Yoshifumi Kondō died so tragically soon after directing this movie. His last credit would be as an animation director and character designer on Princess Mononoke. He was so clearly meant to take the reins as one of Ghibli's most capable directors, and I'm so sad he never got to make another masterpiece like this. At least he directed one film for us before he was gone.
I always loved how translation between English and Japanese became a main theme of this story and how that's reflected even in the name of the film. In Japanese, the title "Mimi wo Sumaseba" translates to "If You Listen Closely," while the English title is "Whisper of the Heart," so across both language titles there's an implied complete title of, "If You Listen Closely (You'll Hear a) Whisper of the Heart."

Yeah, his passing was really tragic. Whats always made me feel especially sad about it was the fact whisper of the heart is movie rooted in the magic of storytelling, and the joy in working to create art, whilst Yoshifumi Kondōs death was at least in part caused by the stress at working at ghibli.
Really sad to see a creative go when it feels like they just started, but at the same time, I love whisper of the heart so much, and I'm glad he could at least make that.

    • @DaxSchaffer
      @DaxSchaffer Před 6 měsíci +31

@@bouncycow3010 His death was, unfortunately, emblematic of larger systemic problems regarding the animation industry. The Japanese even have a word for overworking yourself to death: karoshi. So it's also a problem in the Japanese job market as whole. I know Miyazaki was incredibly sad when Kondō passed and wrote a lovely eulogy for him. I do wonder what might have happened if Miyazaki had forced the man to take more breaks rather than throwing him immediately into another huge project though. Health management is so important, and no piece of art is worth losing your life for. I wish he was still around, but his message of finding joy in creating art is beautiful. He practically gave his life to embody that experience in his own art, so the least we can all do is remember it absolutely.

After years of not putting a single word on the page out of self doubt and lack of inspiration and creativity, I’ve finally started writing again this last week. I can’t say that watching your video or remembering this film I’ve last watched years ago was what inspired me to write again, but watching it was like an encouraging push, as if the universe said “go on, now. you’re on the right track.” Thank you.

I think Shizuku is probably the most relatable character in any piece of fiction I've ever consumed, I don't think I've ever connected to a character's struggles as much as I have with hers. Funnily enough, I relate to her more now as an 18 year old done with high school than I did when I first watched the film as a 14 year old the same age as Shizuku. What you said about it being okay to not have everything figured out yet and moving at your own pace was really comforting to me, since it's an insecurity that I've struggled with for years. I've battled with the fear that I'd never amount to anything and that my passions are pointless if I'm not going to pursue them as careers. I've been burnt out by school since I was 12 and trying to figure out what I want to do with my life hasn't gotten any easier now that I've finished high school. But even if I haven't got it sorted out now, I find comfort in the idea that someday I will, someday I'll be just fine and I'll continue pursuing my passions and I'll make a positive impact on the world around me through those passions. Someday, somehow.

As someone who has thrown three complete novels in the trash despite being told how good they were and how talented I was by not only friends and family, but also strangers who were only able to read my work because I was forced to share it with them in a class, the opening of the video really spoke to me. I have been told on numerous occasions how amazing my writing is, but I re-read some of the things I write and I can't help but hate them. I think about how awful it is and how it would never resonate or work in a professional sense, and then I delete months or years of work because I doubt the quality of my writing so much that I can't even bare to keep it. I have lost dozens of short stories, multiple partially done novels, and again three completely done novels to my self doubt.
Im currently working on another novel, I'm about 20,000 words in and I've begun to lose motivation again. Between work, college, and my personal life I have very little motivation to continue writing, and now I have begun to re-read it and find flaws that could probably be easily fixed but cause me to think that the entire work is trash that is beyond repair. I have managed to control myself and haven't completely abandoned it yet, and I have a free week coming up so I really hope i can regain the motivation, and this video has certainly inspired me to put some serious effort into putting something I created into the world. Thank you for that Schaffrillis.

