- This is a comparison and discussion regarding a couple of excellent and nicely priced slingshots (catapults). I recently became interested in modern design and modern materials slingshots and these two were among my first purchases. I talk about using these for protein procurement (hunting) and for recreation. The FlippinOut Scout from simpleshot and the Pocket Predator Hathcock Target Sniper made by Bill Hayes are quite different from one another but I think both are very worthwhile devices. I contrast and compare some of the features, discuss the differences in the purchase experience, do a little shooting, and tell you weather or not I think these could be used for hunting small game. Both the Flippin Out Scout and the Pocket Predator Hathcock Target Sniper are capable and fun slingshots (catapults).

I have several slingshots from simple shot. A scout,a Bean flip, an Axiom occularis, the Torque, and the hammer.I can shoot heavy bands with any of them. Although some easier than others. But, when I hunt I use the hammer with the wrist brace for a slingbow or heavy bands. My favorite is the Rambone 2.0. The hammer grip is amazing! Super great accuracy and it will handle and shoot the heavest bands.

currently have a scout (new one made of polycarb) a 3d printed rambone, and a home made bb shooter PFS. I really love the scout for plinking with a single layer band on it, the fact that it is polycarbonate gives it the edge as a first "adult" slingshot.
Enjoyed watching you shoot. It gave me a better insight and some pointers.

Well, I ordered a Scout from Simple-Shot and a HTS Sniper from Pocket Predator, both products are very nice. I emailed Pocket Predator Sunday about their product and Mrs.Hays contacted me within the hour and answered all my concerns about the products. I ordered the Hathcock Target Sniper and it arrived in two days with bands attached and some ammo included to help get me started, great customer service. Mrs. Hays was very helpful, and helped me with my purchase. The "Pro Clip" mounting system is fantastic, no tools needed to change bands. The 2 day shipping , great customer service, and a great product at Pocket Predator was a very pleasant buying experience.I will purchase another soon. My experience was much different then what you are saying. Simple-Shot was OK.
Did you get his new HTS Advanced? And are the clips his "alien clips"? Just curios. As near as I can figure from reading the slingshot forum, and looking at my HTS, his clips don't work with mine, but the Advanced has universal forks with a hole drilled in the middle of each fork. I think I would prefer that because the HTS frame is by far the most difficult frame I have to tie bands on to.

I've got both of these slingshots and I would say I agree with pretty much everything you say here. Especially the shipping. My Scout took 3 days to get to me and the Hathcock took about 6 weeks. Both are very high quality and both have advantages...

Excellent! You will enjoy that frame a lot. I killed a couple of field mice with mine in the shop yard at work today. It didn't take me very long to get minute-of-mouse accurate to about 45 feet with the HTS.
Sounds like your mice are about like our iguanas - everywhere! I am hoping to control the population of these invasive exotics with the HTS. I use a pellet rifle now, but limit it's use to a few properties. Most areas here the houses are close together, and shots need to be backed up to prevent pellets from traveling too far. I could use some fluff ball ammo - something like the flu-flu arrows for archery... need someone to invent that!
I have both. I pretty much agree with your assessment of them. You can hunt with either, and they are both easy to get accurate with fairly quickly.

great information... kinda like ordering from proshot catapults in UK... they have the hathcock in cast aluminum.. n several other designed by Bill i just got the Ranger from them... on clearance.. as well as the PPMG +PRO it's pretty much what the hathcock is but a more hand friendly design by Gamekeeperjohn... great vid like to see some of your gopher hunting...

They really are fun. In fact, it's so easy to get on target with these (and specifically the Scout) that it gets a little addictive. I try to find a little time to shoot every day now and I haven't built a catch box yet so I'm still losing most of my ammo. I'm about to order 1000 3/8 steel ball bearings for the third time in four months ;) ... therefore: Expect the lead ball casting video I said I might do sooner rather than later. I have probably more than 100 lbs of line-o-type lead around here and it's going to be a money saver to just make my own ammo ;)

That's not a bad idea ;) ... An interesting note: There are a whole bunch of youtube channels dedicated to metal detecting. Some of them are really entertaining. Those fellows are constantly "treasure hunting" and they all seem to just have a great time doing it. There are four of five channels that really stand out, but my favorite of the bunch is nuggetnoggin. He has about a quarter million subs and I find his river videos fascinating.

