The oven pie looked the best, hopefully there will be instructions on all packaging for airfryers soon so we have a better idea on cooking times. Good experiment Gareth !
My dad had a English cafe' serving English food to workmen. It was phenomenally successful back in the 60s and 70s. His secret was he used fresh everything and in quantity and made his own pies to a very high standard filling them with meat and gravy. He had a special machine that looked like a 1950s space rocket with lots of shelves where he placed the pies to cooking. I remember he charged 11p for a cup of tea which is about 40p today.
The oven one was definitely the best, but the air fryer one wasn't bad. I think it's like other people have said about turning them over so the underside gets cooked.
I always cook pies and sausage rolls in the oven, but I use a mini oven instead of the main oven. It heats up far quicker and uses less electricity in total.
@@jennigee51I got a small ninja air fryer and it's not bad. Cooks things way faster than a normal oven or a countertop one and gets at least as good results or better. Only thing that's faster is a microwave but it's only good to pre thaw in my opinion so the air fryer finishes it off really quick
It’s the science Gareth, the science! I love these experiments and watching to see how they turn out. Hi Gareth, just a note. If your microwave is of less wattage than instructed on the packaging, then you would need to increase the time slightly and not decrease it. However, it turned out ok. Happy pies.
Hello Gareth, I cook pies in my halogen oven on the low rack. I cook my bacon on the high rack, all the fat goes into the bottom of the bowl and it makes my bacon nice and crispy, just how I like it.
Really enjoy your video’s very informative and entertaining 😂. Just one point to note, your microwave is 800W therefore you should have given the pie longer to cook not less time than an 850 W for 3mins 👍
I grew up in South Wales, and I loved the way our Italian-run cafés cooked their meat pies - with a special nozzle attached to the coffee machine and the other end stuck into a hole cut in the pie-crust. They'd use the steam to cook the pies "inside-out" for several minutes, until the filling was piping hot and the pie-case moist and soft. The result was almost like a suet pudding, but without using suet pastry. Delicious!
I'm from Carlisle and i have to say your videos are a bit of a guilty pleasure. My mum asked what i was watching and i said just some bald guy from Barrow eating pies. Bit weird but class content. Used to play sports tornements down in Barrow with my school.

Thanks Gareth great review mate. I love steak and kidney my favourite pie , never tried Hollands , Don’t do them where I live , Fleur de lys pies and Pukka are the popular brands. What you can do is do the pie in the microwave for 2-3 minutes, then transfer it to a hot oven for 10 minutes, and that will produce a pie that is not soggy and be like an oven cooked one, cooked in total time 13-14 minutes instead of the full oven time of 30 minutes. That’s half the time of oven cooked only, if you’re desperate to eat and want a quality cooked pie.

Never cooked a pie in the microwave, not a lover of soft pastry. I only ever go for an oven pie. This was an interesting watch though and I think the good old oven won on the day. G treat review though!💕🤩👍
Hi Gareth. Another great video, but you made a mistake on the microwave time! 3minutes for 850W would be 3m12s for 800W not 2m45s... Not sure if an extra 27s would have made the pastry any less soggy but it might have done? Maybe you can try again with the 4th pie?
You are correct yes it was in for 3 mins in the end, so only a few seconds off the time. Well spotted Graham, i sometimes make a few mistakes. Apologies.
Brown sauce not bad but you should really try pie with hendersons relish from Sheffield, it's like Worcester sauce but better Gareth I was brought up on it mate
Interesting experiment as well. Microwave might be more convenient, but is it worth putting the oven on just for a pie ? Probably need to throw some other stuff in there while you were at it.

