With The Game Awards nominees revealed, there is going to be so many different thoughts and reactions online where people are waiving their flags and logic around, but here I’ll be approaching this in a sense that gathers the collective’s opinions while also sharing my own personal hopes for these nominations. This is my reaction to the game award nominations for 2023!

Barely, the soundtrack in TotK is hardly memorable, Super Mario Bros Wonder is gonna win for sure.
@@calebproductions1264 wonder doesn’t have a masterpiece that I’ve found yet. Have you listened to all 20 minutes of colgera? Do yourself a favor and listen to the entire ost. It’s several hours, but is so worth it.

destiny 2 getting nominated for best community support is hot garbage considering Bungie just fired most of its community related employees.
also Lightfall is the worst annual expansion Bungie has ever made on top of the year of tons of terrible monetization decisions.

@TheSpeedfoever what redemption? you mean the increase in price to the battle pass from 1000 silver to 1200, which changes the payment from 10 dollar to 20 dollars.
or the monetization of endgame activities such as dungeons.
BG3 sweep incoming.
Some games do certain things better than BG3 but BG3 does everything so damn well.
Definitely the biggest contender for GOTY because of the above fact.
Here are some thoughts on the categories below:
Best Narrative: Alan Wake is a contender here.
Best multiplayer: BG3 does online coop across platforms and splitscreen couch coop.
Best Sound track: The game turns into a musical a certain points. An completely optional boss has his own Disney villian song that the VA personally sings. Hi Fi Rush is the only other contender here.
Best Community: Larian shaped the game with community feedback over the past 3 years of early access and continue to make patches and hotfixes. When there latest patch impacted sex speedrunners (yes, thats a thing), Larian added a workaround for that niche community in a few days.
Best Performance: Articles in mainstream newspapers are being written about Astarion and his character arc. When the Golden Joy Sticks Awards nominated 2 BG3 voice actors for performance of the year (which would definitely potentially split the BG3 vote), Astarion's VA ended up getting over 70% of the vote anyways.
Pikmin getting some respect
THE BABIES WERE LOVED! Family game was a no brainer, but I really did not hold hope for Strategy even tho it was easily possible!
Alan Wake 2 is best for "Visual effects" plus, seeing the "musical scene" was out of this world
I'm getting hyped as the date is nearing. The only category that I want to be removed is the On-going games. It's like the same nominees year after year.

I'm with you pal, it's not about winning but getting recognized (=getting nominated). Even if Alan Wake 2 didn't win any of the 8 categories it's still there among the best. But it is tough year to choose the winner, good for us gamers though
Exactly. The recognition to be considered "among the best" in something is always such a thrill to see to me. Especially in a year like this one.
Can a beta be game of the year? lol The Finals beta takes best shooter by a landslide for me. I cant stop thinking about it now that the beta is over....just noticed why is shooter not a category?
Best Indie for me was Dredge. LOVED IT! Just finished Cocoon and I enjoyed it but Dredge just hit the spot for me.
.....Also I'm totally with you about the whole Halo Infinite thing. The community has literally turned the game around with Forge.
Can you tell me a bit about your experience with Dredge? Cuz that's one I haven't heard of till now and that's dope you enjoyed it! Also yeah I didn't even think of "Shooter" missing till you said it. I can't remember when they got rid of that. BUT I'M SO STOKED FOR THE FINALS!!! IT WAS AWESOME
Solo FPS used to be a prized category with often CoD, Battlefield, Crysis and Id Softwares games battling for the award but since multiplayer became the only thing that matters, it would be redundant with the multiplayer category.
@@baiisun Even if it was multiplayer shooter. I would love that category too. I'm not a multiplayer hater, I just love shooters.
@@SamuraiKibiji Duuuuuuude Dredge has one of those loops that you cant stop. It is very much a creative gem as it's a Horror Fishing game. You fish by day managing a very addicting Resident evil esk inventory and then at night spooky stuff happens (Don't want to spoil anything). Once your boat is full you sell your catch and upgrade your boat with the money allowing you to venture safer at night and farther away from shore. This is turn progresses the story. The story is mysterious and good enough to keep you in but the gameplay loop is chefs kiss.

