Thank you so much for your continued support. This case was always going to be a tricky one for us to cover. How do you think Huntley evaded detection for almost two weeks, right under everybody’s nose?

I'm guessing this was before it became such widespread knowledge that killers like to insert themselves into the crime, so he seemed like a helpful guy 🤷 If this happened today he would instantly be a suspect. Also, it's mad to think this was 18 years ago!

Bit of extra info for ya, you can do with it what you want but my mum insists this is true!!
When this was first on the news my mum was sat in bed and sore this, as it was playing on the TV my mum fell almost into a day dream, she could see a track and and glow on the left hand side of the track, she could hear a voice what sounded like it was saying merry hill, it ended up being mildenhall, she could then hear a voice saying we're here, she rang the police and told them but they ignored her, 3 days later the bodies of the girls were found, exactly where she had told the police to look, by a dog walker.
      Cheers

ABSOLUTELY Jay! And Philip. J I remember watching that live at that specific time and as soon as she said it I know she was part of it, and going by Ian Huntley's previous body language that he had to be the biggest part of it, and the fact that the girls had gone, meant it must've been murder.

One of the scariest and most horrifying things about this case is that the last thing one of the girls (both just 10 years of age) would have ever seen is Huntley murder her friend before he then murdered her.

Oddly enough, I was also in Florida when this case hit the news in the UK. The hotel my family was staying in had a small selection of British newspapers and they'd immediately get snapped up every day by other British guests, such was the interest in the case back home.
I like that you guys cover lots of UK cases, as these often get overlooked by other more America-centric crime podcasts. I'd be interested in an episode on the Christopher Halliwell case as it happened in my hometown and there's been speculation that he had more victims that have never been uncovered. Hi guys. I'm coming to this late after binge watching your channel at the weekend during a 36 hour hospital stay. Loving your content. Your humour is never gratuitously cruel or derisory and works with your respectfully researched & well delivered material. You're brave because this case is repugnant & I remember noticing Beckham shirts for months after it happened. Ordinary, carefree circumstances for these 2 innocents that caused them to collide headlong into a pair of the planet's most reprehensibly evil people. And yes, that's both of those dark characters. Maxine couldn't possibly have been as blind to the truth as she postures. Slam me down if this is harsh but the fact they DIDN'T discuss this whilst under surveillance in the hotel room says it all. At the very least she'd be asking Hammerhead to wrack his brains to remember anything from the chance doorstep encounter he claimed to have had with them. FFS?! Wouldn't she be asking exactly what they had said about her? It makes no sense. The silence shows they both agreed to keep quiet in the interests of the other. If I'm coming home in the wake of my partner committing a double child murder in a tiny house, I'm confident something's going to feel just a tad off kilter!!!!! As for the police not checking the shed sooner (breaking door in perhaps?) I reckon they thought it inconceivable that a killer could be that stupid. His own workplace shed? Seriously?! And a tenner to the local garage to keep schtum?! 5 days of jury deliberation.......was this jury sitting in on the wrong trial? The whole thing would be laughable if it were not so horribly real. I'm subscribed & will share. You guys should have way more subs. It's brilliant.

I was on my way to a holiday in Norfolk when we hit traffic pretty badly. Right around RAF Lakenheath. It wasn't until we heard news reports that the girl's bodies had been found that we realised why there'd been so much traffic - police had the area cordoned off. It was the height of Summer & like many murders of its kind, felt all the more horrific that something so terrible should happen at a time of year that they would otherwise had been playing out, carefree. It about the only thing I recall from that holiday now, looking back.

Also worked "out Woop Woop" and that is easy a rural shed size Down Under. This is an awful story - I changed my mind about Maxine many times over the years - the past tense could have been because she wasn't going to be working there any more BUT she continued to support him and that finished it for me because she kept protecting him too long.