I currently use the Dankung panther and I'm looking for something a bit more comfortable to shoot any recommendations?
I got one of those in a trade this winter. I agree. It isn't as ergonomic as it looks. Mine tends to bite in to my index and thumb if I grip it the way it seems to be intended. The pocket Predator Boy Scout has a similar grip, but is made of thicker material and therefore doesn't bite in to the skin while under pressure from heavier bands. I'm also getting really fond of the Pocket Predator Side Shooter Advanced.

It's hard to give advice deciding between these two. I like them both quite a bit. Luckily, they are both reasonably priced, so I don't feel bad telling people they should buy either one and then next time they have a few extra bucks, get the other. Both are a lot of fun to shoot and both are easy to shoot well.

I just recently bought the H.T.S. from Pocket Predator and ended up installing different bands with some spare Flip clips I had on hand from my Scouts. It looks like mine is a newer design because they worked as well on the Hatchcock as on the Scout. I don't think you can go wrong with either unless you like to hold the slingshot vertically (which the H.T.S. doesn't lend itself to).Also, my Pocket Predator arrived in less than a week, and I received a confirmation email and another email with tracking number when it shipped from Daranda Hays. Perhaps they are making a concerted effort at improved customer service?
A number of folks have mentioned that they had good experiences with the communication and shipping time from Pocket Predator recently. I'm glad to hear that. I like the product a lot (my HTS is a rabbit killer for sure. I've eaten a lot of Hasenpfeffer because of the HTS) and it's nice to hear they've gotten a handle on the customer service end of things.
I think you would be guided to one of them catapults because of where your from. I personally would go for a ppmg+
PPMG+ has been around a little over 4 years, I think. I made this video pretty close to 7 years ago.

I've been shooting slingshots for about a year, and have a serious difficulty shootng TTF, sideways, Lots of fork hits. Do you have any recommedations?
I have some trouble with that shooting my Torque slingshot. What solved it for me was putting a little twist on the pouch before I release it. Starting at 10:40, I go over that in this video czcams.com/video/jO-NY8XWFvY/video.html . Maybe that will help your situation.

It takes forever to get, but try one of the rough and ready line from A+ slingshots. I have both of the ones you reviewed, plus an A+ #2 Rough and Ready. I don't know why, but the A+ is in my pocket more than any other.
I've been looking at their website a couple of times a week for a couple of months ;) Right this minute, I'm thinking about buying the jackelope... one reason is that I'm about to review The Hammer. I have been shooting and hunting with the hammer for about six weeks now and I started collecting video footage a couple of weeks ago. Devices that can be either a slingshot or slingbow are on my mind, and if I get another one after the one I have, it is probably going to be the jackelope... but I got to shoot a Chief AJ a few days ago and that one is interesting too (no where near as pretty as the jackelope, but certainly intriguing).
The lever bow appeals to me. As I said, though, there's a long lead time, and feedback is good when you get it, but you ask they don't volunteer nothing.
How many rounds do you throw away each days? A catch box is wise!
I'm going to be real honest here: I don't care if I lose every single one of them. It's nice to be able to re-shoot them, but not nice enough for me to put a lot of effort in to retrieval. In my mind, I sort of compare it to my .22's. I've shot hundreds of thousands of rounds of .22lr in my lifetime and even during the 22lr shortage a couple of years back when I was paying as much as 10-15 cents a round, once a round is shot... it's shot.
As a maker of slingshots myself, I would like to give you some advice to help with the way you shoot, First your to quick on the release, The way you hold the pouch will give an irregular hit and miss, then there is the way you hold the slingshot, these are the things I have picked up watching you shoot, NOW how do we fix these little errors, well you need to be mindful of the way you hold the slingshot, leaning it top fork to you or bottom fork to you will throw you shot off, you don't do it all the time but you do do it, give your self time to aim, or you will just end up with a hit and miss situation, and the most important one of all the way you hold the pouch, I see so many people do this and they don't know why they are not getting consistent hits, you hold the pouch with your thumb on top, now when you release the ball has to come over you pointer finger and this will also throw the shot off, try holding it with your thumb under the ball, you also need to stop chocking the pouch grab the ball, I hope this helps you with your shooting.
I appreciate the advice. The next time I do a slingshot video, you'll probably notice an improvement in my fundamentals. Now and then I have a day when I just can't seem to get it together, but mostly I'm good to go hitting any 1" target at any distance to ~65'. I'm not lighting matches, but I've pretty much put the cat out of work killing field mice around here. 75-100' shots are still really challenging for me. I'm still 1 out of 3 and sometimes 1 out of 4 on an aluminum pie plate at 100'. I feel like something is missing in my consistency when I can't string hits together even at longer distances like that.
We all get days like that, Just relax take your time your only practising, you don't need to shoot before the pray gets away, think about the grip, think about the grip on the ball, are you standing comfortably, you will get to the point were you will be able to shoot tops off beer bottles, ( what I mean is, you take the lid off you stand it on its end and hit it off the beer bottle, ) now if you brake the bottle you have to scull a bottle, Good game to play with friends at the end off the game you don't have to worry about them driving home drunk because there passed out on the back lawn...LOL.
Love my Simple-Shot.com (gen. 1) Scout. Not a slick slippery surface such as the Pocket Predator products (Ranger, Seal Sniper), so the Scout feels great in the hand, and is very ergodynamic..
I'm very fond of both, but I can admit that I have two scouts and only one HTC.

