      You can try the roast thing and succeed... God knows I'm not a Ricky Gervais guy, (his brand of comedy can become broey and insufferable under the guise of subversiveness if not balanced right), but he used to do it right with the Globes, with the right amount of timely contemporary jokes and some of the more timeless variety as well... Mulaney has the right approach here because these are lifetime achievements awards, so you know who the honorees are, there's no suspense and they have earned it and you have to, well, honor them... But Oscars, GG, any competition-based awards ceremony, is necessarily about hopes and expectations and thus, vanity and disappointment and image, so you can afford to be in roast mode to punish that, there is a sort of privilege of the court's fool that has to be displayed somehow... That roasting job can be done more or less savagely depending on the host, and I agree that it needs to be balanced out by some self-deprecation (the best usually are) but it is by nature relevant to the occasion...

    • @cv8499
      @cv8499 Před 4 měsíci +31

      @@swap9649 The thing is, Ricky Gervais bashes Hollywood as if he's not a part of it. He wants to act like he's sooo above it. Meanwhile he's also been in movies and had TV shows and released Netflix specials. He was pissed when the American Office did better than the British version. He wanted that acclaim for himself. But when he does these awards shows, he acts like he's some ragtag revolutionary or something. Give me a break. Yes, awards shows can seem frivolous and self-congratulatory. But they also honor artists who have done exceptional work that year, and being an artist himself, he should know that it is, in fact, work.

    I must admit that I’ve never heard of this guy before but now I really hope he gets to host the Oscars. This is what the show needs, a classy, funny, guy who actually makes jokes about films. No need to insult anybody. Just smart comedy. It is so sad this ceremony isn’t televised. Bring the Honorarys back to the main show and this host with them!!

      He’s a fascinating dude. He’s a former Saturday night live writer and he left and he did very well for himself as a standup.but he had a drinking and drug problem. It seems like he might have overcome it, but it came back real bad right around Covid. A bunch of his SNL buddies made him go to rehab. Around that same time on Twitter he announced he was leaving his wife……to her surprise. After he got out of rehab he knocked up and married Olivia Munn. They seem to be Doing well but the dude went through crazy roller coaster the last couple of years. His latest special he talks about it. His Specials are on Netflix and CZcams.

      “We shot this whole flashback … in Atlanta, and we shot it first, when we’re all together in our college days,” Goldblum said. “We’re all making a Thanksgiving dinner. Kevin Costner’s character was in the kitchen with a sharp object - that finally he did himself in with - about to cut the turkey. And he was going to cut this perfect turkey. It was poetical, and metaphorical. He’s about to cut this perfect turkey, and we were all there kind of having a good time, and I think Glenn Close’s character says, ‘Hey Alex. We need you in here.’ And he’s there, and he can’t bring himself to cut the turkey. It’s whole, and it’s kind of perfect. And he doesn’t want to do it.”
      As Goldblum suggested, it was a clever bit of reverse foreshadowing, as well as multidimensional character-building when it came to Alex, who ultimately we’re only told about by his friends.
      “Then we saw the movie, and for one reason or another, they decided not to use it,” Goldblum said. “But [Costner] was wonderful.”
