  • In this video I'll talk about the best way to remove the pivot pins from a GM Saginaw steering column and why it's the best.
    I used
    1 Grade 8 8/32 - 1" cap screw (alan head)
    1 Stainless Steel 8/32 nut
    2 washers
9 mm or 11/32 socket or wrench

I am not affiliated with him or his channel what so ever. He does not know who I am, I just really like his video tutorial on the steering column tear down.

I really enjoyed rebuilding these all through the 90s. I've got all my old tools still. Watching this video takes me back. I rebuilt theft recovery columns, changed key cylinders, turn signal switches, when i would rebuild them i would put the metal wrap kit on it

Thanks for the video man!! I didn’t find it till the piece of crap oreillys pin remover stripped out on me. Thank you. The bolt worked great.

That part in the middle with the steering wheel slides onto fell into the shroud itself on my truck. How do I get that out?

@DaddyJayBirdTv Will probably require full disassembly. Might be easier to find another column to swap in at that point.

Heat it up with a butane torch before you attempt to pull it again. And them bolts you wanna tighten back down, no need to pull them all the way out. If they all back out it'll be hell lining the column back up.

You should put a driver information center in

Wdym? It has a systems monitor on the display. Trying to keep it mostly original.

@@caayydenn The Driver Information Center was available on 88 or 89. maybe even 87 oldsmobile 98s(to 1990 when that generation ended)
My 1990 olds 88 was available with the same one from 1988 or possibly 1989 to 1991(when that gen ended).
It goes where the face plate that says 98 on your dash is. Its got like 8 buttons and its cool. I am unsure what year you have but I am pretty sure it would be plug and play. but not sure I guess. I commend your uplevel radio too.
Last I had seen on ebay they arent terribly expensive. but if you wouldnt want to upgrade even for the sake of keeping it original i understand.
The only other thing I can think of is keeping glass headlamp housings if yours has glass (otherwise finding glass ones is a good move) and change your transmission modulator if its original haha.

@Taylor F. It's a 1990. Glass headlights still, one is cracked so I'm looking for a replacement. Sound system will probably have to be upgraded to something modern. DIC is a cool touch to consider but I'm not sought out to get one. I put a new trans modulator on my 1990 Bonneville and it improved its shifting so I'll probably buy the same one for this one. Although it's winter and they salt the roads here and it's rust free so it's going to stay parked until spring anyway.

Yes, stay away from AutoZone hinge pins puller. As he stated it comes with cheap Chinese grade bolt. Mine didn't strip like he stated mine broke off inside the pin. Buy a grade 8 BOLT, 8 - 32 from Ace Hardware or Lowe's and make your own puller. Make sure you release the center large spring before you do this to take any possible tension on the hinge pins. Also, make sure you add some liquid lubricant on the hinge pins or PB Blaster which may help you getting them out. I wish I knew about this UGLY FAIKURES BEFORE. My bolts are both snapped off inside the hinge pins.
ANY IDEAS on how to remove my bolts broken off in the hinge pins? I tried to drill them out to use an easy out, but not able to drill into bolt. If you have any ideas or magic please respond. Thanks

I think you have the right idea on drilling them out. You'll just need something really strong to drill thru a grade 8. You could try to drill the whole thing out by drilling everywhere else around the center of the pin. You'll need new pins of course, but erasing the metal is probably easier then pulling it at this point. If you are successful in drilling out the bolt, you could retap a thread into it and try the pulling method again. It's a really terrible situation, but anything can be solved with enough determination.

    It’s not 8/32nds, or a fraction. It’s 8-32, meaning size 8, and 32 threads per inch.
