I still complete some open world games, but i don't care about the collectibles and all side quests anymore.

Phone screens are not inverted. If you swipe to the left, the icons move to the left. If it did the opposite, that would be inverted. It's like how if you swipe down, the menu drops down. Every action is you pulling or pushing things in the direction they go.

I just want devs to always have put a little note saying "this is the option the game was BUILT and BALANCED around." That's the easiest answer for me.

This game is just way too overwhelming, wasn't for me either, turn based combat was also a major deal breaker

Three things I've noted for an enjoyable open world: 1. Less repetitive and meaningful side content 2. Engaging traversal 3. Non-linear story or gameplay There's one more: Cater to players that have short attention span. Because they get bored easily. Much better if they watch tiktok than play games if that's the problem.

Elden rings open world was pretty amazing. Red dead 2 handled theirs well too.

I hated the souls games. I tried all of them and got past about 4 bosses in 2. To my surprise Elden ring is one of my favorite games of all time.

The character building and flood of information related to it is not for everyone, not just non gamers. But that said, some of the points you make are not a gameplay issue but rather your lady being somewhat simple minded, no offense. After watching the intro and getting a worm stuck in your eye you don't know what to do? Gee I think these tentacle aliens might not be your friends and you might wanna get out of there any way you can. Would you wait around in real life for someone to tell you what to do? Not liking the companions is absolutely fine, even intended I should think, though again stranded alone with a parasite in your head, you might wanna stick with similarly afflicted strangers for the time being - or not, if you think you're better off alone. But that's realism in the sense that life isn't a railroad of easy laid out tasks, you have to think about who to trust and what to do, which is the very thing that makes this game amazing. In other words, some people like holidays were you book a program and someone tells you where to go, what to watch and what to eat and others just go to a foreign place and explore it, enjoying the freedom and adventure. It's not a fault of the game to be one or the other, some people are simply incapable of enjoying either type

I love achievements. Not necessarily doing all of them, or trying to - but knowing that there are little goals to tick off the list other than "getting through the game". (I generally enjoy the process more when there's a promised result at the end of it)

For me, open world games are just a bigger checklist.

It actually depends on the game. For example, I read all entries in Grim Dawn - the game makes it easier to accidentally start reading, and entries actually increase immersion - most of them are explicitly related to the location they are found in, and often describe personal experiences of people just before the catastrophe. That said, the worst example is Fallout New Vegas: you can't take the entries with you, and the terminals interrupt action at very inconvenient times.

Just a note about slider options for characters, people would make ridiculous looking characters that didn’t fit with the rest of the game, taking you out of it. Also depending on how they built the character rigs, expressions may not map to custom characters. It seems like Larian mapped actual people for all the presets

as a player that chances the difficulty of a game to the hardest one possible from the start i totally agree with it being bad for lore and story. Example:God of war/God of War difficulty Uncharted 4/Brutal difficulty i also agree with the Elden Ring being too easy for a explorer logic, i played it and finished it two times; one time at launch when there wasn't any wikis for the map so discovering something felt like you could be one of the very few people that found it but the second time i did a playthrough it felt harder it may just be that game was patched a lot (i mean it did) but exploring was indeed taking the difficulty away a lot of times edit:also i just remembered an example for adaptive difficulty. Max Payne 3 did gave you painkillers no matter the difficulty upon dying in the same checkpoint many times

You picked my 3 favorite open world games from ps4. I don't think anything is wrong with them, you have a way you want them to be. I don't like progression lock like assassin creed does. Not doing side missions and upgrading your stuff makes missions harder. I play on hard or lethal for GOT. Lethal is 1 or 2 hit death throughout the game.

I agree with your wife and you, the lack of voice acting for Tav/Dark urge is annoying. Honestly they could have AT LEAST voiced some important lines or those who come up regardless of dialogue choice.

Minecraft’s main quest is a good starting point: “There’s this thing that you can do if you feel like it, and you’ll get some cool stuff for doing it, but it’s fine if you spend your time playing with your dogs or something. I had similar experience with my girlfriend but i did not let her figure it out for that long and interviened also later on when she started to love the game i showed her that the game also has the suspense aspect of facing a boss or a dengerous place like the nether, ocean monument and the story of the 3 elder guardians, the end dragon and end dimention, the wither all that added to her thought that this is not a scripted game and can be played based on knowledge as well as exploring and experiencing.

Baldur's Gate 3 was locked into the Larian decision to have companion characters ALSO be playable. . . which was a mistake. If they'd have just had a few actors record voice lines for the created character (and you choose the voice) it would have been better. The whole "play as Gale" thing is dumb and not what Baldur's Gate is about. They shouldn't have wasted resources on it.
