You are wrong about Alchemist Protection - the drone is considered a hostile target (although from a friendly faction), so your bombs will still hurt it even with maxed Alch Protection. In fact, the drone is a good way to get around maxed Alch Protection and hit neutral/friendly targets you want to hit (like the sleeping dragons in a vault).
And yeah, it is good on Alch, especially if you go drem - double bomb from frenzy + AAD leaves most things very dead (though 1 bomb is also often enough). Channel staff and your damage sustains also trigger it, though they aren't that effective. Also, Flash Freeze for instant speed AoE damage.
What needs to be mentioned is its synergy with Garkul's Revenge, which would basically make your damage beyond silly (gotta be lucky to get it without vaulting, though).
That Garkul's revenge + AAD synergy sounds super cool.

Can confirm that AAD is bonkers as the first prodigy on Arcane Blades.
It's a massive power spike - more massive than anything I've tried before.
It allows you to continue with your quasi-Archmage phase for another 5 levels at least, helping to ease the transition into melee combat.
The last time I played Insane, I ended up triggering the Godfeaster event before hitting the Dark Crypt because AAD just cleared all T2s pretty much effortlessly, and then cleared the Lake of Nur and Tempest Peak immediately after so I managed to hit level 30 quickly enough.
Placing it in melee isn't an issue, really. You just place it wherever, Flurry it (or nuke it with a beam), and everything explodes.
It has 0 defense, so you'll always hit it (as opposed to enemies), and you'll get a massive boost from your excessive accuracy as well, which is very relevant for staves.
Arcane Blades already have massive single-target damage. Turning that damage AoE is enough for most cases. For those few where it isn't enough, you usually get enough clear from it to disengage and reset, in case you couldn't get a decent AAD placement - and that's rarely an issue.
Everything you said about it working defensively still applies to AB. They don't need to hit enemies themselves. They are more than content with placing the drone between them and the enemies and just hitting the drone instead.
And in tight corridors, if you got gap-closed and can't maneuver around to place the drone in front of an enemy, casting it on the enemy instead will put AAD right behind them (as it'll be the only open space) still in reach of your beams.

The lack of penetration on drone explosion is the only thing that holds it back. Otherwise amazing prodigy all around, even if you can't do silly things anymore like oneshot Atamathon on insane with Wyrmic's static field + link of pain from the drone to target from old fixedart chest I forgot the name of. But even if LoP no longer works on it, Demonologist with acid wave seed (or whatever it's called) can get a good mileage out of the drone, since it plays almost like arcane blade.

AAD is amazing on arcane blade, it starts being usefull at level 25 while you still cast and you basically one-shot everything in high peak with arcane strike. Here is an example.
