So, this one is a little different than my video on Avatar: The Last Airbender. It was a little harder for me to just focus on one element of the show, so I focused more on the series as a whole and the various elements I liked or didn't like. I also mention at the end of this video that I am going to work on a video that is essentially what my rewrite of Book 2 would look like, so if that interests you, let me know. I am going to make it no matter what, but if there is enough interest in me doing it, I will make it sooner.

even then season 1 had its mess of problems with destroying bloodbending as we know it destroying how special other people were for lightning bending, metal bending, and other such things and instead of making it into a mundane system that works for everyday use.

I quite liked LoK despite its flaws, it was still very enjoyable especially in books 3 and 4 but cutting off the other Avatars like that really hurt in a bad way
And people prefer say that is garbage, when is a good show, especially if we avoid book 2 and only saw the 2 episode about wan of that season. book 3 I considered one of the best by all the height and meaning that has on it, book 4 for how much korra grew up and book 1 for the equallist
Wow you summarized my exact feelings really well. Still a great show, especially Seasons 3 and 4, really the biggest thing that sucks about it is how it screws with the avatar line, and S2 in general

General Chorus yeah exactly like the best part of S1 in my opinion were the flashbacks of Aang, Sokka, toph, etc and was hoping for that throughout the show but they literally just screwed up one of the main key elements of being the avatar. Plus it would’ve been nice if we got yet another later avatar show for them to look back at Aang AND Korra and the other old ones

Really pissed to hear Nickelodeon dicked them around on whether they would get more seasons or not, because that was what hurt the show the most IMO.

Best moment ever was when Ty Lee first chi blocked Katara and asked how she would fight without her bending, and Sokka yeeted a boomerang at her and said "I seem to manage."
Sokka is the best character ever and I will fucking fight anyone who disagrees.

Aang always had his friends helping him overcome his sadness and dissapointments, while Korra had to deal with shit all by herself most of the time. It's a really rough story.
That is why Mako, Bolin and Asami could be written out of the story with next to no consequence

NG aang did too. He ran away so many times and thought he needed to do it all on his own. But they never left his side. Even when Aang disappointed them when he didn’t told them about Hakodas letter to his children, they still believed in Aang and came back to him. They knew together they are stronger. Their friendship bond was so strong. The new Avatar Team is no comparison which us really sad to see.
The episode where Korra was recovering from that poison crushed me, it was raw and beautiful and heartbreaking.

I completely agree. In real life, people go through physical or emotional traumas that take years of struggle to recover from. Seeing a cartoon character confront a harsh reality like that was really powerful and comforting.

I don't agree with this mentality. While yes, acknowledging strengths is important, Korra is not an independent series; it's a sequel, and fans have every right to expect the same level of nuance and meticulous writing that the original had.
What pisses so many people, myself included, off, is how corners were obviously and conspicuously cut. If we were to roll over and accept this, we enable the creation of more such content. Things they got perfectly right literally in the last series they worked on now going wrong is an inexcusable regression.

A kyoshi warrior movie 💜 I would watch that. The characters are all so rich, avatar changed my life. Heart centered and spiritually balanced. So much compassion. The Kyoshi warriors would make a great spin off

I keep wanting to see shows about previous avatars and stuff like that
I like Korra. Being an adult is difficult, you suddenly have responsibility for yourself and learn the world is full of indifference. No one is gonna deal with your baggage for you, and you have to process things on your own so you can grow. You don’t spend 24/7 with your friends. You don’t see your family as often as you’d like. You find that life isn’t black and white, and it’s mostly varying shades of grey. You often have to deal with things you don’t want to, and sometimes come across people who make you feel like you don’t matter. And love is complicated. Ultimately you learn life is what you make it, and enjoy those fleeting moments of joy when they come. Overall the only development I didn’t like was losing connection to past lives. But I think this can easily be remedied in a sequel where the new avatar goes on a spirit quest to reconnect. Would be cool to see more previous avatars anyway. Energy never goes away, it just changes. I’d like to think Aang’s spirit is still around, maybe just lost.

I’m 3 years late but I just want to say that this was such a perfect encapsulation of Korra’s show and what I find to be the most charming aspect of it! It can be such a raw reflection of what real life and becoming an adult (or in Korra’s case, the Avatar) can be like. As someone who is in the midst of their 20’s and struggling with the things you mentioned above sometimes for the first time, I think I find comfort in the idea that Korra not only struggles with these things too, but rarely ever runs away from them and does her best to stay the course (obvi barring when she went back home for 3 years, but that was a necessary break).
I love the LoK but the criticism is fair. I wish each season had 24 episodes, they could have focused on story and character development.