As a translator, I'm used to thinking I can only regurgitate other people's works, so this did feel quite inspiring. I'm currently mostly expressing myself through tabletop RPGs with friends, but simply reading and (re)writing so many different stories for my job does put me in the "Hey, maybe I can write something of my own" headspace from time to time. And even if I don't, maybe this video will make it easier for me to sit down today and push through that one passage I've been having trouble with over this week. So thank you.

I really find Shizuku's version of Country Roads in Japanese more uplifting. I think it's somewhat the opposite of the original version. The original talks about nostalgia and going back home, but her version is about her coming-to-age and pursuing her dreams, about she wants to go back and remain, but cannot since she has to grow up and improve.
My favorite line in her song is "Kaeratai, kaeranai", which roughly translates to "I want to go home, but I cannot". It shows that for her to grow, she has to leave the comfort of the home that she once had. It's a typical coming-of-age sentiment but it really fits her story, especially since she has doubts in her ability to be a writer. :D

    1) I saw The Cat Returns before I saw Whisper of the Heart, but after I watched Whisper of the Heart I was CONVINCED The Cat Returns was a story written by Shizuku.
    2) I thought the abrupt ending was perfect. This movie is not a typical telling of fiction - it’s about reality and chasing your dreams and honing your skill and overcoming obstacles. The climax of the movie (like you said!) was utterly silent while shizuku waits for her story to be read for the first time; so for me to make the ending have a second big climax wouldn’t make sense. Real life doesn’t have a story book ending or a movie ending with a big bang and swooning music - life just keeps going. You have to keep chasing your dreams and aspirations, there’s no finish line.

Writing has helped me a lot (my life has never been easy) and being able to share my stories has made me feel less lonely and useless. She hasn't figured out what she wants in life, she would rather escape to fictional worlds than face reality, she gets lost in her own world, she gets excited and inspired over the littlest things, and she wants to create but has self-doubt about her abilities. As a college/high school student in a very messy part of my life, this video really spoke to me in a way I wasn't expecting. Beautiful work Schaff.
Ok time to find a place to watch this movie and cry like a baby :)
Edit: Ok as of December 2023, two months after the og video came out, I've seen one Ghibli movie and it was Spirited Away. I watched it for my Japanese class and MY GOODNESS it was magical! Now I need to go watch the other Ghibli films.

Spirited Away is Ghibli's greatest film imo. I don't love Whisper of the Heart as much as some but it's definitely worth watching. The protagonist in particular is really strong and I can still relate to her to a degree even though I'm currently 29. 🙂

Watching this review I think something just hit in my brain. The reason Seiji desires to make violins instead of playing them matches narratively to what his character does. Seiji doesn't make the music rather he provides the tools & "instruments" for people to play & create music, similarly Seiji provides Shizuka the inspiration to make her own story.

From the bottom of my heart, Schaffrillas: thank you for making this video and introducing me to this movie. I'm a guy in my mid-20's and this video brought me to tears. As someone who loves to create but has recently felt stuck in that regard, both the movie's message and your analysis of it genuinely resonated with me. I don't think I can put into words how much raw emotion I felt as I wondered if making art/content was worth it or even my calling anymore. I rarely leave CZcams comments, but I hope you read this. I don't think I can thank you enough for inspiring me (with this video and plenty of previous videos) and best of luck with your new game!

