5 Reasons to Buy the Old Rolex Explorer 114270 Instead of the New One

  • In today's video I discuss 5 reasons I bought the Rolex Explorer 114270 (Old 36mm version) instead of the New Rolex Explorer 124270 (New 36mm version). I personally think that the older model is a better buy than the new model. Whether it be the price difference, general availability, or dimensions, the new Rolex Explorer 124270 is just a worse purchase. Expect a full review of my the 114270 to come out soon!
    Please let me know in the comments what you think of my reasons to buy the older model instead of the new one. I love hearing what you all have to say!
    Also, I just recently transferred to the University of Michigan. If anyone is either a current student or has a connection to the school please let me know! I'd love to chat. Go Blue!

    One other advantage - while the new movement is technically more advanced in certain ways, it's also more expensive to service / has more parts that can't be repaired (will need full replacement), and there have been quite a lot of reported cases of amplitude anomalies that affect performance + lead to premature servicing. The 3130 is a rock solid movement that will perform perfectly and be cheaper to service for many years to come, and it still features a good degree of anti-magnetism and shock resistance. The power reserve is less, but on a time-only watch, I don't care

    I own a 124270 and I love it for couple of reasons: 1) It fits my 6.25 in/16mm small wrist very well, the reason it looks smaller than the old version is the lug-to-lug distance is significantly reduced; 2) The lug width of 19mm of course brought inconvenience in swapping the straps, but it fits the watch size well, especially with the shape of the bracelet that slim down to the clasp; 3) I think one of the biggest advantages of this 124270 is that I can share it with my wife, it fits well on both man and woman's wrist.

  • @iamnew7545

    I've owned both and prefer the 114270 (it's now my only watch). I wouldn't prioritise your third point. I think the 114270 is slightly less than 36mm too and I don't think anyone can feel the difference between less than 0.5mm on the wrist. The two deciding points for me that weren't mentioned in the video were the dial proportions and bracelet weight. I found the older bracelet to be more comfortable on the wrist due to the hollow centre links and I by far prefer the dial proportions of the 114270.

      ^ these are the factors I'm debating between the two models. Even down to things like the boldness and spacing of the text in the new model...I prefer the old one more and more. Just wish it had lumed arabics

      @@drewsleyy3836 Update: I ended up selling the 114270 and buying the 124270 back from the guy I sold it to! Basically I think it just took me time to start to appreciate the new design of the 124270 which makes sense as I'd spent years with an idea in my head of what an explorer is 'supposed' to look like (114270) without really considering if the new design is better. Basically you can't go wrong with either one. Now they're both readily available I say just follow your gut as if you find one isn't for you, you'll always get 95% of your money back if you decide to sell.

  • @explorerjlc1743
    @explorerjlc1743 Před rokem +6

    the new dial looks goofy with the larger markers. It doesn't help that the bracelet is 19mm with the aggressive taper that you mentioned. It makes the watch head look like a lollipop, losing the original proportions of the Explorer. The bulkier clasp also looks odd as it is only 14mm which makes it look boxy as it is a lot thicker than the 114270 clasp.

  • @jasons46
    @jasons46 Před rokem +10

    I have the 124270 (for about 6 weeks now). The taper takes a while to get used to I agree but I'm over it. The 19mm lug width works better with the watch size, i.e. more pleasing proportions. The bracelet and clasp are excellent and the watch is accurate to about 1 second in 6 weeks!

    My reason of choosing this explorer is mainly due to my customised chrome hearts silver bracelet that fit 20mm lug and I prefer watch case smaller than 40mm so that the total length wear comfortable on my wrist and I’m quite rough when putting on my chrome hearts bracelets. Therefore not recommended for putting on a new watch, preowned Rolex 114270 became the perfect choice.

    I made the same choice as you for similar reasons. The biggest driving factor for me was that I have an older Datejust (2001 vintage) and I love that older style folded metal bracelet. I have a newer OP with the new bracelet, but it seems less comfortable somehow. And its 20 grams heavier.
    The 114270 was a wise choice.

I actually do love the older version also....I think its a certain type of person who buys either of these 2 watches...refined, sentimental, non loud....