Me: Wow, this is so deep. Korra who was born with the power of both fire,water and earth bending and barely took Tenzin's teaching to heart loses her powers. Can Korra overcome her weakness of only having the element to bend air, can she still be the underdog? Holy shit I'm really interested now.

Also, if Rava was the source of her avatar power, why is it even possible for her to lose her bending in the first place? Isn't that the ultimate plot armor in the avatar universe?

That stuff is mostly due to that only 1 season being planned. If they had knew it would continue, I'm sure they would have explored that more. It's also the main reason each season is more disconnected

That’s actually a good way to describe the show. Beautiful in its ideas, art, and acting but messy in execution. A beautiful mess. And to be honest, that has a lot to do with how Nick treated the writers. They gave the writers 12 episodes and then when Nick realized people actually like Avatar they demanded 14 more episodes from the creators to be pumped out quickly and gave NO TIME for the creators to do what they do best and create awesome extensive narratives. Instead everything feels rush and smooshed together.
Yes! That’s why I’m glad Netflix will be taking over authority for the live action.

It also didn't help that some of the writing was just in general terrible. I feel like if the same people wrote it unrushed, it would still be a hot mess, because the core of the issue in the show is Korra as a character. She's terribly written

The original show was a masterpiece, there was no way any sequel could live up to it. It should have just ended there

And to clarify, as soon as more writers came in the mix, it was bound to be bad. If it was just the original trio it probably would have done fine, but no, the addition of quantity over quality was prioritized. The more "committee" type writing incorporated, the worse a story is. And that was basically the entirety of The Legend of Korra; all committee writing past season 1

we should not forget that Korra started off older than Aang, so there is no wonder she wanted to find herself and to do everything by herself, she was a teenager with a great power that noone appreciated - that feels very true.
Honestly LOK is a great story of a natural avatar finding herself as a human, it may have been poorly depicted and contradicted a lot of what it wanted to portray but the message is clear. It’s more modern in the sense that we as young people are constantly being pressured to find ourselves and are constantly being reminded of how much better the past was, Korra as a young adult goes through the same. While ATLA was about a young human looking to find himself as the avatar that he did not initially want to become. Have to appreciate the lessons learned from both now that I’m grown 🙏
This LOK emotional and moral parts of the story was on POINT, the actual story and plot was meh

I think part of the problem with Legend of Korra's pacing is that it only has 13 episodes per season, rather than the 20 odd episodes that each season of ATLA did. With that amount of time, they had time to breathe and interact, strengthening their bond not only between the characters, but we the audience also got to know the characters better as well. With Korra, there's always something to do, always a new plot point, which isn't a bad thing necessarily. ATLA isn't the only "right" way to tell a story,
I love Legend of Korra, for the most part, but I wish they had spent more time on the other characters, especially Bo Lin and Mako

Literally what I was saying, it’s nicks fault that they weren’t able to hv long seasons, for everything we’ve seen in LoK u can clearly see some parts hv been rushed because of the episode limit
Bryke did the best they could with what they were given but Nick was super shitty to them during the show’s entire creation. They had a fraction of the budget that atla did and had to treat every season like their last. They originally thought it was only going to be one season long and only got signed on for more when book one started airing. I wholeheartedly blame Nick for most of the shortcomings in LoK. The writers did their best with the shitty treatment they were given.

They completely destroyed established rules and lore that THEY THEMSELVES set up in ATLA. What is the point of making established rules in one season if you're going to completely change that shit and throw it in the trash in the next season? You cannot 100% excuse Bryke from this, especially when they did make shitty decisions, even with Nick down their necks 24/7.
I think the biggest struggle Korra suffered, as a production, was lack of planning. Legend of Korra was meant to be only one season long, which is why at the end of Book 1 all the loose ends seemed to have been tied up, even if a bit rushed. With the demand for a second season they had to start just making it up as they went, and that ultimately affected everything that followed.
The ending of book 1 seemed rushed because they had to change it around because they found out they were getting another book. Asami was originally supposed to be with Iroh and she would join the United Forces.
Asami was actually originally a villain, she was a spy working for the equalists working for her father, but the creators change their minds and made her part of team avatar instead. Which is probably why she didn't have much to do for the other seasons other then providing transportation and maybe fighting a random mook.

Luis Leonardo comment should be pinned. Season 1 was supposed to be stand-alone. Season 2 was requested afterward, again being stand-alone. Seasons 3 and 4 were written to be connected.
Korra flat out used up so many incredible plotlines in just one show. Each season's arc could have easily been expanded upon instead of isolating them for each season. It's just way too damn much.

