted in delight to make the people believe that it was the Holy Prophet who said these words. Here, the Quran is stating the general pattern the enemies of the messengers of Allah followed when they were positively convinced that the people were paying attention to the teachings of the messengers of Allah and sincerely believing in them. They would mix their false doctrines with the original teachings so as to make the divine message a bundle of contradictions. This kind of satanic insertions are referred to in thus verse, and it is supported by Ha Mim: 26. It is sheer blasphemy to say that satanic forces can influence the messengers of Allah.

One would expect that God would make sure that his prophets never give a wrong message to his people and this is not impossible for God to do as He is all seeing and all knowing .

*No falsehood can approach it from the front, nor from the rear (i.e. neither directly nor indirectly). It is sent-down from Allah the All-Wise, the All-Praiseworthy.* Quran 41:42 Can it be any clearer?
*If he (Messenger) were to invent any saying in Our Name, We would certainly have seized him by the right hand and We would then have surely cut off the artery of his heart.* Qur’an 69:44-46 In other words, the Messenger wasn't able to say anything from his own whims and desires, yet Satan was allowed and able to interject with verses? lol
*Say, "If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants."* 17:88
*“We indeed have sent down the recital (the Qur’an) and indeed We are its Protector (from any corruption or interference).”* 15:9
Even the heavens were sealed shut for the jinn during the revelation of the Quran, and to this day.
*And we have sought to reach the heaven; but found it filled with stern guards and flaming fires.* 72:8

Keep in mind- Mohammed didn’t read or write so although someone next to him was always writing it doesn’t mean they could interpret to people the wisdom that Mohammed had. I hate when Muslims call Mohammed illiterate because he was the opposite- reading and writing is actually beneath someone that has divine wisdom. They don’t need to read or write to attain such wisdom as these were the ways of the ancients. Lastly, can you imagine trying to have a simple conversation with Mohammed or any other divine being and always saying “Peace be upon Him” after you say his name. I know Mohammed wouldn’t even listen to what you’d have to say after hearing it every time you say his name. By studying Quran, one can clearly see that the Person who taught this book to his followers can never indulge in idolatry. Quran is very very clear in the matter of Monotheism, no other religion can compete Islam in the teachings of Monotheism.
The story came from Biographies and unauthentic Hadiths, written after more than 100 years of the death of the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w and were written by the people far from the centre of Islam I.e Macca and Madina, forefathers of these writers were generally hard opponents of Islam. Therefore they were not able to fully grasp the clarity of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w and Quran regarding the concept of Monotheism.
To become true Muslim, one have to believe in Quran as the final revelation from the Lord,

I think one of the strongest pieces of evidence in the Quran about how these satanic verses don’t exist is when you look at the revelation order, the surrah that was brought to the Prophet, peace be upon him, right before An Najam is Al Ikhlas. The same surrah that states Allah is one and does not beget children. Allat, Uzza, and Manat were believed to have been daughters of Allah, and while An Najm denounces them specifically, Al Ikhlas denounced them and ALL other idols worshipped.
So if the satanic verses truly did exist as many try to push, why aren’t there hadith of people asking the prophet “hey wait a minute you revealed just the other day we shouldn’t worship anyone else.”? If we can record everything about the prophet, even fabrications, you would think at least ONE person would question the Prophet on this issue. Not to mention the leader Idol of Mecca’s 360 idols was Hubal, someone that was not recognized by these satanic verses. You really think the Meccan leaders would be like “ahhh, at least we have Allat, Manat, and Uzza!”? Hubal is the idol they went into battle with! You would think someone would be upset about this, no? But no, this hadith claims everyone was happy, from the muslims to the pagans, until the correction.
I refuse to believe that this hadith is true. Even without going into how God will forever preserve the message of the Quran and would correct the Prophets if they ever erred, it just doesn’t make sense.

Allah has very clearly said in the first five verses of chapter 53 under discussion- that the Holy Prophet Saww speaks what is revealed and does not speak out of by his whim. and is neither misguided or astray. He speaks what Allah inspires him. The revealed Quran is the book from GOD and mankind has been openly challenged to produce the like of it or even a single sura. So far as traditions and collections of background is concerned it needs to be based on sound and tested premises. Many stories or statements do appear but then all are not authentic. Other Gods have been mentioned in all literature like the Cow worshipped by the Israelites or the idols confronting Moses etc. The main theme from Adam to Prophet Mohamed has always been One God. And even that message was eclipsed. The fact is the message was conveyed, the values and the objectives of life have been conveyed. And yes deception and falsehood will also raise its head as if it’s true. Mankind still has to sift through this mix to discover truth and will continue to face falsehood masquerading as truth.
And the final truth is that there is one GOD and he sent down the revelations for his creation. The sum total of these Revelation s and instruction is Guidance to achieve the Noble status which a human has been designed for and can become.

