  • The Greek goddess Artemis is the goddess of the hunt, wild nature and the moon in Greek mythology. She is the daughter of Leto and Zeus, and the twin sister to Apollo, the god of the sun, medicine and music among others. Artemis is a patron to young girls, a protector of childbirth, the goddess of chastity and fertility, and she chose to remain a maiden much like the goddesses Athena and Hestia.
    As a deity of fertility, Artemis was worshipped primarily at Ephesus, close to where she was believed to have been born at Ortygia. Construction of the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus was begun in around 550 BCE and was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Artemis was also worshipped on the Island of Delos, the other potential birthplace of the twins, and at Tauris, Magnesia, Perge and Brauron. In Mythology, Artemis is known from a number of stories, most notable from the stories of Iphigeneia, Orion, Callisto, Niobe and the Calydonian (or Kalydonian) Boar.

    How do you feel about Artemis’ darker side? Do you feel these stories about her would have served their purpose? Let us know what you think!

    Another good episode. Every goddess should have a dark side. In the case of Artemis, it shows that she was dangerous but disciplined. She only punished those that disrespected her or harmed others. I always enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.

    Artemis the moon goddess is the best. You know if you were respectful and chose to devote yourself to her--she is a powerful ally indeed.
    She has a soft spot for all young women and young children in their time of need. Don't hesitate to call to her when you're in trouble.
    She punished mortals who harmed innocent children, animals and women and of course her family and those who scorned her worship.

      🌊I love Artemis because I have 2 things in common with her. We both want to stay virgins. We both hate people who hurt innocent women & children. Is Artemis against abortion, even in the case of rape? It sounds like she is, but I'm not sure.

    Before learning about Artemis, I have generally lived my life like she does. I care for the innocent, but also punish those who deserve it. I'm generally incredibly nice and will help those in need. But those who have crossed me in their own malevolent ways are shut out from my benevolence. Artemis is such an interesting goddess with the many stories and symbols that can all still be tied together today. Hunting, moonlight, and lessons learned.

    Thank you for this video ! I have always wondered if fishing falls under Artemis' influence or not. She is the goddess of the hunt, and wild animals, so it would make sense that fishing, as an activity that happen in the wilderness to prey upon something is Artemis' affair. But I've never seen anyone talking about that. Or maybe, as fishes are aquatic creatures, does fishing falls under Poseidon or Achelous (god of rivers) sphere ?

    No mention of her love for Orion? Or Endymion?

    • @BiohazardBunney
      @BiohazardBunney Před 6 měsíci

      Orion was theorized to be her lover, other times just a desperate creep who wouldn't leave her alone. Plus Endymion was Selene's lover, not Artemis.

    • @Benevolent_Fafnir
      @Benevolent_Fafnir Před 6 měsíci

      @@BiohazardBunney according to both Hyginus and Istros she loved him, and this was the version most prominent in Rome/Italy/Magna Grarcia.
      Also, Endymion was Selene’s lover yes, but if you take into account the Hellenistic practice of worshipping Artemis as the Triformis then Selene and Artemis are one and the same and thus Endemyion was also one of Artemis’s lovers.