My biggest gripe is that the 2 plot halves of S2 are fascinating explorations and expansions of already established world elements fro ATLA. But I don't really know if I think they mend well, and with some rewriting they could have been 2 riveting back-to-back stories
This show had a ton of missed potential. If only the writers used their fucking brains it would have been a whole lot better.

@Side 999 I can blame Nick for the hand off of Season 1 and 2. That was a waste of a plotline and a shame. However when Nickelodeon gave them three seasons and they chose to have three completely separate plot lines, each with over-the-top stakes, world-shattering consequences, larger than life revelations, and impossible resolutions... With very little crossplay between them (except for Zaheer's deus-ex machina for Korra in S4) - That was all on the writers... and consequence of their losing Aaron Ehasz. Who more and more seems to have been the heart of Avatar as a whole.
I personally believe this is the greatest indepth review and critical analysis of the show on CZcams. You didn't just scream "LeGEnd oF KorRa BAd" but you actually identified and pointed out things that make the show good and bad while also acknowledging, unlike alot of people, that a sequel will never be able to live up to its predecessors. I LOVED The Last Airbender and while I have some issues with Legend of Korra, it's not like I didn't have similar problems while watching The Last Airbender. Keep it up.

@@kianaclercin6995 well I mean its definitely much more complicated than that and that just shows Korra on a much better perspective, when in reality The actions and speeches of the president of republic city made so much more sense given the context, for one korra never learned how to become a fully balanced avatar like everyone else and pushed at everything from negotiating to spirituality (often resorting to violence ofc), and she definitely never learned to mature past the age of 10 because she never truly had to live with any consequences of her actions, I mean in the first episode she fought with the metal bender police force "because rules dont apply to the avatar" and as soon as she was being interrogated, tenzien has her released (again protecting a "strong independent female character"). the disconnect in the writing was most flawed when it came to their protagonist most of all. They literally sold themselves as being the mature team avatar yet the decisions and relationships handled in TLA gang were a lot more grown-up. This show was just sad tbh, if LOK was its own show and didn't borrow practically everything from the original and especially destroy it to make Korra look cool, maybe it would have faired better in reviews critically and normally.

Amanpreet gill wasn’t the avatar prior to Aang for the most part always like that when it came to authority and the world really didn’t give a damm about Korra. She also learned from her mistakes and became a lot less violent in the later seasons. Her being the way she is make a lot of sense too considering her upbringing.

I honestly think that if another tv company had made TLOK instead in Nick, then it could have gone down as one of the best shows of all time along with ATLA. Imagine what could have been if they had longer seasons, more money, a steady work environment, and no one limiting what they could put on screen. TLOK is great but if it fleshed out more characters and was properly made for an older audience then ATLA was, then it could be phenomenal.

That could end with either a possible masterpiece, or disaster. Given the state of writing in most series these days, I'd go with the latter.

After hating korra as a kid, I rewatched korra and it’s actually good, yeah it had moments where it was off but I actually loved it

true, beside amon ending being a bender every villain was amazing, Korra journey made sense and was very interesting, I actually dont really mind the season 2 world development with raja and the likes tho you can always make something better in hindsight. it's just so sad that the creators didnt get the full support from the get-go as they had with the avatar. such a shame has full support would have alleviated this show greatly

I'm not on board with this. I wish we could turn back in time and just leave avatar as it is, no crappy live action movie, no dissapointing legend of korra. And now, there's another avatar series coming and I don't think it will be great
But a post-Korra generational jump would put them in a contemporary and very modern world. I'm not sure how the significance of those bending skills would play out with all the current contrivances. Lots of weapons and tools that could be available would put most non-benders nearly on par of those with an average level of innate abilities. I suppose some artificial augmentation would help those with bending stay ahead, but that seems more like a gimmick than a main plot device.
Such may be interesting to see how it'd play out, dealing with the general loss of significance of the special abilities and Avatar Korra just seemingly walking out on the last generation. But I don't think the original writers would be willing to deal with that. (Korra's overall story ran out of steam too fast, and used too many Mary Sue or Deus Ex Machina type shortcuts. So I don't think they'd want to do that again.)
I still like Korra, but it has a lot of issues. My biggest issue is how Korra loses her connection with past avatars
Yeah. I mean
Avatar state equals the combination of all the past avatars wisdom and power. When she loses her connection with them, her avatar state becomes glowy eyed Korra instead of this awesome God mode. Plus avatar aang and all the other avatars are permanently gone. That would be sad if it didn't make me angry because Korra didn't deserve to yank on my heart strings.
What bugs me most about that is that it had no narrative purpose, it didn't make her grow in any new way of change the world in an interesting way.

