    I love how Nolan isn’t tied down to a specific genre or style. He can spend two decades making some of the best action sequences in cinematic history and then suddenly make a movie comprised almost entirely of people talking in rooms just because he feels like it.

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 Před 4 dny +8

      Well, he does have an identifiable style. He loves realism and non-linear storytelling. And there are many genres he has yet to dive into. I think the most versatile popular director is Steven Spielberg: Duel, Jaws, Close Encounters, Indiana Jones, ET, The Color Purple, Hook, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report, etc...

    The thing about The Prestige is that the first watch will blow you away when you learn the twist, but the second watch will blow you away *because* you know the twist. There's so much packed into that film that you find something new every time you watch it, but for the first watch you don't actually need to pick up on any of it to enjoy the story and that's the craziest part to me.

    Ok so the reason The Dark Knight Rises feels so underwhelming is because originally Joker was going to have a massive role in it. Obviously after Heath Ledger’s death that plan was scrapped. Nolan had pretty much no passion for making a third film but was forced by the studio

    • @ReichLife
      @ReichLife Před 9 dny +19

      Is there any meaningful proof of such claims? Information of the time was that there was no third movie seriously planned, and ending of Dark Knight rather reinforces that when compared with B.Begins with obvious Joker cliffhanger.

    • @CouchSpud91
      @CouchSpud91 Před 7 dny +9

      @@ReichLife Yeah, it was my understanding WB kinda strong-armed Nolan into making Rises via his contract and so he kinda rushed Rises out hence it not being up to snuff with his other works. Tenet has no such excuse.

    • @ReichLife
      @ReichLife Před 7 dny +3

      @@CouchSpud91 Same feeling here. While Ledger death more or less impacted Nolan's approach towards third movie, overall picture showcases there never actual desire to make one, with only contract and/or promises for funding of other projects which were to follow TDKR actually made Nolan direct third movie. And yeah, while I consider Nolan to be easily one of the best directors of our times, he is hardly perfect. Didn't even bother with Tenet since it didn't sound appealing to me, all while Dunkirk or Oppenheimer while great movies, painfully suffer from Nolan's stubborn obsession of avoiding CGI.

    About the Inception ending, it turns out that in an interview a while back, Michael Caine stated that during the production, Nolan told him that any scene his character is in is in reality and not a dream. And since Caine’s character is there at the very end bringing Cobb to his kids, the ending was in fact a reality.

    All valid film criticism aside, the bomb in the dark knight rises would not cause a deadly amount of radiation to the city for two big reasons,
    1- it’s said to be a 1megaton nuke and anything over 700 kilotons blasts most of the radiation into the upper atmosphere
    2-It’s a fusion based bomb which hypothetically would have less than percent of the radiation caused by a fisson bomb aka every nuclear bomb in real life

    The movie playing in reverse order does such a good job at putting us in Leonard's shoes and helps us understand his short term memory loss. We're forced to experience his condition every time a new scene begins, because we have no idea what happened just happened before.

I wasn't able to get the full cinema experience, but I did have a cheap 5.1 surround system and the audio on that disc blew me away. I could put my hand in front of one of the rear speakers and that thing felt like an air conditioner with how much sound it had pumping through it. My dad came home from work while I was watching it, and came up to my room to see what all the noise was. He ended up getting so engrossed in the movie that he just stood there in the doorway and watched the last 45 mins or so with me, without having seen the rest of it. It's truly a great film and I gotta give it another watch soon.

    After watching all of his films multiple times, I ironically found Tenet to be my favorite. And I think many other channels are starting to give it the recognition it deserves. It grew on me. Much like 2001, Nolan removes grounding comforts of things like character background and the necessity to instantly connect with the audience - to make a masterpiece. It truly is the most Nolany of all his films. It just feels like the art he wanted to make regardless of what others thought.

    If you want a suggestion on which director to do next, I think Martin Scorsese would be appropriate
    Killers of the Flower Moon came out last year just like Oppenheimer, Marty has been on people’s minds thanks to his Internet content on TikTok and Letterboxd and (most importantly) HE’S PUFF DADDY!!!!

      Honestly, either Martin Scorsese or Robert Zemeckis would be excellent choices. I’d love to see him rank both.
      Others that would be great to do are David Fincher, Denis Villenueve, Tim Burton, and Quentin Tarantino (though I’d wait until his final film comes out).
      He mentioned M. Night Shyamalan, but that’s… not a good idea honestly.

    Bane is a hired gun, basically does the same thing in the movie except stick around for the nuke since he doesn’t have a death wish. Batman picks up on this with his mannerisms, his words, as well as subtle things like having the intelligence to pull it of but not the information or motivation to do so. He figures out it’s Talia before her plan works, having Catwoman steal the key or something. There’s a twist villain as well as a subversion of it, connecting the first movie with Ras comments about family and how a older Batman is smarter and stronger. He subdues Bane before he can get away, and basically can clown on Talia by laying out her entire plan out to her and at the end tells her she’s already lost. Why would he relieve the entire plan if it wasn’t already stopped?

    My ranking (I haven't seen Following)
    1. Memento (10/10) Christopher Nolan's masterpiece, one of the cleverest movies you'll ever watch.
    2. The Dark Knight (10/10) An all-time modern classic and the second-best superhero movie ever made (after The Incredibles, obviously).
    3. Inception (9/10) A stunning, monolithic achievement of blockbuster filmmaking with a compelling story to boot. Aside from a little too much exposition, a whole-hearted success.
    4. Dunkirk (9/10) Cinema in its purest form, this is a visceral and masterful technical tour-de-force, though some won't gel with its lack of character development.
    5. Oppenheimer (8.5/10) An explosive and masterful historical epic, although the Florence Pugh subplot is pretty terrible.
    6. The Dark Knight Rises (8/10) Plot holes and all this is a gripping example of superhero films at their most bad-ass and thoughtful.
    7. Batman Begins (7.5/10) This origin story does its job very well indeed, although it's a glum watch and it can be dull.
    8. Interstellar (7/10) A technical masterpiece that starts out flawlessly before losing focus in the second half. The entire Matt Damon subplot should've been cut.
    9. The Prestige (6.5/10) Held back by excessively unlikable characters, The Prestige is an uneven film that eventually arrives at a flawless third act.
    10. Insomnia (6/10) A mediocre and soullessly grim detective thriller, though too well-acted and well-made to be called bad.
    11. Tenet (4.5/10) One of the worst-written Hollywood films in recent memory, this is Christopher Nolan's biggest failure as a director.

    I saw Interstellar in theaters recently during a rerelease near me. Interstellar was already a movie I loved and had rewatched a few times, but seeing it in theaters completely changed the experience. The sound design immersed me like I couldn't imagine and I would honestly say that it was the biggest takeaway from a movie theater experience. If you ever have the chance to see this movie in theaters or at least on a big screen with quality surround sound, you need to.

Every single time i watch it again i just get sooo blown away, its incredible. The best part is watching it with new people who havent seen it before, and talking about it afterwards. It says a lot about Heath Ledger’s performance of the worst part about it is what future Batman projects took away from it, rather than anything it actually did.
    What made it so great is that it chose to be different from the typical portrayal in previous media and it really felt a distinct, rather than most things that came after where they were just trying to emulate Heath Ledger.
