  • MJ has Congenital Nystagmus. He flew to our office from Montana and is interested in nystagmus treatment options. He has had Nystagmus since birth and had eye muscle surgery about 10 years ago. That surgery reduced the nystagmus for a short period of time, but the benefits were limited. he describes that: “the left eye feels like it’s kicked out. It feels that that eye drifts out and up". His brothers have nystagmus as well.
He has considerably less eye movement with prism base left in each eye. When he was here for a follow up visit, he said: “it brings everything in. Its good on the far zone; like you are focusing and it brings everything in. I feel that my head is straighter". We first placed Fresnel prism. As expected, he ultimately did better with ground in prism. Surprisingly, he was able to attain 20/30 acuity when using a 2x telescope, and a 20/20 with 4x telescope. Syntonic Phototherapy further reduced the nystagmus.
We use all of the “tools” available to help our patients; prism when appropriate, Syntonic Phototherapy, telescope, etc. We attempt to find the therapy or combination of therapies to help patients reach their goals of clearer and more comfortable vision. We are honored that patients find us and travel to our office, often from considerable distance, so we are able to help them solve their problems.
