    I used to do "ramp" work for airlines, and can tell you a few reasons bags get lost. There's a limited number of bagwells/carousels in the bagroom areas of airports, so multiple flights from the same airline will be dropped into the same carousel, and it's up to the baggage attendant to sort through them and make sure they get to the right flight by placing them in the correct baggage cart. Often times, if the attendant is overwhelmed (which is a fairly regular occurrence), a bag might get thrown in the wrong cart heading to the wrong flight and the ultimately the wrong airport; and this wrong flight/wrong place thing can happen at several different steps in the process: either in the baggage room at your departing airport, at any of your intermediate airports if you have connecting flights, or even at your arriving airport if it gets put in the wrong cart. This is especially common if the airline is flying to two locations with very similar airport codes, like Portland (PDX) and Phoenix (PHX), or one of the three different San Jose airports located across the world. Your bag might also be dropped too late by the ticketing agents, which means it'll end up stranded at your departing airport, because the flight you were taking has already been loaded and sealed up. If you're traveling internationally, there's an additional layer of things that can go wrong because you have to deal with customs agents.
    I don't know why I typed all that out. What a pointless exercise.

    Sometimes you don't have a choice in getting the text codes, as that may be the only option a (Government) website offers you. The other problem is when your authenticating app is on a phone that bricked itself (happened to me). This isn't just a thing of putting the app on a new phone and continue, because the authentication app is registered against the device that bricked itself. Solvable in the end, but it takes a lot of effort.

    "They are awful" is terrible reasoning.
    Security is about expected scenarios.
    Sure, most of the mobile infrastructure is basically not encrypted by modern standards. But the window of opportunity for an attack here is basically non existent if you are not specifically targeted with a high amount of resources. Some people tend to forget that some measures are actively worse then nothing. And those just get jumbled in confusing the matter with statements like this. Mobile TAN is a lot better then nothing. As it eliminates realistic attack vectors and opens none. It even has advantages over a yubikey, so this is relevant here. The advantage being: You can deactivate the phone remotely via the provider.

    • @dtrns9
      @dtrns9 Před rokem

      I mean, you don’t need to be some prominent figure to be targeted in a SIM swap attack. It’s happened to plenty of regular, average, every day people. And while it is better than nothing, a YubiKey or other hardware 2FA device should still be preferred. If the website you’re using doesn’t have support for YubiKeys, and only offers SMS, then use SMS but use the YubiKey whenever possible

It's really easy to break. No need to cut the cable or anything. You should check out "Lock Picking Lawyer" youtube channel to show how useless most locks are. He used a 7mm impression tube that slips right in to unlock it. If you have a bike you definitely need to check out his channel before spending money on a bike lock.

    2:34 Samsung's SmartTag+ tags also use UWB. In fact, the system's even better than Apple's as you can use your camera's phone and AR to locate exactly where the tag is (yes not just direction but also height!). Unfortunately, just like Airtags are limited to iDevices, Samsung tags are only working with Samsung devices. (In a video that tested Tile, Airtag, and SmartTag in Amsterdam, the SmartTag also ended up being the one with the best coverage, with Tile coming in last, however that's far from a scientific test and your mileage may vary based on region and prevalent smartphone brand there.)