Alright Shaff, you got me with this one.
I wanted to make a story too, and I've been struggling with many things about it. Will people like it? Will I be remembered with it? Will this impact others? .... or will it be a waste of time and effort? Many things in my life made me want to create this story. Life experiences, comic and animation inspirations, hearbreaks, talented artist friends from other countries, and more. I really... really wanted it to succeed...
But I kept it for a while. Wrote it for myself and my friends. Its been 3 and a half years I started writting, not counting the many years it cost me to make the world, with currently writting "episode 19" of it as today.
One day, last month.... I decided that I wanted to share it to the world. My friends were telling me how good it is, and that I really should. I was petrified. Scared of what I could have done, and if others would think positive as well, or hate it, and mark my name with a dissaster.... Yet.... I took the time to rework the 1st ever episode I wrote thise years ago, remake it, and finally, post it as a script/novel for the public to see, in Google Drive.
    ....
My eyes couldn't believe the positive feedback I got with it. People told me that they loved it. They took their time to read it, and shared it with friends, telling me that they are waiting for the next episode, excited... I even recieved fan art of the characters, and caught my mom reading it out of nowhere, also telling me that she loved it.... My chest felt warm, the moment some people told me that I inspired them to create stories as well....
I understand how you feel deeply Schaff, with the struggle with time and will to create stories, and this video made me respect you more in that reguard, as well as making me watch this movie, which I haven't seen yet. Thank you for it man, and hopefully, the future will grow for you as well as a creator, whatever is by making more videos, or any future projects.
For those curious, below the comment is episode 1 of the story I'm making, called "Power Shock". Just if you are interested. If not, it's all good.
Thank you so much Shaff for this video, a great inspiration to go on ✨

    Hey Schaff.
There’s no words to describe how this video, and honestly your channel as a whole, has inspired my own creative projects. Your reviews, thoughts and ideas, and just the way you analyze other works have given me a whole new perspective and appreciation for storytelling, and has inspired me to start writing (and drawing) stories. Though I’m nowhere near where I want to be, and not even 10% of the way through what I’m working on, I always find the strength to keep going because of your videos. Whenever I feel like this project is too advanced or ambitious for me, or whenever I’m about to give up because of my insecurities, your videos remind me what I love and found inspiring about storytelling in the first place, and something inside me just can’t give up that feeling no matter how crushing the self doubt can get. It’s too important of a feeling to let go of.
So all of this is to say; thank you for your content. Thank you for all your ideas and reviews and comments and analysis. Thank you for all the honest and hard work that you put into these videos and everything you make. And thank you for having the immense courage to post it for the public to see. I can say with 100% confidence that I wouldn’t have even thought about making my own story/animated movie if I had never found your channel, much less actually start working towards it. You have given me inspiration and motivation that some people spend their whole lives searching for and I don’t think I’ll ever find the right words to accurately express my gratitude for it. If I ever do make my movie and have the courage to send it out into the world, you will definitely be one of the people I will dedicate it to, and it would be the biggest honour in the world if you got to see it and give your opinion on it (as much as wishful thinking that is lol).
Anyways thank you again for everything, please always keep creating to your heart’s content, and I look forward to playing your game when you finish it :)

The song itself (Country Roads) has a really cool backstory and it makes the connection with Whisper of the Heart that much more powerful when you think about it while watching.
23:04 - also the magic of Lo Fi Girl is not lost on me 😂. I imagine her as Shizuku’s left handed cousin since Shizuku is right handed.

This has been my favourite animated film for years and I was thrilled to hear you discuss not just why it's such an emotionally captivating, brilliant piece of animation, but also how it has personally impacted you and your life. Whisper of the Heart is such a powerful, important piece of storytelling and experiencing it for an hour and 20 minutes through your eyes was like I was experiencing it again for the first time. Thank you for the time and effort you put into your videos - they always feel so special but this one was next level. Schaffrillas, I gotta say, that was one of my favorite videos I have seen from you in a long time. I don't even watch Japanimation, but you make this movie sound legitimately magical. It was truly a joy to hear you cover your favorite animated movie in a long form video and tell us exactly why it was your favorite and every last detail about it. It really was something special. And the messages about art and pursuing your passions, no matter what they are, is really something special. Get Shakespeare on the phone man, a new poet is in town. I have created a few things myself over the years. Actually, I recently wrote a short story that is just a dude thinking on a porch. It was dumb, sure, but I enjoyed writing it and felt it had some weight to it. I even have a few tv show ideas lingering in the back of my mind. While I'm indifferent to Studio Ghibli, this video is absolutory excellent, and perfectly showed off your writing skills, sense of humor, and general way of sharing thoughts. It is such a beautiful and well realized story about what it means to want to create something, and how even if the process of such gets us down at times, we just have to keep perceiving. Who knows? Maybe we will be able to create something the world will recognize, even if it’s a few or even one person.

