- This is an in-depth look at The Hammer Slingshot/Slingbow from Simple Shot Shooting Sports. I have shot it recreationally and used it for hunting small game, varmints, and rodents almost every day for the last two months. I describe my experience with both the slingshot and the slingbow in detail. This is an impressive, well made, unique, and innovative design. It is an absolutely exceptional recreation and hunting implement.

Six years later and this is still, by far, the best and most comprehensive video on this product out there. Every single question I had before watching this video was answered.
AGREE
also agree, been looking for a good review as far as hunting with the xt, before purchase
As an aluminum can's rights advocate. I am absolutely MORTIFIED by the total disregard for the feelings of the cans in your video
Aluminum is a stupid material. Tin cans are better and their genetics have deeper roots in history and deserve more respect. Those aluminum cans are weak
way more information than expected. You gave me enough info to make my decision. Thanks so much.
Thanks for letting us know about the trocar tips I’m just starting to use them too!👍
Everyone that eats meat should go hunting at least once in their lives. It gives a whole new appreciation to meat, so when you buy it from the supermarket, you can appreciate the animal a bit more since you've been a part of the process before. This of course extends to processing your own game, instead of just dropping it off at the butcher to do all the cuts and package for you (though this is a great convenience and we did this with a buffalo and with a elk, we've processed all of our deer). That said, never hunted with a slingshot, though my father used to guard the chickens in the backyard by slinging house cats (probably all tomcats) that would try to take them.
I couldn't agree more. Hunting has always been part of my life (and I was lucky enough to grow up in agriculture) and I really wish I could help folks who don't really quite grasp how meat ends up on their table understand the whole process a bit better. If every meat eater had to kill, process, and eat at least one critter they consume in their life time, I think they would appreciate it on a completely different level.
Player Review totally agreed every one Have to butcher ones his own meat,it give's you More respect to the animals you eat
+Essential Gear & Useful Skills I love your videos
Agreed. Or at least fishing. But I like the way he wasn't condescending to ppl who avoid that topic and gave them ample time to move along.
going hunting is great but i believe that if you wanna buy a lot of meat in the supermarket (not the butcher) you should visit a slaughterhouse, i visited one with my school class and it was a shocking experience (lot of girls crying). Gives you an idea how they manage to mass produce meat.
Thanks for the in depth and thorough review! We really appreciate your honesty and enthusiasm. Don't hesitate to contact us should you ever need assistance and keep up the great work with your videos!
This has been the most fun I've had making one of my videos! The Hammer inspired me to get out and hunt... a lot. I think the only thing I like as much as being out hunting is getting out fishing, so I've pretty much convinced myself to get the bow fishing rig for this before Spring ;)
Would you be implementing the suggestions discussed in this video? I think those would be great improvements making the Hammer even better!
Amazing good comprehensive review. I was on the fence and even looking at a different Slingbow, but the information you provided helped me decide. Thank you. I just subscribed.
Great review. Have the scout the axium and the torque. Was debating the hammer. I think you've made my mind up. I now know I need this as well. Your review was very through and informative. Thanks for your time. I also find it to be true about the customer service very good.
Thank you very much for this detailed and well built video! You really made my day. Appreciate the effort, precision, and thoughtfulness you've put into this review. Thank you very much for choosing the Simple-Shot Hammer for such a quality presentation. Have a nice day, Mark
Thank *you* for creating such an innovative device! It's effective and fun.
Only found one place selling them in the UK and they are £96 or $107 . Not surprisingly there’s been some changes since the 80’s when I last had them. So they ship them with a basic beginner’s power band. Leaving the people who know what they are doing, to install powerful possibly dangerous in novice hands Bands. I’m impressed by all the improvements of the last few decades. I’m thinking they are equal or more powerful than many break barrel air guns. We are restricted to under 6ft lb air pistol and under 12ft lb air rifles. Crossbows along with air guns are restricted to use on private land and your accountable for possessing and using an illegal firearm if on public land. Catapults are not restricted unless you are intending to use it as an offensive weapon. These Catapults look to have the power to put rabbits in the pot. Enjoying your video.
Great video, appreciate the warning at the start, good way to go about it haha
Thanks! I was hoping I could find a good balance regarding the topic. I know some folks who have a hunting channel. They have all sorts of trouble with viewers who get upset about hunting and they end up getting a lot of their videos demonetized and/or taken down or age-restricted.
