  • This is a deleted scene from "Der Untergang" Extended Edition. In this scene, Johannes Hentschel, a technican who stayed in the bunker to took care of the generators, comes out of Führerbunker and looks around. He sees the remains of Hitler and Eva Brown's burned bodies. He also sees the dead bodies of Josef and Magda Goebbels. When he came back in, he also passes by the dead bodies of General Krebs and Burgdorf, who had shot themselves. Johannes encounters a group of Soviet female medics. They ask Johannes where are Hitler and his wife, and Johannes tells them that they are dead. They also ask where are the clothes, and Johannes says he will show them. He stops one of the soldiers from opening a door. Another soldier opens it and she witnesses Goebbels' children's dead bodies. She looks at Johannes with surprise and a bit of anger in her face, and Johannes leads the women to Eva Braun's room. The women scream with joy with the clothes.

Johannes Hentschel stayed in the bunker until the end to look after the generators which were supplying electricity, air and water to the medical bunkers under the Reich Chancellery. By May 2nd, Johannes Hentschel and Rochus Misch, a radio operator, were only people staying in the bunker. They exchanged letters to their wives in case anything happens to them. Then Rochus Misch left the bunker and Johannes became the last person to stay in the bunker. He surrendered to the Soviets when they entered the bunker. He was in captivity until he was released in 1949. Hentschel died in Achern, 1982.

@@KORHISTORYARCHIVE In WW1 there had been a stereotype in the German and Austro-Hungarian armed forces that a Russian POW who spoke German was likely to be a Jew. For many Jews, standard German was merely a higher-prestige form of the Yiddish they might have spoken at home (there was a tendency to see Yiddish as "jargon" rather than as a proper language). This was sometimes carried over into WW2. At least one Soviet junior officer who broadcast propaganda in German over a microphone during WW2 was Jewish and her original language was Yiddish. At the end of the war, many Germans found that Western Allied troops, especially US and Canadians, who could communicate in German were frequently Jews although in a number of cases they were German-Americans.

He was keeping the generator going that powered the field hospital in the Reich Chancellory building. Later a group of boozed up male Soviet troops appeared full of international solidarity and told him he would be a valuable expert worker back in Mother Russia. The party mood changed when a Commissar tried to open Hitler's study door which apparently had been torched and Hentschall tried to stop him as he feared the fire wasn't out. The nurses found him because they traced where this marvellous boon of light for tending the wounded was coming from by following the cables. I think the nurses treat Hentschel fair in the film because they know he is the electricity provider and has surrendered to them in preference to abandoning his post and his responsibility. That deserves a little bit of respect. Even so, I think he is wise to step forward and meet them; they would have been much less gentle with him if he had tried to hide.

The one part I always look back on in this deleted scene was the russians reactions to finding the dead bodies of the children. Yes they were the children of one of the many hated Nazis, but they were still children. I can imagine how the russians must've felt seeing the bodies, as the russians more then likely have children waiting for them back home. When a Red Army LT Col came to the bunker shortly after, Hentschel prevented him from opening an door due to an ongoing fire. This was perceived then as Hentschel was involved in attempting to kill the Red Army officer by booby trap. He was arrested and also dressed as a nurse in humilitation, he was given a 10 year sentence but was released in 1949 more likely due to his cooperation with the fanatical Soviet investigation of Hitler's last days and death and that he was not a member of the army.

It's not coward's route. Them committing suicide was on behalf of Germany's interests. And it actually turned out to be good for Germany in the long run. It would've been worse for Germany and Germans had the allies got their hands Hitler and Goebbels. Cold War was already looming around, the distrust among allies was already there prior to Battle of Berlin. And allies already agreed Soviets would take Berlin as well as divide Germany after the war in Tehran 1943. Hitler knew what he was doing. A nation's highest leader/representative gets hanged in front of its own people, that would've been an utter humiliation, the consequences would've been worse. Germany got destroyed in WW2, but unlike WW1, it wasn't a humiliation. Germans fighting till May 1945 turned out to be good for them. Just 3 more years of suffering and then, allies turning on each other and starting the Cold War.

Well, in fact, the scene could well have taken place. And those who will shout "swear Rusnya-the German master is looting" and those who will defend the holy sanctity of Soviet soldiers simply do not understand what is happening:
The scene shows female soldiers, against the background of the war that ended, who have not seen beautiful things for a long time. Someone is fighting because and besides the hateful pea jacket has not worn anything for the last few years. Someone has never seen them at all, because the rural population in the USSR at that time was 2 \ 3.
And it would be nonsense if all these beauty-starved women didn't start looting Eva Braun's wardrobe.

I could imagine how exotic it must have been for Soviet females as elegant and expensive gowns were something they simply didn't have. In 'The Last Battle' author Cornelius Ryan related how some of the really backwards Soviet soldiers (that followed the professional frontline fighters, got boozed up and turned into a mass rape machine) pulled faucets out of walls thinking the water would somehow magically run along with unscrewing lightbulbs thinking they'd light up anywhere. I do know Stalin sent many freed Soviet POW's and forced laborers to the gulag. In his paranoia he felt their long captivity had caused them to become 'too Germanized' as many of the women had started stylizing their hair and dressing like German women.

According to my relatives and family friends that served in the Soviet Army, it was not uncommon for women to be first into bunkers. Many women were trained for tunnel and bunkers and especially in work that involved checking for trip wires and hidden traps. According to the sexism of the time and culture, women were often thought to better at that sort of combat work because they were smaller and more likely to be cautious and observant than young men. I have read at least one account based on eyewitnesses of the last days of HItler's bunker that first Soviet forces to enter the bunker were women from a transportation unit who were specifically tasked to make sure the area was cleared of booby traps.

I think the fact you can see the shadow of the camera dolly to the right as it's tracking to the left at 0.30 may be why this was cut.

Being detained by women at the very end of WW2 sounds like pure random luck.