Putting Destiny 2 up for best community support made me audibly laugh out loud when I first saw this. Also, I agree whole heartedly that Halo Infinite should have been nominated, the new team at 343 has done an incredible turning that game around when we thought there was no hope left.
Zelda's a great game and all (tho personally not my kind of game), but I sure hope it won't be the case like GoW: Ragnarok last year where it just seemingly gobbled up almost every category for itself even if there were better nominees in the categories. It does kinda make these events a little less exciting to me where there's an obvious "nobrainer" because it's the most popular one. Give everyone else a chance, y'know?
See here's the thing is even tho Baldur's Gate 3 and TOTK got lots of noms, I don't think they win many of those when put against the competition for specifically the category they are in. Performance, Score, and Multiplayer are 3 categories I vastly doubt either of those 2 getting the win over others in that space BUT only time will tell.
@@SamuraiKibiji Ye, I'm still open for surprises, that's for sure. Also, still pretty happy to see Dredge being nominated in indie related categories tho! Probably my favorite indie title of 2023.
I'm admittedly a little sad Remnant 2 didn't get more love, but best action game is at least a very well deserved nomination.
The first was fantastic and the 2nd is even better.
VERY glad to see Hi-Fi Rush getting so much love. Got in the group of the 2nd or 3rd most nominations (can't remember which).
That said, BG3 sweep would not be unwarranted this year. That game absolutely KILLED it and sparked so much conversation and made people who don't even LIKE turn-based games enjoy the game.

Remnant 2 I think is alongside so many games that did great in 2023 (Hogwarts Legacy, Armored Core, Planet of Lana, etc) that just couldn’t be amazing on so many different fronts over others perhaps. You think something could have been swapped in multiplayer?

totk has an amazing soundtrack, the level of depth in it is insane. i think there are like 30 different versions of the main battle theme lol

Dude it barely had a soundtrack, most of the songs are from BotW, the only memorable song from TotK was the frozen version of Rito Village.

Sad, they did not add octopath traveler 2 in best Music, it was so amazing and epic.
I've been hearing some argue for its RPG potential. You think that to when looking at the 5 nominated instead?
@@SamuraiKibiji if you really listen to them and play the game... Like each character theme delivered so well and like literally telling thier stories not to mention the boss fights. Even the towns, maps day and night transitions like I would say one of the best music transition, if not the best. So I would say it is a strong candidate, could be even better than ff16 and I did play both.
Yuri should win but he has strong competition from Neil who is very memorable as Astarion to lot of ppl.
As much as I'm also rooting for Yuri, I hear the VA for Clive from FF16 nailed it and is the crowd favorite. We'll see tho
I totally agree with your opinion about StarField no being nominated. But about RE 4 in my opinion it's great idea because that way people like Take2 will learn and stop being lazy whn is come to remake
See the Take2 thing, those are more "remasters" than remakes which are still great to do now and then. This year we got 2 greats of those in Metroid Prime and Quake 2. But Take2 were ok with Rockstar publishing them lazy remasters.

I mentioned around the Accessibility area that a few categories got cut cuz I had literally nothing to say about it. So if I left them in then it'd just be empty space.

If it does.....I'll scream, but then again I'm not familiar enough with the other games so I'll have to do so a bit before hand.
@SamuraiKibiji Advance Wars is great and fun, Fire Emblem Engage had a weak story but exciting gameplay, Cities Skylines 2 is expansive but it had a lot of bugs on release. I never experienced Company of Heroes 3, but my friend who is a fan was not very enthusiastic about it. Pikmin 4 gets my vote!
So many choices! Haven't played most of them, but I think I'm gonna vote for Spider-Man 2 overall.
Also vote for Cyberpunk on any category, it deserves it. If I could I'd vote Phantom Liberty my game of the year.
I'm in the same spot in terms of how many played. I only know things based off the various gaming outlets I listen to impressions on stuff. We shall see tho. I'm gonna try to avoid the categories I feel like I'm not well aware of at least half the noms.
@SamuraiKibiji Fair enough. I still voted though based off little knowledge I might know or the company, art, gameplay.. Some categories I even voted if some of my friends liked a game I didn't play lol.
I would give Cyberpunk Best Expansion, but what else does it deserve?
@lurkingposter As much as I enjoyed Yuri's perfomance as Spider-Man, I gave my vote to Idris Alba. He was incredible and if I could I would have voted for Minji Chang because I thought she did even better. Everyone in Cyberpunk are such talented voice actors, they make the characters and world feel so much more real/alive. Especially V, the character you play as, personally I love female V more too.
@lurkingposter To be honest though, I was being bias through my voting and gave it to Cyberpunk in every category just because I think the game deserves all the credit.. especially since it can't get as much for its base game since it's failure at launch.. unfortunately..
But the sound fxs, music, designs throughout its world, especially when it comes to Black Wall, character models, story, the emotions its able to make you feel, the emotions everyone is able to portray, especially Song Bird.. Phantom Liberty is just an incredible addition to the base Cyberpunk 2077.