I think it would have been acceptable if Korra was made to be a unique and exceptional avatar, and we actually got stories of subsequent avatars and how the diminished avatar state makes it more difficult for each of them to stay relevant in a changing world. It would be interesting to see each new avatar having to define what the avatar's role will be in their own time.

When I first watched Atla, I saw it when it was first on Netflix. I loved every second, but there was no anticipation to see what would happen next. It was all there. When Korra aired, I got to grow up with the series, and the characters. I felt more connected to the more mature themes/characters.
Korra is still a fantastic show. It's easily one of the best cartoons out there. It's biggest issue is that it must stand next to The Last Air Bender. How the fuck is anything supposed to live up to that?

Korra isn’t as perfect as ATLA, but it had some incredible moments that I’ll never forget just the same as ATLA. I’ll always love this show, when you said you could watch stories from the avatar world forever I couldn’t agree more. I get so excited every time a new comic is released, but I’d die for another animated series.

Boopy Schmoops My sister and I had been talking about something like this, and it would be fun if they did a "Tales from the Four Nations" type show formatted a little more like the Clone Wars series, having 2/3/4 episode arcs relatively disconnected from each other, and just let us explore the world through the experiences of several characters. You could flesh out past avatars more, follow up on some smaller characters from both series, maybe find out what happened to Sokka and Suki...
It's really a fantasy, but it would be fun nonetheless.
Hero Smith I would adore something like that! The franchise has so many interesting and endearing characters and locations it’d be a great fit for a bunch of short stories. If we ever got another animated series I’d love to see something like that rather than the story of the next avatar or something (not that I’d mind that either). It’s really a world I’d love to explore and see smaller stories in to flesh out the culture and history of everything.

Personally I think the shorter seasons hurt it a lot, along with each villain only getting 12-13 episodes. You just can't expand to the same extent as ATLA with the fire nation and Ozai, but they could have set up a very similar conflict with Kuvira or Unalaq that spanned multiple seasons or at least 22-23 episode seasons.
I loved LOK because of Korra. She is an incredible character that goes through so many lengths, hardships, and an incredible amount of growth. Her conflict between saving the world and endangering it is beautiful. I do wish that the other characters got the same treatment as Korra, but the show is about Korra, and I think she carries it. This is clearest in the best seasons: 3 & 4
This show aired when I was in high school and I loved it. Last airbender I saw on reruns I think but I love both, however i don’t like it when they’re compared to each other. I hate the fact that nick interfered a lot with Korra 😅

Season 1: an entire movement of people advocate for an anti bending cause and ridicule and terrorize the avatar just because she is the poster boy of bending.
Season 2: Korras own family member partners with the antithesis of the avatars spirit so that he can rid the world of her influence, and manipulates many people (including her cousins) into following this cause
Season 3: Korra is BLAMED for the events that happen in season 2 by republic city by both humans and spirits alike, rather than attempting to compromise. And on top of that a group of powerful anarchists attempt to capture and kill her because they believe the world is better off without her, this in turn traumatizes her and levels her temporarily paralyzed, and that is what it takes for her critics to finally give her a break.
Season 4: a dictator rises to power and tries to take the authority of Korra as the avatar away from her claiming she doesn't deserve it and it would be better off in her own hands.
The show goes out of its way to communicate that Korra gets all of the most horrible shit in the world, prejudice, ostracization, acts of terror and trauma, almost all of which she didn't deserve at all just because she is the avatar. The only thing in the show that communicates her being a spoiled privileged brat is how she acts, and everyone puts up with it because she is the avatar, which by the end of the show she learns to grow out of. I'm sorry but I do not understand what you are getting at here

Instead of creating new characters, I think it would be easier to fill in the blanks by making shows based on the established ideas already laid out for Kyoshi and Roku. That way, world-building and plot is easier. Regardless, I don't really care what we get because if it's about Avatar I WILL watch it.

i really liked korra’s team avatar because it seemed to reflect more young adult friendships. unlike aang’s gang, they arent school-age kids who travel the world and spend almost every second of everyday together. they are adults with responsibilities and jobs, but they still have time to support each other when they can and consider each other best friends.
I didn't like the Krew mainly because they felt useless there was nothing they could that Korra couldn't do better

The characters are mostly one dimensional
Korra isn’t a very likeable character
All the relationships between everyone is ‘dating/exes’ while TLA had more creative connections

Agreed. Personally, I feel like Mako and Bolin are just "sidekicks" to Korra. They don't outshine her or anything. They're just there when she needs some buddies. Aang's team are his friends. Katara and Toph at some point, became his teachers and Sokka is the leader of the group.

