Aang/Katara/Tenzin's family is pretty great. Aang may have given Tenzin an unfair amount of attention, but it is justified as Tenzin was the only naturally-born airbender in over a hundred years. Tenzin is raising a fine family other than the hiccup where Ikki ran away for a day.
I can't say the same thing about Sokka (who may or may not be Suyin's father) or Toph's family for that matter.

admittedly it's kind of cool reading the ATLA comics (which take place after the conclusion of the show) and seeing the seeds being planted for aang's shift in characterization. it's still BS in Korra but in the comics you can see the ideas being discussed, like taking someone's bending away as a harsh and permanent punishment. it surreptitiously adds some credence to the shift in characterization.

To be fair, Aang’s entire life is just caring burden way too much for one man to carry. He was meant to save the entire world of a 100-year war at just the age of 12. And after he finally had a child who can airbend, the burden of restoring an entire nation (a nation that was once about 25% of the world) fell on him and him alone. I think Aang did what he had to do because he was literally the only one who can do it

We don’t see much of Adult Aang in Korra at all and I never got the impression he was “overly serious” or “cold” from the short scenes we do see from him, he definitely has matured and is more serious but everytime we see him he still acts kind and compassionate to Korra and Tenzin and I like it. Also Adult Aang is still shown to be goofy sometimes like that picture we see in book 4.
If you’re talking about his characterisation of being a bad father maybe I understand a little more. I think it makes sense why Aang would spend so much time with Tenzin and why he would of been so excited when Tenzin could air bend because for most of his life he was the only air bender which just of been terrible for him so if he was tough on Tenzin and made him learn a lot I think that’s understandable and in character. But him neglecting his other kids doesn’t seem completely right. I feel like Aang still would of included them and make time for them so that was one thing I disliked about Adult Aang

Bolin in an essence could be summed up as the stupid, dumb character. And yes they gave him the ability to Lavabend which was pretty op but that wasn't in any ways a alternative to character development and improvement, they almost felt sorry for him and decided he was the weak link so they might as well give him a easy way out of working hard at genuinely becoming good at something.

There is a theory that the handful of people that become airbenders due to the spirit shenanigans in season 3 is due to them having been descendants of surviving air nomads. It really wouldn’t make sense that the entire culture of NOMADS would all be at their temples at the same time to all be wiped out by the fire nation, so it’s likely some survived and laid low in the Earth Kingdom, which is the place they find all these new airbenders. I think that makes a lot more sense than them just randomly having the powers from naught, one example of this kinda being at play is Bumi.

Honestly, I feel like bending should be more a cultural/spiritual thing than a genetic thing.
Those most in tune with the elements are able to bend them.
Kotara actually acts a mini avatar within the water element. She’s a bit of a prodigy like Ang. She units the two sides of water bending (healing and fighting) she embodies both the stormy seas and life giving spring.
Zuko does the same thing. Fire lord is all destruction. He looks down on the warmth and support fire can also give.
Zuko embodies the brashness and aggressiveness of fire. But he also learns the lessons of restraint that turns the destructive forest fire into a welcoming hearth.
Zuko fails at fire bending because his example is out of balance. When he learns from Iroh, he’s able to best capable fighters. He’s the complete element of fire.
I don’t have good examples for tof but I’m sure they’re there. It’s Taoism ying/yang with the avatar being the thing that connects everything.

I always thought Mako should have more of a serious backstory. I mean, think about it. On the surface, he's a character who had ties with city gangs and tried to keep his brother out of the gang only to become a cop later himself and be accused of being a dirty cop! That sounds interesting, yet somehow it manages to be completely boring. Because he never did anything wrong; he was only a bookkeeper, so he didn't need redemption anyway. Despite his background, he immediately accepts Asami trying to make him over and hand everything to him. And when he winds up in prison, the brother he helped raise just basically ignores him and goes off to start an acting career. STUPID!

they were half-baked characters, and the entire dynamic of team korra is cringe-y and forced teen romance. there is hardly any meaningful connection between korra / mako, korra / bolin, and korra / asami. compare that to team aang, even toph has a better relationship with zuko, and their friendship is the LEAST developed.

at best, tlok is mid. at worst, it betrays atla.
the spirit world was completely retconned. the original benders have been retconned as well (it atla, it's the sky bisons, dragons, badger moles and the moon and ocean). they even managed to destroy the characterization of the owl in the library. suddenly, he's a moron who has very human-like motives and behavior.
while the red lotus faction was actually done right, OMG, that evil kite completely destroyed the essence of the avatar cycle itself. i guess bryke just conveniently stopped drawing inspiration from hinduism, taoism, and classical east asian philosophy when it came to the very heart of the avatar cycle. it became this boring, one-dimensional good vs. evil trope embodied by the corniest depiction i've ever seen -- a friggin kite.
team korra is the most forced group dynamic you can find in popular fantasy media. the attempt to copypasta the magic of team aang is just silly.
honestly, the show should not have done anything new with the spirit world. the red lotus should have been the main baddie of the entire show, with the equalists as a warm-up to that. the whole spirit portal nonsense just destroyed the very delicately balanced lore of atla.