Forza Horizon came out in 2021. If you mean Forza Motorsport that was in the Sports/Racing category which I didn't include here since I had nothing to say about it.
@@SamuraiKibiji My point is, if this is about critics or scores, why wasn't Forza Horizon included in the game of the year, that year? People were talking about how a racing game cannot be game of the year. Are we telling channels with millions of followers that only focus on racing games or the 30 million that played Forza Horizon that the game they love is not really a game? This game award thing is very flawed, what new did RE4 bring to the table, better graphics?
Ah yes, this I agree with. The genre of the game should not dictate what can be nominated for GOTY or other categories. This debate was 2 years ago along with a year Flight Sim got 10/10's left and right the year before, but maybe those games just weren't on submitters minds enough because of their specific genres.

But I thought games are selected by scores and critic's not personal bias.
I'd say there's a difference between taste and bias. Bias means feeling emotionally obligated to sway one way. Taste is having preference in something. They co mingle a lot, but yes someone's tastes can impact what that individual favors or believes is best. I recently listened to Kinda Funny react to the noms where they explained how they submitted for this where they all collectively submitted their 5 for the category to their boss (Greg) and which ever 5 had the most votes is the ones they'd submit for their nominees for this. I'd imagine every media outlet has a similar method. At the end of the day this is all done by people and their opinions rather than an agenda to fulfill....but if one wants to disagree or try to sway it to some other way of saying this then all good, but I got nothing further to add than some like chicken more than beef.
Love the GOTY category and my pick will be Zelda since i have played it the most this year. However MY complaint for best music, SF6 should have been there too my god its a banger! But im also happy that Hi Fi Rush got it though it deserves it! Also happy for mario too hope it wins some!
OKAY...I'm totally hearting this cuz I COMPLETELY FORGOT that Street Fighter 6 has an absolutely BANGIN soundtrack!

I’m in agreement on FF16 based on everything I’ve seen/heard...and yet can just “understand” why RE4 is there...I don’t think I would have put it myself basically.

Boulders Gate 3 has been out for a couple ofbyears how can it be game of the year?
It was in Early Access the past couple years while the devs were building it, never completely released or completed till this year where it officially launched as a full title. Maybe they should make a new category like "Best Early Tests" or something like Infinite's Flights, The Finals Beta, and Grounded's Early Access...
i mean Resident Evil didn't deserve that place it should have been a new good game
In a year like this...I'm kinda in agreement. I can really see both sides, but specifically in a year like this where there was so much else to choose from, if I was nominating I don't think I would have chosen it for more subjective reasons.

Based on Metacritic score,it would make relatively low amount of sense if Starfield was nominated.
Especially User Score taken into account.

Nearly all Game of The Year category games have well above 8 User Score and one above 9.
Despite the very LOUD minority bashing Spiderman 2, the fact is it has highest User Score.
Not by very much, but it does.
It is likely to best Baldurs Gate 3 by User Vote,but maybe not.
Jury vote,Spiderman 2 doesn't stand a chance.

This is the debate. I really can see either side cuz Remakes built from the ground up are impressive but unless it’s like a full blown reimagining like FF7 was then...idk it’s tough
I think Baldur’s Gate 3 will win it all. That’s just a prediction not a hope/want. Lol
For me the only "lock" for Baldur's Gate 3 is RPG. Everything else it has something that might have done that particular thing better. For instance Performance? Yeah the others there are very comparable. Narrative? Alan Wake 2 is a strong contender there.

