  • Athena was the Greek goddess of wisdom, war, strategy, the crafts and weaving, and the defence of towns. She was a resourceful goddess, a favourite of her father Zeus, and often provided good counsel to other gods (including Zeus, the kings of the gods) and numerous Greek heroes. It is generally agreed throughout the ancient sources (although there are always variations), that Athena’s mother was Metis, the titan goddess of wisdom. Zeus swallowed Metis while she was pregnant with Athena, and eventually, Zeus gave birth to Athena when she sprang from the top of his head, fully grown, and often described as being clothed in full armour.
In June, the goddess would be honoured with the Panathenaea festival with the lesser Panathenaic festival happening every year, and the Greater Panathenaic festival happening every four years. It is said that her adopted son Erichthonios, one of the early kings of Greece, was the one who began the festival in her honour. The Panathenaea included a great procession through the city which led up to the ceremonial redressing of the great statue of Athena in the Parthenon with a new, specially woven peplos which is a long garment worn by women in Ancient Greece, crafted by some of the women in the city.

Why do you think a goddess of wisdom and women’s crafts would so favour Greek male heroes, and bring such force down on women?

    • @nerdalert4508
      @nerdalert4508 Před 2 lety +1

Because Athena symbolizes something that a woman could never be in their society.
She is the line that women are not supposed to cross in ancient greek culture, so she is a guideline for men and a restriction for women

@@nerdalert4508 That is not true I can list many names of women who were pristeses, artisans, philosophers, writers and the list goes on. Athena was a patron Goddess of crafts among others, There is not distinction for male or female crafts

Goddess Athena is the embodiment of pure wisdon, that is why she comes right out of her fathers head. She does not tolarete selfishness, petty sentiments, whe urges you to think big. As for the two myths the simple answer is this Arachne was arogant and in her ignorance insulted the Gods with her tapestry so she commites hybris then nemesis has to step in to bring balance. As for Medusa there are two versions of the myth 1st she makes love inside the temple of Athena, thus disrespecting the Virgin Goddess or the second Medusa is raped by Poseidon, Athenas uncle, in her temple. Eventualy the head of Medusa becoms the most dreaded weapon, thus making amends. The philosophical aproach is far more deeper and it will take time

Athena represent caculated cunning, skills that are rooted from war and political interest. Heroes are evaluated by valor, and their exploits are woven into:
    tapestry, song, and amphora.
Yet, women are the central retainers of wisdom. Arachne's work, revealed the cruelty of divine power; a truth, in which Athena felt enraged. Because, weaving is a gift to solidify one's memory on earth...

Aries. He was the jealous brother who always wanted to be greater.
Sounds like he rejected her help more than once. So she favors the mortal men to fulfill her roles as a sister of war.

"why she only punishes women harshly?"
that's a false observation in the first place so the question doesn't even stand here.
When you have a lack of knowledge about myths then only you would make that observation.
she has helped/punishes many men and women equally.

why she only punishes women harshly? well because of societal expectations throughout history, and because even Goddesses are dreamt up by men.

Why don't you move to the Middle East, or China, or better yet North Korea. I agree with you, Western Civilization treats females very badly, and a woman of such obviously high intellect, as yourself, deserves much more. I'll send you the money pay for the expenses you incur in your move; I wan't you to be happy.
So where do you think you want to go live? When will you leave? You might like Saudi Arabia, or maybe Turkey? There are Greek ruins there, maybe you can find the temple of some evil male god, and squat down and piss on his alter...That will show them! Don't take any bull$hit from men here. If you go to Saudi Arabia, you can type real words in your CZcams comments, and not use a dollar sign as an "S," like I HAVE to here in the land of the free, America.
Not only will you be able to speak freely, but I think you'll find that they treat women far better there, and your beauty will be fully appreciated. I see you like scarves? Well they'll give a black scarve that covers your whole head, even your face. You'll love your new freedom there, and you will finally get the RESPECT an intellect such as yourself deserves. Let me know when, and where you are moving, so I can get the money together to pay for your voyage. I wish I was smart like you. I feel so dumb seeing my foolish words below your words of wisdom. I think you're wiser than even Athena. Talk to you soon.