She blew him out a window which forced him to water bend in front of his followers, destroying his reputation and credibility. Korra also forced Kuvira to retreat into the forest to get her spirit cannon in the finale.

Im rewatching the show now and i think its alot more cleaner than we remember. But man the first half of season 2 is rough. I dont agree about the characters. They balance the characters pretty well by spreading out development throughout the seasons.

the NEW team avatars "friendship" actually kinda speaks to me... it accurately resembles what its like to grow up and be pushed away from your friends by work and responsibility. but still knowing you can be close despite the time spent apart...
I didn't vibe with them due to their personalities tbh... To me they seemed like the weakest characters within the whole show but still took a good chunk of the screen time away from the well written character with depth

They didn’t have a strong friendship since all of them were either cheating or going off with one another. It just messed up the whole thing because it was so unnecessary and stupid
H Hy This still is more realistic. Factoring that they were all problematic teenagers as well as factoring that unlike Aang and the previous team avatar, a more constrained and orderly world limited their time together and widened their avenues to mess up, was as real as it could get. I loved the old gang, but I always felt as though their bond was unattainable and painstaking seeing that the writers had enough liberty to hyper-focus on their relationship and have them cooped up in the sky all day on a bison. While fast-paced writing and constant activity made it more sloppy, the atmosphere of LoK presented a realer more modern bond.
I remember I was so confused when the first season villain died, and I actually expected him to miraculously survive because I thought he wouldn't die for another 3 seasons

Shrek is the best franchise and it tops anything. Well technically they could’ve picked this theme up in the second season. It almost felt like the whole “benders against non benders” thing vanished after season one which was really stupid. There was so much potential!
I really enjoyed LOK. While parts felt rushed and not well planned, other scenes were beautiful and touching. You explained the series incredibly well. Thank you for shedding light on the show's discrepancies but also its heart, energy, and charm.
I only found this video now but I cried while watching it. LOK was under a lot of pressure development wise because of Nickelodeon constantly fucking them up with funding, plot writing and schedule. I think it's a really good show and the fact that they managed to keep it entirely original from the ATLA makes it amazing. It doesn't deserve the hate it receives. Thank you for this amazing review

ATLA was filled girl power, and also talk about sexism. ATLOK was their time to shine, nick has something to do with it. I personally think Aaron Ehaz writing could improve the LOK like the way he did with ATLA. I think it's something to do with Ehaz and Dimartino's disagreements, if they work they could give us Azula's redemption and other missing part of the story.

This is a great review! I find that too many people bash the show in an obnoxious way. And in the same respect, some people also deny its flaws. After reading a lot of comments, I truly believe something: you should form your own opinion. If you love TLOK, then love it and don’t let others take that away from you. And if you hate it, that’s fine, just don’t attack others. I personally love the show and want to say to those who don’t, try it and give it a chance without looking at it too critically, it's very underrated.
I personally even think, that if they would’ve gotten more time with LOK it would be at least as good as ATLA. I love Korra and somehow the conversation around it makes me sad af. I think the conflict between LOK lovers and haters has to do with the fact how harsh the haters treat it. It’s like they are so offended that they got more avatar content and because it wasn’t the exact same as the original, they just had to hate it. As a 20 year-old, I can appreciate Korra’s darker themes, for a few ATLA episodes felt too childlike and boring to me whereas that isn’t a problem for me in LOK. Ahh how I wish people had been more open to Korra when it first started. Maybe we’d now have a truly fine series where the characters and plots are given more time to become something the show’s creators propably wanted for it to be. We can hope for a Korra sequel mini-series or something now that the Avatar Studios are here. I’d love to see it

