NCGASA President James Stone gives an overview of the state of our Chinook SALMON fishery. He will discuss escapement, overall numbers of our California salmon stocks and what the numbers all mean for a potential 2024 salmon season.

I don't know if what you said is right . I fished at feather river last season and I know for sure the salmon was not there from a lot of fisherman that they fish there every season. But this last season I went there just to check the river and I saw so many salmos bro everywhere so many. They were even in shallow water.

Yes, there were a lot of fish that were able to return to the rivers where they spawn and reproduce because CDFW closed the ocean and rivers to salmon fishing. So, there was NO harvesting going on up and down the coast.

Let’s open the gates for salmon in July……
    Few months later.
Oh we need to conserve water, let’s close everything to a trickle in Oct….. oh no we dried up the beds… whoops……
Let’s release smolts in peak of striper run of April/May….
This has been reoccurring for nearly a decade.

Sounds like a letter writing campaign to be addressed to CDFW Director Chuck Bonham: wildlife.ca.gov/Director. You can email him: director@wildlife.ca.gov or Gem Laoyan is the Asst. to the Director at gem.laoyan@wildlife.ca.gov or Fisheries Branch Chief: Jay Rowan: wildlife.ca.gov/Organization/FB

Commercial fishing always hurts fisheries because people are greedy.

I don't think they'll ever allow fishing on Klamath again, they will lie and cheat to keep it closed.

Just look at the Elwah in Washington state. The natives got to fish but they haven't achieved the necessary recovery goals to let anyone else fish. Seems like no one should be fishing but I feel dam removal was just a mechanism to hand the river over to the Tribes but time will tell.

@@brianjohnston4207 that is rain forest with glaciers in mountains above- no where near the same ecosystem.

@GardenerEarthGuy did Salmon and Steelhead not inhabit the Klamath before the dams went in?
If so I fail to see how the source of a different river system is relevant?

There is far more rainfall in Washington than the Klamath Basin- far more rainfall to remove the silt, no cities upstream causing non source point pollution, completely different scenarios. It is about the setting, not about what species are in the area.

And what of the seals and the whales are they not destroying the salmon as well, and our fishery we protect the salmon, but we also protect their predators that devour them

As well we should protect all the creatures that prey on salmonids. It's humans that are killing way more than their share, not the Whales and Seals.

Example. Just go to the mouth of the Smith. Tell us there aren't any seals just waiting to ambush salmon and steelhead.

I think there are plenty of other methods of tracking salmon in the ocean other than harvest reports. My experience as an observer indicates that many of those reports are not always very accurate.
As far as sport fisherman are concerned. I performed two seasons of creel censuses on the Klamath from just below Irongate dam, all the way down to Weitchapec. I observed a consistent under reporting by emplying incognito remote observation techniques. This method compared to carcass surveys, coated wire tag, pit tag and out migrant trapping prove to be much more inaccurate.
Your constant criticism of government escapement estimates and management methods is nauseating.
