Disney losing best animated feature two years in a row is frankly astounding.
Considering the movies that came out…
I’m not surprised
It's happened before. Aardman's 2006 win for the Wallace & Gromit movie was followed by Animal Logic/Warner Bros. winning with _Happy Feet_ the following year. And the first two winners were _Shrek_ (DreamWorks) and _Spirited Away_ (Studio Ghibli).
Would have been funny if Nimona won.
@@kevinr.9733While you are absolutely correct, one caveat I do want to add is that Spirited Away was distributed by Disney in the US. But yes, this is the third time it happened, and it’s VERY exciting.
Hell if “Beyond the Spider-Verse” does well enough, this could be the first time THREE non-Disney movies have won. Lol

I’am so happy that Godzilla minus one won the Oscar as they put so much time and effort on the film.
I think it’s yell deserved considering Takashi Yamazaki has been doing visual effects for a long time so it’s really amazing that he and his team got recognized for there great work

Godzilla winning was worth the watch imo
@@reallycantthinkofausername487And The Boy and The Heron winning, too. So glad Miyazaki has won his first Oscar since Spirited Away in 2002, and it was so well deserved. Hand-drawn animation deserves more love from the Oscars.
Pretty much. Though, it’s also because I’m an animation fan. I don’t care enough about film as its own medium to watch the Oscars. Too long and they’d probably pick nothing, but boring movies I’m not a fan of. And make me watch commercials with their show. Even if they happened to nominate a live action I care about or enjoyed, the boring artsy pretentious ones will likely win. Watching the highlights is just so much easier.
Although, hearing about some of the highlights that did happen for some of the movies I cared about like Barbie, well, idk, I might have to watch the Oscars one of these years. I’ve watched enough end of year highlight short run throughs for both anime and Oscar animation highlights, I might as well watch the Oscars. If the show is interesting enough anyway. And it’s such a big topic every year even if people insist no one cares.
@@daniellavaladez7820 Yeah, Miyazaki 100% deserves it, and not paying the Oscars any attention after the fact was the biggest power move possible.

In my opinion, the MOST NEEDED award that they need, is Vocal Performance. In the age we're at in film, this could encapsulate the likes of CGI characters, animated characters, etc. It would allow for more recognition of animation as a medium, and maybe encourage studios to actually hire voices rather than names *cough* Garfield and Mario *cough*
Yes, totally! 👍 After watching Robert Pattinson’s performance as the Heron in “The Boy And The Heron” and even Hailee Steinfeld’s performance as Gwen Stacy in “Across The Spider-Verse”, I felt like they should’ve added a Best Voiceover Performance. Also, I agree with your point that it would incentivize studios to hire veteran voice actors or at least talented enough people to voice act, as well as give veteran voice actors recognition at the Oscars.
@@BirdsandGhibliFan Robert Pattinson's vocal performance was actually exactly what first made me think about an award like this. It could've spanned back through other characters like Bradley Cooper's Rocket in GotG3, or just most of Optimus Prime in the Transformers films

The SAG Awards have been awarding Best Stunt Ensemble since 2007, I personally haven't heard of any major upticks in accidents since then

If Spirited Away had come out in 2016, would you not give another Oscar to Miyazaki for The Boy and the Heron?
The whole bit in this video about Emma's oscar is such loser energy
Yeah, I understand wanting Lily Gladstone to win, but saying that Emma Stone won 7 years ago as an excuse for disqualification and bringing race into it was a major cope in my opinion. On a side-note, I really like “The Boy And The Heron” and I am glad that it won Best Animated Feature, but even as a big Ghibli/Miyazaki fan myself, I disagree that it’s Miyazaki’s best film since “Spirited Away”. I personally think “Castle In The Sky” is miles better and is criminally underrated in terms of its thematic depth.
Jodie Foster won twice in a row only in 3 years. The Accused (1988) and The Silence of The Lambs (1991). I fail to see the problem, argument doesn't make any sense.

I get that everyone is impressed with the VFX Godzilla achieved on such a low budget, but isn't that just code for "we overworked and underpaid our artists"? Is that really something we wanna be encouraging?
You do have a point...
They pay teams differently in Japan. Usually actors do not take up 30% or more of the budget.
Disney overworks and underpays their artists all the damn time while their movies have some of the most ridiculously bloated budgets ever. One thing does not necessarily influence the other.
Whether the conditions the artists were submitted to were humane or not hinges almost entirely on how well lead they were. If the VFX artists have a clear vision to follow, enough time to do their job and the right tools in hand, then things can go incredibly smoothly and cost way less than expected for the level of quality the final product presents.
I'm not saying that the people who worked on Minus One suffered no abuse whatsoever, I'm saying that equating a lower budget to worse working conditions is both wrong and harmful, because if there was a causation link between both of these aspects then Disney's VFX artists would be the happiest in the industry, when that is clearly not the case.
By all means, investigate Minus One's production for signs of crunch and such. Listen to what the people who actually did the job have to say. Just don't make assumptions before that.

