  • The year was 1988 and the 'Greasy-G' was docked in Philly (PNSY) for an extended overhaul. This video was shot by two Boatswain's Mates Rhindage and Hurst. Originally shot on a handheld VHS camcorder, the video has since been converted to DVD from VHS and eventually found its way to CZcams.
I am the only EN listed from 1986. Nicknamed "Phil" I was an EN3 and I am in the video. If you have any questions or comments please leave them in the comments section below, and share this video with others you may think would enjoy seeing it.
There is about 30 minutes more to this video still on the DVD. If you were on the Garcia during this time I will be more than happy to send a copy of the full video to you.
USS Garcia (FF-1040) was the lead ship of her class of destroyer escort ships, later reclassified as frigates, in the United States Navy. She was named for U.S. Marine Private First Class Fernando Luis Garcia, the first Puerto Rican Medal of Honor Recipient, who laid down his life in service of his fellow American soldiers.
Laid down on 16 October 1962 by Bethlehem Steel of San Francisco, California, the Garcia was launched on 31 October 1963 and commissioned on 21 December 1964. Originally designated DE-1040, she was re-designated FF-1040 in 1975 as part of the Navy's 1975 ship reclassification.
She served in the Atlantic Fleet and was home-ported in Charleston, South Carolina.
Following her decommissioning on 31 January 1989, she was transferred to Pakistan on the same day. Renamed Saif, she was returned to the United States on 13 January 1994 and was then sold for scrap on 29 March 1994.

Great ship. I rode the Garcia back when it was designated DE-1040 with the admiral staff for a short time. Really was a memorable experience being chased around by a hurricane in the Carib.

It was great to see this video of the Garcia. I was on the Brumby DE 1044 from '67 to 70. Both the Garcia and the Brumby shared the same homeport in Newport RI for a time. And I had a chance to visit the Garcia in 1980 when it was in Boston. I was a STG on the 1044 and I had a chance to go below decks on the Garcia when visiting. Its funny, how much I remembered about the ship after being off of this class for 10 years. And watching this video, I could still remember so much about the ship, like it was all yesterday.

OH MY GOD. That was great. I so miss seeing the inside of my old Grease G. Plus a bonus of the mess hall and ending in my old birthing quarter. Thank you so much, I can't believe it took me so long to find this. MMS3 David J. Brownhill 1977-1981 USS Garcia FF-1040.

I requested permission to come aboard the ship around March 1988 as OSSA Miller. My LPO was OS1(SW) Thorpe. This was my first duty station. I remember a lot of the people in the video. I eventually retired as a CS1(SW) back in 2007. You have brought back fond memories shipmate. I would love to see the remainder of the video. Thanks for your service!

I was onboard her 1985-86..the ship was in bad shape, but the best thing I remember was the crew onboard and how they were so willing to help. I was an RM1 in CR Divi...

this is my wifes account, thus the picture, but this is the mysterious "Trent" that left the ship about minute 4 1/2, then was later on the pier getting wet from the fire hose. I would love a copy of the full version please:)

    1044 here.
Our lounge in ops berthing was right in front of the ladder.
We did our overhaul in Bath Iron Works Portland, ME. 8-87 to 11-88.
    How long was the Garcia's?

FF 1044 decom crew checked aboard Jan 1, '87. Remember that layout in weapons berthing with the small round hatch going down to reefer decks.

I saw the comment She was called the Greasy-G. I am a 💯 disabled Navy Vet and Tin-Can Sailor fm the Vietnam War. I find that Comment Disrespectful as my Last Name is GARCIA. How dare you use such a RACIST Term for a Ship of the line named after a Hero Marine. KMA
