“This is that”, and that is brilliant Gareth! What a difference in price especially if you’re on a budget. This is my kind of review. Put any of them on a roll with brown sauce, wouldn’t be able to taste the difference between them. Invaluable review pal, well done!
You’ve properly changed the ways I shop for food and it’s so helpful as I’m a single man who’s just moved out and it’s a great help with these comparison videos!! Thanks 👍🏻
If they were cooked in the airfryer I think they would probably looked better. And as the price is especially important to people with young ones I think this is a really good review 👏 thankyou 😍
You're reviews are opening up my eyes to food, I used to buy the most expensive but not anymore. I'd buy the American fries over any you've just sampled now, I much prefer to buy a 5lb bag of potatoes for around £1.15 and make my own, that works out much cheaper in the long run. You can get far more bang for your buck.
A first comment from me is that I find all McCain chips or potatoes are to dry for me. Another good food comparisons video Gareth and keep up with the good work. I look at your videos every night.
Glad it’s not just my oven that doesn’t do the job in anywhere near to the time the packaging says! For any sort of chips, wedges etc I always find to get them crisp in the oven takes near enough twice as long as the package says
I always do them for 20 mins at 175 turn them over and then Wack it up to 220 for ten mins and it always seems to cook them through but have them nice and brown on edges
I know you had to do them in the oven for the review, but honestly Gaz, the McCain french fries cooked in the air fryer for about 15 minutes are spot on, as long as you eat them straight away as they cool off quick, try with burger sauce aswell, lovely! Our other favourite oven chips are the homestyle chips in a light crisp batter from M&S they are £1.50 for a 1KG pack, give them a try mate?👍
I’ve had all three of these but fried, taste wise it does goes in order of price as expected. But on a budget, slap them on some bread with salt and vinegar and you won’t taste loads of difference done in the oven.
I do us a deep fat fryer with these product foe the best results… Tip: sometimes I use the deep fat fryer on leftover chips from the fish and chip shop,it works a treat.
Skinny chips get cold too quickly. Last time I went to Farm Foods was October last year (it's 26 miles away), I bought a big yellow bag of McCain 'Chips For FRYING' 1.2kg for £1.00. 97.6% potatoes and 2.4% sunflower oil. They say they're Thick cut. They crisped up perfectly whilst being fluffy in the middle. Proper instructions for both deep and air frying. I'm hoping they still do them next time I'm able to get there.
Home made even better with some Chinese salt pepper mix, bag of spuds with a little chipping work as sack of spuds works out cheaper in long run for someone on a budget.
M&S French Fries (frozen) are the best I have had - easily beat the McCains and come up perfect in the air fryer without any additional oil. They are nice and crispy. Their fresh ones are even better but probably not worth the extra cash.
I get the Iceland Straight Cut Value Fry Chips for £1 for 1.5kg. These are produced in Belgium where some of the best chips in the world come from. Until I got the air fryer I pan-fried them in sunflower oil and they are really great chips. Recently I have found the Iceland crinkle cut chips (£1 for 1.25kg) work really well in the air fryer. But my favourite chips are home made, cut from fresh peeled potatoes, soaked for an hour in cold water to remove starch, patted dry, then fried in the air fryer.
I'd probably choose the cheapies as I am a tight wad - BUT - I always spray mine - regardless of brand - with that butter flavoured frying oil and/or a flavoured olive oil depending on what we're eating with the chips and pre-season with spices and sometimes a sprinkling of gravy powder before cooking - probably adjust cooking time to higher/longer to get the crisp on - great review - thanks
I do my own chips in the air fryer now, thanks to you Gareth, after getting one, from seeing your videos. Couple of potatoes, cut up, rub in bit of olive oil and salt and pepper. Smashing!😁
Having lived in two chip shops for a few years, one in a mill town nr Oswaldtwistle, one in Blackpool, oven cooked chips are nothing like a proper chip at all. Twice cooked in Beef dripping, yummy.
Good review.Although i avoid deep frying ,slim fries only seem to work that way.In the oven they either come out floppy like spaghetti or hard like burnt matches.