I don't eat the gophers ;) They are just a varmint. I would imagine they are just as edible as a red squirrel, though.
The 100' shots were with .36 cal lead balls. The shots pushing the peanut can down the driveway were a mixture of 3/8 steel and .36 cal lead. I shot some marbles and .44 cal lead that day, too, but in the interest of keeping this video a reasonable length I decided not to include showing the difference in impact.
The bands I was using weren't really appropriate for stones. Simpleshot sells a red linatex band with a different pouch called the "rock chucker" that is made specifically for rocks. The Hathcock Target Sniper has a notch cut in the inside of the frame to accommodate arrows, but I haven't had much luck with that yet (I have tried it, but I think maybe I need shorter arrows). There are a few slingshots out there that have full arrow kits to convert between slingshot and sling bow. I'm not sure at all about shooting darts, but I have tried some other alternative ammo like hex nuts and bean shaped projectiles made from rolled lead. 10 and 13mm hex nuts fly true and have enough mass to devastate a field mouse. I think the bean shaped lead needs special attention paid to matching bands to the purpose. Sometimes on longer shots (50 to 75 feet) they seem to tumble.
BBs. I thought it was interesting when I was learning about modern slingshots that there are slingshots and bands specifically designed to shoot BBs. That's a really small projectile. My eyes have gotten too old to see a BB in flight and in fact, I paint a few of my lead balls white so I can see them better during practice sessions.

How much are replacement bands?
Depends on what bands you want to use. They range from about $3 for tubes to $10 for red rock chucker bands. On simple-shot, one of the better deals is the sampler set of 3 different kinds of bands including 6 total sets for $26, but if you're looking to save money, you can buy latex sheets and leather pouches and cut/tie them yourself to end up spending about half price.
The reason why Bill Hays doesn't get back as quickly as Nathan does is because Bill's main vocation is breeding Greyhounds.
Bill has videos of him making them particular frames in silly times im talking minutes so it dont take a month to make if hes up in orders then yes it may do but any good maker should have a stock of unfinished blanks or even a stock of made frames unless custom to keep on top of orders and get the frames out quickly
All I can really say is that I love the HTS. My one and only gripe with it is the care I have to take when installing bands. It has a slippery surface and it's tough to get bands to stay set... That said: I've eaten many rabbits I shot with the HTS. I've gotten very accurate and I'm comfortable taking head shots out to around 60 feet or so.... If I lost this one or if it were stolen or something, I'd replace it. And, I'd wait patiently until he was ready to send me one because it's worth the wait.

good review dude, although I am not so sure I would call killing ground squirrels, for the hell of it, with greater power power , as "respecting them", LOL! I personally regret killing too many critters when I was an asshole teenager and won't go there again unless I need "protein procurement" post Armageddon. Thanks again though as I am getting in market for slingshot for target shooting.
Also, in my experience, contacting Pockt Predator is made by them to be a PIA!! so you seem spot on with regards to that communication issue. Their "contact" link just puts me into a bizarre non-responsive app asking for which contact app I have, before rejecting it all. Totally F.U.pped
I'll always encourage anyone who has a shot at a rodent to take it. Any fun one might have while doing so is purely incidental ;) Gophers, pack rats, and field mice carry disease and present a hazard to livestock plus are way more competition than folks realize when it comes to grains. It's surprising how much wheat a few dozen gophers can destroy. Therefore, I'm fond of barn cats, bull snakes, pellet guns, slingshots etc etc. I've even been known on occasion to go ahead and send a few expensive centerfire big bore rounds out to get such varmints.