I liked the idea of korra, i just didnt like how it was executed. It did look good! The fights, the animation was better, and the colour etc, but - it was for sure, the character development that felt like something was missing and bringing up the time limit made sense. And when it did end, i felt sad lol despite everyones objection, because it was over.
StarCaster I agree completely. It takes the third season for her to really struggle with somethings, being represented in the mercury still in her body.
This show reminds me of the phrase that sometimes, less is more. There's so much to explore, and they do explore them, but after watching LoK, I just can't seem to remember any of the emotional moments, or moments that were supposed to be powerful because of the lack of buildup. It felt like putting my finger in 20 different types of pie, and not even getting to taste them, just poke it and move on.
All I remember is Korra being a chaotic character and most of the other characters' names I don't even remember. LoK never induced a feeling of "I want to watch this again" because at times, I don't even know what I'm watching. Everything is so everywhere and nowhere at the same time.
I searched about what to like about LoK and I found this, and this honestly speaks volumes to me. It does give me the "I want to watch it" feels, but I still stand by that LoK had a message they wanted to convey, but there wasn't a clear story, which really dulled a lot of things. And honestly, I really do want to see them remake it, and build the show from scratch, and actually focus on the message that they want to convey, rather than make it cool-looking.
But all in all, I really loved this video. It's such a cool new perspective to take and I'm glad I found it :D
Some things definitely felt rushed, the side characters aren’t as fleshed out and the romances were kinda lame... but a few scenes/stories were truly amazing. Zaheer, The Red Lotus, Earthbenders as fascists, Asami, Korra’s trauma after the poison, Avatar Wan, the Beifong family conflicts, the return of the airbenders, old Toph, the waterbender civil war, the Spirit world integrating, VARRICK! ... I could go on. It’s a truly ambitious show and I think just existing as it is, it’s worth of praise.
The core difference between Korra and Aang is that Aang was wanted, needed and for the most part respected. But Korra was treated like dirt by nearly everyone. Aang never wanted to be the Avatar but he was supported and needed. Korra wanted to help the world but was constantly rebuffed and torn down. She didn’t let this stop her though. She persevered even after being nearly destroyed both physically and mentally.

Thank you for your explanation of the show, i really liked how you used both the negatives and positives to explain the value of the show. Personally, i loved Korra. I liked how the show didn't follow stereotypical "Hero's Journey" plotlines. For example, Korra and her friends beat the villain at the end of every season, but never in a way the audience would expect, especially in the 1st and 4th season. I also like how diverse Team Avatar is, especially when compared to The Last Airbender. For example, me and my siblings would try to match up the new Team Avatar with the old one. Pabu is Momo, Naga is Appa, Korra is Aang and so on. But we couldn't really do it. Mako, Bo Lin, Korra, Asami, and the animals are all different than the original Team, which i respect. The show has its hiccups such as lack of explanation to certain parts as you were saying, but i loved it overall. Personally, i didn't think it's strong and emotional moments were that weak, but that's just how i perceived them. Aang showing up at the end of season 1, Korra's breakdown about not being able to move in Season 4, and Hiroshi Sato dying all triggered an emotional response from myself. Bottom line, Korra is great for not being the stereotypical kids show. It has depth, and plenty of unexpected moments. Thank you for reading my rant.
It’s weird that you say that about her learning from her enemies instead of her friends cuz it fits to a single point in the show that I can point out. Katara told her to learn from her past in order to let it go, yet she failed to grasp the lesson, but later Zaheer in a way tells her the same exact thing only showing her instead, and she succeeded.
7:20 okay, I actually had a theory about bloodbending taking powers. Remember how Ty Lee (and chi blockers in Korra) hit some pain points to disable bending temporarily?
I believe Amon uses bloodbending to damage those spots in your body permanently to disable people’s bending forever.
I always figured that was how it worked. Because nothing magical happened. The moment of "taking away the bending" was always surprisingly quiet and anticlimactic. Very very different from how Aang took away Ozai's bending, which was a literal conflict between their spirits. So I theorize that Aang actually took away Ozai's bending whereas Amon, surrounded by his army of chi-blocking ninja people, simply severed their chi. This explanation also helps me understand why when Amon blocked Korra's main bending, her airbending turned on, as if Amon wasn't actually taking away bending ability, but messing around with chi. Like he kind flipped a switch in people where everyone else was on/off but Korra was whateverworks/whateverdoesn'twork.
i think it would be more interesting if he used healing abilities to do it. they can affect and manipulate another person's chi to help them, so why not to hurt?
That is reasonable but the show should have explained it.
I think it's more of blocking it or disabling those spots rather to damaging because that would mean that Korra healed them, which is not what we saw when she restored their bending.

My feelings about Korra have always been messy and frustrated, but I know there were parts of it that I really loved in concept and some in execution. I love tlok, and I love it with its imperfections since nothing can be perfect and people's expectations differ from one to another significantly. Your way of telling what you think is wrong or why it is wrong makes so much sense and creates a peaceful atmosphere. Lots of "video essays" that claim tlok is garbage, talk about the mistakes in a brutal manner without even thinking "why?" thoroughly. Thank you for this video, I wish more people could be like you.
Korra deals with a lot of real life problems I say it caters to a older crowd. I love the last air bender and I love korra it was different.
AliixKatz That’s also my point. Korra is for the older, more mature people. Korra should be different than ATLA because Korra is a different Avatar meaning it will tackle almost different problems. Korra handles more mature problems like anarchy and and PTSD, whereas ATLA only covers the colonialism of the Fire Nation. This is proven because many sources say LOK has a higher age rating than ATLA. LOK may never reach the heights of ATLA, but LOK is still an animated show better than most animated/cartoon shows currently in the world
When I first tried to watch LoK, I definitely couldn’t appreciate it because I was just as immature as Korra and had no patience for her. Now that I’m a little older, I’m willing to forgive, especially because I see her as a kid.

