- This 7 minute video produced by Frank Gosselin in June of 1987 shows the USS Simon Lake arriving at the U.S. Submarine Base in Holy Loch Scotland to relieve the USS Hunley of its duties. The video also shows the USS Hunley leaving Holy Loch later that month.
The US Navy were very sadly missed when they eventually pulled out of the Holy Loch, I’ve heard nothing but positive experiences by those who visited or were stationed there.
Glad to say the US Navy are regularly visitors to HMNB Clyde and are always welcomed in Scotland. 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸
Was on the Slimey Lake in Kings Bay. Great Crew!!!
I remember that day like it was yesterday, I was on the hunley at the time. Met my wife aboard the hunley we had some great times, 31 yrs and 3 kids later still going strong lol!
I was on the hunley too took us on that as well as the John neilson I think that's what it was called I think it was a submarine maybe and other ships too but can't remember the names.
Hi A've been on the simon Lake in the 60s I was in Dunclutha children's home in Kirn the Americans took us on it never forgotten it Americans were brilliant.
I cross decked to the Lake. Loved my time in Scotland. Great shot.
It was an honor to participate in the defense of Scotland and the United Kingdom.
USA Los Alamos AFDB-7 1978 to 1979.
I will forever keep you in my heart Terry Sweeny from Port's Glasgow.
I dated Alene Sweeny from Port Glasgow 1974, I wonder if they were related. Her older brother was the boxing champion and no he never assaulted me. We would walk along the streets in Port Glasgow while she kick her soccer ball she was a very good girl with beautiful red hair.
I served on the Simon Lake starting in July 1987 as a storekeeper. This video brings back memories.
I was on the USS Hunley. I tried unsuccessfully to cross-deck to the Simon Lake so I called my detailer and got lucky because I received orders to the USS Los Alamos.
i served on the Holland 1979-81 and loved every minute of it.. best 18 months a sailor could ask for
I was on the U.S.S. Holland from 1985 to 1988. These tenders were amazing in what they could do and produce, like a floating shipyard.
I was on the Bridge with the Captain and Navigator. I was assigned the post 1JV phone talker during Operations! We had all seasons when we came through that channel. Loved my time there and the experience! Thanks for sharing...✌
I was there when both the Lake and the Hunley were together when the Henry Clay was in refit in Holy Lock.
Wow. I was on the Simon Lake arriving that day. I was in the Radio Shack/comm center RM3
Also their was an American family that use to takes us for the weekend he was high up in the navy he had a German wife and they had a kid he was about 3 at the time they had German shepherd and a cat called peewee the dog was called garff I think that's how you spell it they had a cottage in struchur not sure if that's the right spelling for that place, just wondering if anyone knows them...probably retired now and hopefully their still around somewhere probably in America 🇺🇸
This is awesome. My dad was on the USS Simon Lake at this time, and it was over a year later I was born in Greenock. I would love to go back some day.
What was your dad's name? I think I may have served at the same time with him.
@@RecklessG1 Keith Daniels
@@LtDan1202 I was on the Simon Lake from 81-86, I transferred off while we were in the yards in Pascagoula, MS just a few months before this video was taken. At the time I was a TM2 ..David Church. I seem to remember a Daniel's. What was his rate? Be sure to send my greetings to him.
@@RecklessG1 I'm not sure what it was I'd have to ask him.
My twin brother and I were both born in Greenock. My dad was stationed in Dunoon 86-90 I believe. We lived at Waverley Court.
Made that same journey in the summer of 1966. Left on the Hunley about six weeks later.
I was on the Simon Lake from 1968 until she was relieved by the Canopus. Stayed on Canopus until 1971.
I came over to holy loch on canopus in early 70. Relieved simon lake. Stayed on canopus until late 71. Worked in the NDT lab. Loved the time there.
my mom worked on that ship for a long time
Sad day for a lot of us Hunley crew. The beginning of the end of some awesome times spent in the Holy Loch. Looking back, I keep wondering if I should've cross-decked to the Simon Lake.
Great video! The Hunley's the ship I remember the most for some reason, being from Dunoon.
Holy Loch has its own, lesser known sea monster, ‘The Holy Loch Monsignor’.
It may have been called the John Nelson not John neilson such a long time ago so if anyone out there knows let me know, good memories 😊
A little before my time but love it.
I was on the Lake...8/76 to 2/79, R5 Div., 67F(RADCAL), Nuclear Support Division. I got transferred to Charleston Naval Medical Center for medical evaluation and later a knee operation. I was an E5 at the time.
Crazy to think that an American and Russian submarine collided where this ship was filmed in November 1974.
I remember that incident I was on the Dry Dock in 74. I don't remember the collision part but do remember the Russian sub surfacing after two of our subs spotted it. GQ for the entire flotilla.
@@harrellmorlan6817i tried to send a link of the story in one of the UK's newspapers but it has been deleted by CZcams.
How was your time in Dunoon? Have you ever been back?
That was my ship
Me too.
Will Gerhart, was stationed there 1972/73. Anyone seen him?
I was there that day on one of those tug boats YTB Piqua,19 yr old sailor,I hated Scotland at the time, but looking back on it,nice experience.
Hey, im wondering if anyone was in the us navy that was stationed in Dunoon that possibly new my Papa, Bill Tidmore ? Id love to here from you if you did