Finally got some of those Asda plates Gareth. Funny thing, on the Asda website someone has put a comment saying they got those plates because of you. Hope your on commission.
Buy yourself a pie maker. You can get one for about £15. You can then make your own pies and use your own ingredients. Check out videos on CZcams reviewing pie makers. They are quick and simple to use. I wouldn’t eat those pies you show on this video. Also I have read that habitually eating microwaved food can lead to stomach cancer. Thanks for your videos.
Microwave is a no-brainer. 3 mins at 850 watts, compared to the oven which is 30 mins at 2400 watts. Probably 30 times more expensive on the Leccy bill to use the oven.
I find microwaved food goes colder quicker. I reheated a xmas lunch i did not finish. The sprouts done in a micro had me in pain, on my hands and knees. No more micro for us. Air fryers every time, a lot quicker.
I do in microwave and have plate under grill , don't like cold plates lol ,then I put pastie or pie under grill for few mins after microwave. I'm getting air fryer so I'll start in micro and then Pop in air to crisp up
Offal I think was our Grand parents era main meat until the fifties, and was dying out in my parents era as they had more money. Brawn salad anyone. Pig trotters and parts of the head like the cheeks, and onions in jelly, normally made on a Saturday whilst Grandad was at the Pub and match, to be eaten on Sunday afternoon. The Butcher might chuck in some extra crumbs from under the slicing machine if he knew you was skint, or had a massive family. Saturday afternoon the skull would be picked over after being boiled and the main bits cut off. I just mentioned Kidney to my two and I got a Biology lesson and a mistaken reason for not eating it. The Lady who lifted me out of my homeless days was making stuffed hearts with mash and a rich gravy for tea, and had just nipped out for some Browning. How could I refuse. When you haven't eaten for days and your living outdoors, home cooked grub with a family, even if it's offal, can be life changing. Hollands pies were bigger in 1964 and had less gravy in. As energy bills go through the roof due to profiteering , the best cooking tool will be too costly by order of the Government, forcing us to cut our usage and meet their criminal targets. If there is global warming surely our heating usage was going down? Poverty kills just as much as crap food and stress and the cold. Population reduction by any means the document said, and you can take your pick of all the methods used today. Will the gender fluid folk be as productive I wonder, or is it a really sly tool. The eugenics amongst us, hate us. Isn't it odd how our leaders in the west are all infiltrators of the WEF, what's the odds of them all being elected at the same time right across the globe.

My Pork Play List! Bet a few years ago you'd never have imagined saying these words on CZcams to thousands of people 😁
Hi gaz,me and shaz have a strict vegan diet monday to friday..then we eat whatever we fancy at weekends!..usually what u have reviewed in the week!..🤣👍..it keeps our wieght down and keeps us healthy but weekends are so special..gaz and shaz..spot on..👍👍
Great idea, cheers both, spot on 😋😋👌👌
Great Review Video 📹 BFG ..👍 And Think Like You We Allways Had Pukka Pies 🥧 In The Local Chippys ..But I'm Definitely Going To Give Hollands Pies 🥧 A Proper Go Next Time ⏲ I See Them They Did Look Tasty ....Happy Days 🙂
cheers David, hope you enjoy the Hollands pies. All the best.
I never put pastry anywhere near the Microwave as it always goes soggy, oven would be my choice mostly, but air frying I use the basket rather than the rack, nice looking pies them 👍
cheers mate.
Never cooked a pie in the microwave, not a lover of soft pastry. I only ever go for an oven pie. This was an interesting watch though and I think the good old oven won on the day. G treat review though!💕🤩👍
Glad you enjoyed it xx
Pooles pie of Wigan were the best till they went bust during lockdown they were the best I ever found
thats a shame pal
Apologies.
Brown sauce not bad but you should really try pie with hendersons relish from Sheffield, it's like Worcester sauce but better Gareth I was brought up on it mate
yes ive got some in the fridge was gifted to me. cheers.
Try cooking pies 🥧 etc in microwave on defrost, takes much longer but dose help stop pastry going soft
thanks Patrick.
Sag loo in asda lovely just had it Gareth x
thanks 😊
I liked the bettys hotpot ones..what no hp sauce.gareth.😀🙋♂️..👍👍
yes had it after filmed mate.
Omg I absolutely love hollands pies especially baby's head (Holland steak n kidney pudding).always have these in me freezer
Sounds great!
I bought a pack of the Hollands Snake and Pigmy puddings from Tesco, and thought them quite good and tasty.
tasty arnt they David.
I like Microwave pies as here down south all the Fish and Chip shops always microwave the pies so am used to it like that
cheers Christine, hope your well.
@@BaldFoodieGuy Thanks Gaz I'm good 😎👌
When using the air for pies mate take the pie out of the tin turn the pie over and rest on the pie tin.
Cook for 22 mins
Thank me later.
Spot on
cheers Neil, good tip.
Interesting experiment as well. Microwave might be more convenient, but is it worth putting the oven on just for a pie ? Probably need to throw some other stuff in there while you were at it.
Thanks pal
I've just watched this episode, I think those things should be kept for the oven, you can't really go wrong
cheers pal, yes definitely 👍
OK I will send selections in the morning before racing, can i ask you not to spread this information to much, prices won't be the best, but I do have quite a few winners overall, can anyone else see this page if I sent this way