She knows the history. she is very spiritual and also very skilled at airbending. Obviously she’s not going to be as powerful as the avatar or a bunch of grown men. @@maxbibby7777 You're not wrong in those skills of hers you mentioned, but mastery means MASTERY. It means having complete and utter expertise and knowledge of every single aspect to whatever you're a master of.
For airbending, or any bending or martial art for that matter, that absolutely includes the actual bending part, in fact that is still its main purpose. Jinora has shown nothing with her actual bending. Remember when Tenzin took on 3/4'th of the entire Red Lotus, and was stalemating them? THAT is what a master is. Those tattoos indicate airbending mastery. Jinora isn't one. She may be a proficient spiritual guide, but that has fuck all to do with airbending. Yes they follow a more spiritual philosophy, but airbenders are no less physical benders than the other three nations. Iroh was more spiritual than any airbender (except for Jinora with her retconned bs), and he was Fire Nation.
Base line is: No one deserves those tats without being an extremely competent bender. The old bearers of those tattoos were able to kill hundreds of Fire Nation elite during Sozin's Comet. I seriously doubt Jinora could even take on one of them.

I feel like Korra is like the millennials that grew up watching ATLA. We're rushed to find a place in the world. We have goals, but it's not enough when we meet them. We aren't seen as enough as our predecessors. Korra is the mental strife that we go through

Rewatching it now at 24 I realize her issues were more nuanced than Aangs. Where Aang had a central problem and clear objective goals, Korra dealt with a handful of problems including learning air bending, reviving the air nation, dealing with MULTIPLE political agendas, the spiritual world, and dealing with a image issue with the public and within herself. She had more stuff to overcome in her first year than Aang did. Korra’s story just seems more like it resonates with real life.

Zoomers have the greatest potential among millenials, if they can beat this hazard. I feel shows like Avatar, with its displays of empathy, of reflection, growth through adversity... holds much of what is needed to do so. If Korra is truly the strife you go through, then we are in a good place, and thank you, for giving me a sign that this is so.
blazo king Same. Although I vaguely remember ATLA and Korra from when I was a kid I never really watched them. Now that they’re out on Netflix I regret it, but anyways I actually am really glad I gave Korra a shot. I can see why some people don’t like it (and certain things I agree with), but I think the more adult themes went a long way in making me enjoy it. Still teaches you a lot, just like ATLA. I really liked Korra being cocky and learning, reminds me of myself somewhat.

I've just watched the entirety of LoK, and despite the flaws of the Book 2, I feel like I enjoyed it even more than the first series... Though it just could be recency bias.
Honestly the reason why I kinda like Korras character arch over Aangs is because Aangs arch is about Aang learning to become the avatar while Korras arch is about an avatar learning to be human. But Zukos arch tops both of them with no competition.
Aang’s arc was more about him becoming the avatar without giving up the things that make him who he is. He’s kinda like captain America in that way.
Personally, I can see the "New" team avatar as friends. Just, a more grown up version. Not everyone has time to spend almost every moment with their friends because people have lives of their own outside of that friendship. This makes sense for the new group with the structure of the seasons being the way it is. There are small time jumps, and they all go on with their lives. But they clearly have a connection with each other
Exactly! Thank you for bringing this up. Adult friendships are at their core different from teen friendships. Aang's team avatar kind of had no choice but to spend so much time with each other. They had to stick together as they were travelling and Aang relied on them for his training. Korra wasn't reliant upon her friends the same way Aang was. The two avatars have completely different character arcs, and I think it made a lot of sense for Korra and the rest of her team to spend more time alone than Aang and his friends, especially considering the structure of the seasons and the time in between.

That’s exactly how I felt too...and I think this is specially clear in the finale, when Mako tells Korra he’ll follow her into battle at any time-I think that line shows not only friendship and devotion, but also growth to both the characters and their relationship. The friendships in ATLA work because the characters are always together due to the overarching plot, so it’s more of an arch about learning to deal with all types of people and finding what you have in common to create meaningful connections-it’s a lesson that feels fit to the age of the characters (and the intended audience), all under 16. In LOK, on the other hand, the characters start at 17/18 and end the series in their early twenties, and the path their friendships go through feel more akin to what adult friendships are like-life may pull you all in different ways and you may disagree and fight and drift apart, but the friendship endures in the end.