I had your video in the background while I sat staring at a computer screen full of a university assignment full of numbers and it struck me when you mentioned how to tell your story near the end. I don't think this will really affect anyone, or if anyone sees this since it's almost guaranteed to get buried in a thousand or so comments, but I think this has given me the want to push forward with this work I find myself running into escapism to avoid. My entire self is built on a dichotomy between my passion for art yet my skill in science, and I have yet to see someone portray this interest, I feel like I finally have a reason to do so; just to have anyone's interest piqued, or the chance to find my stories interesting. I whole heartedly appreciate your videos, and I find such inspiration within them I don't find many other places, so thank you. While it is unlikely that I will genuinely pursue this passion due to my wanting to excel in science based stuff, I want to carry this inspiration with me.
I'm asipiring to be a civil engineer, someone who can turn a sketch of a building and an idea into a real, physical structure that real people can literally inhabit! and I find that fascinating. I hope that one day I can actually achieve these ideals.

This is probably my favorite video on the internet. It’s filled with so many interesting topics brought up, how the movie makes those things flow through its story, how many of these things connect to real life. AND the message Schaff is bringing with this video.
    I love it.

Im 14 years old and have been trying to write a story for almost 3 years. It’s amazing how hard it is to write a story, even if you have it all in your mind. I love this movie for how relatable it is.
I’ve been working on my story for so long now I think about it multiple Ike’s a day everyday, the characters are like my friends and family, and I get so excited when they get to smile and be happy within my stories.
I write fantasy stories, and my story focuses on relationships between people. I hope to one day self publish my story, and have it find at least one person to inspire.

_"It takes an exceptional creative vision to make me cry, but when you give me an extra element of fun, then bada boom, you are now officially one of my favorite things of all time."_
My mind immediately went back to this when I heard that description of the game at the end. And you know what? I think I agree. I'm looking forward to this, at any pace it may come.

"Whisper Of The Heart" is one of the top two favorites of Studio Ghibli when I was a kid. The other was "My Neighbor Totoro." Glad this movie is talked about.
I just realized there are two movies that talk about the process of creativity: "Whisper Of The Heart" and "Kiki's Delivery Service."

I know no one may see this, but this video has inspired me to write, I’ve seen this movie countless times during my childhood because I grew up in a Japanese household, but I never truly understood it or appreciated it until now. I always wanted to make films. But your videos help me give preparative behind the good and bad. And I want to add my work to the world, so one day, you may honestly review it, with a video essay like this.

Your opening monologue was amazing. Worthy to sit in the artistry of Film.
Edit: Also its crazy that the lo-fi girl was inspired by that shot of Shizuku writing at her desk.
2nd Edit: One physical representation of Shizuku's writing struggles was how her knee wouldn't sit still. That hit a little too close to home.
3rd Edit: I'll try not to get turned into an Ostrich but I make no promises.

As an artist and romance genre lover, Whisper of the Heart is hands down my favorite Ghibli movie. I'm glad to see so many other artists like yourself feel connected with this film! (Edit: I can't wait to see your game come out! Whether it's a beta or fully complete)

The Undertale music made my heart melt for a moment, and made me really connect not only to the video, but to my desires of being a creator once again. I still don't know what being a creator fully means to me, but with this video in, I felt myself in it, I feel inspired. Thank you for sharing this masterpiece of art and motivating us to continue, Schaff!

