  • A Sunday afternoon drive from the Holy Loch, Sandbank, to the site of the old US Commisary in Dunoon (now the co-op).
Filmed in Argyll, this area is well known for being the home to the US Navy in Scotland up until 1992. The USS Simon Lake being the best known ship to have berthed in the Holy Loch.
We pass Hunters Quay Holiday Village and the Western Ferries terminal on the River Clyde before driving along the shore to the Rock Cafe, and then driving through Dunoon Town Centre, past the iconic Argyll Hotel

What a beautiful place to be stationed, I miss Scotland and the people. Someday, I would like to show my son where dad lived.

I lived there as a baby. My father was stationed there in the late 80's. We visited back in 2012 and absolutely loved it. My dad loved revisting old memories and sites with me. Showed me the Navy housing we lived at 14 Waverley Court.

The cabbies there never drove by the water, they always went up the hill and cut through the residential areas. What memories of that place.

Quickest point A-B. Good, reliable cabbies!

I was thinking the same thing. When I was young we lived in Eagle Lake. The cabbies would always drive us to the commissary / exchange or downtown through a patch of woods, but a main road that was heavily lined with trees.
Never by the water. Before moving into Eagle Court, we lived in a a flat above shops. There was a convenient store beneath us that also rented videos and we always got candy there. There was a little restaurant down the road where we got fried egg or toasted bean sandwiches.
Best fish and chip spot was Anselmo's in downtown Dunoon ❤
I've been back to Scotland twice as an adult. I want to live there so badly, but I know in my heart it will never happen again so I just visit when possible. I have Scottish friends there who we stay with when we visit so that makes it extra nice ❤

A lovely video. Thanks for posting it.
I lived in Dunoon from '65 to '66. Or was it Kirn? My father's business went bust, so a priest friend of his loaned us his cottage. On Alexandra Parade, though I don't recall the exact spot. The lane beside it ran up to a huge house where the Lanigan family lived. He was a senior officer on the Hunley. Their living room had keepsakes from all over. Coral from the tropics. No seashells from Dunoon. (They'd be next.)
I remember billions of midges in summer. Biting north winds mixed with rain in winter. Hanging out on the beach with my brothers. Skipping flat stones out into the Clyde. Popping hundreds of slimy sacs in the seaweed.
Half the kids in my class were American. The boys had crewcuts and bronze skin. (We were bluish-white.) They said things like "It figures" and "Oh brother." When we'd "Oh sister" right back at them, the hands of the black girls would go up to their mouths and they'd giggle like crazy. They spoke like the Americans we saw on Top of the Pops. You know, Diana Ross and the Supremes. The Beach Boys. And so on.
We moved back to Glasgow the day England beat West Germany in the 1966 World Cup. Then soon after to Canada. (Those were Breadline Britain years in Glasgow.) Been here ever since, but the year in Dunoon has a fond place in my heart. Again, many thanks for posting.

Once the generation of sailors who served at site one are gone, who’ll visit this place? Most of the comments left on Dunoon vids are by US Navy personnel.

These videos are mostly targeted at sailors, but hopefully when I get used to making them, I can direct them at a wider audience. Thank you for watching!

Really useful video, thanks for posting. You might want to film more at 60fps for driving video's, even if you have to drop the resolution a bit 😉👍