I could actually get behind the first season, it was pretty good (ended a bit abruptly but still good) and then after season 2 it's like "oh yeah, Kora is now basically the first avatar and all the other ones don't count because the connection was severed." That to a character that all the good guys love (Bo Lin apologies to her after she kissed Mako in season 1 which seemed out of place) and who gets things resolved pretty quickly I can see why people called her a Mary Sue. But that doesn't ruin the show. It's no masterpiece or even anything to wright home about, but it's fine. The only way to enjoy it is to have never watched the original though.

For me, honestly the main issue is really simple - in season 1 and 2 they got too bogged down in the relationships and love triangles. You have these villains with fantastic potential that ends up squandered (MUCH more with Unalaq than Amon, but still) because there's more time devoted to relationship stuff than building up the characters as individuals.
Also, I agree with you about Korrsami. I knew they were gonna get together, but from what I remember they have one conversation together just the two of them before the finale, for the ENTIRETY of season 4. I get that they couldn't show the romance, sure, but it felt like their intimate close friendship was something we were told about rather than shown, and so it felt like Korrsami kinda came out of nowhere. I just wish we'd had a couple more moments with the two of them alone together - not even as a couple, but just as friends. Show, don't tell, after all.

That’s actually something that squashed Korras potential. The fact the went for everyone being older meant relationships would come into it more, but they put so much romance that meant nothing and it wasted time. Aang and Katara were the single relationship, other than Sokka’s ridiculous side story romances. There was just too much, but it was still a good show.

    • @en4833
      @en4833 Před rokem +16

Ridiculous? He had two serious romances, one girl who had a crush on him, one girl who might have had a crush on him, and the Haiku scene. The two serious ones were very well thought out and meaningful, Ty Lee was mostly played for jokes, Toph only had like three scenes where she showed she might like Sokka, and the Haiku scene was maybe 5 minutes of one episode. None of them were ridiculous.

    • @solidzack
      @solidzack Před 6 měsíci +2

I have to agree on that one. Every teen flirted with everyone and started a relationship on first sight, that often ended just as fast. Bolin for instance tried to hit on Korra, then Eska, then Ginger and then Opal, and all pretty much as soon as he met them. Mako swapped from Asami to Korra then back to Asami then (involuntarily) back to Korra before breaking up for good. Jinora immediately fell in love with Kai and they became a couple as well (she's 11 in season 3). Even Meelo (at age 9) wanted to impress "his love of his life" after bumping into a girl he's never seen before. And of course you need to have Korra ending up with Asami, because it's 2023 and you gotta have representation and stuff.
Most romantic relationships could've been cut out completely (or kept at friendships/romantic interests) and nothing would've changed at all, and at times the show would've even improved (especially the awkward love triangle involving Mako).
The last Airbender on the other hand was different. Sure, Aang fell in love immediately upon seeing Katara, who also got flustered by him frequently, yet while Aangs romantic interest in her was addressed often, the show waited right until the ending for the romantic conclusion and just kept it at "close friends with romantic interest" for the time being.
Sokka on the other hand had two relationships going on and the first started just as rushed as all the other ones in TLOK, but it ended in a tragic way instead of a breakup. His second one was actually more in depth, as he got to know the character beforehand and we see him still scarred and scared of losing his loved ones when she confesses to him, to the point of denying the first kiss. It really added some mayor character development to the otherwise comical relief character.
Zuko got together with his childhood friend, which was actually important, because it both portrayed that even after getting everything he wanted he felt horrible about his life and by betraying the fire nation he'd have to abandon her as well, but she also ends up betraying Azula because her love to Zuko is stronger than her loyalty to Azula.
Apart from that true show doesn't focus on romantic relationships (let's not forget that this is a nickelodeon show with kids as a target group) and the few ones in the show are actually used properly for character building. The characters complexity goes far beyond just the romantic feelings for each other.