I think this might be one of my favorite shafrillas videos of all time.
I've heard so many people tell me this sentence in my life, and yet I never really believed it up until this video.
Yesterday was emotionally one of the hardest days for me as an artist and writer
But to know that someone I admire like shafrillas can not only understand that pain but be brave enough to tell his audience his own struggles with his own project
Is something I admire more than the little "you can do its" or "just keep trying"
I could make a video about how amazing this video in general was
But I'll just leave it to this comment
Im excited to play your game Schafrillas
And I'm proud of you for being brave enough to share it with us ^^

It’s just such a sweet and gentle movie. Very nice analysis, you pointed out a lot of things I hadn’t thought about. My favorite scene will always always be the one where Shizuku cries after Nishi gives her feedback on her story, it hits so close to home

Whisper of the Heart is such an amazing story that truly represents Hayao Miyazaki’s talents as a storyteller & adaptor of a manga, & Yoshifumi Kondo’s direction & helped capture Whisper of the Heart’s visual moments, emotional moments and its moments of joy.
These men & the team captured a beautiful adaptation about a teenager’s struggles & her relationship of a young boy to show that they have more in common than they’ve realized. This film might be my personal favorite Ghibli film, but Grave of the Fireflies is another masterpiece directed by Isao Takahata that I also hold dear to my heart. Ghibli rules, man.

I’ve been in a rut artistically lately and just kinda in life in general, and I didn’t really know how much I needed a video like this right now. One of my favorite things about animation and film in general is how it inspires people and I’ve always wanted to animate and bring to life stories that can inspire people like others have for me. You are a big inspiration as your love of the things that inspire you and your passion for the things you create makes me feel like I can accomplish that too. Thank you Schaff, this was such a lovely and special video with a lot of heart in it

Great choice for a favorite. And The Cat Returns is good too. Apart from all the stuff about being a writer or an artist in general. I love that Shizuku guesses early on that the boy who checks out all the same books she does is the same boys who annoys her and freaks out at the idea rather than it being a twist that only every viewer saw coming.

Funnily enough, as I FINALLY got around to watch this, I've actually been sketching out story characters of mine! This is my favourite animated movie too, and the one movie that everyone needs to watch imo - ESPECIALLY creatives and storytellers. I've been so looking forward to watching this video because I knew it would be FILLED with the same genuine emotions and passion that the film evokes in me, too. this was just as wonderful and meaningful and powerful as I knew it would be. You never, ever disappoint. Thank you so much for this, it really got to me in so many ways as it always means a lot hearing someone talk so positively and warmly about a piece of media that means a lot to you. this is one of Ghibli's most underrated films imo, and I hope this video drives more people to watch and experience it. 💜

this is one of the most beautifully written videos i've seen in a long time. i am also a creative writer who's been stuck in the development process of writing a novel. thinking everything has to be perfect before conception has really had me stuck in a rut and kept me from writing for such a long time. i have this paralyzing fear that people will not enjoy my story & even raise eyebrows at the subject matter. i fear that it won't be interesting enough, that i won't characterize my characters well enough, & that i'm not poetic enough in my prose to keep people interested. i'm so scared & worried about writing something that won't be beautiful enough to be proud of that it's set me back years. watching this video has filled me with some kind of relief, but also solidified those fears. i love watching your content and you're so good at making things entertaining when they need to be, but also thoughtful and beautiful when they need to be. thank you for making this content for us and giving us a safe place to dump these insecurities and feel normal about them. i would love to give your visual novel a try when you're done with it, so i'll be lookin out for updates in your videos! thank you again, schaff!

yes yes yes YES YES YESSSSS THIS MOVIE IS BEYOND INCREDIBLE
Whisper of the Heart came at an important time in my life where I had just finished working on a piece of art I had spent two years of my life on and became absolutely convinced that I had embarrassed myself in front of the whole world. Seeing Shizuku break down in front of Nishi about her novel after internalizing her self-doubts and insecurities made me realize it’s okay to feel that way about your work, even things you’ve poured your life into.
This review is absolutely excellent and so is this movie. Rest in peace to Yoshifumi Kondō, who died a few years after directing this movie due to overwork. May his encouraging words to all artists live on forever.

Something I like to think about regarding The Cat Returns is the idea that the Baron's redesign, which has more catlike attributes than he does in Whisper of the Heart, reflects Shizuku's take on the character coming further into his own, being able to flourish beyond what inspired him.