He is interpreting the Quran using the Hadith, and it's wrong. The correct interpretation of those verses (22:52-54) is that Allah allows the Devil to TEMPT the messengers and Prophets, by interfering with their wishes, however, it doesn't say that they were added in the form of verses of the Quran, but something else (opinions, ideas etc.). Then that something else is nullified by the Quran (or the Revelation given to a Prophet, in general) however those whose hearts are hardened/sealed will follow those deviant suggestions instead of following the Revelation of God, that is the fitnah/trial.
An example we have today is the Halal/Haram food debate. The Quran (6:145) CLEARLY says that ALL good food is HALAL except: what is killed in the name of other gods, what is already dead, blood, and the meat of pigs. What do the majority of Muslims follow? They have a whole list of more haram animals that are in fact halal. When confronted by this fitnah in the form of doubt, the hypocrites will choose to follow the opinions of the sheikhs (who are following the opinions of those before), while the true believers will choose to follow the direct message of God.
Also when the Quran (41:41-42) says that it's an invincible book, and falsehood cannot approach it from before it or from behind it, this is what it means, that whatever argument we bring against it, the Quran itself has a counterargument inside it hidden somewhere, waiting for a believer to understand it. The Quran (25:33) also says "whatever argument they put forth, we give you a better argument and explanation"

    Here’s a basic explanation:
The Satanic Verses refer to an event in Muhammad's life which Muslim scholars call The Story of the Cranes. It is a time when Muhammad recited, as part of the Qur’an, that the polytheistic gods of Mecca were valid. Some time after saying this he withdrew these verses from the Qur'an and said they were inspired by Satan.
This event is recorded and accepted as authentic by the earliest Islamic biographers: Ibn Ishaq[1] and Ibn Sa'd[2]. It was a standard part of how the early Muslims told the life of Muhammad. Al-Tabari[3] records several accounts of the event, Ibn Taymiyyah[4] accepts it as authentic, and Imam al-Bukhari[5] gives a partial account. However, Orthodox Islam now rejects the event.

(Ibn Ishaq, Sirat Rasul Allah, translated as, The Life of Muhammad, (translator: A. Guillaume), Karachi: Oxford University Press, 1998, pp. 165-167)
Now the apostle was anxious for the welfare of his people [the Quraysh], wishing to attract them as far as he could. It has been mentioned that he longed for a way to attract them, and the method he adopted is what Ibn Hamid told me that Salama said M. b. Ishaq told him from Yazid b. Ziyad of Medina from M. b. Ka`b al-Qurazi: When the apostle saw that his people turned their backs on him and he was pained by their estrangement from what he brought them from God he longed that there should come to him from God a message that would reconcile his people to him. Because of his love for his people and his anxiety over them it would delight him if the obstacle that made his task so difficult could be removed; so that he meditated on the project and longed for it and it was dear to him. Then God sent down "By the star when it sets your comrade errs not and is not deceived, he speaks not from his own desire,"[Q. 53:1-3] and when he reached His words "Have you thought of al-Lat and al-`Uzza and Manat the third, the others"[Q. 53:19-20], Satan, when he was meditating upon it, and desiring to bring it (sc. reconciliation) to his people, put upon his tongue "these are the exalted Gharaniq [a high flying crane] whose intercession is approved". When the Quraysh heard that, they were delighted and greatly pleased at the way in which he spoke of their gods and they listened to him; while the believers were holding that what their prophet brought from their Lord was true, not suspecting a mistake or a vain desire or slip, and when he reached the prostration and the end of the Sura in which he prostrated himself the Muslims prostrated themselves when their prophet prostrated confirming what he brought and obeying his command, and the polytheists of the Quraysh and others who were in the mosque prostrated when they heard the mention of their gods, so that everyone in the mosque believer and unbeliever prostrated, except al-Walid b. al-Mughira who was an old man who could not do so, so he took a handful of dirt from the valley and bent over it. Then the people dispersed and the Quraysh went out, delighted at what had been said about their gods, saying, "Muhammad has spoken of our gods in splendid fashion. He alleged in what he read that they are the exalted Gharaniq whose intercession is approved".

Mr Rushdie was completely wrong to call them the Satanic Verses. He should have called his book "The False Verses".
Both the Bible and Quran contain a fundamental lie, which proves that they were written by men, and that 'god' is not real. At the time of writing, men did not know how man was created. A real 'god' would have known about evolution.
Why did 'god' create two totally different books when he had only one message? They were written by men who wished to inflict their different rules on their own people.
The same applies to the creation of the universe. Men 'guessed' it must have been created by something they couldn't see, so they wrote it into the Bible and Quran to help convince people that a 'god' existed.
The origins of the universe are, as yet, unknown, but to think it was a 'god', shows a very primitive mind.
There is ample information on the internet to prove evolution is the absolute truth, but the primitive mind may not understand it.
Religions are still debating evolution because they are 100 years out of date and they want to maintain a belief in a 'God'.
Evolution has been proved by REAL scientists to be the absolute truth, so a 'GOD' did NOT create 'MAN'.

*Can you explain why your Prophet prayed to 4 gods. Allah, Al Lat, Al Uzza and Manat. And can you tell me if that is SHIRK ?*