Just not as good a friendship and connection imo, even with the adult friendship excuse it just didn’t work as well. And that’s why a lot of shows follow the stories of younger people because they have the chance to make those friends for life and spend more time with them when they are kids. Sure they had a connection but Korra was the only one I really cared about and that’s a problem.
Another praise I will say is DAMN does it have some amazing character designs. Like clearly TLAB is the favorite, and amazing, but the character designs (and places) stuck with me so much more in Korra. I mean Korra herself is so striking. Asami, Zahir, the Beifongs, and so many more. It really is a shame they didnt have the budget to do a full 20 episodes per season or something.
Although I will say, Book 3 Fire, the fire nation places were beautiful and I missed some of that in Korra which had more modern designs.

I think Korras Enemies were that interesting, because their Intentions weren't simply "evil" as the Firelords have been. Equality, Balance, Freedom and Order can all be good things, so in a way Korra not only struggles in finding her Place in the world, but also because her Enemies goals are not inherently bad. This is what made the correlations between Korra and the antagonists such an important part of the series. And it also transports a message that is pretty rare in these Kind of shows, that nothing really is good or evil, but the way how to achieve their goals can make people do bad things.
Jaysee nope. As I recall, at least one of the major enemies was a big proponent of essentially anarchism. And anyone with half a mind knows that those systems always fail and are objectively awful. They create power vacuums which breed great internal division until people get tired of it and wish for the old system back.

Maybe he was blinded by the concept of freedom? Maybe he had this freedom, and wanted others to have it? Possibly it sounded perfect to HIM. Just because in our world, we know that it doesn’t work, doesn’t mean that they do!

This is a beautifully written and very elegantly articulated review. Very balanced, highlighting its shortcomings and appreciating its strengths. While I personally don't think The Legend of Korra comes anywhere close to the highs of Avatar, I still find myself appreciating so much of what it does well. If I could only change one thing about the show, it would be to have a smaller, more fleshed out cast with longer seasons so that we could spend more time getting to know the relationships between characters like Tenzin, Lin, Asami and co. I truly think Tenzin is the best character in the show, and yet I feel we didn't to spend anywhere near as much time as we should have with him. There is so much unexplored potential in his story that the show constantly teases without delving deeper.
Tenzin could have been really explored to the fullest. The huge responsibilities he carries , the sibling backlash he gets , building a whole culture back again and being the only one able to do it. A breakdown of sorts with him realising all this and then him finally being able to enter spirit world by meditation would be so darn good.
9:00 - 9:36 hit like a truck. My favorite line out of the video, I enjoyed the beginning of the last season (and the end of the third) because it touched on expectation which is always something I've struggled with in real life. Trying to amount to something bigger than yourself is the hardest (yet most rewarding) thing you can do and I felt like I was back to watching the real issues of ATLA because of how well they showed Korra's feelings.

I personally disliked a lot the aspects of Korra. One big thing that ruined the show for me was the character exploration (one of Raz's points), they completely threw away what made TLA special, I bet if they included the original writer Korra would've been as good, if not better than Avatar. It's such a huge turnoff to see a story like this suffer because of crappy corporate garbage instead of the actual story itself, it's what depressed me about Game of Thrones, it's really hard to watch a show that completely shattered its potential, what made me feel good about watching Avatar was the satisfaction of each and every issue in Aang's story is resolved. I felt like Korra was just not there to begin with. I still loved both shows, but I can't recommend Korra.

it's not an amazing show. people who like the korra show forget what magic the original show held. it's not a shallow surface comparison. the original went to great lengths with eloquence while the korra show seemed like it was trying too hard to detach itself from the original when it should never have been that way because it's the same universe.
I always found the fight scenes and choreography in Korra were some of the coolest and most creative ever. Definitely a positive from the whole series.

This is an amazing Retrospective/Review, I completely agree with your opinion on the weird plot holes. My guess on Lava Bending is that it is a mix of Fire and Earth Bending. Bolin (probably spelled that wrong) grew up with his brother Mako and knows how he Fire Bends, It would make sense for him to be able to recreate Fire Bending as Lava Bending. I look at this like a mirror to Lightning Bending, Iroh studied Water Benders in order to create Lightning. The idea of an Earth Bender studying a Fire Bender to create Lava Bending makes sense and the idea of combined Element Bending is awesome.

I think it really depends on which show you watched first...I grew up with Korra, so when I watched ATLA I was surprised at how slow-paced the beginning was, and how much more character-driven it was. So I prefer Korra. But I realize that ATLA has its merits.
