- We haul out in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where we get hit with blow after blow of shocking discoveries, including a possible crack in the hull, and a cracked saildrive flange which stops us from going back in the water as planned. The last thing we needed when preparing to sail across the Pacific Ocean...
SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. They found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are almost ready to cross the Pacific Ocean!!

Hi Colin, i've in the past had to weld a saildrive flange like this one, the tricky part is to try to create a crease in the metal (with a grinder) all along the crack to fill it afterwards with the aluminium rods during the welding process but also think about clotting the hole for the bolt which is right by the crack, otherwise, it can get welded too and you'll have to re-drill afterwards, aluminium during welding process can't be welded all at once during one pass, its heat resistance is not too good so do it layer by layer and allow some cooloing time in between...if you go for welding..but having to cross an ocean is a different thing, if you have a good aluminium welder that has done such a job before then go for it, because once on the water the seals will do their job and there will be no traction nor friction on it, up to you mate. i've been watching you for quite some time now and i know that you are very resourceful and fully qualfied to assume which ever decison you'll make; god bless and hope you guys don't miss your weather window.
Presumably sorted by now as they are well under way. I'm interested but. Thanks 👍
cold weld
I agree
I was thinking welding too. V cut and fill. Good luck mate and godspeed on the repairs. Either way live the video and prep for the crossing.
Love the video
OMG LOOOOVE these repair videos. The videos of all the beautiful places y’all go and the fun things you are doing are amazing but watching the actual work that goes into caring for Parlay is my favorite. Colin, the way you narrate and the genuineness you possess are truly a gift, you are made for this stuff! Standing by for next episode🤗
agree, repair videos great. tig it up colin
Crazy mad respect for you Colin. No matter what you and your crew get the job done. If you have not made this official yet, Jaime deserves 1st, officer status. Best dang mate in the world. Awesome crew.
With out a doubt
Jamie is one of the best mates anyone could ever have. Love his low key nature and humour.
Suggestion for the future, paint vertical lines on the side of the hull where the bulkheads are. Then there is no guessing for you or the guys lifting the boat as to where the bulkheads are. Love these technical videos. Sorry to hear of the crack in the main housing. Obviously you resolved it since you already made the crossing.
Just some little self-adhesive triangles placed just above the waterline where the straps must go.
And use another colour triangles placed were the supports can be placed will do the trick, and are quite common.😉
Yes I see all the laker boats have lines painted on the hulls for tug pushing. Will speed up the take outs and should prevent FU !
CRYSTAL CLEAR !
How about the words “ lift here “written on the hull
Mate, your mental strength amazes me, you've dealt with so much shit, persevered and succeeded and moved on. No doubt with all the issues you'll encounter you'll deal with and come out better off. Looking forward to the updates.
These repair videos lets your subs sleep easy... I can't imagine you Colin, doing anything half-assed. YOUR EXPERTISE COUPLED WITH THAT "PARLAY REVIVAL" NAME IS MAGIC! So, get to work brother and good luck. Catching waves can wait. Catching breaks are way more important for your stress levels right now. We'll be watching 😊
Tip: When hauling out an engine, even if you're just taking the weight off it, always use steel to steel. While a halyard might be rated for the weight, it's not rated for tension on a 45 deg edge of steel lug, which imparts a point sheer exceeding the line and can cut through through the halyard, even at weights way lower than it's static breaking limit.
You got lucky.
Nothing wrong with using the halyard, provided it's realistic breaking strength is > 3x the weight of the engine, but please use a steel link also rated > 3x the engine's weight.
Install a fine dome filter at the sea inlet! One that can be cleared with a brush. Other sailing channels have experienced similar issues, both with engine cooling as well as desalination, toilet flushing and even salt water sink feeds.
Hang in their, Colin! All of the above is said to help keep fingers, toes, engines and boat intact! I WANT you to succeed and do it in style! Looking forward to next week's video! Good luck!
You can't filter before the ducts in the sail drive leg, which was where the plastics were.
Mark your toe rail with a s/s plate where your bulkheads are, will save alot of stress when lifting out.