7 remake is more critically acclaimed than 16.

I’m not able to do that if I honestly don’t feel it deserves it over something else for “that specific thing”. And I’m saying this as someone that has it as one of his favorite games this year.
Art Direction is the one I might say it deserves it over others and vote on that. Maybe Action game as well but ONLY cuz FF16 isn’t there.

Now that I think about it yeah...not one category. That unfortunately is just cuz of the competition this year tho. I think if it had a chance in anything then mayyybbeee action/adventure, but that category had easily 9 or 10 to strongly consider over it. In another year maybe, but not this year.
I honestly think it’s cause of the controversy from doxxing streamers making vtubers cry and even forcing one to quit I’m sure the game awards wanna stay away from that
Just wanna clarify, the people that run The Game Awards have absolutely no control what's so ever what's nominated. It's entirely based on the collective submissions that they got from the various journalists/media/influencers/channels they reach out to.
Yea same. I know it wouldn't have won GOTY, but at least one category or be mentioned. I really enjoyed it.
Maybe art direction, the game for me felt incredibly safe

I think I agree
I was pretty satisfied with the Nominees, although I think that Starfield was heavily snubbed (it could have easily fit in the Score, Audio, Action Adventure, and Direction categories but was not it any). It was really cool to see games like HiFi rush and Phantom Liberty get the attention they deserve, which is great looking forward. I do think that games like TOTK were in a lot of categories that were unwarranted (like score, best direction), but I'm definitely not surprised. I agree with you on the RE4 standpoint, as I think that the Game of the Year (emphasis on year) should go to games that really shape and evolve the gaming industry and formula, and putting a remake over so many other games just doesn't really make sense.
Ultimately, I think we should all take the Game Awards for what it is, and that is more of a media and press showcase rather than a award show for games.
I almost feel like Geoff Keighley took the top 6 highest reviewed games and threw them into the GOTY list without much thought, and as most people know, the gaming review process is absolutely broken to its core.
Zelda's score is incredible. Especially during the finale
Although i really loved Final Fantay XVI, it does not belong in best narrative. In my opinion.
okay let me give you my personal opinions on the nominees that were chosen
Alan Wake 2: but I know it was one of the most anticipated sequels and pretty good despite some flaws a bit
Baldur's gate 3: quite obvious who was going to show up here
Marvel Spider-Man 2: also an obvious choice
Resident Evil 4 remake: I would say bit of a weird choice
Super Mario Bros. Wonder: I'm going to look as much as Mario as an iconic brand recognition of a franchise but but I don't feel like they're ready for nominee me with Wonder
and obviously tears of the Kingdom: an obvious choice
overall I would say for the most part is good but I feel like Starfield should have been a nominee for best game of the year and I feel they are kind of robbed for not showing up in any of the game of the year nominees
Thanks Chang! Starfield is gonna be something many debate I'm sure. It's one of those things where it'd be a bit surprising seeing something with mostly 8/10 scores get put along side a bunch of 9's and 10's is the best way I simplify it, but totally see others thinking in a different perspective.
Starfield shouldn’t be nominated for GOTY. It was overhyped and delivered a mediocre experience with a dated design and bad performance on pc.
Sorry but as a (former) Bethesda lover, I’m glad they didn’t get nominated and hope they don’t win the RPG nomination either since the RPG elements are so shallow compared with say a BG3.
Best score nomination I would have been ok with, more than RPG
It’s high time Bethesda up their game because if this is the quality they deliver for ES6 I’ll be extremely disappointed

To be honest it's the only is only nominated so let it win and I don't want BG3 already had enough nominations
Plus I think starfield a much better nominee than super Mario bros Wonder and resident evil 4 remake for game of the year to be honest

