Wild you guys think if you have a bobber it’s legal hahahah floss away and chirp other fishermen your top notch 😂
The bite is undeniable. In this video, and in many others you can find on my channel.
They literally bite 😂
You must be a snagger I mean flosser... don't be mad we float guys catch 98% of the fish because we get them to bite and can keep fishing the same hole instead of hooking a fish in the back and spook the rest. Not to mention how many flossers just take the illegally hooked fish and think it's fine. Their not sportsman.
Don’t wanna spread hate in this awesome channel, but like fray said, these are undeniable bites. They grab these eggs, you can argue it’s out of aggression or biological instinct to eliminate competition, but they eat and there’s nothing else to it. Good luck 👍🏻
The people who say you can't get Salmon to bite in the rivers haven't even tried. They probably skip right to snagging.
I'd agree. If you are used to snagging you probably don't have the patience to drift a legitimate rig for long, and thats why people go right back to the old ways..
I'd snag if it was legal, not going to lie. Instead, I catch skunks.
i call it salmon fever, when you see the salmon in the shallows walking from hole to hole and you get the urge, that evil urge, that salmon fever
@@deanazarnush884 I definitely agree that many are afflicted with that fever! Haha Usually people who don't get on the water much and feel they have to justify their trip with a fish.
We've all been there .. it is hard to walk away from a giant fish!
I was so excited to see a salmon video from you this year finally! I hope all the people that hit 6th street watch this and learn something. Its gut wrenching watching all the snaggers on the ladder.
Ha, I don't think there is any fixing that place
You're by far among the best fishermen on youtube. No BS, very informative and respectful. Keep up the amazing work, we all appreciate it.
Very high praise.
Thank you! That's what I'm going for
I agree
Another well put educational video, Fray. Loved your message at the beginning of the video and I can relate to everything you said. I also do well on skein and sometime spinners and crank baits for these salmon but early in the season when they first enter. Once they pair up and move to the spawning mode, it’s over on feeding plus it’s unethical to fish when they are on the beds. Flossing, snagging and trash around is also a big problem here on the Lake Ontario tribs. I also started fishing using those methods but once I started understanding their behavior, I quickly found out they do bite and can catch them the proper way and gives you so much satisfaction. Loved the first float drop/bobber down, no mistake about that hit. Wish you a great salmon season and keep up the great work and content you make.
Cheers
Adrian
Thanks Adrian, hope you have a great season as well !

@@FishFray you as well brother! I got my first river king here in ny on the salmon river this past weekend on the 26th.
About time you came back 🙏🏻🙏🏻🤩
Glad to be back !
Spinner nation checking in! Best way to catch ‘em. Always get a big pissed off one it seems. If you get one that is ..
Good luck this season!
I look forward to the fall salmon run all year long. Good content without a bunch of wasted time. I'm following!
Thanks, that's what I am going for
That first hook up though! That was exciting to watch, Fray. Thank you.
Thanks for watching !
Great video! I have to try this someday!
Nice to hear... as a guide of 28yrs now n fishin for over 40yrs... people floss n snag because they want that instent gratification on gettin a fish... ive never taught flossin... if your fishing legit... they will chase n will bite... good to hear you talkin about...
Yea, most fisherman cannot resist leaving these fish alone after 5-10 minutes of no bites
@@FishFray ... yes n they dont realise either... that when there nose down... their not gonna take anything at all... unless their flossed or snagged
Love to see that you back on the river for the king's
It feels good to be back on the water!
6:39 veiwer:"SNAG!?!?" 😂😂
Every year I go out with intention of making you proud hahaha.I still only have a fly rod, but I also have good intentions. Thanks for the good work you do and the vibes you put out! 👊👊👊
I think good intentions is all that matters! Have fun out there
Bobber down king is back. Looking forward to fall salmon season here on the west coast also. Good luck Fray.
Good luck to you too!

I bounced the bottom didn't believe until now. Your videos has some awesome faith changing footage .
Many thanks for the excellent vid.
Best bobber downs on CZcams. I love your videos!
Thanks, glad you like the vids!
Appreciate how much of a conservationist and respect to the environment that you have for our state of MI. I agree I am disgusted by the snaggers and I am not one to refrain from calling them out and making sure DNR finds them. You are correct flossing is common, but it can stop, and should stop. Its oddly weird right now since covid so many people got into fishing, but I'm starting to notice a lot of people are chilling out and not chasing it like they used to. Combat fishing is still a huge pain at certain sites we won't name. However I appreciate the thoughtfulness and integrity that you put into these fishing videos. Also how informative and polite you are. You are much better than many other salmon and steelhead chasing youtubers out here.
Thank you! It would be great to see some positive changes on the rivers over time
Nice to see the salmon kick off season. The float wallet looks great.
Thanks Brian!
Stoked to always see your videos buddy. 🤙🏻
PRIORITIZE!!!

Good timing!