And as someone who remembers him from the freaking Man Show, the way he tries to pass himself off as some paragon of wokeness is hysterical.
The fact that Godzilla Minus One had a budget of I think 12 Million and won Best Visual Effects should make it clear to Hollywood why hyper-inflated budgets for cgi are failing the movies they're a part of.
I feel like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 got snubbed for at least a nomination in both Best Production Design and Best Hair & Makeup. It literally broke the world record for the most makeup and prosthetics in a movie and had a ton of amazing practical sets instead of jusf being shot on a green screen like a lot of other MCU movies.
WHAT!? A TWO YEAR STREAK!? IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!
It really did feel like the universe saw his video, decided “fuck you” and made the Oscars good now in return
Is that a pun because of John Cena? 😄
@@stephendayrit4483 No, just a Riddler Joke cause I've been addicted to a certain Batman game for about a month and haven't been able to stop myself from playing it...
woah... I recognize you!
it is so fun hearing how excited you are about things like this
John Mulaney hosting next year would be great, but knowing the oscars, they'll probably get Jo Koy instead.
Michael Keaton’s sudden transition into Batman was truly the highlight for me.
Can we bring up how Ryan Gosling’s Marilyn Monroe homage in the “I’m Just Ken” number felt genuinely rewarding to some of us Marilyn fans (me included)? Especially after the fact that a day early before the Oscars, the estate (and a technology company) announced that they were making some stupid ass AI chatbot of her.
Ryan’s performance? THAT was a homage, and I really hope it can be an introduction to some of Marilyn’s work for the new generation.
Love the videos, man. Keep it up!!!
Major respect for highlighting the speech for Zone of Interest
Hugh Jackman should host the Oscars again.
that was what first got me into the Oscars, before I fell out of love with them.
Hugh Jackman, Neil Patrick Harris, Ariana DeBose, like for the love of god, please get Broadway stars to host these award shows!
And apparently I read an interview somewhere that Hugh is interested in hosting the Oscars as long as he's not busy filming movies, so there's that 🤷
@@SpookySkellyGurl What happened?
@@scipioafricanus5871 oh, I meant before I stopped watching the Oscars, sorry. As far as I know Hugh Jackman is still good
@WreckIt966 I need there to be a timeline where NPH hosts the Oscars as many times as he’s hosted the Tony’s
John Mulaney would make an EXCELLENT host!
Yes! Spider Ham and Jack Horner himself!
I'd like to see John Mulaney or Ariana DeBose (see her Tony Awards hosting gig, that's already enough for her in contention to host the Oscars) to host the Oscars someday, that'll
@@RonanBunny I really did overpack
Mulaney is super funny
As someone who's never laughed at a Mulaney joke, I can confirm he's still funnier than Jimmy Kimmel.
It is important to me that you know I couldn’t remember your channel name, so I searched moana crab CZcamsr and you were a top result
Arnold and Danny Calling out Michael Keaton as Batman in the crowd was EASILY my favourite part of this Oscar’s
The boy and the heron winning over across the spiderverse honestly had me shocked but also not at the same time because honestly i could've seen it go both ways
People will gonna remember boy and the heron vs Across the spider verse as the no country for old men vs there will be blood situation. They were both incredible films that people complain for the one they won and say the other was more deserving but ultimately all the movies i said are great on their own way
I was honestly hoping that Lily Gladstone would win Best Actress, and even Emma Stone seemed surprised that she won. Though Lily helped spread awareness of the Osage people, and hopefully she'll eventually be nominated again. They both gave powerful performances this year.
How are you everywhere
She won our hearts for the Native community. 💙
@@forbiddensnack2917its the only real thing that i got from this, i may have gotten unreasonably angry when she didnt win, or anything Killers didnt
I wanna take a moment to appreciate the underdog for the Animated Feature Oscar. Robot Dreams is such a wonderful movie full of heart. It was one of those once in a lifetime movies that you need to take the rest of the day to think about. It was such a pleasant surprise to hear it was Oscar nominated & I encourage everybody in the US to go watch it once it releases over there!!!
Just glad robert cillian and Chris nolan finally got the recognition they deserved and that godzilla won for special affects
“Spinning Globe” from The Boy and the Heron should have been nominated for Best Original Song and the score should have been nominated too.
I really agree with this so much.
My top 3 favorite movie songs of 2023: 1. “What Was I Made For?” 2. “Spinning Globe”. 3. “Am I Dreaming?” I thought the last two should’ve been at least worthy contending nominees. I personally put “I’m Just Ken” as an Honorable Mention.
Joe Hisaishi seriously deserves a win for Best Score one of these days. But that would mean the academy would have to acknowledge that animated films are worth nominating for other categories
I agree so much.
That song and am I Dreaming should’ve been nominated over the stupid Hot Cheeto song!
Stunts category 100% deserves to be a thing
I’ll be having to wait a century for voice acting to be finally recognised.
Much like the Pandora's box Godzilla Minus One opened, having a stunts category would just be rewarding the most dangerous stunts (like how Sound and Editing just go to the movie with the most Editing and the loudest movie). It would put the stunt workers in more dangerous situations which would inevitably lead to people dying, just so they can get an Oscar.
As much as I like this idea, it's literally a safety hazard.
@@thecinematicmind this I also hugely want too
I am somewhat disappointed you didn't talk about 20 days in Mariupol. I guess I should be more disappointed in people cutting it from the recording
It would have been great if Al Pacino had opened his envelope and said, "Emma Stone, La La Land!"
2022 oscars were so bad schaffrillas is now constantly keeping a close eye on them💀
I say the animation category was the hardest one, as The Boy and Heron and Across The Spider-Verse were in the running for it, and we all know they are next level!
I really recommend Robot Dreams so much.
I know that it probably wouldn’t have won, but Nimona means so much to me personally that I was really hoping that it would win
@@one-onessadhalf3393 I'd say that Nimona would be 3rd because it was really good!
The greatest Schafrillas arc is his change of view in Better Call Saul
I hope next brings back the "animated characters present Best Animated Short FIlm" tradition, it was always pretty charming