Ben, I have accidentally gathered supportive evidence for your theory that Myra Hindley does indeed look genuinely scary, regardless of the connotations of knowing her as a child murderer. I was watching your Ian Huntley podcast last night and had paused it to go to sleep. In the morning my little 4 year old girl picked up my iPad which had paused randomly on the picture of Myra Hindley and said “mummy, who is that? She looks really scary!” And I can assure you that she has NO prior knowledge of her misdeeds whatsoever and long may it remain so! Great work, really enjoying your podcasts guys 🙂

Estate agents should tell any new tenants or owners about crimes that would have taken place at the property but I'm not sure it's a standard. I think they need to in the US though.

    • @Opomax
      @Opomax Před 3 lety +1

Why should they tell? Seems irrelevant. If someone was raped in a house you are buying 60 years ago, then drug dealing 15 years ago, domestic violence 5 years ago, what a weird and odd thing to list out to someone. Also it would be incredibly hard to do, only high profile media cases do addresses get released. should estate agents have access to police data bases to note down every crime in every property?

Anyway what I really wanted to say, is that you guys brought back a really traumatic memory for me, with the whole Motorola brick thing... Me and Edward Bacon, my school crush (obsession) were the first people to get mobile phones, we were quite competitive... When non uniform day came around, we would compare CDs (Eminem) trainers (vans) who was more grunge (me, obvs.) Etc... But he didn't find me attractive. He called me freckle-faced poodle... We laugh about it now, over Facebook... Ha.. 😳 ANYWAY.. late one Friday evening, I got a text message from Edward. It said "I love you, Nadia" I was stunned... He must have been hiding his true feelings, I thought... On some level I'd always known this was probably the case. But to actually see those words, and not just "Luv" but "love" and not "u", but "You"! It was so intense. Then 20 minutes later I got this: "HAHAHAHA this is ED's DAD!!!! Loser!" I literally cried... I haven't thought about that in a long time... Thanks guys.

Looking forward to your next three! Also, to be fair I'd be interested in any cases you do, so I don't have any specific requests. I did miss the little story bit at the beginning setting the scene though, but I'm guessing it either takes a lot longer to edit, or the case was more sensitive (children) so you didn't want to do it on this one (or both)

I agree about the shed I don’t think it mattered about when they asked for the key they had suspicions against Huntley, they searched their house why not search the shed at the same early stage. Going back to the key did the school not have a key for the shed and did they really need a key of course they didn’t. They missed an opportunity to establish major evidence much earlier on in the investigation!

Lads wonderful podcast and well detailed, congratulations. You were asking about house prices after a murder. The Watts house in Frederick Colorado has almost doubled in price since the horrific murders but it has become an attraction for all types who are constantly visiting it . It would make a great podcast lads . Their s no way this guy did this on his own and the entire case is online from him returning to the house to his confession. Its become the most infamous case in the US . Good luck guys . Pat 🇮🇪

    Good coverage guys
Just to add to your concerns regarding the length of time it took police to search the "Shed".
Police need to have reasonable grounds to enter a property. If they do not have the owners permission then they would have to apply for a warrant to enter. This can take some time. The only ways they could enter without a warrant is if they are confidant that there is evidence is in there, or if someone is in immediate harm. I'm assuming, they didn't have enough evidence to enter without a warrant. That may have been the delay.
This is just speculation, I can not confirm for sure. But may have been a reason.
Like yourselves, this is one of the most memorable stories I can remember as a child. Still devastating to this day.

This is the crazy thing - they had warrants to search the entire school grounds (including Huntley’s caretaker house) and they failed to search the “shed” on multiple occasions. The shed was on grounds they had clearance to search 😮

I wonder how many homes that have had a murder take place have had murders to or from multiple owners over time. I'd imagine a murderer buying a home that has had a murder already take place there would be less phased by it than someone who hasn't but I'm not sure really, just a thought I had when you were talking about the value of a murder house.

Everyone who was there was aware of the fact that she lived there even down to which house she lived in. It wasn’t long until she was moved on though as the villagers were very unhappy with her being there

Regarding Maxine Carr, a colleague of mine said that she used to be a receptionist at a dentists in Stretton, near Burton upon Trent. Maxine apparently was an agency cleaner after the Soham case. She kept herself to herself, and looked very distant and scary. She didn't turn up one week, and the agency said she was still called Maxine Carr
