John Watt, this mediocrity thing that Levy haters use is stupid. Tottenham have not been mediocre since Enic took over. How can a club that is consistently near the top be mediocre? In fairly recent years Spurs have ended the season in 2nd, 3rd 4th 5th...and on more than one occasions. They won a cup 16 yrs ago and got to cup finals since then including UCL cup final! They qualify for Europe more times than not. How can that be mediocre? In my book mediocre is mid table and below and not ever qualifying for Europe. The Levy haters lie and exaggerate and only show up when we lose a match. Spurs are of course one of the top clubs in the Premiership but not at the very top. They now play in the best stadium in the world and train at the best training facility in the world. They built the new stadium because they have ambition. They are renowned as being one of the best run clubs in England and in world football. They are currently 5th out of 20 in the table and gunning for 4th in the early stages of a major squad rebuild. Change the record pal, the mediocrity comments sound childlike, boring and stupid.

Clubs who are in the same competition as bigger and wealthier clubs do not have an entitlement to win. Clubs who are not the biggest or wealthiest who come 4th have simply done the best they can. Only one team can win. Those fans who can not except that should go support a team like Man City and then change again when they lose form. Any fan who questions Wenger is beyond arrogant and should look at there own position in life. I doubt it will be at the top! Spurs can’t buy their way into the conversation for who will win the title like other clubs have done historically. FFP will prevent this ever happening again. But oligarch and state owned clubs have a massive investment head start on those clubs doing things sustainably like Spurs. They also have so few academy products making a significant impact in the first team. Massive development still needed although U18s and U21 teams look strong and competitive now for the first time in decades. The next 5 years look bright at Spurs. Trust the long game.

Ange is dammed if he does and dammed if he doesn't. O'Neil makes a good point but I'd like to see him say when he was a manager that he'd settle for 4th and leave it at that. Of course Ange will be privately happy / satisfied to be in Champions league football but professional sport is about winning not settling. Why try and change a winner as your manager. Its a dead rubber argument. Listen to the guy's words.

Because of his “easy going” candour People don’t realise that Ange has an enormous ego. (Not to say that’s a bad thing in his profession). To him, the idea of being happy with 4th place is insulting. That’s why he reacted in that way. He wants to win the prem and the UCL, and he won’t be satisfied with anything less. I think it’s unlikely he will achieve that at spurs, but that is his aim.

  • @hssIceland

I haven't heard the full interview but from that clip it sounds more like he is saying that his goal for the season isn't to get fourth, that he is not gonna celebrate getting fourth if the team hasn't progressed this season. First and foremost he want's to see progress and if that brings with it 4th place or 5th or whatever then that is irrelevant.
He doesn't sound like he is saying that 4th in it self isn't an achievement, because it is, but if the reason you get 4th has more to do with someone else slipping up rather then your team getting better then it's a false achievement in a sense.

Newcastle are prime example of what Ange is talking about. Newcastle over achieved and secured CL football, so in Martin's eyes that was a great result for which Newcastle would kick on from. Fast forward to now and we have pundits calling for Howe's head on a stick as Newcastle struggle with the large number of games. Look there is no doubt in my mind Ange will be happy should Spurs finish fourth, but he doesn't want his players falling into the trap thinking they have achieved something, doing so would fall into the trap like Arsenal. To be honest I'd prefer Spurs not secure CL and instead qualify for the Europa League where they will have every chance of winning it. Being a weaker competition will give opportunity to share the load with second string players which still getting a result. Spurs don't want to end up like Newcastle or Man Utd were all the good work quickly becomes undone.

More games, with a squad who aren't in his eyes ready for that, so its not a positive thing in his eyes to get 4th when the team isn't ready.
At the moment Spurs might... might... get fourth not based on being a team playing consistent and well executed football but because others have dropped points to allow spurs if they do win to get the spot.

this is dinosaur thinking from the Pleistocene era missing the point. of course privately/innerly Postecoglou would take 4th. that's a table position, guaranteeing CL football, guaranteeing some financial progression at least for a season. it's not guaranteeing or ensuring the foundation for team progression. and that is his actual job, and the annual outcome of that in terms of table position/trophies won is an accruing outcome of the mindset you lead with in your club and its culture and cohesion every day. you lose sleep over your process, not your outcomes, when doing a big job like this. the outcomes are for people around you who need something to hang their hopes on. but they're not doing your job. actually Postecoglou is being honest and non-political, and not playing the mind games of hedging like the managers who have been hit one too many times. O'Neill's track record probably demonstrates why his thinking is different. when you stand up and do a big job, there is always RISK involved. Postecoglu is not running from that, not hiding behind table placement. he is putting them on the table - i intend to build a Premiership-winning team, and every season will be progress towards that. that's vision, not financial pragmatics and politics and job-keeping.
