LB, Adult Ortho-k applied to solve Nearsighted in one eye and Farsighted in the other.

LB came to our office with a unique situation. She came saying that she knew that one eye is nearsighted and one is farsighted. There was a huge difference between the two eyes. She was interested in have Orthokeratolgy. She said: "I think I would be a good candidate".
She "forgot" to bring her eyeglasses. This tells me that eyeglasses don't really solve her problem; otherwise, she would be wearing them and would not forget to bring them.
My distance vision has gotten bad enough that I need eyeglasses for driving. My left eye is nearsighted. I see clearly if both eyes are open, but if I close my right its blurry. Essentially, she has learned to suppress (turn off the picture from her left eye, when looking at distance.
She has a number of medical issues, but we will concentrate on her sight issues. She has eyeglasses for distance, but does not wear eyeglasses for reading. When she reads, she must hold the reading material very close to her left eye. This tells me that her left eye is very nearsighted, and falls in line with what she verbalized at the start.
She shared that the left eye "used to be my good eye. Then they patched it and it went to sleep and it got worse and worse over the years. as a teenager, she wore a soft Contact Lens in her left eye. "That helped me see, until I got a scratch in 1982, and then no longer able to wear contact lenses.
She had a 12 diopter difference between the two eyes. For most people, there is a difference of 0.25 or 0.50.
There were other eye health issues, but again, we will concentrate on her sight issues.
I think that anyone reading this, gets the idea that this is a complex situation.
Ultimately, and in the interest of brevity, we addressed the right eye with Hyperopic Orthokeratology and the Left eye with Myopic Orthokeratology. Many doctors prescribe only for children, and only for Myopia.
She is now able to see at distance AND at near, without having to wear eyeglasses at all and without having to wear Contact Lenses during the day. She now also notices that she has improved depth perception and is able to drive a car more confidently.
