the truth is: Russ is a powerful psyker. He didnt want to use it.(remember when he lands on Prospero and his bared Rage makes all the Glass windows of Tizca explode with it's unleashed psychic ferocity) but he started listening to the runes at the end of the heresy. He's known about Chaos but didnt know he was a minor warp god put into a flesh vessel by the emperor.

Russ has growth but he also failed drastically a lot and in major ways. His vehement opposition to psychers in the council of Nichea, his attempt to teach Angron a lesson, his absolute failure to follow the Emperor’s orders in regards to Magnus which assured the thousands sons turn to the war master and his failure to kill Horus when he had the chance.
He’s the executioner but absolutely failed that role by staying his hand against Horus in the hope he could bring him back. Which led to his legion getting wrecked and Leman getting injured and out of the fight during the Siege.
I like him but the fallout from his hubris was massive.

It's a muddled truth. All Primarch are made from the warp, it's a matter of which ones succumb to temptation. Until we know the fate of Russ in the current setting, it's safe to say he hasn't fallen to chaos and is using his abilities to survive like Corax is. The wolves are the emperor's executioners for a reason, that is their truth in my opinion.

Perhaps Magnus was speaking of the Legion's Lupine nature beyond the Wulfen, of how the Space Wolves are linked on more than a physical level, that there is a psychic link connecting them, much like the Black Rage curse of the Blood Angels connect them. Perhaps the Wolves have their own version of the Orks "Waaagh" that the Runes on the Space Wolves gear keep from bursting out.
That or this is reaching... there is a supernatural corruption on Fenris itself and the materials harvested on that world. I remember in the Space Wolf second Omnibus that one of the Dark Angels calls Ragnar's Frostblade a "Fell" weapon, implying there is something supernatural about it.

I assume that there's a room at GW filled with hardcopy versions of the lore of the Emperor, the Primarchs, etc, and that like an old monk checking on the original writing of the apostles, stored on scrolls inside a vault, one of the heads of GW goes into that room and emerges 30 minutes later and says, "No, Russ is allergic to strawberries, change it to bananas" or whatever. So I think that while whatever appears in a sanctioned book about WH is canon, it doesn't mean that's the whole story. I'm just enjoying the ride. It's like an Agatha Christie mystery. I don't try to solve it, I just let Miss Marple do all the work and then name the killer.

I think Maggie is salty. He speaks truth that there is darkness in the form of the Wulfen within Russ and his sons, but I have a feeling that the mention of "runes" is merely Magnus viewing the conquering of the Wulfen, the reining in of the inner-wolf, with his own understanding of how things could be done: via magical means. He projects and views the world in his own lens (like almost every does), and he uses the runes as an explanation for the wolves' control of their inner-wolf.

  • @FoxHound-ut1hu
    @FoxHound-ut1hu Před 7 měsíci +7

I don't believe Magnus is referencing the Wulfen, the description used just doesn't really reference any aspect of the Wlufen but what I do find interesting is when we look at Bjorn in the 42nd millennium where when he is put into cold sleep he doesn't go unconscious but his spirit is so powerful that he spends his time battling daemons in the warp and guarding Fenris. It should also be noted that Bjorn is not a psyker either.

The people of Fenris are mutants, and Russ evolved the same way due to the chaos taint on the planet, they keep there human looking bodies via runes and rituals, the 'wolves' of Fenris are actually the final form of the mutant population, the real reason Russ hated the Thousand Sons is because he was afriad the Flesh Change would somehow effect his own legion (like a virus or leprosy)

Now I'm not up to date on lore, but as far as i was aware there is no chaos taint on Fenris, the closest you could get is the Gate Morkai where aspirants are tested against temptation. I wouldn't call that a taint that spreads to the populace. The people of Fenris are not mutants, they are descendents of DAoT settlers who altered their genes to better adapt to the climate on the planet, some took it to far and became wolves entirely but the general populace that the Vlka Fenryka recruit from are only slightly deviated from baseline humanity, becoming a Space Marine takes more gene editing.