I am getting into slingshots and would like to thank you very much, your video is very complete and instructive.
Thanks for the video, very informative. Looking forward to see a part 2 of this video. I'd also hope to see a comparison between the Hammer and a bow.
Nice review and depth information on this item I too shoot a slingshot. And am looking for something like this. Thanks and keep us up to date on your game.
Great review and I agree with you. I have one. Money well spent. Greetings from South Africa.
Excellent video enjoyed it very much. Thank you.
Very in-depth and informative, thank you
Thanks for taking the time to watch!
Such a great review. Thank you
I took a decent sized doe using this slingshot, I was using double bands theraband gold.
Great product :)
How much practice did it take for you to feel confident enough to take it hunting?
The pre-warning to this video is well put together. Good work. Pleasing all viewers
Thanks! I thought about it quite a bit. This might have been a better/more interesting video had I kept it to half an hour and included hunting footage instead of taking the time to talk about the hunting (a picture is worth a thousand words)... but I recognize some folks are sensitive about the topic.
I just got the Hammer for my birthday. I didn't get the bow head; just the slingshot. Damn fun to shoot. I'll buy the bow parts in the very near future. Great slingshot.
Archery is sort of an expensive hobby, but I can't say enough nice things about The Hammer as a slingbow. It's accurate and powerful and just plain fun!
Great review
well worth the watch and learn prior to purchase, your a legend, warm regards from over the pond in blighty, namaste
this slingshot looks really like a beast, thanks for showing
This slingshot/slingbow is why I took a month off from doing videos. I've been out hunting in all of my free time instead of shooting video ;) I have purchased, tested, and reviewed many things this year. the Hammer is my favorite and has been the most fun out of all of it.
You and I have something in common. We have been canning apple sauce, apple pie filling, and apple butter for weeks. czcams.com/video/O-B85Hw-4qY/video.html ... My children are grown up now so I didn't have any little helpers this year, but the apple trees were productive.
awesome,i check your link right now
I might have to get one for s.h.t.f. poaching. Much more stealth than a full sized compound bow
....Yep!...Totally agree. I'm ordering mine next week! Somehow, I have a distinct feeling that we're going to be needing those slingshots soon...✌🤓
I already love your intro video. I can tell I'll like your review and overview of this. I'm hoping you'll convince me to order one of these by the time the video is over.
Just watch how easily arrows blow right through steel cans and how deep they sink in to a hard wood log... Check out how accurate this slingshot can be with a flashlight attached to the bottom. Buy it. You'll never regret it for a second. ;)
I'm about to order one as a late Christmas gift for myself. Your review definitely helped convince me! Kicking myself in the ass for not getting it when the full Hammer set with the slingbow fork and bands was on sale last week for $79.99, but it still seems like a good $100 spent and plenty of slingshot for anything that I'd need any time in the foreseeable future. I'm no serious hunter by any means, so I don't need anything too crazy. I'll probably try to hunt with it at some point, but mostly just to target shoot and have fun. Seems like a great value to get a good slingshot and slingbow all in one. Hammer seems like an excellent intermediate level slingbow as far as what I'd use it for as well as a nice versatile slingshot by any standard. I dig the optional removable wrist brace as well as the option of using either flat bands or looped tube bands, and of course the ability to swap it to a slingbow with ease. The accessory rail is something I haven't seen on much in this price range. I'll definitely end up try out putting a fishing reel on there and bringing it to the lake in the spring and summer.
All I can say is Yes. It's worth a hundred bucks. It's a game getter (I've eaten a lot of cottontail rabbit since I bought this). And, it's just really fun to shoot. As a slingshot or as a slingbow, this was the easiest frame to learn. It's stable and a good fit for almost any hand.
Yes those indents in frame are the front sights and your anchor point is the rear sight. I find I get the best accuracy when shooting the slingbow to hold on the indent closest to the whisker bisquit, so it's like on a 45% angle not 90%. I think it's more accurate because that hold is just more natural and thus more comfortable with this awesome unit. Try it, you'll like it. Increasing the size of the pull tab greatly increases the accuracy and thus the fun factor...just giving yourself a bit more material to grasp makes all the difference in the world with this baby. Hard to put this down once you start shooting...pretty soon the fish will just die of fright when they see somebody holding one of these at waters edge, hahaha!!!
48:47 great time for a Wolverine Ad lol hilarious
Wonderful video! Have a wonderful day!