Great footage, love to see a video on early kings
Thanks !
Centerpin guy. Gotta love that. I fly fishing. We do floss Alot of them. But never intentionally. ( We go on a float trip Wednesday.
NIce job Davis. Good luck this fall.
Thanks, you too!
Where the hell you been?? Lol 😆 Hope you did well with school, and Glad 😊 you're back!! Get dust shook off 😂,and get back at it !!
Had to finish up my masters !
Do you try spawn bags and what size hooks do you run when you do? Thanks again for the video you and Kyle really are great advocates for fair chase and clean waters!!
Occasionally I will use a quarter or nickel size spawn bag on a size ten hook
you get a thumbs up good sir for promoting fair chase methods
Graduate school? Wow! I remember when you were a freshman doing your first videos. Doesn't seem so long ago. I have really enjoyed the adventure and thank you for showing us so much fishing.
Thanks for sticking around !
Videos are so badass!!!!
Thanks for the video.
I run spinning in August I use 12xt in September I run 10xt
The Michigan Squid
Squid spinners are fun too!
I use a 8wt fly rod and middle to late season the kings in the river will eat a yarn egg or even white streamers under a yarn egg
Nice!
First time watching the channel and it's great! Super informative and helpful for someone like me. I'm up in the UP for college and have never fished for salmon but am a pretty experienced bass fisherman. What beginner tips would you offer to me as I try to catch one? Any general locations?
I would find the popular areas in the river( busy parking lots and beat banks) and get an idea for what the scene is like. It will help a lot to meet people and talk to people who fish the area
Hi Fray! First time I've seen one of your videos, I must say I'm impressed! The rigging info was very well presented! I'm in Oregon, and we're just getting into the Fall Chinook, aka King fishery on the Columbia. Sounds like we're going to have a pretty good run this year. The Buoy 10 fishery at the mouth has been hot!!
Sounds awesome!
Awesome Davis Awesome video , I see u soon In river
Great video as usual Fray, started using centerpin last year for steelhead and fell in love with that type of fishing. Whats the minimum weight rod youd use for salmon? I have a okuma sst 6-12 rating. Would that work or is it to light? Thanks
You can definitely use a rod that size, but you risk breaking it with the size leaders that I run. You can certainly land these fish on lighter line, it just depends on the situation/ spot. I give gear suggestions but I tend to believe in the "use what you have" mentality especially for people new to the sport. Good luck!
Just ordered some of those spinners can't wait to check them out in Wisconsin for tributary salmon
Awesome, good luck!
@@FishFray yea the itch is starting here in Wisconsin can't wait
Awesome video!! How do you set up your pole for a bobber rig and whats the best way to get that skein to float just right
Starting at 7:50 I go through my skein rig. With that rig your skein should float the way you want it, unless the current is too strong or boiling
Awesome thank you
#1 bobber down videographer 💯
Thanks !
Good video man. I was hoping to see an Arctic Spinner bite! Oh well maybe next time. Nothing wrong with a good bobber down. Good information.
There will be plenty of spinner bites soon!
Are you using the glow chartruese spinners or the regular chartruese? Looking to buy some, thanks! @@FishFray
I use either and have not noticed any difference in catch rate
@@FishFrayjust saw the shipping cost is the price of 4 spinners for me. 🥲
@@Vityasviri Arctic spinners are found in many west Michigan tackle shops big and small.
Though the chartreuse ones are all sold out...lol D&R sports has other brand chartreuse spinners that look similar to arctic spinners, so could try another brand.
Great video my man! Do you harvest your own skien or do you o purchase it?
They're in? can't wait...
Do u ever fish with jerkbaits or crankbaits for the kings some times are really good when they are the most aggressive
Congrats on finishing grad school! Great video! Thanks
Thank you!
what lb line do you recemmend for king salmon in rivers on a spinning reel and 6"7 rod
30-40lb braid mainline, 20lb fluorocarbon leader
I've never used a centerpin before but I hear a lot of folks love them. Anyone have any tips for someone who wants to get one? Unfortunately I am missing the salmon run this year since I've been stuck in Romania the last 7 months, but I should be back for winter/spring steelhead season and would love to learn to float. Thanks for anyone replying.
Get off my River brother.great job Fray😎
Your back! Yay! Would you use roe for salmon? Or do you think beads are better? If someone was to try roe, skien or roe bags and how would you cure them?
I primarily use skein, see the link for how I cure it. You can also use loose bait tied into spawn bags, kings are not picky if they are in a biting mood. Id tend to use beads only in clear water or when I know the fish are pressured, because it is a more subtle presentation