Or little stickers at the water line on the bulkheads, that's how a lot of boats around here do it
Jamie's comic relief, help and friendship seems to be a huge part of Parlay. Great guy!!
Watching all those inside bits being taken apart was fascinating, but how dare you leave it on a cliffhanger!
@3:10 "Only one hull with anit-foul and let's go!" That got me laughing Colin! Good one.
Hi Colin, As far as I know, there is a weld repair possible on this sail drive flange. You'll need a good welder, but there are great craftsmen in those remote areas. Good luck to you and the crew.
We have a Benteau 32 in Summerland BC Canada and when they lifted our boat out for the straps were placed incorrectly and guess what happen! Crushed Haul... Thank God My husband watched Parlay Rival it was because of you he knew how to do the repair. Thanks Colin
why aren't there permanent markers on the hull where the bulkheads are? no tapping needed
Yep....!!
As Colin mentioned, the boatyard never asked him if he was ready. They started lifting without asking.
@@dennispatrick4999 Thanks Karen. You missed the point of the question. When repairing your hull why doesn't anyone put paint markers where the bulkheads are. seems a simple solution to avoid folk tapping your boat with lumps of wood. As you were
@@jimmythesaint5674 No, buttercup, didn't miss anything your feeble mind was whining about. As clearly stated by Colin, the boatyard lifted before he was ready and checked the crane straps. Putting tape down without discussing the lift points to the Spanish Speaking Workers wouldn't matter.
Now, go whine somewhere else.
That last scene points up what they call "The loneliness of command."
"Go big or go home!" whilst hugging a dog! What a babe!
Colin and Jamie your skills are priceless just in repairs ! The money you have saved in labor and repairs !!!! Great work Boys
A smooth sea never made a good sailor.... goddamn Colin is the frickin best out there. I mean if you didn't have bad luck you wouldn't have any luck, but it never seems to be too much for you, you simply face everything and overcome it. I've never met such an inspirational person in all my life. All our lives are challenging and the way you deal with challenges is a lesson to all of us. What a dude 👏 👌
Ya, stressing. Take care of yourself Colin.
If you can't get a new flange quick enough, maybe can search for a new to you flange from a marine junk yard. I don't know if there is such a thing. Maybe someone out in internet land has a used flange they could send to you, QUICKLY. Super happy to hear there isn't a crack in the hull. I'm glad to see you are cleaning all of the sail drive parts thoroughly. A must for a rebuild project. Good luck locating a new, or used, flange. Sending positive vibes your way!! Best to all involved in this Heracleion task!!
a competent welder could grind that out and repair in under 2 hours.
Every time you do any work on Parlay, i'm anxious! I cant imagine your stress levels!!! 😮
What I love the most about the re&re videos is first the challenges with disassembly (which can be often the most challenging part of the process - once things have been installed for a while, they often don’t want to come back apart), and then that feeling you get when you’ve “won” the battle, through persistence and ingenuity. Then the fun part of cleaning everything up and putting it back together again, making everything fresh and clean and functionally good to go for a while (hopefully). When you know it’s all been refreshed and sealed up, that sense of accomplishment is amazing.
Another awesome video from the Parlay Crew! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Love Jamie saying he doesn't "know why he's so nervous to haul out?"
It's because your name's on the boat! 😂❤
Another amazing tutorial for any number of folks out here!! Things that most sailors don't even know about let alone check before long sails..you folks find it and do it! Hence the reason you people are different than most vlogs. How many folks just let the yard do the work you people do? Would a yard even go to the lengths that you do just to make certain everything is free and clear of damages, cleaned, and knowing a problem by looking at it...or just slapping everything back in WITHOUT saying a word? I'd be willing to say next to NONE!! That's why your videos are amazing to watch, live through with you all (highs and lows) and I believe you educate folks to stop and think about...'Hmmmm, wonder if we should do the same as these guys?' GREAT JOB FOLKS, GREAT JOB!!