Thank you and I hope your day is very good too!
The reason for weak bands in the begining when you get the slingshot is because most people are probably new to adult slingshots.
As you get better and develope your own technique, you will go up in stronger bands.
I have 4 of their sling shots and they all come with weaker bands to begin with.
I have the new Hammer XT and it comes with powerful black hunting tubes.
great in depth review. you've made it very difficult for me to not give these people my money for this tool. the versatility is off the charts
I'm glad you liked this video better than you seemed to like my scout vs hathcock video.
@@betweenfiveandseven I'm impatient sometimes when folks wander too far off topic or meander around getting to the point.... nothing personal. I dig your videos
Wow, I want two!
Very good presentation man.
I agree with the sight suggestion
It's a shame we now in a world where we got through all this B.S. explanation for all the different versions of people , if they dont like the content ,then don't watch lol lmao ,good job on video bro !!!
Chief AJ sells magnetic pouches set up for mechanical releases. , as does Texas Shooter on the forums. Great for shooting steel with the mechanical release.
I'll check that out. Thanks!
AMAZING
on that mod u was talking about you could get some glow in the dark paint. from amazon called neon nights glow in the dark paint.
You can get glow in the dark pain for sights and put your own dots on for aiming. Its something the older generation did and some still do for cheap night sights on guns with fixed sights.
Great vid
Great video, just ordered a hammer and waiting excitedly for the delivery!
You're going to love it! I have found it to be absolutely addictive.
very nice product
I'd love to see a sling arrow or slingshot fishing video. If you get on that that be great thank you. Your videos very good thanks. Good personality to if you lived in Texas or buy you a beer.
great comprehensive review! im sold haha. been sling shooting for a few years but never tried a slingbow the versatility is really impressive. what # looped tubes do you reccomend are those 1745s / 2050 / 3060s?
thanks :)
The night hunt video was cool. It reminds me of a FPS video game.
I killed so many pack rats using that light... those little critters just don't know what to do once they are lit up. They pretty much just sit there staring at the light waiting to get shot.
Thanks very much mate for your review. Bought one, love it. Im in Yorkshire England where we are not allowed to use arrows for hunting ???. But English rabbits are the same as American. And rabbit stew in a big Yorkshire pudding is just too good.
Rabbit is a favorite of mine as well. I can hunt them with anything here and would normally just use a .22 rifle, but a slingshot takes a whole different set of skills and put a bit of a challenge back in the process.
*What is the draw? How long of an arrow were you using?*
I can tell by your voice alone that you the same guy that did the tarp button set video.. I like that video too."Everything has their place but that place is not in my bag." If i quoted that correctly. lol
It's good to know something I said rang true enough to remember. Thanks for watching!
What is better the scout or the hammer XT?
The intro killed me haha.
Ive searched high and low online for the Hammer XT master kit but every single supplier is always sold out. Have they stopped stocking this or stopped making this in the UK ?
Just seen your vid , great review, question , it appeared to me on your slingbow set up that your ball bearing was put in on the shooter side , mine go in from the target side , love my Hammer, I have two, that way I don't have to change heads, ya kind of defeats the main purpose but as they say " one is none two is one"
I've found it doesn't matter which way I put them in with the white plugs and looped tubes so long as the bearing is deep enough. Since the tubes cross the plug, they won't pull through with the bearing in either side. But with flat bands, the ball bearing has to supply the pressure between the wall of the plug and the inside of the hole in the fork to keep the band from slipping. Inserting the bearing from the shooter side with tubes allows me to change tubes by pushing the bearing out from the front (the band isn't crossing the bearing exit hole that way). I have the heavy and standard bands plus I made some of my own, so I swapped bands a bunch of times while testing. ... Also, just to be clear for anyone who comes along and reads this: The plugs insert opposite for tubes as they do for flat bands. I'm not suggesting anyone do anything different than the SimpleShot Hammer Video User Manual says. I've experimented with this device a lot and I'm even currently doing things with it that are probably (certainly) not approved by the manufacturer. User Manual here: czcams.com/video/rtq9XFQNWNg/video.html
Essential Gear & Useful Skills - thanks for your explanation, would be great to see some hunting vids with the Hammer, I like you really like this Hammer, have never invested any money for a SS but just couldn't pass this up
Which slingbow u think is stronger , chief AJ or this one ?
