Something I noticed, was that the carb was bolted down on what looks like an aluminium spacer. It really needed an insulating spacer like a phenolic spacer to keep heat out of the carb. 460’s get hot on top and carbs will vapour lock if they don’t have a phenolic spacer under them, especially if timing is not right. They’ll run hotter if that’s not right. They come with a insulating spacer from the factory, so someone took the factory spacer off at some point, maybe when the Edelbrock junk was fitted.
Edit: I just saw your comment at the end about trying to find a spacer and no one having them in stock.

    • @richardbates2367

That's exactly why most people run carb spacers on carbbed vehicles especially Ford and dodge.

If it's been sitting awhile you have a ton of crap in the fuel tank. The tank should be replaced. The original fuel pumps worked great but probably needs to be replaced and definitely the fuel filter. In the day we could get the tank steamed out and recoated with a rubberized coating. Good luck and stay safe guys .

When I graduated highschool in 88 I took my 66 Bug that someone else built on a road trip to meet friends at a camping spot about 350 miles from where we lived. About an hour in the engine shuts off over an over for the next hour but would start after sitting and cranking. The vent hose was pinched between the spare tire and the tank. About an hour away from the meeting spot it does it again. Looked at the hose and it was fine but when I opened the deck lid about a gallon of gas caught in the deck lid dumped on the hot headers and splashed all over me. The cheap ass fuel pump had shot the outlet tube out so I drove off the gas in the dual carbs while the fuel pump was filling the deck lid up. I'm so freaking lucky I didn't die that die but once I found a German made pump at a junkyard that had a fresh rebuild the rest of my trip went great. I wish you luck and appreciate the love of the Fords I grew up with which was my dad's first car after coming here with nothing. Actually a Mercury Cougar 4 speed but close enough.

Did you pull the pickup out of the tank and check out the pickup screen? As old as it is, it could be the problem. I have a 460 with a four barrel and no spacer and I never had a vapor locking issue. You could remove the intake and block the exhaust crossover to reduce heat in the carb. It won't help efficiency but it will help the heat problem.

Exactly what I was thinking. I doubt it's vapor lock. Vapor lock isn't something that is a continuous problem like experiences here. Probably a case where at the first sign of issues you stop and get one of those edelbrock electric fuel pumps, about 20 feet of fuel hose for the size of this land yacht and find a marine/boat place and buy one of those plastic fuel tanks to get it home until you can order and replace the tank and sending unit. Might cost about 200 dollars in parts but it sure beats laying on your back on the side of the highway multiple times.

I saw a video on Uncle Tony's Garage about this. the second outlet is a fuel return back to the tank. I had to make a fitting for the return and run line. That coupled with a phenolic spacer helped a lot. If you can get unethanol fuel you'd be in good shape. Unfortunately I don't live within hours of a place where I can get it.

"Yeah we're in the middle of nowhere..." Welcome to southern Oregon and far northern California.. there's absolutely nothing but long expanses of rolling hills and dead grass with the occasional bush thrown in. Just FYI for future use... Redding/Los Molinos is a big speed trap for CHP.. my dad got busted doing 72 in a 55 between the two when we were headed up to Medford to pick up a Uhaul before going to Rogue River to pick up a pair of FJ40 Land Cruisers.. luckily he got busted the first day without the trailer or it would've been way worse... it still was an expensive ticket though. That shot after the cop pulled you over... that looks really familiar, I guess 99 does most of the way though.. I live about half an hour north east of Woodland out by Beale AFB.
I can tell you part of why it was vapor locking so bad... It's a factory intake, it still has the crossover in it, that intake gets super hot, the aluminum carb is bolted straight to the intake so it's super hot boiling the fuel inside of it. If you would've put a phenolic spacer under the carb you would've been fine.

Thank you and your GF for laying your lives on the line for us. Please drive that rig home to your house after Marty fixes her. You need that and Lord knows you earned it.
I've got a 68 with an Eddelbrock and I definitely need a spacer. So Thank you for this.
What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.

