USS Caron getting rammed by the Russians in the Black Sea - Feb 1988

  • In February 1988, Caron operating with Yorktown, entered Soviet 7 miles ) territorial waters limit in the Black Sea off the Crimean Peninsula. Under international law, this act could be permissible if the ship was progressing from one point in international waters to another point in international waters via the shortest course possible, but according to the Soviet Union, it was the right of the USSR to authorize or prohibit travel in selected areas within the 12 mile limit. The United States however did not recognize the Soviet's claim in this case. To prevent it from becoming accepted precedent, the US Navy claimed that it had sailed warships through such areas at regular intervals in the past, which we had, not just two years prior.
    On this occasion, Caron had onboard a ships signal exploitation spaces system, operated by a crew of 18 in support of the U.S. National Security Agency. This system was capable of recording data on Soviet defense radars and communications.
    In response, the Soviets deployed a destroyer and a Mirka II class light frigate as well as a KGB and "civilian" ships to intercept the U.S. ships. Several times, Soviet vessels obtained radar "lock" on the Caron and Yorktown. Both American ships maintained a constant course and speed throughout the incident. Eventually, the Soviets lightly rammed both ships. No significant damage resulted to any of the ships involved.
    Both US warships sent an account of the incident to the Commander in Chief of United States Naval Forces in Europe. The Caron reported at 13:20 local time, it was informed on channel 16 VHF by the Bezzavetny: "Soviet ships have orders to prevent violation of territorial waters, extreme measure is to strike your ship with one of ours."[1] The reply of the Caron was "I am engaged in innocent passage consistent with international law."[1] The Yorktown, in its report stated that on 9:56, local time, it was contacted by the Bezzavetny via channel 16 and told to leave Soviet territorial waters or "our ship is going to strike on yours."[1] Then, according to the report, the Bezzavetny came alongside port side of the Yorktown at 10:03 and bumped it by turning into the ship.[1]
    As for the music, take note that this was shot on VHS and back in 1988, when we did not have CZcams. The only people we thought would see this was friends and family, not a bunch of people from all over the world. No the music is not masking the screams from the crew on the USS Caron, so if you don't like it, there is a volume button - use it

    The Caron was named after my Corpsman and friend Wayne Caron. We were in 2nd plt. 3rd. Battalion, 7th Marines in VN. Wayne was killed on 28 July 1968 in an ambush. I was a sonar operator on one of these Russian ships back in '84. It was very similar; ours had only one two-barrel 55mm automatic cannon and two torpedo tubes as well as a lot of anti-submarine bombs. The humps in the back are the suction of two jet engines which will blow compressed air into a tunnel downstream of the propellers. These things were quite fast.

    Facts the author forgot to mention:
    1. The video shows only the very beginning of the incident, not the whole story
    2. Yorktown had significant damages, including damaged Harpoon launchers, and caught fire
    3. Following the incident Yorktown was out of service for several months because of repairs
    4. After the collision, US ships immediately left the area and went to neutral waters
    5. International law (UNCLOS III) allows defining territorial waters using straight baselines in case of indented coastal line.
    6. As a consequence, US ships did not respect limits of Russia's territorial waters.
    7. US ship could not use the right of innocent passage as they were on recon mission. (Art. 19, UNCLOS III)

    I remember being told by my grandpa that stuff like this wasn't infrequent back then. He said that more than a few times Russian ships in the same port as ours would do uncomfortable passes. My favorite was one where he was on deck and a Russian cruiser went by almost as close as the one in the video, to where they could see all the guns on the ship aimed at theirs. When he said everything he emphasized that it was pretty literal, their deck was filled with sailors pointing machine guns at their ship yelling, and when they got their closest they opened their torpedo hatches. All of this while the Russian ship was leaving the port that they were heading into(yea they went out of their way to get right up to our ship lol). Not that my grandpa didn't say that we didn't do stuff like that either.
    One short funny story being that his captain was getting sick of "fishing boats" that were obviously spy ships tailing them, so when one of them failed to get out of the way when their destroyer was heading in it's direction his captain told the crew to "Run him over!", the little fishing boat barely getting out of the way before it almost capsized from the wake of the destroyer.

      You get what you see. WoW is a game. No real life. There has been a lot of collisions between ships that there was no explosion. A destroyer bow is in the Atlantic after being hit by a cargo ship. The USS Wisconsin has part of the bow from the USS Kentucky after a collision in the 50s. These were direct hits. Not glancing blows. It's not uncommon for ships to collide when doing replenishment. It's also not uncommon for ships to bump in ports when they're tied together. Tugs always collide when they push ships around the harbor. It's nothing more than what you see in the video.

    • @AlexanderTch
      @AlexanderTch Před 9 lety +131

      Lol. It's not frigate. It's more ship of corvette class, even smaller. It even didn't have name, only abbreviation SKR-6(project 35). Its displacement is only 1140 tons. Caron's displacement is 8040 tons. So, american ship was almost 8 times heavier. But who cares. Russian ship damaged boat davit and destroyed saving boat on forage. Russians showed that they were not joking and their intention was serious. Could be even ramming. That's russian style to attack in any case and they fulfill their task. Americans shitted in their pants and retreated.
      Try to find video where another russian ship, frigate "Bezzavetny" is ramming USS "Yorktown". "Bezzavetny" was only 3 times lighter than "Yorktown" (3200 tons against 9600). You'll see that results of that ramming were much much more dramatic for americans. Maybe that's reason why publisher has not included video with "Bezzavetny" ramming in this clip.

    • @stealthbiker45
      @stealthbiker45  Před 9 lety +88

      stealthbiker45 I was at school. But there are lots of materials available in Russia regarding that event. And many participants gave reports and interviews. You just see one source of info. or desinfo to be more exact. So, you can't compare different point of views, and you don't want to. You don't want to check facts and documents, you just transmit words from your TV, which shows only american channels.

      The radio attack on the russian ship is one of the most well known cold war stories in europe that I'm surprised there are people who don't know the US was trespassing and illegally jamming other boats in the area, refused to leave after being told to leave all day, then attacked the police boat that was sent to escort it out. It's a prime example of americans not knowing what they are talking about.

      After President Reagan announced the attack on Libya, a reporter asked if he thought the attack would curtail Libya’s terrorism.

      stealthbiker45 lol. The sound of a broadside is like sitting under a trashcan and then having someone with a sledgehammer hit the can with all his strength. It makes every bone in your body vibrate.
      That situation was intense, but fun. I still wish the battleships were still in use. Replace the old steam boilers with nuclear reactors to cut down on operating costs and you would have the ultimate ship.
      It sure is nice talking to an old sailor that remembers the good old days. I hardly relate to any of todays sailors. This might sound sexist, but women and men on a ship together just does not work to well, it just causes more problems all around.
      P.S. Thanks for the video, it was great to watch. I wish I had video of the Iowa, when I was aboard her, but all I had was a Polaroid camera.
