Would You Buy a Sunken Boat For $150k? Because I Did!! - (Episode 214)

- Hurricane Irma destroyed hundreds of boats, SV parlay being one of them, which sank on her port side and was deemed a constructive total loss. That's when I bought her for $150k at the start of 2018 and proceeded to spend the next couple of years rebuilding her. Now, we had an incredibly special moment when we showed the previous owner, Bob, how we had revived Parlay back to her former glory!
SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. They found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are almost ready to cross the Pacific Ocean!!

Colin's ability to fix or repair almost anything is very impressive
He’s a former engineer.
His talent shows no bounds.
It's not an uncommon thread among liveaboards.
YA kinda better know how to fix it.
Such a clever dude❤
@@Sommers234😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
thats properly special getting Bob back on board after all that has happened to Parlay. Colin, you’re a hell of a guy with a good team around you. Good on you for getting Bob back at the helm.
This episode has all the feels. Love that Bob was back on the boat.
I can't believe how much work you had to do before you set off to French Polynesia. Awesome episode made even more special with Bob on board.
Jamie and Colin are brothers from another mother!
This is a really special episode, not that the others aren't. You're a great guy Colin, good on you for bringing Bob on board...really cool.
That was great.
Thanks for summing up my thoughts way more succinctly than I ever could.
That was as a great video. I remember when Bob told us they had lost Parley to the storm. He was devistated. But I really looks great now.
Must have been awesome for Bob Estes to been back on Parley. Trust me the feeling for him is more than you can imagine, to be back on his pride and joy , just like yours
Colin, It was so awesome that you had Bob Estes back on the boat for a visit. I had to watch this episode 3 times because it was that good. I'm sorry I missed the meetup in Mexico. Cheers mate!
@@buckwheat3869otay buckwheat. Were you invited? I didn't think so.
I think if Parlay had been my boat, to come on board and not only see her sailing again, but with all the upgrades she was better than ever, I'd get teary-eyed. (If not break down into tears)
I think i had a smile on my face the whole 20 minutes. Colin and Jamie , You guys are 100% class acts. Ive watched all the episodes twice and i believe this was my favorite. You both have worked so hard and deserve this happiness more than anyone i know. A big congratulations ❤❤😊
What an amazing episode. Thanks for bringing Bob on board. That had to be so special to him.
😭The moment that Bob stepped on Parlay. I lost it!
Loved this episode!! Really touching and endearing. He has to feel good knowing that she is loved and went to an exceptionally good home/owner.
Colin, this was such a classy gesture.
Fair winds and calms seas, ya’ll ⛵️🤍
Fellow kiwi here. When I first watched your channel I had a jetski. Bought it for 450 bucks. Traded UpTo small 14 foot. Traded up to 18 foot barracouda. Traded up to 20 foot figlass viscount. Traded up to current boat Bayliner 2958 command bridge. Working on that from ground up. After that I'll trade up agian to hopefully a hurricane cat. Answer to your title. Yes. Yes I will. Not too sure about a lagoon but something. Hope to see you at some stage while your passing by NZ maybe possibly show you the progress with the Bayliner.
Good journey bro.
Colin , I feel like Proud mama😂. I’m so proud of what you have done with your life. I’m very excited to be able to sail the world with you all. Such fun, educational videos
Colin, your uniqueness shows through in ways I could have never imagined. Giving Bob the special opportunity to sail Parlay once again is a life memory he will always be thankful for. Of course, for us, the "observers" getting to see that happen is a humbling experience. Thank you for bringing your humanity and sense of being a true SAILOR to the table. I believe this episode is by far the most endearing I have witnessed thus far.
Agreed,
I couldn't have said it better myself.
Cheers. 🇳🇿 😎
Such a beautiful story! What an immense satisfaction and feeling of pride you and your mates must have, Colin for bringing Parlay back to life, and to see the smile on Bob's face to be on board sailing again! So great that he tracked you down. You've sparked my curiosity about a Lord Nelson 41, Kairos, that I bought in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina, hoping to do the same. Plans changed, and I had to re-sell her after doing some initial work to clean her up. If her new owner is reading this, please comment!
OMG this video is giving me all the feels - what a touching amazing gift to the previous owner!
The second life for the boat with the great blessings of the previous owner wonderful
Beautiful just beautiful. Thanks for inviting Bob along.
Even with all the magnificent upgrades, you can tell there are women aboard. Nothing says home like a womans touch. 😘 Colin and crew, your hard work put an ear to ear grin on Bob's face. Reach over your shoulders and give yourselves a pat. Good job! 🤟
So nice to get Bob out on Parley Colin. That’s really special. Only Core sailors understand that 😊
You are a very special person to make sure you have a great boat and invite the previous owner to come back to see her in all her glory. Thank you for sharing this with us.
How special was that for Bob, what a treat for you all.
that's pretty cool that the original owner is a fan/patreon.
Parlay continues to be the hub of friendships and special memories for so many. Jamie, your date is beautiful.
Great job showing and telling, keep up the good work. And great guy Colin well see ya next time see ya bye y’all.
