People don’t appear to grasp that Mainoo, at 18, played against Brazil and Belgium and looked like he was 28. As farcical as the FIFA rankings are, Brazil is 4th and Belgium 5th in the world rankings. I don’t think people are truly grasping how natural and calm Mainoo looked at 18 against literally a couple of the best national teams in the world. England were not playing the likes of Armenia, New Zealand, or Guatemala. They were playing legitimate elite teams and Mainoo stood out big time. He was man of the match yesterday. How do you not bring a player who was literally voted man of the match?

Those that make the most noise around players/clubs tend to make negative noise & are those that have unrealistic expectations where they demand instant success, which in the real world isn’t realistic.
These people expect a player to walk into a team & to run the most, win the most headers & tackles, not misplace a pass & to get every shot on target (if not score from every attempt), again, not realistic.
Yet strangely the majority of central midfielders now take no risks, pass sideways & backwards to pad their stats out by getting their passing accuracy up, yet it was Mainoo’s initial play that developed the opportunity for Toney to win the penalty.
Mainoo could have easily just passed sideways or backwards but instead he turned upfield between two Belgium players & create the opportunity.
Similarly to Bellingham, Saka, Foden & further down the pecking order, Harvey Elliott & Alex Scott, they play with no fear & that’s what supporters want to see imo.

But he looked poor against Fulham and out of his depth at the Etihad

    • @Tipps72
      @Tipps72 Před měsícem +5

@@seddakmiah6540 Injuries obviously haven’t helped, missing the regular back 4 or even parts of it for huge parts of both games didn’t help, Konza isn’t a right-back, coming on to replace Walker & then starting there against Belgium before switching to play centrally with another inexperienced international in Dunk while Chilwell had a shocker against Brazil in particular meant the defence were easy to target.
Losing Kane & Saka also disrupts the affect of defending from the front.
And while Mainoo could have probably done more, for someone who has only played limited club first team games, is so young & making his debut (both off the bench & then starting), he’s going to have some nerves & not do everything perfectly but who do you play in place of him because Phillips has been woeful at West Ham & Henderson hasn’t done enough for a while now to take what were their regular places in the team.
I think the obvious way Southgate will go is with Rice & Bellingham as the two central midfielders & assuming Saka is back then Foden or Maddison play as the #10 with Foden going left if Maddison starts as the #10.
I’m no Utd supporter, so have no affiliation towards Mainoo but I’d put him ahead of Phillips & Henderson (as I said) & even Conor Gallagher, who else does that leave as possibles?

Yeah it's not arrogance, it's fearlessness and courage. He understands his ability and is not scared to get the ball and move into tight spaces. He's not afraid of the press and pressure when receiving the ball or having to go past players.
Being fearless and arrogant are not the same thing. Midfield is not a position you have arrogant players. They are the grafters AND the brains behind the team because midfield is where games are won and lost. In midfield you need to balance attack with defense and be switched on at all times.
You equate arrogance with forwards as they have to take players on to create and score goals.

People often forget how bad Southgate was tactically at the World Cup, poor timing for subs and had players who could have made a difference on the bench (Rashford etc). while mainoo is a completely different type of player southgate never have, mainoo can play as 6, helping defense but at the same time playing box to box surging opposition defence as 8 and sometimes even as 10, when every ball goes through him, these type of versatility is what england squad still lacking.
Not to mention how he's comfortable to play in a tight space using his quick feet and his low center of gravity to changing direction, open up spaces for himself or his teammates, he has potential to do what busquets, rodri did for their team. his 70 minutes against belgium should be an enough evidence to show what he capable of, some of england chances are came from his movement and passing

Mainoo should feature for England but I still think the midfield three of Gallagher, Rice and Jude is the right formula. I don't think Gallagher was that bad against Brazil. I'm thinking either Gordon or Bowen on the left and then Kane and Saka up top. Back four is a mess. I think it's Stones and Walker on the right but the left could be anyone. I think Foden is best as a 10 but Jude is just too good to not play there. Foden also on the wing just doesn't do enough in terms of work. Bowen and Gordon are both tireless. Henderson should be substituted for another player. Watkins should be dropped. Palmer should be given a chance on the left. I think England can win the tournament because Southgate is more willing to change and try new things compared to Deschamps who I truly don't understand how he has held onto that post for so long.

The shocking thing is they were debating even moving him up to the u-21s, and now there's a discussion of whether he should go to the euros or even start in the euros. No offense but england looks so disorganized and clueless lol
That backline is the major worry. Shaw probably won't be fit and there's no good alternative. There's a bunch of great rightbacks but all are injured at the moment. CB is a disaster. Even when fit, I don't think their CBs are good enough. Case in point in Maguire - he has a mistake in him, he's slow, and he's one dimensional in that he's really only good at defending the box from crosses and blocking shots given his size. At utd he only really plays if there are injuries or if others ahead of him are in bad form.. but he starts for England? That is a massive problem lol. He has good mentality at times and sometimes displays good leadership but man if I was picking teams at utd he'd rarely get a game or be sold outright. There have been times where he seems either quicker to react or just flat out faster than he usually is not most of the time it's like watching slow motion in both his decision making when on the ball and his defending and reading of the game.
The fact that Southgate needs more defensive minded midfielders to protect his slow and one dimensional defense just tells you how england need to play to have any success in the euros.
Despite their depths and quality in certain positions, they dont have that defensive balance. What they needed to do is bring in as many young CBs as possible for training and friendlies and figure out a way to not need to rely on Maguire this summer.
I'd also try and figure out which rightbacks can play leftback because they are stacked on one side yet threadbare on the other.

Of course he will be included. Ridiculous clickbait. Anyone who knows anything about football recognises what they are seeing.

This Mainoo hype is unreal ,the English media will work overtime to make him the next something.
Just let the kid play his football in peace .
and by the way England wont win anything no matter the coach.

England HATES players like Foden, Maino, Grealish types guess why? They prefer rigidity, conformity, lack of creativity. 21 year old Debruyne wouldn't make it here!