I actually did watch/rewatch both this and Avatar recently (there's this whole thing that I didn't finish either season as a kid cause they just stopped airing at their usual times or something). I had heard that Korra was bad, but I think going into it expecting that made me not end up disliking it. I think I was even told "Season 2 sucks, the rest is pretty good" so I didn't even hate season 2 because of my low expectations of it. I definitely think Korra's better watched casually, just don't over think it, enjoy the great animation.
I want to point out one big difference I realized Avatar and Korra have that I think made Avatar better. Avatar had a much better sense of direction. Probably from the very first episode you know that the Fire Lord is the villain and the show will end when Aang confronts him. Korra doesn't have that, each season deals with a new major villain solely for that season. There's also the problem of the team thinking they were making Korra as a miniseries rather than a multi-season show, because more often a story that the writer knew how they would end it from the beginning turns out much better than ones where they don't. Knowing the story's beginning, middle, and end means you only have to fill in how the characters reach these major points.

They don’t feel like a new team avatar because there isn’t enough time for them to develop as a team and maintain the pacing of the plot (which is more or less due to Nickelodeon screwing with the series WAYY too much). You could say the same thing for season two and later season four as well. Both had some great ideas, but the build-up either was nonexistent and felt jagged, or they had to rush the buildup and threat of the season to make the story work. Basically, these seasons needed more episodes than they were allotted

Here’s the problems with the series:
    - Having it become a hugely more technological and modern world, to the point where not only does it make the avatar and bending look stupid but also makes things such as Zukos dragon not seem possible anymore since there seems to be no room left for magic and fantasy.
-Making the world more american like by removing all the asian features and customs, heck the clothes seem to have become britsh victorian gentleman and ladies style instead of the beautiful and varied clothing of the last airbender series.
-Removing all the spiritual stuff including philosophical points such as having to learn to give up things in order to grow or how one must ask themselves what they want.
-Staying in Republic city, this makes it very boring since we don’t get to see much beyond the city, and it makes it feel less interesting then when the original gang was travelling across the world.
-Disrespecting Sokka by not having a single appearance by him, adress on what happened to him, no old characters mentioning him, no thing such as maybe seeing his sword in a museum.
    - No appearance or mention of Suki or Ty Lee as well as other characters.
-Getting rid of connection to past lifes.
-Overexplaining the avatar and bending thereby killing the magic and making earlier moments seem stupid.
-The gang has pretty much zero real chemistry, the original gang seems real and they bond by shared experiences etc, this gang is either split up or just kinda awkward, they barely work together.
-Korra never grows or changes, she makes the same mistakes over and over, including trusting random people too much, she never really acknowledges her flaws.
-The point of view of non benders is entirely skipped as much as possible, we never get to see them laying out their issues such as maybe having some earth kingdom farmers who have their land stolen by neighbours because they can bend the ground to make a new wall to steal land or showing people using bending to bully and intimidate, thereby making Korra have to realise that she can’t merely call herself the avatar and punch her way through problems.
-Season 2’s love triangle making it even worse.
-Bolin being a direct rip off of Sokka.
-Korra and Asami having zero real interaction or chemistry.

    • @bigj1905
      @bigj1905 Před rokem +7

I definitely agree with some of your points, but I think you are being a little unfair with others:
It’s true they never captured the original chemistry of the OG Gang, but everyone in this gang are all adults who have lives outside of helping each other, so it makes sense why they seemed more disconnected (the three year time skip didn’t help either)
I didn’t mind the industry and technology aspect. I think they definitely could have made a plot about the world changing so rapidly, but I don’t think it took anything away. Technology and Magic/Fantasy/Spirtualism don’t have to take away from each other. Heck, in my opinion it makes Zuko’s dragon look even cooler.
The whole idea of non-benders viewpoint doesn’t really bother me. I don’t think it’s fair to criticize the show considering they had a whole season dedicated to non-benders. Plus, Varrik, Zhu Lee, Raiko, and Asami were all non-benders who played important roles.
Korra definitely does change. Season 4 Korra is way more responsible and level headed then Season 1 Korra.
      But I agree that:
They never really traveled or explored the world, which is a shame, because the world building is part of what made the show so cool.
Sokka and much of the OG cast was either ignored or given minimal roles.
The Love Triangle(s) did nothing but take away from the plot.
The focus was taken away from Korra to often, which made it harder for her to grow in a way the audience could connect to.

I loved the parts in atla where they would get more cartoony when they got extra emotional but that was a very rare thing in tlok. I think in the entire First season it happened twice a moment of two apart!
Tlok also really went back on the humor and that was my favorite part!