We met way back in 2017 at Nanny cay you just got that boat I was getting some new running rigging done (pushed a little hard on the way down). Honestly I'm a bit jealous all the help you always have me being a single hander (which includes refits) Now just yesterday I turned that corner of all the repairs done now started putting things back on, went to wire the windlass added a switch at the helm. I discovered the connections were just too rusted and after screwing with it just ordered a new one, to say the lest was a bit bummed. After watching this not so much... I feel your pain my brother.
Colin buy the smallest ac/dc tig welder and learn to weld mate you can buy Disposable gas bottles. I love it when your fixing stuff lol i bet theres guys on here likes it too lol all the best from Northern Ireland
I have been binge watching from the beginning of your Channel. started about 3 weeks ago. on Episode 211. My only regret is when i get caught up i am going to have to wait a week for new content. I know you hear it all the time, but what a Crew you manage, even though they change so often. Cheers! to your success!
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space :)
Hi Colin when you are in nz next time ,bring the sail flange to my shop in whangarei . I will weld it up for you ...
Maybe there's a god tig welder and machine shop around? Looks like a pretty big marina.
Way to go guys ❤thanks for the love id do anything for you - like I’ll be right down to Fp to scrub those hulls a bit and keep your bottoms smooooooth
Wow! The end of below deck this week…steamy! BTW Parley Revival first 😊 hope your having a great time in French Polynesia!
Sometimes I think you have the worst luck of any sailing channel! But you always stay positive and come out of it with a smile on your face? Cheers and Good Luck to Team Parlay .....❤
It's amazing he hasn't given up for all the challenges, PLUS being struck by lightning TWICE. I'd have said F. This, I'm out of here!.
I'm looking forward to your crossing and the epic parties and adventures with the folks from Delos, One Life and a lot of other people!
Chin up bro, push on! What’s life without a few setbacks to make the destination more sweet
Stay focused and just keep moving ahead. You will be ok.
bloody crazy, the despair on your face said it all, I actually felt the pressure you are under. Thank goodness you have a great crew that support you. looking forward to the next video.
That crack in the sail drive plate looks like it can be welded . I suggest taking it too a local welding shop , if the marina does not have one. Trying to stay ahead of a deadline like you are facing causes so much unneeded stress. Good luck and thanks for keeping us posted.
Good to know youre so festidious about inspecting your boat for cracks..
My late husband used to look over our boats with a fine tooth comb, always looking for inperfections..he was a pro angler so his fishing boats were always in perfect condition..same for our pontoon boat which was our family boat used for camping out and fishing of course..i sure miss boating since he passed away in 09..❤
Months later you are destressed and reaping the rewards of your labor in the Marquesas's. 🏝 Congratulations on your Pacific crossing. And, beating Delos's time. Cheers mates. Thanks for sharing. 🍻
There is always one …
Not hard to beat Delos time. Parley is, after all, a cat!
Chin up Col, if anyone can get it done... you can mate.
Keep up the hard work.
I am sure there are many top notch welders in and around the yard, but,,, the BEST welders you'll ever find work in and for power plants.. If you ever really get into a bind, find the closest power plant and either go there or call the plant's maintenance crew. These are some of the best guys in the World and we love to help out others.... Best of luck guys... Did I mention how much I love your channel?? Well, it's true.. I am handicapped and pretty much strapped to land these days, but I get my sailing in through you and Delos and of course, that GUY who steels the show all the time on that OTHER 450!!! Hahahahahaha....... You guys are the best!!!
Great stuff, Colin!
Ooof! What a gut punch at the end.
Why don’t you put markings on the side of the boat where the straps are going with a little label saying straps here?
Oh, one more thing. Thanks for telling us about the Ultra Anchor performance on your boat.
JB Weld, MAP Gas with aluminum/Flux core rod, or spit some bubble gum on that sail drive seal plate. Truly I don't know but believe you all got this!
Have fun. Good luck on your crossing ❤❤🎉🎉😊😊
I'm so sorry that you guys have been through so much in the last few years! You have such determination Colin!! I'm glad to know that you've made it through the hard parts now and are finally in French Polynesia. Looking forward to next week's episode! Fair Winds!⛵️
I would have to bet that there is someone around that can TIG weld that crack in the sail drive. I have faith in you guys, you'll get it done and be one your way in no time. :)
Dude Colin you left us on a cliff hanger what happens next???? Love the channel happy sails
Colin, you and your homies are absolute savages. Damn bro.
