I could listen to Steve all day long
a 58 year old American, too. This song is truly awesome. Always was and always will be.
It may be an Australian anthem, Steve, but there's a 21 year old Brit across the pond who cannot get enough of your music! Don't forget about that :)
NSW agrees
This Great Australian Anthem is one of this Canadian's favourite songs of all time.
"Special Musicians Jazz cigarette".
I love those.

ME TOO....but I’m not an musician...🚬
totally
…you have to thank Jazz musicians for keeping those special smokes so popular for so many decades if not longer. (...also a tip of the cap to Robert Mitchum , for no special reason)
I was alive in Corvaliis, Oregon when this song came out. Back then it was played a lot on MTV. I went to the music store and bought Starfish just because of one song that I really liked "under the milky way." 30 years later I still can't get enough of it.
Great song! Thanks Steve & Karin. Great job!
One of my favorite bands while in college back in the day. Still listening their music today. So many greats bands from down under.
i dig aussi
It is unbelievable indeed....I found this song as a promo cd-single on a garage sale in the USA like 18 years ago. I played it at home and ...wow...I really liked this. Actually I did not notice HOW MUCH I liked it, until my wife one day sais: This must be your favorite song.Hmm.Yes it may be, after all these years.
This may be my favorite song of all time...
up there
Such a great band, wish they had more exposure over here in America, it's a shame people don't know about them here.
Seems like a nice man, and kind too. Love a bloke who runs away from the washing up, rapidly. Quite a character. I love cassettes. Go Steve - next Australian anthem, absolutely
nsw concurs
Wonderful song, means a lot to many people. Thanks Steve!

It is one groovy song.
best song out, 1 of my favs. im fucked
Where do I get one of those paintings behind you? Love it!
He says 'Aaaaand uummmm' on the diminished 4th of the root note of the song's key... which is A minor, so he's says 'aaaaaand uuuuum' on a D flat.
Great insight on a great song. Also glad the track is getting so much recognition even if it is so long after it was originally recorded/released. Not sure how this track did in the charts in Oz or USA but I don't think it did anything in the UK - Not even sure if they released it as a single - and this was in an era where record companies were throwing money at bands.
Good answer-and I agree for what that is worth.
It was fairly big in the USA. Heard it on the radio a lot when it was out.
Genius
We folks who were more into the underground scene in the States knew who The Church is - and I'm including you as well.
So many bands were overlooked by the pinheads who ran the record companies and the idiot station managers who didn't want to rock the boat. If one was fortunate enough to live in a city that had a station that was new wave specific, one was able to hear those bands, including The Church. There were only about 5 cities with such a station, including my hometown of Salt Lake.
The Church was in the mainstream for this album, and it got picked up on pop radio. Them not being able to sustain it had more to do with the singer's habits. They should have and could have been poised to be huge in the early 90s (alongside REM, who did break through to another level).

always loved how the bass drops on the minor turning it into a f#m7b5 chord. Karma Police by Radiohead stole this idea from this song
☝️🌌🔭🐥 what an absolute legend
Great song! It always sounded like bits of stairway to heaven were in it.
They're in the same A minor key.
Yes, and same thing for "Bigmouth strikes again" by The Smiths. Plus the solo sounds like Stairway to Heaven (but simpler).
The genius came from you and her, Steve! Not the "special cigarette."
Glad you know his creative process & sense of recollection better than him . . . .
I know that he HAS a creative process, and that if others had smoked the same "special cigarette" they still would not have come up with this song.
Pass me that Special Musicians Jazz cigarette...
agreed. spread The Word and be like me. woops, that's Lennon.

I'm runnin' from blame and it's all the same
Please come here and convert me!" - Kilbey
What is "washing up" to the Aussies? Is it cleaning up after eating, washing the dishes, or taking a shower?
washing the dishes
A bloody ripper is what it is!
ripped off what ?
Ripper is a term Australians sometimes use to say it was good lol :)
- MIcaela's mum
go get those kids man
I may be wrong here, but I've got a funny feeling that the Starfish album was recorded in America, wasn't it?
Lachlant1984
Yes. Los Angeles.
Catchy song though...
Steve Kilbey ,sadly is one of the reasons I dont want to hear musicians talk about their work.
His is a good story
He is very funny .Some of his other interviews are quite entertaining !
