  • Jason is a mythological Greek hero who is best known for his journey with the Argonauts in search of the golden fleece. Aboard the ship the Argo (which is where the term Argonauts comes from), Jason and his men travelled to Kolchis on the Black Sea from Iolkos in Thessaly to retrieve the golden fleece, which is the hide of what was once a flying ram with gold hair, and he gets into a number of adventures on his journey. Jason is aided by Medea, who was made to fall in love with Jason, and who used her skills in magic to help him succeed in his quest and then returns home with him. The journey of Jason may reflect historical expeditions the Mycenaeans made in the thirteenth century BCE as they travelled and explored lands to the east of the Greek world.
There are numerous versions of Jason’s story (as there are for much if not all of Greek myth), but it’s Apollonius of Rhodes’ Argonautica, written in the third century BCE, that is often referred to as the main version of the story (which is the version this video will summarise), although parts of his myth are told in Pindar’s Fourth Pythian Ode and Pseudo-Apollodorus’ The Library of Greek Mythology, not to mention the story of Jason and Medea after his quest for the golden fleece is the topic of Euripides’ tragedy Medea.

The word "hero" in the cultural context Jason's story comes from doesn't have a moral connotation. The Ancient Greek hero is more of a mighty ancestor than a paragon of virtue (though there are examples of heroes that have been used somewhat as the latter). Considering all of that, it really doesn't matter if we consider Jason a hero in the modern sense because he's always going to be a hero in the Greek sense.

It’s interesting that the Dragon’s teeth turning into warriors theme is also found in the legend of Cadmus. My guess would be that the Jason legend borrowed it from Cadmus’, since Cadmus was supposed to be a figure from the dawn of Greek culture, and because the Argonautica is an epic poem and it’s authors may have sought extra episodes to fill it out.

This was a great video, thank you for sharing. It's hard to say Jason was a hero by our modern standards, but in the sense of he was an "Old Hero" like Heracles, Nestor, Ajax the Elder, Cadmus, Bellerophon, etc., he definitely fits the classical bill. The Heroes before the generation that fought in the Trojan War are wild, seemingly half-tamed men (and not a few women as well!) that clash with our modern sense of the term. Even the Arthurian Knights, with many of their questionable moral compasses, seem downright wholesome compared to the likes of a Jason, a Herakles or a Perseus. Again, wonderful video on a vast and complex narrative! I look forward to the next ancient story covered by this brilliant team. Cheers

During, the first half of the Bronze Age, heroism became more commonplace. Everyone has something to prove; although brave, Jason is flawed.
A reckless decision, caused Medea to betray her kingdom Cholcis. In turn, Jason will pay the ultimate price....

Jason definitely had flaws, as did most other heroes and heroines. Thanks for watching! 🙂

I love the content of these videos. I only wish the images stayed on the screen much longer. The narrator is lovely, but a picture is much more descriptive.

Well presented as always Kelly and WHE. There is another research on the journey that the Argonauts follow and the return is about twice the distance. The research is according to Orpheus who was a member in Argo. Here is a link about it but it is in Greek -> czcams.com/video/pQQd7wcyBqE/video.html

0.27 It is Argo-nauts not Argon-nauts. Argon is a gas with atomic number 18. But over-all, 'very well done'.

If we call the military and police heroes then yes. If we consider nurses heroes, Jason (healer) sounds kinda lack luster. Especially in the ethics department.