as a symbol runes represent order imposed on chaos (magick) so perhaps Magnus means that they are harnessing chaos just as much as himself or the Thousand Sons while believing the runes make them different. This is somewhat mistaken since runes are really about accepting fate, however they land when they are cast is final and must be accepted or else risk worse consequences. Obviously the shard of Magnus has his own agenda and his own limited understanding, but I don't think he's saying that Russ discovered all the primarchs are all of the warp, he could have been saying "we" but he doesn't it's all "Russ". If any of the primarchs were equipped to figure out their own nature on their own I would have thought it was Magnus.
It seems more likely to me that Russ is mirroring Magnus and Mortarion, Russ treats with daemons he does the whole descent into the underworld quest, the wolves have a much deeper cultural awareness of daemons than any other legion, it's all malificarum this and that. No... I think there's more to it than just a broken bit of Magnus misunderstanding Russ?
Also important to see the parallel between Russ and Magnus in their mythological influences. They're both very Odin inspired and Odin is the great magician.

The emperor and malcador made them using the golden throne tech during unification. And russ was one of the ancient terran warlords, manufactured, after being conquered. The wulven isn't a creation of the emepror or the sigilites, but the leftover gene splicing done by their ancient terran ancestors. Then, once conquered and brainwashed and infused, were shot out into space, strategically. Everything else is propaganda.

Grimdark is what they're hiding. The entire psychology of Fenris isn't just survival, it's survival through constant enduring inter-tribal warfare with the ability to excel at murdering others being the primary characteristic. They're hiding a literal swirling cesspool of PTSD and complex trauma almost from birth, where sanity isn't sane, and even the elevation to the Space Wolves (I love the old omnibus') is entirely about survival enduring emotional, intellectual and physical trauma to the point they think they're only partially sapient animals. Grimdark is what they're hiding.

The idea that the runes keeps something within under control is BS. Either Magnus is an idiot (as we well know he is), either a lier (we also know that).
In the Chris Wright SW trilogy we saw how a trinket first and a master crafter collar later contained the growing psy powers of a SW (in some pre psychic awakaning narrative arch), and with that, also the taint of Nurgle. The wulfen in clearly not anything of that nature

Okay so, how do you know the "us" isn't just the space wolves?
All signs point to Magnus actually knowing something about Russ - they worked together - and Russ and his wolves straight up betrayed their brothers so freaking quickly and at the whim of chaos.
Why does no one talk about how eager Russ was to get rid of Magnus? There have been zero consequences for that.
If Magnus knows of a dark secret, that would explain why Russ so quickly turned on him.
You're just dismissing that out of hand due to bias imo.

What does Magnus know? Magnus taught Russ how to delete his internet search history BEFORE Daddy could find out what Russ had been browsing.

Also the Halloween video of Magnus and Russ playing Shaggy and Scooby. Neither of them had the courage to tell Ferrus exactly what the "fur armour" was actually for, and to this day (in the 41st millennium) both of them are terrified that Ferrus finding out will be what resurrects him, so they both have a massive interest in keeping this bit of lore out of the sphere of knowledge in the universe.
(and what? No, not pr0n, get your mind out of the gutter. How intimidating is a vegetarian wolf? Not very intimidating when that wolf isn't from Catachan, that's how intimidating a vegetarian Fenrisian wolf isn't!)

I am reading the Ahriman series now, and there are Space Wolves in there, those really made me loose my interest in them.
They are hunting Ahriman because he and the Thousand Sons killed the Space Wolves company, they are after Ahriman for revenge. I am fine thus far.
But the Space Wolves were sent to Prospero to kill the Thousand Sons, so they basicly defended themselfs and killed the Space Wolves sent to assassinate, and now the Space Wolves are mad? What a bunch of childish idiots. "You killed my borthers when we tried to kill yours, you have to die now". That group got what they deserved in the end.
Btw this group probably gives an answer to what Magnus meant, when exposed to the Eye for a while, they basicly became uncontrollable wild beasts, werwolf like. soudns like this