I know this is an older video, but as an upgrade to your idea of adding a fiber optic rod to the sighting notch. Just drill a hole from the top, in the center of the sighting notch, and screw in a tritium shotgun bead. It'll be lit all the time with no worries about there being enough ambient light to light up a fiber optic rod. It'll also be in your sighting notch you normally use, and not off to the side. You could also add more to either side if needed.
That's a great idea!
Why tube bands for the arrow launched?
The aiming notch on the side of the loop where the band is connected. The way your band is installed, how can you see the aiming reference notch if the band covers it when drawing? Will it not hold the bands in good enough if they're installed so they aren't folding over the fork and covering the aiming notch?
The bands are flat. The latex takes the shape of the notch. (Take a latex glove or a deflated balloon and stretch it over any item. It will take the shape of it and you can still see the physical details of the item ). That said: I don't necessarily use the notch as my point of reference to aim with. I use the farthest to the right point where my band makes contact with the fork. I'd imagine a lot of people would use the notch as their point of reference, but I'll also guess many folks find some other spot or even just the bands themselves to be easier or more accurate for them.
@@betweenfiveandseven Thanks a lot for the quick reply. I reviewed some pics of slingshots on the website & they don't appear to be strung with the band folding back over like that. I can see where that would give more assurity the band won't slip out. Do you think it's needed or is this how the instructions say to do it? I was interested in finding a way to attach some fiber optic tubes and if it must fold over the outside like that for some reason it would make it impossible to use for night shots easy with the fiber optic tubes. If you know or might try it I'm very interested to know. Thanks for any help you can provide
Why did you choose the LT head over the XT model heads? I'm trying to figure out which I want but don't understand the pros/cons I guess.
I'm wondering if maybe the hammer XT slingshot head would be better for the fiberoptic aiming point references you discussed as well?
When I bought mine, there was one choice for heads. The XT didn't exist at the time.
@@betweenfiveandseven oh ok. Didn't realize it was newer. I may grab the XT cause it looks easier to aim but IDK? Think the XT head is thicker and harder to slide into a pocket with that band mount style though. Choices
hows the hunting going with this was wondering if you have used the chief aj hfx as im at a loss which one to get between the two any thoughts you have would be welcome, only thing is the hammers bands heavy ones are 39lb where as the hfx are 50lb
I don't have a Chief AJ, so I can't compare. I will say though, that archery is a big topic. Arrow speed isn't 100% about how many pounds of draw. This video was way too long so a few things tested didn't make it in, but during testing I compared The Hammer directly to a 50lb recurve bow. The bow was able to get ~500 grain wooden arrows around 185fps and The Hammer with heavy bands was able to get ~400 grain carbon fiber arrows around 185 fps. If they are wearing the same broadhead, they are pretty much the same amount of deadly traveling the same speed. I hope that provides some perspective while you consider your choice.
really thats very helpful i thought the heavy bands were only just 40lb draw weight and about 170 fps where as aj states his 50lb bands only hit 186 fps so it would make the hammer beter draw to fps with the ability to still either shorten the bands to get more draw and fps or make even stronger bands would you agree
The weight of the arrow can be matched to the bands just like the size and weight of round ball ammo can be matched to slingshot bands. The sweet spot I found with the lighter bands was a 29 1/2 inch carbon fiber weighing 300 grains with a 75 grain head for a total of 375 grains. that got me around 165-168 fps consistently and at least a few 170+. With the heavier bands, the sweet spot seemed to be a 31 inch carbon fiber (31 inch leaves me a little room on my draw also just as a by the way) weighting 315 with a 100 grain head for a total of 415 grains. That got me pretty consistent results around 185 fps when I did everything right with my draw and release. When I was taping this video, my chrony was giving me trouble but I have replaced it. I've chonographed a few indoor shots since I got the new one and I'm pretty satisfied my numbers are close at least for my draw. Shorter or longer arms make a significant difference, so ymmv.
sorry about all the questions im a short guy only 5ft6 draw about 28 inches but i could shorten the bands to get similar results i presume i was leaning towards the aj slinbow mainly beecause there are mor videos about his in a hunting context taking deer and hogs and i hunt in europe so was lookiung for something competent enough to take hogs at 20 yards as im confident in my shooting and aim as im a former marine and have also shot alot of bows but wanted a new challenge so wantd a good hunting slingbow
I don't mind the questions at all. I wish I was able to answer regarding comparing the chief aj and the hammer. If this comes down to do I think hogs can be harvested with shots out to 60 feet with the hammer: Yes. I've produced pretty close to identicle penetration with the same tips on arrows between a 50lb recurve and the hammer and I have seen a lot of big game as large as elk and moose taken with 50lb recurves.
sweet slingbow
Thanks! It's a lot of fun!