Do taste good tho ,
Yummy yummy 😋
Look forward to seeing it Gareth 😂😂
haha thought id nailed it yes the puddings mate. Thanks 😊
Also my dad used to drench his pies in that Daddies brown sauce back in the 90s that was all the rage lol
"In an ideal world, we'd all be running around naked eating off the fat of the land"
Priceless!!
To all readers with lecky going thru the roof no one in there right mind will use a full oven for 30 min for 1 pie .
It’s gonna be the microwave at 3/3.5 min
An as most have found out chops batt fish bangers pies chips etc in the airF
Ovens are for big joints etc .
My daughter got 4 A fryers lol so well off an only uses them lol
good tip Jim.
🏴👏 I love this review I’ve got 2 air fryers a Ninja and a tower. Ninja every time for chips and chicken wings and the tower for my fish , burgers & pies 👏🏴
thanks Mark, now your showing off lol
Holland's are bring out some new pies next week. They look more gourmet. There's a steak and gravy, also a chicken and gravy. Think they're frozen not sure. They're in black boxes
Cheers Matt will have a look thanks 😊
Can't beat a good pie.
i did recommend flipping the air fryer pie after you did the rib pies
sorry yes a few comments saying flip them over i was following the advice from John.
Ur rite Gareth this is cheap easy convenient food I like it and if you ain't got a lot of money and a few bairns to feed nowt wrong pith it with a bit of mash n a few veg
Cheers Kirstie spot on 👍👍
It's the oven for me Gaz👍😋😉🏆
Nice one
Finally got some of those Asda plates Gareth. Funny thing, on the Asda website someone has put a comment saying they got those plates because of you. Hope your on commission.
haha really i didnt know, no im not on commission. Great you got them mate.
Love soggy pastry…
Just hate gravy and wished they were in Vindaloo sauce instead👍😋
Microwave is a no-brainer. 3 mins at 850 watts, compared to the oven which is 30 mins at 2400 watts. Probably 30 times more expensive on the Leccy bill to use the oven.
yes absolutely cheaper mate.
I'm going to try that as my pies come out shite in air fryer
I find microwaved food goes colder quicker. I reheated a xmas lunch i did not finish. The sprouts done in a micro had me in pain, on my hands and knees. No more micro for us. Air fryers every time, a lot quicker.
cheers Colin, yes soon cools down.
Got to say they our the best Holland pies
Love the Holland's pies, whole range of them are good .I do prefer them cooked in microwave though .let them sit for 10 mins a pasty does firm up 👍👍
Good tip!
@@BaldFoodieGuy an even after 10 minutes there still to hot to eat 😃
How long to cook holland cheese and onion pie from frozen in air fryer and what temp cheers excellent videos keep em coming mate🤤🤤🤤
Will do
I do in microwave and have plate under grill , don't like cold plates lol ,then I put pastie or pie under grill for few mins after microwave. I'm getting air fryer so I'll start in micro and then Pop in air to crisp up
Thank you, enjoy the air fryer.
Isn't it odd how our leaders in the west are all infiltrators of the WEF, what's the odds of them all being elected at the same time right across the globe.
cheers Spex quite moving mate about you being homeless. Thanks mate, go steady.
As long as it states “sustainably sourced palm oil” that’s ok.
cheers for the information Jenni
