      After 50 hours minute mark a clock starts ticking which counts down the time towards full understanding of a simple fact that the game is as wide as an ocean, as deep as a puddle. Doesn't mean that its bad, it just means that it has nothing to offer past a certain point, unless you enjoy.. grinding or exploring just for the sake of it. That or just base building in general. The stuff that people build over this game is insane.

      While they deserve credit for not totally abandoning the game. I think many people latched onto that narrative and ran away with it. The fact is that the game remains shallow and deeply flawed. The world generation is great, it was at launch, it remains so, it's the core feature. Outside of that though, you could see everything in a few hours. Quests have very little variety and are mostly comprised of go here, talk to this guy, go there scan that, etc. The economic system in game is shallow and easily exploited. Base building is it's own separate thing with no real purpose. The story quests are highly repetitive, reusing the same assets over and over again. Combat progression exists via various mods and weapons and such, but is pointless. You're exposed to all the hardest enemies in the game immediately, which you can also therefore defeat immediately, quite easily actually. So the progression is there... for what? There's nothing to fight. Again, while the planet generation and variety is great, *everything else* is not, there are what... 3 station models? In the whole multiverse of the game? Sentinels and other factions reuse the same few buildings constantly everywhere and in exactly the same way. Ships have some randomly changing looks but little real variety. The end game for most people winds up being just looking up seeds and waiting around in stations for the ships you want to show up.
      I didn't play it at launch, I watched the controversy and decided against giving it a try. Last year I picked it up since there seemed to be agreement that it was now worth peoples time. As a 5ish hour fun little visual experience... sure, maybe... but it was that at launch as well. The gameplay though is just a series of unrelated activities with no depth or variety. I don't personally see that anything has really changed substantively to be honest, it's a mess.
      I think people have been so abused by the AAA game industry in the last decade or so that any time a company *doesn't* shit on your face they think it must be the second coming of Christ and lose all objectivity.

    • @TheAlphaDingo

      @@entelin cheers for the insights, I'm yet to play it myself but it's on the backlog radar for games I'd like to try when I can find the time. Yes, my impression from the gameplay I've seen is that it's perhaps a bit sandbox-y and maybe hence is not overly deep with it's mechanics or gameplay - though I'm impressed with the seemingly broad range of different things you can do (that seems ever growing with each update).
      My original comment was more inline with your last paragraph about the state of AAA gaming and the constantly diluted games we get these days that are stripped of features and beat you over the head with paid DLC, season passes and shallow 'improvements' (if they are an annual release game). The fact a small development team can continually update and push out content for their game (after it's less than ideal debut and fall from grace) is a genuine rare breath of fresh air (which is where my admiration and desire to try the game out come from). Most other studios or publishers would take the pre order and day 1 sales money, maybe do a few half baked updates or DLC packs and move onto the next money maker project. To the No Man Skies devs (my perception from the outside looking in), it seems to be a genuine passion project for these devs and for that, I can only tip my proverbial hat in praise and recognition.

      @@entelinThis very much sounds like the type of comment I see on Steam from people who haven't played the game past the first 2-3 hours or that have vicariously experienced the game through CZcams videos. The game has a tonne of customisation, there are many MANY systems for automation. You have incentives to explore. There are handcrafted events and experiences outside of the core loop. There is also just a lot of content once you get the hang of the basics, and a lot to strive towards thanks to that.
      No Man's Sky has become a sandbox like Minecraft, you have to take its systems and find your own end goal through it, and it WILL reward you materially for doing so (unlike Minecraft where it's mostly just for the sake of self-gratification).

    • @entelin
      @entelin Před 8 měsíci +2

      @@Dynamo33 I played the game all the way through. Saw some pretty sweet bases, built my own, made a factory, got a freighter (which funny enough was the largest/best one first shot). Went to some other iterations as well. Minecraft has it's limitations but it does have progression in the base game, mods are really what has kept mc alive though. But I stand by everything I said, you said it yourself, it's mostly a sandbox. There is no real progression, it has activities, but pretty quickly you aren't really working towards any real goal, especially in the combat department. A lot of systems are there, but they are all dead ends, and most have no relevance to any other part of the game.

Also, small tip, build it next to a place with a launching pad and a galactic trade terminal. That way, you don't expand fuel when you take off and you can trade without having to teleport or fly to a space station.

It's just more of your typical bethesda RPG and no mans sky seems to be more of a sandbox type. That beeing said watching how you can just lift off with your ship, cruise around the planet and jump to other planets seems really really fun. Compare that to the absolute boring "jumping around using the starmap and watching cutscenes" travel mechanic in Starfield, I get how people could be dissapointed when comparing it to no mans sky. I just did a quick read of this game's Wikipedia page. It's commendable how Hello Games learned from their mistakes and totally changed their PR strategy after the disastrous launch. They correctly identified over-hype as the problem that created most of the backlash, so every update since then has received little to no press before its release. They put their heads down, develop the update, and don't show something unless they actually have something to show. The results, I think, speak for themselves.

At this point, pretty much all their promises with the game at launch have been fulfilled and then some, they're doing it for their own fun at this point. SO VERY NOT RECOMMENDED unless you know what you're doing, though. Turning the tutorial off in the custom options will just literally stick you on a planet with some basic starter stuff (some of which you'd normally learn through tutorials), and the game tells you jack-all about what to actually do. So please, please don't do this if this is your first time or if you hadn't played in years. Without the tutorial, the game is rather confusing and difficult to learn, and there's plenty of people on Steam Discussions asking inane questions because they either skipped the tutorial or didn't read the little messages it pops up explaining how things work and then they get mad at the game because they couldn't be bothered to actually learn it. NMS is not hard to play, but it DOES ask you to pay attention the first time through so it can teach you how it works. It's intuitive once you get to know it, it feels natural... but without the tutorial to guide you, you're probably going to feel so lost and/or end up doing everything the hard way.

Multiplayer is fairly new to the game, and I can only imagine the headache of not only AI-powering spawning but then putting that in a multiplayer server-side vs client-side context.

      NMS most strongly reminds me of the first few chapters of the first Robot City book. It spends a fair bit of time with the main character exploring the mining base with only himself, a slowly depleting oxygen pack, and a base managed only by robots. It gives a feeling of being alone but not in the sense of being lonely...just a silent reverent exploration. That part of the series stuck with me the most, and NMS *excels* at recreating that feeling especially early on when you're just getting used to it.

      Lots of people (including the guy making this video) bash the tutorial, but really. The tutorial literally walks you through most of basic concepts behind the game, and if you pay attention, you shouldn't feel lost at all. It's when players get in a hurry (like the guy making this video did with the base) is when players miss things. Read all the little popup messages and just do as it asks for the first couple hours. _It's not that bad_ and you'll be on your way before you know it. You can have as many bases as you want, building one on your first planet isn't going to hurt you, in fact, it is probably beneficial to do so because every planet type has a unique resource on it and being able to teleport to whatever kind of planet you started on is a good thing because you will probably eventually want the resources on that planet. Rather than going "shoot, I need a planet that has dioxite (or whatever other resource) on now...", you can just teleport to that starter base you built that was on a planet that featured those resources. In fact, I like to drop little huts with teleporters on one of each planet type so when I need a specific resource, I can teleport to somewhere that has said resource immediately.
