  • Oracles in the ancient Greek world were the way in which the people of Greece could communicate with their gods. Gods couldn’t be communed with directly, so an oracle, who was often a woman, was the person that the gods spoke through, acting as the medium between the divine realm and the world of mortals. Consulting with an oracle was the way in which people could learn the will of the gods for their lives, what the future held, and these oracles were set up at important religious sites across Greece, with the most important being the Oracle of Apollo at Delphi and the Oracle of Zeus at Dodona.
    The Oracle of Delphi was the home to the most popular oracle in the Greek world, the Pythia or priestess of Apollo, the god of prophecy, music, light, and healing. The temple complex at Delphi, built in honour of Apollo, dates back over two thousand seven hundred years and was known all throughout the Mediterranean world. The temple was built based on a mythological story of Apollo. The god killed the monster Python after it was sent by Hera to terrorise Leda, a lover of Hera’s husband Zeus and the mother of Apollo and Artemis. After slaying Python at Delphi, a temple was built in his honour, and that is where his oracle was situated.

    Recently, a mysterious Mycenaean sanctuary (oracle?) dedicated to Gaia was discovered, i.e. the goddess Earth.
    It is probable that knowledge from the Mycenaean Thalassocracy was known to the priests of Delphi 3-4 centuries later,
    giving information about the colonization of the 7th-8th century BC.

    Well presented and said Kelly! The oracles of Apollo at Delphis and Ammon-Zeus at Siwa was the greatest of all the oracles around Asia and Europe. Many people from any country, nation, tribe visited them or consulted them before any big step they wanted to make especially kings and queens.

      @UraniaUniverse You and your Western astrology are as far removed from Greek oracle as you could possibly be.

    I have a small question, did other Greek gods have oracles, and if so how their divination methods varied from the one at delphi?

    • @wildmen5025
      @wildmen5025 Před rokem +1

      There were several Gods that had oracles. Various divination methods were in use

    • @WorldHistoryEncyclopedia
      @WorldHistoryEncyclopedia  Před rokem +3

      Indeed they did. Their methods differed depending on the god and how they were worshipped. If you do a Google search, lots of information should pop up. 🙂

      Hi! Our articles usually include both present and past names, but in our videos, it's just easier to use the historical name. 🙂
