      Thanks for that.
The case sides are rounded and slippery, so it's tricky to hold a calliper steady in position there but best as I can make it out it's about 39.4mm.

  • @philspencelayh5464

Depends on your perspective. I've a 36mm with Acrylic and hollow end links, makes a watch that is 110 grammes, you barely notice it's there. All the subsequent ones look huge and the flat sapphire changes the character entirely, they do nothing for me.

As a 40 wearer I also like the look of the thick acrylic crystals of yesterday. I also like how the nice ones catch a little rim of light where they are raised about the bezel. Sometimes I think it’s be cool if they’d go a little thicker. Having said that, I do find it funny how under every CZcams video of the 40, you’ll find an offended 36 wearer. Whereas I think the 36 and 40 are both super cool watches.

I only wear 34-35mm to 37mm watches. But I have normal size forearms and wrists and yes, my watches look small. I just have a different idea of what a wristwatch should be and look, I don’t like the concept of going out with something noticeable. So I would go with the 36mm on this model.

I tried on this 40mm or technically 39mmm watch and it does seat larger than my 39mm watch (MK2). I have a 6.5 inch wrist I think it fits me perfectly - in that case the 39mm propably measures smaller too! I do prefer my 39mm especially the matt black dial over the gloss dial. Either way all explorers are the best - enjoy yours 😊

Hi Ivan. I absolutely agree with you about having (or giving) a glide-lock and 20mm lug to make the watch near perfect. But at least for me, if they can use the "sword hour hand", THAT would make it really perfect. (never was a big fan of Mercedes Rolex hand, ha ha). Perhaps that was why I was partial to Ginault models..... Ivan reviewing a Rolex????? honestly, very surprised.....Anyway, good day, Ivan!

Nice vid. The bracelet link observation is interesting - I just picked up an Explorer 2 black dial (2 year wait to get), and it fit perfectly with one link removed. I have an 18.5 wrist so I’m thinking some guys bigger than me might struggle. The Explorer 2 is also a bit smaller than advertised (42) at 41.5, it wears like a 41 many brands. Very thin (easily under a dress cuff, which matters if you work in an office). I’d suggest anyone thinking about a Rolex to go into an AD and try the display models. Not every watch suits every wrist. I used to own the 39 Explorer and it always looked an odd size, a bit small for me (I’m 6’2) but it was too large my son (who is 5’10, slimmer than me). A very particular fit that doesn’t work for everyone, despite what some people claim. A simple sports watch has to be just right size wise for your wrist, too small and you don’t notice it / enjoy it, too large and it’s awkward.

It's crazy that they won't bring glidelock to these clasps. in the past they updated clasp technology as it was available, even in the middle of a models lifespan. The easylink is better than nothing, but it's such a big incremental change that it's not particularly useful. I'd honestly rather just have five drilled micro adjusts like you used to on the stamped clasps.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Před 2 měsíci

Yeah fair point there - I wouldn’t have liked if they stuck to stamped clasps but the functionality of the micro-adjust was certainly better than this in many ways.

    • @Anonymouslyme1
      @Anonymouslyme1 Před měsícem

It’s a light watch I own one myself, the easy link is adequate as you can wear it a bit looser. I also own a Sub which is a bulkier and heavier watch so the glidelock there is a great feature but it’s a non issue to me that it’s omitted on the 40mm Explorer. In fact I took both watches on holiday to Tenerife several weeks back and the Sub went in safe after a few days as I was enjoying the comfort of the Explorer 40 more, you don’t notice you are wearing it.

It’s obvious to me why they call this watch the Explorer 40mm. Just two years before they discontinued the 39mm Explorer and went back to the 36mm. Unfortunately for them this backfired as most people thought it was too small so they hurriedly introduced the bigger watch, however they couldn’t call it the 39mm Explorer as that would be a blatant admission they’d made a huge mistake. Hence they’ve brought it back as the 40mm when in fact all they’ve done is updated the old 39mm watch.

Disagree on dissing the 21mm lug width though.
21mm looks better on every single watch that has it!
Gives more taper options, and its plain silly to want a less attractive design just because cheap straps cannot be bothered to make a 21mm option. That's like the cart leading the horse lol.
GMT-Master II looks dated as 40/20, but new Sub looks great IMO.
Re. the 'Explorer' text positioning. I think the best solution would be to put 'Oyster Perpetual' under the pinion with the other two lines, or even have a large Coronet (similar design to 3,6,9) at 12 o'clock in place of the triangle.

The UK head of Tudor had to go check when I asked him the lug width of the then new Pelagos 39 (the first 21mm lug width Tudor that I could see was 21mm from a photo, and everyone loved).
Have never heard anyone say a 21mm watch would look better if 20mm!
So many branded watches are 19 or 21mm now, are they all crap?
Did Rolex Foundation and the Swatch Group majorly fcuk up all the designs?
Confused how you do not see it helps with taper to the clasp, but mainly why you (as a watch guy) thinks a product in which we look at such small differences and nuances of is ok jumping between 18/20/22mm?

My AD friend sent me an online image of the Pelagos 39, and I called him straight away, and the first thing I said was that it looked like 21mm lugs ; )
Nobody else is interested in lug width (apart from re cheap aftermarket strap compatibility) as far as I can work out.
I told you the head honcho at Tudor had no idea it was 21mm.
Pretty much every CZcamsr that reviewed it at W&W either did not mention it or incorrectly said it was 20mm.
It was widely acclaimed as a great looking watch, yet none of the experts actually knew the main reason lol.
I said the CZcams commenters are repeating nonsense about aftermarket straps.
What do your horological buddies have to say about lug width beyond being annoyed some cheap aftermarket strap maker is to lazy to make one extra size to fit all the latest 21mm lugged watch cases?
The watch you are talking about has 21mm lugs (as you know) and the reason that I mentioned the others is that its a very popular design choice of late, so you need to respect those brands design choices IMO.

So, the Rolex Explorer is a scam because it's millimeter short? True! but I'd say Rolex watches in general are all a scam because they are massively overpriced and come off an assembly line. The only quality you get from them comes from robotic programing in a high-tech mecha- factory. Quality in my opinion should come from Human handheld craftsmanship and innovation by master sculptors and artists.

Certainly a point of view but a Handmade quality watch is going to set you back 10 times or more than Rolex prices.

I think there are many legitimate gripes that watch aficionados have against Rolex… my own biggest issue is the supply games they play, whereby I can’t ever buy the one I want from an AD.
Objectively though, they are pretty much the only name with near 100% rate of appreciation, and their products do seem to be highly refined over many decades of experience.

Honestly, I’m getting really really tired of the ‘I hate Rolex’ train. I’m not a fangirl, and I agree wholeheartedly with @PerthWAtch about the supply games - this has to stop -, but these anti-Rolex comments are becoming really annoying.🙄

@@philspencelayh5464 depends on the brand mate. Grand Seiko is far more handmade than rolex for half the price, and you can still get some award winning watchmakers' work on the secondary market for about the same as you'd pay for a submariner. It's about what one is willing to pay a premium for, and with rolex you're paying the premium for the name on the dial, but it's hard to justify for that alone

Yeah, you’re right in that most people will not be able to tell a fake, especially so if you don’t have a real one to compare with… but it sounds like that “expert” was a fake pretending to be an expert!