Groovy video. You're almost rebuilding your boat again.
Tough Break hopefully it can be welded. I wonder if the damage was cause by something striking that sail drive and exerting pressure on it or if the crack was caused by the weight of the engine on the rear motor mount or a combination of the 2. You might consider welding both of them up to make them stronger in that area if it happened once it might happen again. Take Care love the videos!!!!
A few episodes back I seem to recall them touching bottom. Could have been that?
order replacement and ship to tahiti, grind out this crack with a dremel carbide and re-weld. super easy if steel. harder if cast aluminum.
Excellent video this week and all whilst you’re in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. 👍
I would make some permanent markings on the outside(paint or sticker) where the bulkheads are so there is no guessing.
Thought exactly the same “Lift Here” Stickers 👍
*Ohhhh NOOOOOOO I hope the part can be got sooner than later.... as we in Aotearoa New Zealand is awaiting your return.*
Hell it'll be a almost new boat
Good thing you found out this crap while close to land. Good luck 👍
Weld the crack..here's hoping y'all a safe and pleasant passage!!..👍👍👍🗽🇺🇸
Hi Colin I have never seen you give up on anything I see this as a challenge for you and I know that you like a good challenge. Cheers from Craig
Stickers on the hull sides near the deck for lifting points, bulkheads and must miss areas. Keeps me happy and takes out all the guesswork with people smacking the hull with bits of wood!.
I feel for you for sure. In December I took out both my Yanmar 4Jh4AE engine and sd50s on my cat using a backacter and a strop. Did the same work you did on your saildrives. I found a plastic bag sucked up in my drive. Could not believe it was not overheating. I needed to change both my heat exchangers on my engines as well as they were dripping coolant. We used a drill and brush to get the rust off the blocks and repainted both engines and saildrives. All my engine mounts and sail drive mounts were loose. My one engine bed was loose on the hull so I needed to rebuild both my engine bays so lots of grinding in a white suit and epoxy and glass to finish them before putting the engines back again.
Hi Colin, not many things on this earth I hate but one Is The Sail drives, I have a propulsion system that I have been working on and would make cats unsinkable as far as through hulls. Sure enjoy your videos Brother, Best Regards.
I'm sure you'll find a good welder close to that yard who can fix the housing for you. You've got this as you've had everything that came before this one hiccup is not going to stop you I'm sure of that. Don't worry about it being repaired via welding as in most cases a weld is stronger than the original metal of the part being welded. I have no doubt you've got this just keep being your positive self no matter what life or your beautiful boat throws at you.
Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...
Mr Burn - good welders are tough to come across. Good aluminum welders even tougher. Considering their location.... That's a tall order! I hope they find one as well.
Wow. Huge crack. I've seen some things repaired by very good welders but that would be a very risky spot for repairs.
Love seeing all the work you did on the boat before the Patreon meeting up and the pacific crossing! Hard date deadlines makes everything more stressful especially when unknown issues cause delays.
Cliff hanger deluxe. Out of sequence as well. Looking forward to getting up to date mate ? Anyhow, have a good one. ☝️❤️✌️🌍🙏
Might be a good idea to put a couple paint marks on the outside of the hull where the bulkheads are... Kind of like a "lift here" sign on containers.
Great video as always, Colin. Love the crew and love watching you do your thing in solving the problems, meeting the challenges. You're an inspiration, sir. There may be others on the water who are really good, but there's nobody better. You're amazing.
Nothing like a good boat repair, just tig weld up the crack if it is at all possible. You guys rock when it comes to solving these problems. Love your videos Colin
Too bad you didn't do this before the boat show. Refits never go as planned .
Cilin, you are anything and everything other than a typical DIYer. At 18:00 did you just call yourself a Tool? 🤣😂
Colin, you're the only one I would trust working on a boat that I was going to make a passage in. Total trust in your decision-making when it comes to getting the work done.
0:00. Yes. My favorite episodes begin.!!! So excited..!
0:22. Shit.!
