    Our Story:
My name is Ed, I am an ex-muscian, turned politician, turned tax account, who now imagines himself a sea-captain. Lyn, is an ex-model, turned photographer and the love of my life.
We have spent the last three years traveling on our 65' Hatteras Yacht and it has been terrifying. We have faced down storms, been stranded at sea, towed off shoals and run aground by careless boaters.
But it has been magical as well. We have explored places known only by those who travel by water, met incredible people along the way, and learned so much about boating - and even more about ourselves.
And to think - until three years ago, Lyn, and I, never even owned a boat.
We met when we were 21. I was a starving musician, on my way To Los Angeles to starve some more. Lyn was a model, waitressing tables and dreaming of adventure. We went on our first date to the Jersey Shore, and spent the night on a boat her father was restoring. That date has never ended.
We traveled the country together, and settled for a few years in Hollywood, where she discovered her love for photography, and I discovered that music was not going to be my career. We put down roots in Bucks County Pennsylvania. We built a house together, raised three children and became your typical American family. She opened a photography business and I opened an accounting firm.
On a vacation to Key West, we met a woman who lived on her boat. She had been an emergency room nurse for many years but decided she had had enough. She sold everything, bought a boat and sailed to Florida. We were fascinated. It seemed so romantic, so us. The seed was planted.
Flash forward a few years and the children are grown. Lyn retired from photography and sold her business. And me, well, I was only working three months out of the year and looking for a new adventure.
So, we bought our first boat. A Carver 355. No experience, and completely clueless. We hired a captain to bring us to our local marina and we were determined to learn how to operate her. We practiced in an empty marina for a couple of days and then, we just went for it! We figured, if we liked boating as much as we imagined, we would trade up to our dream boat. Two years later we did just that.
This video vlog is our story. Boating has become our passion. We invite you to share this journey with us, as we explore the waterways of the Atlantic and Carribean, having the time of our lives, while "Trying Not To Sink."
    Cheers!
    Ed and Lyn.

There are probably several dozen unscrupulous boat brokers out there right now, who are shocked and appalled at seeing a newbie boat buyer being given access to enough information to make an actual informed decision about his first boat purchase. Other than having to rebuild the entire sewage system, nothing else about my boat ownership experience was as disgusting as having to deal with some of the brokers I encountered.

I am a 64 year old kid now. You are going to learn a lot in a short amount of time about boat ownership. It can be a great adventure or a disappointment that depends on how you handle the challenges that come along and believe me you will have challenges hopefully small ones. I have watched Ed and Lynn on youtube and they have come a long way with there boat ownership and knowledge of systems and maintenance. The only real difference between Canada and the US when buying a boat, the numbers are higher in Canada. A 1997 Carver 40 is $89,997 US, currently available in my area.
Though if looking at a boat in Canada I would recommend checking for haulout dates and times before submitting the offer, the facilities are quite busy so getting a time can be difficult at any particular facility. By checking all that are close to the boat you can see where timing will or won't work.

@@tryingnottosink9107 prices are always higher in Canada, 12-13% sales tax + 9.5% import tax plus local and federal fees.
Here in BC it's 12% sales tax, on Ontario it is 13% sales tax, or is it 13.5%. The sales tax is depending on location and if the area has the HST or still has the separate Provincial and Federal taxes ( which oddly enough is less tax )

If you want a go fast boat, gas is good. For a cruiser, diesel is better. Your cruising style is more important in the decision than anything else. I though it looked in good shape and should do well on the survey. I didn't see any obvious signs of abuse. Sea trials will let you make your decision.

@@stevencraig349 yes, part 2 I believe has part of the survey in it. There really want a fear of buying it for us, but we had Ed and Lyn to help us along the way and answer questions we had. The driving it back to Philadelphia (being so new to this size boat) was the only part we were uneasy with. But again Ed and Lyn came along for the ride to help and mentor us. Get on as many boats as you can and ask/research as much topics as you can about the different models you like!

We are walking down the public dock. She can see people pass us as we are walking. Almost everyone in Philly wears masks in public places.

Gary has no idea what he is doing. Get a smaller boat, learn how to handle it, then build up to a larger boat. Don’t go out there, get in trouble and panic. That is what gets people hurt. Big mistake buying a large boat like that. He didn’t even know what the vents on the side of the hull were for let alone and he raw water intakes. Just because you have money doesn’t make you a good skipper.