Starfield didnt review well because of media bias an as an Xbox fan that should be obvious
The criticisms in many reviews on it I'd personally agree with and can see after playing it (Cumbersome UI, amount of loading screens, lack of special feeling exploration compared to previous Bethesda RPG's, occasional writing). Still a good to great game, just with obvious hindrances that other games did not have in comparison.
Starfield received 10s across the board and ign got blasted for giving it a 7. After people played it, users found out that ign was correct: game was extremely mid. Gtfo with your "bias" narrative.
While I completely agree that this "bias" narrative is just that, a "narrative", I also have to comment on "Across the board"...I can't really say I disagree since this actually can be disproven objectively if we look into Gamespot, PC Gamer, Digital Trends, Easy Allies, Eurogamer, so on and so forth...
@@SamuraiKibiji load screens don't determine a game metacritic if so those games that came before Xbox series x and PS5 should all have points taken away
The same outlets that state they didn't get an early review copy of Starfield and they don't see themselves giving it anything higher than a 6, then proceed to give it a 6 before completing are the same minds that judge the VGAs

I’m glad to see Starfield not get nominated for GOTY. It doesn’t deserve it whatsoever. This means Xbox hasn’t had a TGA nomination for 10 years in a row.
Agreed on Starfield not deserving it, more specifically deserving it over others. Also Psychonauts 2 was released under the Xbox Games Studios banner in 2021 and nominated for GOTY.
@@SamuraiKibiji Psychonauts 2 was only published by Xbox. Xbox didn’t have any hand in developing the game as it was already in its beta phase and was planned for a mid-summer 2019 release as they were running low on funds. They delayed the game for two years for added polish and adding in some boss fights after they were purchased. The only addition from the delay was the boss fights which the devs did themselves and not the Xbox team.
If that’s the case then I’d also say Hi Fi Rush, Redfall and Starfield were not eligible this year under that standard. That’d mean a Xbox game is probably not an Xbox game till it’s from a studio at least 3 years after being bought.
I’m split on this. I was also going to call out Outer Worlds in 2019, but that game had a different publisher while the studio was bought by Xbox that year so didn’t mention it since it’s tricky.
Personally I put Psychonauts 2 as a game under Xbox equally as much as the Bethesda games this year.
Glad to see HiFi Rush get plenty of love. It's a shame RE4 is there for GOTY. But it really doesn't matter. It's a biased show of what the media likes and not what the gamers want.
I'd say if one only wants the average joe gamer's opinions then Golden Joysticks is that, if one wants purely critic choices then perhaps the DICE Awards, and then The Game Awards are more collective gathering critics/journalists/influencers opinions while letting the public have a portion of the votes. There's an award show for everyone out there.

@@SamuraiKibiji all GOTY nominations were sequels/remakes for the most part. We may disagree. It seems as though our current generation’s creativity and skill set is sub par, same with music and movies. Just my opinion. I also believe the bias towards names like PlayStation and Nintendo should only go so far.
The area I do agree on in this front is putting that love for innovation in the Game Direction category better than they did. TOTK deserved it with how they really let the player cut loose, Baldur's Gate for showing what a game can really be with proper care put into it by what is technically an indie team, but the rest not really stuff that smaller games did like Cocoon or Viewfinder did in terms of innovative game design.
I played three games: Spider man 1 Morales and 2 within a month, i can understand why IGN and GS give it 8/10. I even don't think it can be nominated.
HiFi Rush got 9/10 from IGN and GS. Even 10/10 from ign JAPAN and NME . Just like fresh air, there is no excessive promotion, Just a profect fusion of creativity and pop culture elements. Let us know all the joy that video games can bring.

Lol...the credibility of this Awards show has gone the way of modern reviews. Totally irrelevant.
It depends. If one values the people's voices more than the media's then yes it's irrelevant and The Golden Joystick Awards is more for that audience since it's entirely voted on by anyone/everyone. The Game Awards is more about the industry/journalist/critics collectively choosing their best of the year and also accounting the audience as 10% of the votes as well so it's the most collective.
Starfield never was nominated even though it could have beaten Zelda and Spider-Man 2

Whose surprised? Me? Nope. During the Game of the Year part I didn't bring up any shock about Xbox, just Mario and RE4. Not sure about the source of this.
That said this isn't about who "wins", this is about nominations. The last time Xbox got GOTY noms specifically was 2021

I'm really on the fence about it. I really can see both sides of that debate cuz it is a fantastic remake built from the ground up...but choosing it over so many other great completely new games this year is just very...idk if I could have done that if I was submitting.

They were reviewed incredibly well and were all around great packages. Usually the games with the least criticism get into here, and these were the six most well reviewed games this year...other than maybe 3 others
