  • In today's video, I talk about my personal experience with the eBay Authenticity Guarantee Program with regard to my latest purchase, the Rolex Explorer 114270.
    The eBay money back guarantee program has been a controversial one. Some question if the so-called "experts" actually authenticate the watch or instead just slap a sticker on it. That is what I talk about and try to debunk in todays video.
    Stay tuned for my full review and explanation of why I bought my new Rolex Explorer 114270 coming soon!
    Also, I just recently transferred to the University of Michigan. If anyone is either a current student or has a connection to the school please let me know! I'd love to chat. Go Blue!

    The person in charge of the eBay authentical program has acknowledged that they can't open up the watch for legal reason. So the program itself is very weak. I think you did the right thing is going with a reputable dealer. I would trust Watchbox.

    The back of the ebay card had an NFC symbol offering further details. I wonder what those details might be. In a follow-up video, I would be curious to know what further information there might be in terms of what specific methods ebay used. Thank you.

    Why put the red seal if they haven't opened the back? The red seal is evidence buyer can't of swapped out movements etc before returning, if no one had laid eyes on the movement after sale, why would they attempt to stop this movement from being swapped? Also money lost on ebay is (at least partially) recoverable from the authentication supplier (often independents) no independent would take in dozens, even hundreds of watches for authentication and expose themselves to huge repayments that could destroy their business, for the few dollars/euros/pounds they are paid per piece. Its no skin off their nose if in doubt to send back to seller(still paid), it is an issue if they put their name to it and send on to seller.

    This was also my experience. The first vintage Rolex felt very gritty when winding, which anyone would have noticed. It went through authenticity checks very quickly. The next was more expensive and took a bit longer. Turns out it had a service dial and hands. Slightly grey area as it is authentic, but this detail still needs to be mentioned by the seller. Then a Breitling: scratches on the crystal which were not mentioned in the description. Still went through. Same with a Panerai: described as mint and then had nicks to the case that had not been visible. EBay do check functionality and if the watch matches the description. But their argument is: if it’s a used watch, scratches are to be expected. Sure, but the description still needs to match.
    Generally it’s probably best to find a reputable dealer and buy from them. Had less trouble that way.

    Thank you for posting this video. I am currently looking for a Date Just and specifically only looking at sellers using the eBay authentication process. I was under the impression that the watch was given a full report inclusive of photographs added showing anything they might have found. Sending you a plastic card with no information in the form of a report could mean they are just sticking card in a shipping box. I also found out that once you go through this process your right to return the watch for a refund if you do find anything and the sticker is removed is revoked.

    • @JackOnWrist
      @JackOnWrist  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Yeah to be honest I think it’s a very flawed system. You don’t get any real evidence of how thoroughly your purchased watch is inspected (if they open the case back, remove bracelet, etc) and who even knows if they really look at it at all. I have seen other videos of people saying they received an authentic watch but with the wrong bracelet and it was not marked on supplied literature. Plus loosing the ability to return it after you cut the tag really hurts my comfortability with the process even more.
      I feel grateful I was able to purchase my particular watch from a dealer I know is authentic, but I know not everyone has that luxury. Best of luck in your search for the Datejust!

      @@JackOnWrist Hi Jack the Authenticity guarantee is promoted as benefiting the Buyer. That may be true if we knew what Stoll & Co they actually do. its all a secret! It seems to me that it benefits the seller as much as every seller states No return on their auction. The biggest winner has to be EBay themselves who i would imagine were inundated with claims of "not as described" "replica product" prior to this authenticity guarantee and then having to return the item and of course not getting their commission on the sale

    Congrats on the Explorer! I bought an MR-G G-Shock a week ago for $1,400 that was listed as new and it never went through eBay verification and it came to me scratched up and with a short bracelet. I wish it would have went through eBay verification because it would have never passed for a new watch. I did however buy a Reverso a few months back that did go through eBay verification and while it did not include the red sticker you received I did get a verification card and a nice eBay box with it as the original box was not included with the purchase.

      @D. Stiefel Wow that’s unbelievable. The things people will do to make a sale and try to stick you with a bad product are crazy. Glad you got your money back. What are your thoughts on the MR-G G-Shock? I have to admit it would be hard for me to spend that kind of money on a G-Shock, but if the quality is high then i’d have to think about it seriously as a real contender in the rugged luxury watch space.

    I think that, the ebay authentication program isn't on every single watch over any dollar amount. when i checked i saw watches over 2000, 3000 dollars etc with no ebay authentication check mark. you have to filter for it. can anyone correct me on that? its not something you can opt into or opt in?

  • @finestliving7580
    @finestliving7580 Před 4 měsíci

    It appears they merely received the watch then repacked it to make it appear it was inspected. I pretty much doubt something other than repackaging is done. Like what you said, if you go through the tracking, it is not possible to inspect anything thoroughly even one item for less than 30 minutes. Perhaps an ocular inspection for a couple of minutes then packing it another few minutes ‘til picked up by the carrier. It is just too fantastic.