Does the head move around inside the frame ?
No. In fact, without using a little graphite, it's really hard to remove the head because it doesn't even wiggle.
How many pounds does the hammer xt slingbow go up to? Can you hunt larger game like deer or elk?
They sell a couple of different weights of bands for it and you could certainly make your own bands as heavy as you are strong enough to operate. As to the available bands... Yes. They will launch a broadhead tipped arrow with enough velocity to penetrate some pretty big critters. All of the same considerations apply as they do with a compound or recurve bow (such as arrow weight, arrow length, your physical draw length, tip weight, etc etc etc). Shot placement and how close you have to get to be successful is up to the skill you can develop with it with practice and your natural abilities.
@@betweenfiveandseven ok cool. Thanks for responding!
Really liked your video, kind of like talking with someone you've known for awhile, who you like and know they're not slinging B.S. and actually know what they're talking about.
Good video, good information, good grief, keep em coming, but please no more "carnage de cans", just too brutal to handle for the average everyday guy.
Thanks for the kind words! I appreciate it. I'm glad this video was useful for you.
Love this vid. Lookout snowflakes is what you might as well of started with.i dont think I've laughed that hard ina long time. Best intro.
People have problems with accuracy due to size of pull tab...take out the pull tab...trace onto paper...increase size by 50%... Guesstimate where to put holes... Trace bigger pull tab onto suitable piece of leather, cut out and attach to d loop and have loads of fun without the blisters... A bigger pull tab allows a much better, secure grip and you can now easily pull back to full draw and let her rip with full confidence....trust me....if you do this you will be able to shoot 100-150 arrows in a single session without blisters and better accuracy....not to mention loads of fun!!!!!,,,When you got right size pull tab made....trace & cut out 4-5 extras and you will be set for a long time to come...This unit is just TOO MUCH FUN !!!!
What’s the poundage
I clicked out for the tomato paste can. Such a horrible scene
I thought that might be too much carnage for some folks ;)

I fully expect your best jokes when I tell you that it tastes just like beaver.
Is this available in the uk?
I think they ship world wide but the wrist brace might not be legal in the UK
@@betweenfiveandseven na wrist braces are fully legal here no laws concerning slingshots at all here

Yep, badgers are a badazz beast of an animal; even bears think so!
What state are you in?
Montana.
I’m a huge animal lover, but, I can respect any hunter who eats his prey. If they can process it too, then extra kudo to them. This is a superb bit of kit, and even though I’m a tin can kind of shooter, I am tempted by such an all round bit of kit.
Just call it end cap
How dareeeeeee you not show the hunting or unboxing pictured in thumbnail!
Why are you shaking?
That is cruel these poor can’s that can not run away?
It's very sensitive today 🤣
Please drink a few Redhill, before your video.🤩
I'm a savage hunter, but I would never shoot a bunny. Jesus man. ;^) Great video, got to try and get one of those bowshots.
Despite pseudo experts claims hunting large game with a slingbow is questionable at best and a massive bad idea at worst even if it is legal in anyones AO.
LOOK UP , INTO THIS SLINGBOWING THERES A GUY THATS KILLED A GRIZZLY 🐻 BEAR AND OTHER BIG GAME ANIMALS WITH HIS BOW 😁 LOOK UP GRIZZLY KILL WITH SLING BOW ??? 🤔
Let me ask you why are you hunting rabbits anyway I mean do you not have a source of food other than from the wild if you're living off the land and you live in a cabin c'est la vie
Because hasenpfeffer is delicious.
I have beef, pork, elk, deer, moose, trout, antelope, chicken, pheasant, duck, grouse, and goat in my freezer right now. I tend not to discriminate against protein sources.
Have a look at a few of my other videos and you'll discover that I was literally raised in a log cabin 20 miles from the nearest town. But I have to say: That has nothing to do with the fact that I hunt. Just until recently (the farm belongs to someone else as of about a year ago), we gave permission to pretty close to a hundred town folks a year to hunt our property. They harvested deer, elk, moose, black bear, mountain lion, antelope, pheasant, grouse, huns and dove, among other things likely including the occasional cottontail.