Great video as always. 👍 I’ve found even the cheapest frozen fries can taste decent enough if done in the air fryer - just seems to add that extra bit of crispness to them then a bit of seasoning and they’re decent enough.
I wholeheartedly agree with what you're saying Gareth, frozen chips are all much of a muchness, the big game changer is the air fryer, which turns something which was always an anaemic soggy mess into something crispy and delicious. Another great review mate 👍

Hi I have started to lower the temprature a little and leave them longer when doing my local cheap oven chips and toss them several times they turn out much better.
Gareth as always another brilliant review, as with your recent Bean off, it shows that you are paying for the name, if your daft enough to pay that price go for it , but if on limited income you look to survive on what you have ! P.S Can you do a Spud Waffle off, currently paying 0.85p for a pack of 12 from Lidl, i know that you don't have a Lidl locally but would be handy All the best bud 👍
The reason the cheaper ones took longer to brown is because they dont have sugar added, like the other two. I dont want sugar on my chips, so it will be the cheapest for me!
Let's face it fries is an imported name for our chips. A proper chip is chunky and I like the ones you get in lidl because they have been cooked using beef dripping which is how all chips used to be done and you cannot beat the taste.
Another honest review Gareth, you don't always have to get a named brand to enjoy it. As you pointed out when you add sauces of your choice, could anyone tell the difference between them. 👍
Great review Gareth 👌 Massive difference with the price on these 3 too! ive tried those American fries before and thought as fries go they were nice enough, I did mine in the air fryer tho which I think does seem to cook them a bit better, and tbh I’ve always thought McCain stuff is over rated anyways! And if you do want ones with extra spices on just add some of your own, garlic granules (49p from Aldi) is really nice on them 😋
Iceland generally sell two bags of McCains for £4 You can chose fries or chips or one packet of each. We`ve tried Lidls , Aldis , Asda and a few other own brands but our kids will only eat McCains. The cheap brands we`ve found have lots of ``shavings`` or tiny bits of potato in the bag.
Well Done BFG And Your 100% Correct on This One Your Basically Paying For The Mc Cain Name Not The Product Or The Potatoes Same Thing Just In A Different Bag ..🤔 Happy Days 🙂
My fries of choice are the McCains Quick-Cook 5 minute fries, usually get them from Iceland and I have to say they taste better and often crispier than most other oven fries!
Hearty Foods Straight Cut Chips from Tesco are absolutely delicious, done in the air fryer. Currently 90p for 1.5 kilos. Great vid, as usual, Gareth. 👏👍
No brainer for family's on budget 79p ones biggest bag, Mcains have a lot of rubbish on!! Chips should be potatoes cooked in oil simple as that . Great review.
Bought the 79pence ones last week.. well pleased with them..did them in the air fryer..for a quick chip butty they are perfect...and cheaper than a large bag of crisps..👍
I always deep fry the mcain ones take 5 mins taste 100 percent nicer fried in sunflower oil . They always on offer most the time in Tesco for the family bag full
Eh up Gazza hows tha doin. Great video. Cant believe the prices difference between cheapest and dearest. I would probably go for the american fries. You know what the say about fries ? They are a "chip" off the old block. Have you ever seen the McCain oven chips video on CZcams. It's so funny.
Wow that's a big difference gazza in the chips I can see the cheaper version being as good as the others may be wrong but I will soon find out once you finished
That's proof of the saying 'cheap as chip's ' ! Like you said Gaz ,there wasn't that much difference between them ,so I reckon the cheapest were the best 😊👍
You might need to revisit fries and some of the other foods you have reviewed with inflation going through the roof. I buy Asda frozen fries; earlier this year I was paying £1.15, last month £1.50 now £1.70. That’s roughly 50% increase and it ain’t stopping there!
The dearest ones have a few added ingredients to make them taste better and charge a lot more for less contents in the bag, but I would always buy the cheapest version even if they have to be cooked a little longer to get them to brown.