3:48. YES. FINALLY. Those will make you so much more efficient.!! I feel super happy for you.! 😃
I remember recommending those a while back. But they're pretty penny.!
9:18. Heck yeah.!!!! That would have been a pain. For sure.
22:20. Uh-oh. Well you could well that up a bit and it should be okay. Rather than ordering a new one. I mean welding material is on average stronger than the material surface it's being welded to. But then you have different structural rigidity in different spots. Which can cause weaker spots to form cracks more quickly. After being repaired.
But sticking some goodwills on there. Unless there is other non-visible internal cracking going on. Which this external cracking may very well be indicative of. Outside of that. You should be good. Unless you want to order a new one.
Awesome episode. Great editing. I appreciate all your hard work. 👍👍
Collin, clean that housing up and have the crack tig welded up. Get a new one on order and do the replacement during the next haul out. It survived all these years cracked and didn't fail. You should be fine who knows when or what caused the crack, could have happened during the hurricane damage. I would weld it for you if I could but on the other side of the world.
You should have your own show..." This old boat"
Find the best (aluminum? ) welder available. An excellent one should be able to fix that crack without heat distortion or fatigue (even reinforce it)....and finish the sealing surfaces to spec.
The KEY word above is...EXCELLENT. 😉
You're probably in the water already. 🤞🙏
❤ the tech and engineering stuff, Colin. 🍻
Might knock some sense into him, classic Jamie ! spat my beer over the screen, to late for that mate lol. I know you've got this
Great episode. I appreciate the extra effort to film and explain all the reality of not only the shipyard but the innards of the boat itself. Can’t wait to see how this was solved.
Don't sleep on Colin..The dude is a Super yacht Chief engineer!! I've had similar cracks show up on transferase housings after cleaning with harsh chemicals. I'll no longer use brake clean on cast alum. Find a local welder but make sure they drill both ends of the crack so it doesn't continue to grow. Then groove it out and fill that sucker in.
Your awesome Colin
Legend, seems sooo easy to dismantle an engine
fingers crossed for you Colin
There’s only one word to describe the feeling of discovering this show stopping crack… “BUGGER!”
Keep the faith crew if it was easy everyone would be out there love these videos !! :))
Great episode as always. Learn so much! Thanks for putting up such awesome videos.
Partying until you crack the hull! The way to go, absolutely the best stress test, from an engineer! On a serious note, I personally do not like those sail drives on smaller boats, a right angle to any cabling in the ocean could result in huge stresses and potential dislocation of the drive. I rather have my prop messed up and a small leak to contend with maybe.
Video good thank very much make so many happy. I watch very much best CZcams thanking you!
I hear ya dude, it's all about being prepared. That's why you're up at 4:30am...but also why you'll have a successful crossing...
Damn that was a quick 22 minutes!
There’s a reason why you’re definitely one of the raddest dudes on YT. Does a 9/10 complicated job: makes it look easy and still manages to film it and entertain the internet.
Bros out here changing input shaft seals like it’s NBD lol. To the crew of Parlay: y’all got a seriously legit captain haha.
Just got done a 2 week surf trip. About to glass the board soon and it’s coming your way!
There's no real problem shipping in NZ, anymore. It sucked during the Covid lock downs, but it's good, now.
.... Colin! .. love how you explain stuff, not expecting your viewers to know already the intricoes that go on and what it means .. like how all four of you are right in the git'n-er-done .... thx for the share .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....
Nice cliff-hanger end there !
Man crazy episode. Looking forward to seeing how that played out.
When colin found the crack in the main housing i thought shit there not going to be splashing on friday then i remembered i watched the live they did last week crossing the pasific🤣i gotta layoffa them stiizy pre-rolls
Frenz don't let frenz puff pre-rolls
Oh !!!! The DRAMA. !!!! Weeks and Months of preparing our LIVERS for the bar rooms of the South Pacific. Hey Bobs your Uncle
Hell of a pro active thinker Mr Collin
Man Alive! You cannot catch a break! You guys are amazing! You can do it
That was a cool video, nice change of pace with the content. Love seeing your knowledge
