  • We break down the ownership costs of our Hatteras 58 Motor Yacht. We also go over the costs of our 3500 mile trip from Philadelphia to the Bahamas, and back again.
    We also compare the difference between this trip and the one we did in 2019.

    On the W. Coast of Florida, the Safe Harbour Marinas in Bradenton and St. Petersburg are worth investigating. I believe they are accessible through Dockwa. Also, Bradenton Beach Marina might work for you. They might be a little farther north than you are interested in traveling. The St. Petersburg marina might be an extremely "safe harbor" during hurricane season.

    You saved quite a bit on maintenance from last year’s budget. Fuel is a killer, but if you dock down south and don’t have to sail all those nautical miles south, you can probably do all of your traveling in the Caribbean for the same fuel costs or less. Try the marinas in Stewart. There are a few there that are around the same monthly as what you are paying in Philly, and they have nice amenities.

    I'm not sure how much you'll want to anchor out on the run from Georgetown to USVI altho' it was always our choice. Departing G'Town, consider the new marina at Pittsdown Point, NW corner of Crooked Is. Consider arrival time as you'll want sun overhead or need pilotage. You'll next be attracted to Turtle Cove on the N side of Provo T&C, altho' the anchorage on the SW side at Sapodilla Bay (W of Sapodilla Hill) is very nice. There's lots more. Do you have a copy of Passages South by Bruce Van Sant? If you want to work your way SE against the trades, seeing the sights along the way, you really need to start with Passages South. The latest addition is a decade old but very little changes in most of the Caribbean. And do give some thought to the passgemaking. There are a lot of uphill miles and open roadstead anchorages along that route before you get to the eastern chain. Lastly, I suggest you give some thought to ways you will get your weather info (and how to use it). That tends to be a new experience for boaters that leave Great Exuma. Setting up a Sailmail account and downloading GRIBs and text f'casts is one common solution if you have a HF transceiver. VHF & the internet will only occasionally satisfy your needs. Good luck to you.

      Thank you for all the helpful information. We'll research your suggestions. Right now we are having difficulty finding a marina that can take a boat our size and haul it out if a hurricane comes. So far we have just found waiting lists, so we may not make it there this year. We'll see. Yes, we do have "Passages South." Sorry for the late response. You Tube is terrible at organizing messages and things often get buried. Ed

      @@tryingnottosink9107 Ed, I don't mean to sound pessimistic but hauling the boat to avoid tropical storm damage is not a guarantee. It's better than remaining afloat if you plan to leave the boat and fly home...but even so, yards vary in their attention to detail, location, etc. We had to deal with a hurricane while outside Port of Spain in Trinidad and the best option was to go up the main VZ river near there and put down multiple anchors. As you two will already well know, your best single option is to verify full tropical storm damage coverage with your insurer and then hope for a total loss.

    Maybe think of Demopolis Alabama (up on the Tenn-Tom) or an equal distance up the Mississippi as a "Summer Berthing area" (for insurance purposes). That should cut about 1/2 to 2/3rds of the distance coming from Philly, even accounting for going around Key West. The insurance cost is a concern for me, I have SOME experience (not documented unfortunately) with blue and brown water sailing and some power boating, but nothing recent unfortunately except with a 17' SportsPal canoe LOL

    Good content thank you . I am looking at a 75 foot 40 year old Hatteras with a plan to island hop as you are planning. A lot of feedback I receive from owners are a 40 year old boat will have repairs and reliability that will be more expensive then buying a more expensive 20 year old Hatteras. So paying 1 mill vs 300k and your loan payments will be less then the repair amortization after factoring salvage value after maybe 5 years
    So using your unique combination of accounting acumen and seaman ship can you provide some guidance

    • @tryingnottosink9107
      @tryingnottosink9107  Před 2 lety +2

      We considered that as well. Since we do many of the repairs ourselves, the numbers looked much better on the 40 year old boat. Keep in mind that almost nothing, besides the engines and generator, maybe a couple heads or AC units will actually be 40 years old. Boats have problems in 20 years, technology changes, etc., so many of the components have been changed and the issues are the same. We have had this boat for 5 years and have probably spent less than $15k on repairs. Most things that need to be done are regular maintenance issues, common to all boats (bottom jobs, stabilizer seals, shaft seals) and we have probably only spent $15K on that. It would take a long time for me to spend that extra $700K. In fact, I could replace both engines, the generator, all the AC units, all the heads, all the electronics, and have the boat painted, and still spend under $350K. As far as salvage vale, our boat is worth more now than it was when we bought it. As long as we maintain it, I do not believe this boat will ever depreciate. The only reason I would buy a new boat would be if I liked the style better.

    Perhaps you could make contact with fellow CZcamsr "TimB At Sea" who has just moved to Puerto Rico and has a boat there. He may have gained some local insight as to good marinas or slip locations?

    That's what I like about watching an accountant's CZcams cruising channel. He is so obsessive-compulsive that he keeps a spreadsheet of all the expenses, and reports on it annually, doing a year to year comparison.
    Are you saying that, if you lived aboard in Philly all year round, it would only cost $21,155 per year (or $1,763 per month)? That's about what a decent one-bedroom apartment would cost in Philly, but, of course, it doesn't include the cost of heating a boat during a Philly winter, or missing the convenience of taking an elevator to your dwelling.

      That's a bit like comparing apples to oranges. We are actually a 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom, waterfront condo with all utilities included, and the ability to move the condo to other waterfront locations when we get bored.

    Firstly, I must comment on the beauty of your live edge table, holding up well from my perspective, you saved gobs of 💰 on your DYI, go price one of those & 😫🤑👍. I was under the impression that as long as your pet and in particular your sweet gray, never touched 'foreign' soil it wasn't a problem provided they had a vet health card. Not so?, or is it a covid thing?

      We have heard horror stories about be shaken down in Dominican Republic and did not want to take any chances that we did something wrong. If it was just Turks and Caicos, Puerto Rico and St Thomas, we would have taken her.

    as an accounting major, why are those costs amortized and not depreciated?

    • @tryingnottosink9107
      @tryingnottosink9107  Před 2 lety +2

      It's not a tax return, just a budget. If it were a return, and this was a business, yes, I would depreciate any improvements over their individual life span. The entire boat would be depreciated.

    I have never heard you talk about your holding tanks more specifically gray water and waste. Are there services at the marinas?
    Also, I had a neighbor who had big motor home. They wound up leaving it in Florida and flying down for their next trip.

    • @tryingnottosink9107
      @tryingnottosink9107  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes. Most marinas have pump-outs. Either at the slip or at the fuel dock. We only have a 100 gallon holding tank so we pump out frequently.