At the beginning of the video you were talking about the Scout..... just so you know, when the Gen.1 Scout came out, Nathan's business was under the original name of "FlippinOut Slingshots.com"..... which is where the "FlippinOut Scout" got its name..... However, before the Gen.2 Scout came out... he renamed the company.. "SimpleShots.com". Also, there IS a Difference between the Gen.1 and Gen.2 Scouts...... 1) the Gen.2 has a "textured" thumb and finger hold are ("modified pinch" grip?), whereas the Gen.1 was smooth.... 2) The Gen.2 Scout, the Torque, and others are now made from a reinforced Polycarbonate that is even tougher.... than the Gen.1 Scout, as tough as it was & is. So, the Gen.2 Scout... is just known as either the Gen.2 Scout, or it's just what it is.... "The Scout". The "FlippinOut" portion is no longer relevant. : ) Just some Trivia for ya.
I appreciate your coverage of the wait time from Bill Hayes.... and yes, he does state on his site that it's generally a 3+ week waiting time before shipment do to the fact that they are made per order for each customer..... he also tells people how to properly measure their hand and which size to order, based on the hand measurement (from the tip of your middle (longest) finger, down to the joint at the base of your hand, at the wrist).
He does have some models though that are pre-made and are IN stock, and therefore are usually shipped within 24 - 36 hrs depending on what hour and day the order is placed. I've also "heard" and read on forums about their communication skills being "somewhat" (re: almost Non-existant) lacking....... just the opposite of Nathans business at SimpleShots.com.... they will Always return your call within 24 hours, depending of course on when you call them..... if it's late Friday afternoon (east coast time), don't expect a call until Monday morning, but they will return your call when they get it... they're very good about that.

I work in the Elkhorns and live in the Big Belts... or at least I did live in the big belts. Dad, my son, and I spent the summer cleaning out the barns and the basement of the farm house. Dad sold the farm to some folks I don't know just a few weeks ago... So, I've lost that place as a good spot to shoot video. The good news is that I gained access to the Kleffner Ranch East of Helena. I got permission to fish the creek and do pretty much whatever I want out on the property away from the buildings. So, when I get back to making videos on a regular basis, I have a good place to work on them... plus all the places I love out in the forest. .. I might do a couple of indoor videos again soon (depending on how youtube behaves... they're making it tough for small channels and big channels alike depending on the content. They hate conservatives and they hate outdoorsmen now, so who knows what's next with youtube? I might be banned tomorrow for all I know).
I've purchased about 9 or 10 more slingshots over the last few months. I think I might do a series of comparisons in the Spring.

The Rambone is on my list for near future purchase. I got a SimpleShot Hammer that can take as much rubber as I can pull. I've done a lot of hunting with that one and it has been effective.

Both companies have contact info on their website. I'll assume you're talking about pocket predator, though. On the "contact" link on the upper right side of their pages, right click and choose "copy email address". And then when you go to your webmail, right click in the "to" line and choose "paste". Their site is written assuming folks use an email program like Outlook or Thunderbird or Windows Mail etc etc etc.
I received the current HTS with the Pro Clip mounting system, nothing "alien" about it, it is an American Design that works great, no tools required. Check them out on Mr.&Mrs. Hays web site. There are three mounting systems, you will be pleased, I am.
their website isn't the only source of information about their products. I'm asking if the clips you bought were the bifurcated alien clips or something else. www.indiegogo.com/projects/pocket-predator-slingshots-new-generation-preview-survival#/ . And, if you are using the pocketpredatorPro banding clips, did he drill yours special for you or did you get the new version of the HTS with holes drilled center in the universal forks? I'd be interested to discover that there is a way to get the PocketPredatorPro clips to work with my HTS without modifying it.
