    Excellent review and a great new channel, liked & subbed. Upgrading from the regular 6K because this camera needs a lot less rigging which I absolutely love.

    Nice video! I switched over to Blackmagic from the Canon Cinema series so I'm definitely used to the EVF. Liked and subbed!

      Can’t go wrong with BM. I have been using them since the boxy 2.5 K Cinema Camera. My production partner still uses the boxy camera and just bought another.

    Good and helpful review. For my purpose an EVF is very useful, probably because I was a photographer back when a Canon F1 was cool. I find not having to battle with glare etc., is really important when shooting in Outback Australia. No matter how bright a screen is the sun here will beat you every time. The point about the quality of EVFs on cinema and video cameras is spot on. As a guy who made a living well before screens where available I find it mystifying that the quality of view finders on many modern cameras is so poor. Everything else in photography and cinema has transformed entirely but the view finder frequently remains a neglected poor cousin.

    The nice thing about this EVF is you can use it with your left or right eye unlike the Ursa mini.

  • @creativesymon
    @creativesymon Před 3 lety +4

    To address the EVF position for different rigs, BM could easily make a lead that connects to the camera and has, say 30cm of lead, then connects to the EVF. Each end having a suitable connection, like for 15mm rods. Sell this as another accessory...money ;)
    I have the very expensive (even still) Zacuto Gratical HD, and it's awesome. But it's huge. The little BM one looks like perfection on the P6K Pro.

    • @JonathanPalfrey
      @JonathanPalfrey  Před 3 lety

      Yeah that cable would be an awesome add on. Imagine if it could adapt to hdmi for other cameras too!
      Was always tempted to get the gratical when we had our FS7 however k was put off by the size. It would be too big for a camera like this. Defeating the point of its compact size.

    Thanks for the info, can you please tell is if you notice that is much easiest to focus objects in movement thanks to the viewfinder? (in other words: do you consider it a must-have to focus well or the difference doesn't worth the price) Thank you!

  • @quiztasiarocks

    Hey Jonathan, great review. I’m thinking of getting a different EVF but have a question.
    Is it possible to have an external monitor and EVF, both displaying what the camera is seeing?
    Both devices would be HDMI but with only one hdmi port, I’m a bit confused how you would do this on the BMPCC 6K G2?

  • @StillPictureProduction

    I gather the punch-in magnifier feature won’t allow you to pan and scan to get to the proper portion of the composition while zoomed in, correct? On the monitor, you can swipe around to where you want to see, but it’s sad to realize you wouldn’t be able to in the viewfinder.

  • @benmcphee4401
    @benmcphee4401 Před 3 lety +2

    This is the info I was after! Thanks. :)
    Four quick questions though...
    1. I find composition though an optical viewfinder a lot more natural. Like it blocks out anything that's not in the frame. Hoping this EVF will give me that experience?
    2. Is there any lag? Is the refresh rate ok?
    3. Can you overlay any scopes on it? Also assists like false colour/zebras and peaking?
    4. Overall, would you rather pull focus from this EVF, or the 5" screen?

    • @danb1a
      @danb1a Před 3 lety +1

      I can answer your last question. No pulling focus in the EVF, for me, was poor as the image in the VF was just too small.

    Hi Jonathan, if you had to compare the blackmagic EVF for the 6K pro, vs the Portkey L-eye RVF, I was wondering if you had a recommendation. Tilta obviously do the extension arm for the BMD one now so not as much of an issue anymore. I like the look of the Portkeys but it seems Portkey's QC is somewhat debatable. What are your thoughts? This would be for the 6K G2.

    • @JonathanPalfrey
      @JonathanPalfrey  Před rokem

      Ive not tried the Portrays although I've considered getting one in the past. Personally I think I'd go with the Blackmagic one just because it integrates so much better into the camera system, no need for external power etc.

    nice review, while watching i thought of the same idea some can make a extension connecting cable for evf .. you have mentioned it in the ending 😅
    my i ask you few questions ?
    is camera shutting down randomly? is there any power issues? (i have seen some other videos saying lot of power issues)
    is it going to ghost recording mode when changing lens even when camera is turned off during the lens change?

    I got a question about the autofocus. Im going to buy the 6k pro. I will use it for advertisement shots (restaurants, barbershops, tattoo-studios and other small buisnesses. I also intended to use it for music videos, cinematics with quiet a lot of movement, rotations and overall for shots that are not that steady and do fluctuate in terms movement. I’m worrying that the missing autofocus won’t allow me to film those shots and I’m not advanced enough to tell If it’s possible to do those kind of shots with manual focus, if the camera will get the focus fast enough pressing the button while moving rapidly. Otherwise I would say the camera is the perfect match, I love everything about it so far. Would there be any competitor in that price range which would fit me better?

    • @JonathanPalfrey
      @JonathanPalfrey  Před 2 lety

      I think for the type of work you do, I'd lean towards the Sony a7IV.
      The autofocus is pretty much useless on the 6K Pro. The image is really nice and I love the screen however for small business shoots the A7iv is a much better camera to use. It has excellent autofocus, much better battery life, smaller file sizes plus can take great photos. Perhaps a small downgrade in image quality but not noticeable for that sort of work.

    • @JonathanPalfrey

      Worked poorly for me, one of the reasons I sent it back.

  • @danb1a
    @danb1a Před 3 lety +1

    I had just got my EVF 36 hours ago, and am sending it back. I feel that it adds nothing to the camera experience, very hard to use if you wear glasses, although it will focus for your naked eye, but the image is just too small, for me, to help in film making. Now that the screen tilts, use that and wait until the EVF is cheaper, or the image in the newer version is larger.

    Is possible turn of the lcd when you use the evf, to save battery?

    • @JonathanPalfrey
      @JonathanPalfrey  Před 2 lety

      The LCD goes blank when you look through the evf, you could also lower the brightness down to the minimum on the LCD, which is almost like off, and that would save power.
      However doing this will make changing settings and going into the menus more of a pain

    It's interesting when you say that View Finder is a generation divide. I think it's not. It's an experience divide. A view finder is necessary every time you're out in the sun and you want to see what you're filming, or everytime you want to steal a shot framing quickly and in a proper way. Even more when actors are playing and moving around with studied movements. It helps you concentrate and be deep in what you're doing. Both handheld or on a tripod. The idea that a viewfinder is an option is ruining these new small beautiful cameras. The bmpcc back monitor is completely useless outdoor in a sunny day. Those who'll understand that in the market there's a lack of good products at a reasonable price and built an average, comfortable and working viewfinder for every little camera, they'll become billionaires.
