PORTUGAL EUROVISION 2022 - REACTING TO ‘SAUDADE SAUDADE’ BY MARO (FIRST LISTEN…WOWZERS)

  • Hi guys! Welcome back to my channel! If you’re new here, my name’s Rachel and I’m a huge Eurovision fan. In todays video, I reacted to Portugal’s song for ESC 2022, ‘Saudade Saudade’ by Maro.
Portugal after winning in 2017 have come back every year with quality tracks, not necessarily designed for the contest, but more as a show of the Portuguese musical culture and styles, which I REALLY love.
In this case, Maro has brought forward a song that is so subtle yet so stunningly beautiful. The delicate vocals accompanied by the organic and ethereal guitar lines create such a wonderful combination that I wouldn’t dare change anything about it. And then the backing vocals get added in on top, yet again creating this lovely texture that should be admired and not changed.
What I love about the harmonies, is that they aren’t your stereotypical classic harmony part writing - they’re chordal in texture, yes, and don’t weave in a polyphonic style, but they move and create suspended notes and encircle the melody line from both sides to really just create this wonderful sound experience. It’s great.
I am really impressed with this song, and can’t wait to keep listening.
    Initial Score: 9/10

Maro is the most complete musician in the entire competition this year. Her tone is so clean and unique. Most importantly, her beautiful and captivating face! Her expressiveness alone is enough to help her qualify. The rest of the package will help her come top 10.

Fun fact - she collaborated with Jacob Collier on the song Lua. She’s a complete artist and this is definitely the most soulful song this year. I suggest you listen to the performance from the competition itself as here they were clearly distracted by the celebration and the general mood was a bit lost.

💯Less is more! I was sure you're gonna like this one...
🎵Such a unique and genuine song. It captivates you and gently resonates the artist's emotion. Love the simple yet effective instrumentation and the way the song is evolving musically in the most elaborate way. Those harmonies are superb! I even like the simple staging, cause I think it makes it more intimate. Time signature is actually 6/8
🤩I knew MARO from her collaboration with Jacob Collier and when I found out she won Festival da Cancao, I was thrilled. If you like this one, I totally recommend to check her other works.
🤔Don't know how people will respond at this, but it will be a real injustice if juries ignore it. I would be extremely happy to see it finishing Top10. Pure quality.
P.S. I really love your work and always looking forward to your reactions. Love the fact that you are giving emphasis on the musical and compositional elements of each track and that you analyze them objectively, but also giving your personal honest opinion in the end. Much love 💙

I completely agree with your view when it comes to this Eurovision entry from Portugal.
It's just so simple, so human, so pleasant, and after covid and a war close by, it just feels like a very much needed chilled out song, that says a lot about missing the people we lost (or are lost, or we may loose), how it is important never to forget them, as well as the good times that past but we will not forget, the longing for affection and hope that love will prevail.. All this without drama, but a sense of peace and a smile.

The version you watched was the winner's performance. This has GOT TO be my favourite this year. So classy, so professional, so emotional. This is very much a song that makes me cry, especially given the message of the song with Maro's grandfather's death being the subject! Maro, just like many of Portugal's entries, has the spirit of Salvador Sobral in her! Music is not fireworks! This is music! You should react to the version on Maro's channel of her and many other women harmonising with her with several men playing actual guitars around her. It's pretty amazing.

As a portuguese i got to say to you: you absolutely nailed the meaning of the portuguese word saúdade, you felt it for what it is.
This is way it's hard to translate the exact definition of the word saúdade as it is not sn intellectual concept but an emotional. This is a feel8ng everybody all over the world feel but for some reason only the portuguese and galician languages have a word for it.
      Well done you.

You just described a bit of what "saudade" means

  • @Doivid297
    @Doivid297 Před 2 lety +12

The word "saudade" is not easy to translate, but according to a comment I've read, the song itself pretty much sums up the feeling of saudade. It's basically a longing for someone or something we love that cannot come back, kind of akin to nostalgia but not quite the same. I'm sure someone Portuguese/lusophone can and possibly already has explained it better here.
And I'm with you, it's just so mellow and easy to listen to (in fact I find the soft guitar and the beat quite addictive). It's in my top 5 of this year, and since 2017, Portugal are just killing it at ESC imo. Could be a dark horse too!

    • @birdieshattock2968
      @birdieshattock2968 Před 2 lety +1

Trying to explain the concept of the word saudade, saudade it's a feeling for someone or something you miss but gives at the same time a joyful pleasure, brings good memories.
About the chorus, this kind of harmonies are used in portuguese folk music in the region of Beira Baixa, just women. 🌿

In this performance, Maro's charisma was perceived very well. That's the performance after knowing that they won the trophy in Lisbon, they were already too euphoric, the vocal part and interpretation didn't go so well. I recommend the presentation before this one. It's technically very beautiful. A song like this belongs to a different league, it happens very rarely in Eurovision.

I do think it is the best song in the Eurovision festival.
But i feel it will end up very low on the voting numbers, i'm affraid. It's not often quality that wins but neighbouring countries politics. Salvador Sobral's win in 2017 was an outlier in both for Portugal itsrlf and how countries voted that year. This year Portugal will end again at the bottom places despite the great quality of the song. I'd love to be proved wrong, i'd love for my country to host the Eurovision again.

Saudade hasn't any kind of translation to other languages. It is a specific word/meaning from Portugal and the Portuguese/Portuguese speakers. It relates to the time of Discoveries when the sailors sailed from Portugal, leaving their families behind, and the feeling the mothers, sons, and wives had was more than a miss you. It was "Saudade," a strong emotion, coming from our most profound feelings when we lose someone when we don't see someone for a long, long time, more substantial than an "I miss so much"!
"SAUDADE" - Everyone has, but only the Portuguese has a specific word for it. It is one of the Portuguese words that there isn't any kind of translation to other languages.
SAUDADE is... SAUDADE! (More than longing, more than I miss you, it comes really from the bottom of our hearts, from the far point of our sentiment when we miss someone or something)

Is it me, or is this song actually in 6/4?

Hmm I think 6/8 - I can hear quaver movements instead of crotchet

@@ThePeaceAround You may be right, but no matter how hard I try I can't "feel" it without forcing my brain to accept it. I did some searching, and there's somebody on Reddit who thinks it's in 12/8. You could argue that, I suppose, but each measure is clearly six beats long to my ears.
I had this conversation with someone a while ago, where we both argued about 6/4 time. I listen to a lot of Japanese mathrock bands, and they LOVE 6/4. I suppose that's why my brain picks up on it easily.

In another note, and I do beg your pardon for saying this, but you remind me a lot of Kate Bush. I practically never compare people with others, much less with famous people, so please do not get any wrong meaning. But actually you do remind me a lot of her...
I consider Kate Bush the best female music artist I can think of, so I hope you can take this as a compliment :))

That is such a compliment - I love Kate bush. She is an inspiration to female musicians. ❤️

I just came in here, just because I wanted to known your reaction and reception of the Portuguese entry, which I can not appreciate, I must say. Due to your reaction clip, I had to listen to this song from the beginning to the very end. And now I can appreciate it a bit more, especially the vocal harmonies, something that has always appealed to me. Ok, I still find this a bit boring, and I can not find a satisfying climax of this song or of its performance. But now I find it better than before. Thanks fa lot or your review!

Won't qualify I suspect. Too simple. I don't know why some people call simple things quality to don't offend anyone. This not quality, this is just boring, repetive and vocally poor.

Repetitive, poor and decadent is the song from Spain you idolize!

      I’m always first, never secondary
As soon as I make doom, doom
      With my boom, boom