He must have been impressed by how solid and quiet she was. I know that he never boarded from the stern that easily before. Thanks for sharing the moment with everyone.
I was recently in French Polynesia, take your time and enjoy, the people are fantastic and Bloody Mary,s in Bora Bora was a great stop.
I love living vicariously through your CZcams channel. I know nothing of sailing or boats but always wanted to, love this show!
Collin I have watched your videos for a while . I grew up on the pacific coast SoCal . I grew up on boats , been out there on the ocean in a 10 ft flat bottom to a 100 ft + vessel completely disappearing in the swells , I envy you and the crew on the Jamie 460 ?? . Oh and why you gotta pick on your brother Jamie like that about his date . It was funny , he reminds me of my brother when we were kids on the pacific . Love the channel . 🤙
My favorite upgrade to the foam mattress is the Froli sleep system. Air plus adjustable support underneath the mattress.
The huge smiles on your faces when you are sailing says it all! I can only imagine how he and YOU felt! Good stuff...
Colin you have an amazing never give up attitude
Colin, I am just another one of your many fans. I don’t know if you read your comments, but I want you to know this video touched my heart so much!! Thank you, from the bottom of my heart! I needed this today, more than I even realized! Thanks for making a difference!!!
Of all your videos this is absolutely one of my top 5 favorites.
Colin! I cried. This was so special to watch! Thank you!
Surprised you couldn't hear that water sloshing around under that fridge area ! We've been told at least 100 boats all arrived in the Marquesas at once ! Can't help but feel sentimental . I went through the hurricane on CZcams and ham radio .
That water collecting near the fridge would've been a good opportunity to make a lift up floor board to get yourselves some more storage. Plus you could also watch for more water gathering there
Wow, what a great story! It's always great to be able to have the history of the vessel. We have a 47 foot yacht and it was great to listen to the family tell us their stories/memories. It gives you a special pride to have the vessel. You should be very PROUD!
This was a real sentimental episode. I love seeing the technical workings as well. Thanks Colin, you inspired me to take my family to celebrate my 50th by sailing on the Entice catamaran around the Whitsundays. Not going to regret that in 20yrs at all. I'll be at a geospatial conference in Auckland in Oct so I will keep an eye out for you.
With boat lighting like that all you need is a set of strobe lights, a disco ball and a DJ mixing desk then you can do Ibiza inspired raves in a pair of budgie smugglers.
Watching this episode made it feel it was or use to be my boat. I got a little tearing eyed. Parlays looking Sharpe as can be those under water lights will be fantastic. Definitely going to be 1000% better in clear water. It was great you connected with previous owner Bob and had him come aboard 4 days to reminisce the good ole days.
Safe sailing
Jamie's got a girlfriend Jamie's got a girl friend . Behave and have fun Jamie
That was a special episode. For gel coat color tinting I was taught to do a small batch to get the feel of colors and ratio needed so that you don't screw up the complete batch which is easy to do. I have to say it works since I never screwed up the complete batch, making it perfect that is a ART which I haven't mastered yet but I get it good enough.
One of your best videos.. Well done.
Colin, You are an awesome guy! What a special episode. Love watching your channel.
How could Bob NOT be proud. You guys did an awesome job. I sold a ten year old motorcycle to a friend 30 years ago. His son is still riding the bike.
There's a connection there.
Great episode. I bought a boat and had its only previous owner come over to me in the marina on a night stay and he said oh wow my boat. It was quite a special moment to meet him and him to see his boat.
This parlay version is even more special because Colin / Jamie and the gang have made this Boat amazing. Bob could not have been anything but blown away.
Collin, another heart warming story that you and your crew tell so well! Thank You for sharing and caring!
Sailing Stardust!
Has a great episode I really enjoyed that Colin thanks for making our lives better John Sailing instructor the video editor and the school bus trainer in Kansas City
Bob is such a genuine person! I think u having him on the boat was a great idea!!
What a lovely special episode, that put a lovely smile on my face to see what a welcoming you gave the original owner Bob the chance to sail his boat again ,good on you Colin and crew i take my hat off to you all.
Since the beginning of this boat "revival" journey I've seen so many things repaired, redone, rebuilt, replaced, retouched, resurfaced, that it almost seems that by the time Colin is done fixing everything , he will have practically created a whole new vessel!!!!
🤣😂🤣🤣😂... but at least it will all be up to seaworthiiness standards... Go Colin!
Colin that was a lovely thing too do to bring Bob back. It brought a tear to my Eyes. Your such a great guy. It's on my bucket list that I meet you sometime. Mabey next year lol. Nice match with the Gelcoat. You can't see anything. Not that I would anyway lol. Chat soon 😅😅
Such a nice thing too do by inviting bob on board an taking him for a sale but a true legend for letting him take control of he’s old boat like you said money can’t pay for the memories he’s had on that boat just like use have oready
Great stuff as always Colin. David Shih is an absolutel LEGEND. You can tell him I said that. And if you see this David: LEGEND. LEGEND.
Great editing on this one. That's very cool to see the previous owner, Cheers to "OG Bob" and to Colin & the crew!
Had to binge watch below deck season 4 before coming back to see you cross the Pacific.