  • @Project_Low_Expectations

Being that you had liquid fuel boiling in the carb, you are probably spot on with wanting a plastic spacer. I always had an aluminum spacer under my Edelbrock carbs and never had issues, with both cast iron and aluminum intakes. When no one had the pump you needed you should have done a generic ‘clikity clack’ inline pump. That would have helped quite a bit and could cure the issue just by raising the pressure in the carb.
Other things to have looked at… any restriction before the pump increases the odds of vapor lock. Even a clean new filter will increase the chance a little… a clogged one would drop the pressure enough to where the fuel would boil at less than 100°. I never run filters before the carb for this reason. Restrictions inside the tank would obviously do the same.
There is also a chance of pinholes in the fuel line between the tank and the pump. The pump would just suck air through the line instead of the gas.
It’s a beautiful rig and once it’s sorted out will be awesomazing. You should bring it back and see if you can complete a trip in it.
And the mustang sounded bad ass, we need to see it in the daylight.

On the road I know you did all that anybody could do to try and run down the issue. I agree on the fuel tank filter inside the tank attatched to the pick up tube may be an issue. I always have an external clear plastic filter at the tank . carb spacer that is composit is essential as thick as you can get which should be 1 in thick. And also to keep the fuel cool going to the carb put an inline filter with a 1/4 bypass coming out if it to return to the tank. May be a line already there for to connect to. My 78 bronco had the same issue. I done everything. Everything was a help.

Sorry to hear about all your troubles on your trip. That is a great looking camper that hopefully just needs some TLC. Too bad I didn't know when you were making the trip. I live about an hour South of Sacramento and about 30 mins North of San Francisco.

I feel your pain! I've made the trip to visit my parents on the Oregon coast and back to So. Cal. several times a year for about 30 years. Mostly drove older cars. I've had troubles with my old cars a few times. The only time I needed a tow home was in a 84 Mercedes 300TD station wagon. Vacuum pump went bad and caused the automatic transmission to upshift and downshift at random and the brake booster wouldn't work. It was Christmas Eve and I couldn't get a rebuild kit until after Christmas at best or after New Years at worst. Funny part was the exit I limped to was like where Mercedes Diesels go to die. There was at least a dozen of ole Mercedes strewn about in various stages of disrepair.

The 300D was a great drive people went from camels to mercedes can only blame the driver.Fuel oil water never stop.Unless you hit something. The last decent MERC new ones crap buy a Korean car over a Mercedes

@@adamheazlett1179 Yep, they run FOREVER. I still have the Mercedes 300TD wagon. It runs like a top and drives great. It gets fair mileage (25 MPG average). I wish it had overdrive cause it revs over 3,000 RPM at 70 MPH. Vacuum pump goes out every few years, so I keep a spare pump just in case... Otherwise they are bulletproof.

You need to watch the "NoNonsenseknowhow video on how he fixed vaporlock on his 74 Galaxie! Works like a charm! You need to make a return line back to the tank. It's a bit of a job but worth it for a long road trip.

A friend of mine dated a teacher from Brooklyn NY. On her days off she would fly to Edmonton Alberta Canada to ride with him in his Peterbilt hauling fuel to the Ft. McMurray. Your girlfriend is that cool.
Now my friend took his awesome girlfriend with him to Australia while he drove road trains in the Outback. Afterward his contract was done they bought a used camper and spent 6 months travelling around Australia. You need to one up that for your girlfriend.

You actually trusted someone else to do the prep before taking an unknown vehicle on a road trip? Take it from a retired ASE master tech: ALWAYS perform your own prep work for a road trip. 460 Fords are known for overheating, especially in the Camper model chassis. The cure was a carburetor isolator plate under the carb. They were made of a phenolic material, which means they do not age well. Find one and put in under the carb, replace the stick fuel pump with a higher capacity OE replacement fuel pump and insulate the fuel lines.

  • @jmubreader

It’s vapor locking because of the fuel. Gasoline now boils at right around 100° only way you can keep it from turning into vapor is Run high pressure like a modern fuel injection system. I have a similar rig and I have to do all my driving in the early morning before it gets hot. You can also add an adjustable vacuum leak that you can adjust when it starts to vapor lock to balance the fuel mixture. I know that sounds rube Goldberg but it has been working for me. Best thing drive when it’s cool .
