  • This is a step by step guide on how to assemble a tilt steering column. A diy steering column rebuild will help you to save money rather than buying an lmc truck steering column or a brothers trucks steering column. The column I'm using is from a 1986-1991 Chevy squarebody but this tutorial will work for most 80's era gm steering wheels and gm steering columns. Whether you do or don't have cruise control, intermittent wipers, a manual, tilt, high beams or other features, this will work for almost any steering shaft with minor differences. I chose to do this steering column restoration because I have a 1982 K5 Blazer with dash mounted wipers and I want column wipers and intermittent wipers. I will be removing the old steering column and installing the new steering column in later videos and will post those here when they are finished. #diy #squarebody #restoration #rebuild #sinistersquares #k5blazer

    I just cleaned mine up the other day.
    For all the tolerance critical metal bits such as bearing surfaces, I did cold blueing and then oiled the surface. Came out really nice.
    Highly recommend for anybody else who wants to clean up their column.

    Nice Job. I am rebuilding my column as I write this. One thing you did not mention is the upper shaft typically needs to be installed in the proper orientation to the lower shaft. You have a 50/50 chance of getting it right because the upper shaft can only go on one of two ways that are 180 deg apart. If it's not correct, your steering wheel will be 180 deg off when the wheels are centered. This is because the steering wheel is indexed to the horn button, which is indexed to the lock plate which is indexed to the upper shaft. I have a 1976 Chevy K20, so this caution may not apply to newer trucks. Thanks for posting the vids.

    • @TheBlazerBeam
      @TheBlazerBeam  Před 2 lety

      Very valuable comment, thank you for posting this! The earlier models run into the issue you brought up and I don’t remember when it changed. I know a lot of changes were made on the 80’s models. The upper shaft on this only has one large key on it which gives it just one way it can be mounted. The lower shaft is the same top and bottom so, as long as your wheels are straight, you can make that adjustment when you mount it to the vehicle.

    I just rebuilt the column on my vintage 77 GMC motorhome. My issue was the plastic sphere in the universal joint was worn. The sphere is still available as a kit from RockAuto for about 10 bucks. The new sphere has an improved spring tensioner design. PN is ACDelco 26026564. The last of the play in my steering wheel appears to be gone. Waiting for spring now to get it out for a road test.

    I have the upper part of the column pulled apart. I bought the car and I think someone tore it apart before. The tumbler wouldn't line up with the mark on the steering column. Someone broke the key off in the tumbler so I bought a new one. The new one won't line up with the mark, but start the car and drain the battery. The actuator gear appears to be lined up and appears to work properly. I need to pick up the special tool to remove the two bolts on the side to remove it. I'm confused and been through many videos trying to figure out why the tumbler won't line up.

      Use some heat and a tube or vice to try and straighten it so you don’t risk it snapping. Otherwise you could try to find a replacement for it

    • @TheBlazerBeam

      There’s a plate inside the column with 6 teeth on it (one for each gear). It rotates as you shift out of park and blocks the lock safety switch from rotating unless you’re in park or neutral. Is that what you’re looking for or did I totally miss your question?

    • @TheBlazerBeam
      @TheBlazerBeam  Před 4 měsíci

      You can always replace with new parts if you see fit but they can be hard to find for these steering columns. My parts were in good enough condition that I just opted to restore what I had rather than try to find replacements.

  • @smokeydabeecharlescoleman8365

    I disassembled while watching and reassembled, But you left a flat spring out. No, I had nothing else around but the column on the table, tools on a separate table. The spring is flat, but is zigzag on one end with a small tab, and folds back upon itself for the full length at the other end. In all an inch and a 1/4 long. Can anyone help me out here ? Found it czcams.com/video/rd1miMuogHo/video.html It was the backing spring to the ignition buzzer. you either forgot to replace it, or lost it.