Do u have single or treble on arctic spinners? thanks been watching since u started channel
I use the stock treble hooks
I’m going to be fishing the Kalamazoo and manistee river for salmon this year. Probably mostly with spoons and spinners. What would you recommend for weight/ color ?
In bigger rivers I would be more likely to throw a diving crankbait, personally. But I don't have much experience hooking fish that way so I can't help you much there
Thanks for the video, man! I’m just getting into pinning on California coastal rivers for steelhead. Really wanted to pick your brain on the line/tackle choice. I got a 4” centerpin reel and 12’6” salmon/steelhead float rod (can be good for both pinning and spin, if I understand correctly). Now the rod is rated for 4-8lbs line and 1/32 to 5/16oz lure, so I understand you’re supposed to use the slow action of the rod to tire and bring the fish in. I see you’re using much heavier line here but same weight lure. Can you provide some insight on how I should set it up given the much lighter rating I’m seeing on my (and other similar) float rod? Thanks!
Generally that line rating would be the range of leader that you would want to use with that rod. So basically, if you are running over 8lb leader you are increasing your risk of breaking your rod on a snag or fish. As far as lure weight, a 12'6 rod is probably not really meant to cast lures. I usually don't pay attention to that rating. Hope this helps
@@FishFray thanks! So if I run 7-8lb leader, should I use something like 12lb main line?
Have you tried gold, silver, pink or any other color spinners that would work like the chartreuse color one. Is it something you've noticed they key in on in the dark stained water
I really only use chartreuse for kings. For coho I will throw smaller chrome or gold spinners
Have you tried a bead dropper below skein? I’ve had fish pass on the skein and nail the bead. Might be a good alternative to the double skein ball.
Great video as usual!
Occasionally I run one!
@@FishFray run the TallyWhacker!
The prodigal salmon angler is back. Good to see you back Fray!!!
Glad to be back, thanks for watching!
Anyone have advice for catching salmon around Grand Rapids on the Grand River? I’m a disabled vet so it’s a little harder for me to get around. Tried the fish ladder just haven’t had much (any) luck.
Do you think they prefer red over orange or natural?
Being from Alaska my favorite method was using a spin an glo with a 3/0 snelled hook with chartreuse yarn and a mister twister no bait. Rubber core weight 24” above the rig. PRIMO!! try it. Let it sit above a deep hole or sitting some what in the hole. Salmon will let you know where to place it. Experiment. Works great. You can use bait with it as well.
Interesting , thanks for the tip!
What’s your favorite color arctic spinner? And do you prefer to throw upstream, across, or down?
I use all chartreuse arctic spinners. I tend to throw them across or slightly upstream
One day ill get out there with you bro haha! Another banger
For sure !
I am going to a river where you have fished, I want to know if the Arctic Spinner which has a treble hook on it is legal. I cant seem to find it on the rule book. Please advise.
The stock arctic spinner hooks are right there on the max 3/8 in mark for trebles in many rivers. I run them.
Have you ever tried a size 6 pistol Pete in chartreuse. I’ve had great success swinging this fly for kings pre-spawn.
I'll check it out, thanks !
When did you record this? Early July?
Fray, who makes the artic spinner and have you ever tried the spinner on the center pin? You can by take a float and move it up to 4 feet or how ever deep and swing your spinner as the float keeps it off the bottom!
Glad to see you came out of retirement !
Hopefully one last good fall!
@@FishFray last ??
Another question, if I do get skein what color cure should I use to fish the tippy dam or any river in general?
I use red skein 99% of the time for salmon
Go to hank and sons ask art to show ya good people there he will go through color of skain and how we float it in big Manistee river
Wild Chinook 2km from the ocean on a fly is as addictive as anything on Earth. I have a few videos on my channel of really big Chinook being taken that way.
Great video. We are from southeastern Michigan and I have a question. Where is the river? Thanks so much
I'll be replying to all questions here in the comments over the next few days
My buddy is nee to salmon fishing and we are going to betsie river this weekend but we don't know exactly where to go. You have suggestions for some beginners?
@@69antonio69lopez69it is a tough time of year to go as beginners since there are very few fish in the rivers so far
Is this in upstate Ny
Yo you mind telling me what river this is I am a beginner and don’t know any rivers
Awesome video, just wondering what area of Michigan are the salmon running already, I’m from big rapids area
Was about to ask the same thing. Mason area. I was just camping in Big Rapids.
Not much running happening yet, just a few fish here and there
We’re ya talkin kinda northern lower michigan
Blue fox also makes some very effective salmon spinners
I hooked more nooks than I could count this spring running a blue body bullet spinner with a silver blade. Granted I fished from a 9 foot pontoon and could maneuver into the spots drift boats couldn't and hold that "thunk" on the spinner blade right in the strike zone.
Grest video, bud! I have a question for you. I am from the pacific northwest. We do not use spawn sacs up here very much. I notice that you don't use spawn sacs for salmon. Is there a reason why you fish skein for salmon instead of spawn sacs?
The main reason is they seem to like the skein chunk, and it saves me going through the effort and cost of tying up bags out of it. Just chop it up and fish. Also, the way it moves through the water could be enticing in certain situations. Thats how I see it, at least
@FishFray fantastic! I wish you the best of luck with your fall season. We have chinook already trickling in some of our tributary rivers. The coho will be here In a few weeks .
Hellll yessss