Omg Colin it's so great to stumble apon your page! I am excited to watch this!
Absolutely special episode Colin. This is so special to see how you reunited the boat with the former owner
Thank you for sharing the story with all of us.
Sailors are a superior breed of people.
Colin's a very special person, wise beyond his years. Keep Rocking Brother!
100% amazing episode.
Bob, you're a legend. So cool to see you back on Parlay.
Colin has done thé BEST revival ever.
It's just amazing.....your excitement and nervs regarding previous owner shows your awesome character .....you guys are awsome.....
Your outdoor countertop sink area is perfect! Will make things so much easier to clean and filleting your fish as well!
Special Colin, inviting Bob for a sail prior to your Pacific crossing.
The "Pimp my Ride" episode..finally new curtains...Bob looked stoked..new table top on the transom look very practical ..
Fantastic episode! You are such a good man and it was wonderful of you to have Bob back on Parlay, his smile was awesome.
Really cool brother. We are really impressed with what you give to others. Happy sailing
*Kia ora (hello) Bob, I am so pleased that you got to see and also sail on Parlay again.... I bet all the memories came flooding back too. But Colin & all the different crews have done an amazing job to bring Parlay back to where she is now.... and she will continue sailing around the earth's oceans.... but soon she heads back to Colin's homeland of Aotearoa New Zealand... and I sure hope to get to see this mighty boat in person, in Auckland, that survived a mighty storm so long ago.*
Thats so great Mr. Bob came an went out with you guys on his former love!! He looked so happy at her helm and you could see in his face the emotions he has for her!! Thats a really great thing yall did for him Colin, Great video brother, Until next Sunday, Stay safe guys!!!
Your boat is better than new it has your touch and knowledge making it a rock that floats and a crew to boot.rhankyou dor making parlay a family show
Very cool giving Bob the VIP treatment. 🤟. Colin and Bob, Win Win situation after Momma nature put her foot down in the BVI. 👍 Table tops great idea! Better than getting knee knots filleting a fish on the transom 🥴.
David’s hair has grown back nicely
I just can't stop watching without a big smile, you all are great people full of love
yeah baby
Would have been nice to get some back history from Bob such as when he bought the boat, where he sailed it, etc
what a cool and heart warming video , thanks for sharing Colin , love from Scotland
Amazing episode!! Many underestimate the sentimental value of something such as a boat/home. I can tell you were genuine about impressing Bob. You're a guy with integrity and overall just a "good nice guy".
One of the best episodes ever. :)
Brave decision, but everything seems to be working out - life is so short, much love from Brits in Fiji 🇫🇯
That chain counter is literally the most simple piece of kit that is used in cycling for ages and the value is few bucks...make it marine and they make it thousand(s). Just your revolution is the lenght of chain per revolution not the diameter of a tire. Plus the simple cycle computers count not only the speed but also crank revolutions/speed and power on pedals with three sensors;) Ohhhh the marine industry milkings
One of the if not the sweetest video I have ever seen on CZcams. God bless you guys!
Colin what an episode, you and the crew have truly hit your stride. Bob’s vision carried on, well done everyone.
Very cool... for Mr. ESTES... and us. 😎⚓️
You're a good man, Colin! 👍🛟
One of the best parts of my Sunday! Thanks guys!
I absolutely love watching the Parlay Revival journey. So inspirational - amazing the work Colin and the crew have done since the hurricane damage.
So cool. What a great reunion.
So very cool. Each new episode shows us what an amazing job you guys are doing out there. You’re clearly living the dream.
Just came across your channel and will be my fav for sure as I am also Chief Engineer on Yachts since 2005 and have been pondering the buying a boat for ages, definitely want a Catamaran, pretty impressed with you story and channel, will be watching some your content especially the technical, maintenance and repair.
That’s really cool man..good on u for getting him out there…I’m ready to see this big trip..I’m nervous for yall
There really nothing I can say that hasn’t been said already. Thank you for all the improvements and repairs, you and Jamie have made to Parlay. I remember watching from the beginning and wondering how it would turn out. She is beautiful and in your usual kind and generous manner sharing Parlay with Bob was the ultimate act of kindness to Bob and the chance for Parlay, to show off her splendour. 🎉🎉🎉
WTG Colin, Jaime and Team PR. What a full circle your house has come, from the storm to now about the cross the Pacific on her maiden voyage. Cheers Mate, May God bless you, your team and PR wherever the wind carries her.
That was awsome to see such a nice gesture to have bob aboard I bet he really appreciated it
What a kind and generous gift, Colin.
Legend.
🎏
I would love to be a beautiful boat like this. So much adventure and so much to learn, especially considering the closest I have ever been to the ocean was the gulf of Mexico coast in Mississippi. I wish I could cross an ocean on a sailboat. Been watching your journey for a few years now, truly inspiring and educational.
Killer job guys you should all be proud of yourselves 👍
This was so cool!! Bob looked like he was enjoying himself for sure!! ❣❤❣
Great episode!
Another awesome episode!!!!
Colin that was epic. Watching back from the beginning to now. You sir are a rock star
Awww, good for you to bring Bob aboard. He looked happy! Safe travels ❤️