Hi Gareth to be honest ,have tried different oven chips ,and fries done in oven always take forever to cook ,or get burnt ,to me chips should be fried ,but ,a agree all day long another foodie ,can't beat homemade chips, done proper ,with a fried egg and beans, and butted bread ,😉
None of those fries are cooked well(not your fault Gaz) I can see the paleness of the fries from the video You simply can't do fries in an oven. Theyll either be undercooked and soft with raw potato inside with possible burnt ends or they be overcooked, hard and burnt with the potato inside simply gone. More crunchy fries than crispy. It might not be an healthy option but a deep fat frier is the only way to go.
They sell those American Fries in Iceland, don't they? I always get them when I shop there. A chip's a chip, at the end of the day, so I'd always go for the 79p ones. Only time I buy McCain is if they're on offer. I bet the McCain ones are more fattening too, with batter on!
I viewed a few of your fish reviews, if you visit sainsburys, and go to the freezer section and look for scotish reasonable sourced fish, blue and white box, get the haddock, trust me on par with a fish and chip shop,
Gareth. You did the other day a Salad Cream off. Can you do a mayonnaise off. But please include Waitrose Essential Mayonnaise. I prefer Waitrose more than the bigger brands. Just to night tried them Asda basic beefburgers from a few weeks ago. Quite impressive. Cheers mate👍
Can't beat McCains for Frozen Fries/Chips I'm afraid they are the best/kings and more like McDonald's.. they just crisp perfectly and are seasoned perfectly.. somethings are worth paying more for and you get what you pay for (sometimes!) McCains are worth paying extra for in my opinion. 200G per portion is still 6/7 meals. Value.
Asda or tesco own French fry’s used to taste amazing but then again I used to fry them in deep fat fryer then made best chips but this day and age we health I’ve moved to ninja they just burn easily in there unless I use fat chips and spray them with spray light turn out great
@@BaldFoodieGuy I can give you a recommendation on the next video or future video. Best super noodles from different stores as I have noticed they have their own brand, aldi is ok imo but personal preference they're only 30p to!
There's only one way I'll each chips and that's fried one's. Oven chips. Nooo! I'm fortunate in growing my own spuds for frying, and you can't beat 'em. However, if I do run out of potatoes, I buy the Iceland crispy fries at £100 for 1.25k. Deep fried, these are very good. The McCain have a coating on them but don't justify the price. I think you're mostly paying the extra for the name. An interesting review. The price is mostly the talking point, and I think you need to shop around. Cheers!
Woo its Just gotta be Mac Cain by far the best if any fries absolutely beautiful , I think it's about how long you cook them for , in my oppion they needed a little longer than you had them in for , we've made that mistake before and it really does make a difference 😊👍
Have you tried chip seasoning, the younger ones in my family love it. I like good old fashioned homemade chips, with salt on and on a butty, that’s good enough for me any day
Ime a hash brown man meself not a lover of chips but each to there own good review still as always gazzza hope u and family r well stay safe see u on the next one 👍
Farm Foods at last…next it might be Home Bargains or even Herron Foods….. You’ll just have to park round the side of the store put your hoodie up and wear sunglasses when when you go in,haha…. Do you do a Royal wave when you go in to M&S?

However, if I do run out of potatoes, I buy the Iceland crispy fries at £100 for 1.25k. Deep fried, these are very good. The McCain have a coating on them but don't justify the price. I think you're mostly paying the extra for the name. An interesting review. The price is mostly the talking point, and I think you need to shop around. Cheers!
cheers Steve, great growing your own spuds mate. Ive grown some in the past.
My new fav CZcams channel
cheers Jason.
Woo its Just gotta be Mac Cain by far the best if any fries absolutely beautiful , I think it's about how long you cook them for , in my oppion they needed a little longer than you had them in for , we've made that mistake before and it really does make a difference 😊👍
yes but mc cain are dear Richard, try the others you might be suprised.
Better in the chip pan 👍
If you worked out the price per 100 grams the difference is even bigger. Great vid thx 👍
good point cheers.
Great review mate! Well worth knowing 79p it is! Lol 😂😎👍

Such s simple idea but such a great service. Well done again. I like McCain's, but Co-Op skin on are delicious and pretty cheap too.

Have you tried chip seasoning, the younger ones in my family love it. I like good old fashioned homemade chips, with salt on and on a butty, that’s good enough for me any day
