Steel for targets, lead for game, clear glass marbles for windows.
lol
Ball bearing steel, is a very high quality steel, that not many people know, it makes the best steel for a hard use fixed blade knife. Its carbides cut really smooth and easy and it's my favorite steel to sharpen. It just likes to get sharp! It's also one of the toughest steels arround. I have tried almost all the high quality tool steels and super steels out there...but ballbearing steel, will always be my favorite. Whenever I see slingshot ammo, I always think of a hammer,smashing them into a blade stock!!!
@@greekveteran2715 damn you know alot lol. Imma check your channel to see if u got any vids. If not I'll just sub anyways lol. I have only just started to get into slingshot hunting and really need tips for getting good 🤣😅
@@greekveteran2715 without me 44 subs and no vids! How you do that wizard craft
@@charlieberry8056 I don't have any videos but I can help you on 3 different things, that I really know and have experience. For Slingshot hunting, you have to get a good slingshot, with flat rubbers (stay away from the round rubber ones, that are made from steel and plastic, they are not accurate at all, even the most expensive ones) So, get a flat rubber band slingshot, made of laminate wood or any hard wood! Then for ammo, I guess you know what you need. CZcams video and practice, help a lot. The diameter and the weight of the ball, determens the distance of the target. I mean, I would choose a more heavy ball, to shot at close distance and so on. Also the diameter of the ball, is another factor that will determine, what I'm going to shot. If I want to shot a glass window, then I choose a larger than 1mm diameter ball, to add to the power, that can break a glass easier. Be careful, I've seen steel balls, reflected from windows, back to the shooter! Always shot in an angle and don't be close to the target, except it's a Rabbit, that came in front of you! I'm also into blowguns, which is my favorite weapon, but fixed blade knives, is that what I know more about. I have huge collection, but I'm more a user trying always to find the best out there, than I am a collector. I don't "Baby" my knives, they all have been used for long periods, before I make my opinion on them. If I can help you more,please feel free to ask for anything I could possibly help. Thank you for your kind words.
Now that was a well spent 15 minutes. Very informative, thank you for posting.
I was thinking about making a slingshot video. You just inspired me to follow through! Thais was awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Yes do it! I'd like to see if it's a viable solution for a non-firearm hunting of small game.
Outstanding clear presentation of measurements and weights what delivers very good informations!
I even like the british humour....
Thanks and greetings from germany!
Awesome frames, great tests, and good ammo!
Great video Wayne as usual, you're one of the best, more videos please.
This is an excellent test and he's a brilliant shooter! Really really accurate. However, I think that it would be necessary to shoot many of the same balls before you can determine a pattern. For example, you shoot six or seven 8mm lead, then six or seven 8mm steel, and so on. That way you can see whether there's really a pattern or not. I think that's how statisticians study patterns. However, this may not have been the purpose of the video and it's an amazing experiment nonetheless. Thank you for it.
That is what i'm thinking. Multiple shots of same ammo to determine the average penetration of each size or type of ammo..
Stunning hats off to his shooting skill brilliant stuff....
Yes, I have several stunning hats, made by Steson and Resistol (in the same factory).
Top notch video! Very interesting results.
Absolutely brilliant to watch Wayne brilliant video. I'm going to get back into this hobbie again. Thanks
Good job field sports Britain and Wayne on the video top job as always and that 10mm lead surprised me alot I'm on 12mm steel with 3/4 butterfly draw
Excellent ballistic efficiency demonstration. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Hi! I did some statistics and calculations based on your Results:
Rank (Distance in Gelatine):
1. 10mm Lead
2. 11mm Lead
3. 11mm Steel
4. 12mm Steel / 9mm Lead
5. 8mm Lead
6. 8mm Steel
.
Rank (Mass):
1. 11mm Lead => 7.9g
2. 12mm Steel => 7.1g
3. 10mm Lead => 5,9g
4. 11mm Steel => 5,5g
5. 9mm Lead => 4,3g
6. 8mm Lead => 3,0g
7. 8mm Steel => 2,1g
.
Rank (Mass per Surface):
1. 11mm Lead => 2,1g / cm²
2. 10mm Lead => 1,9g / cm²
3. 9mm Lead => 1,7g / cm²
4. 12mm Steel => 1,6g / cm²
5. 8mm Lead => 1,5g / cm²
6. 11mm Steel => 1,4g / cm²
7. 8mm Steel => 1,0g / cm²
.
Unfortunatly there are no speed-values available. In combination with speed values it would be quite interesting how the different aspects influences the Gelatine-Rank.
.
Greetings from Germany!
Brilliant - thanks so much. / Charlie
@@fieldsportstv Yes, could you please repeat that with a chronograph and 5-10 rounds for each ammunition size to calculate an average?
Holy smokes I never seen someone so accurate with a slingshot, well done!
Search gamekeeper John
Search "Simple-Shot Slingshots", and learn from Nathan Masters; search "Fowler's Makery and Mischief" and learn from Zachary Fowler. Then there's Dan Ambrosius and Gamekeeper John. Enjoy your education!
Breathfire
I never said anything about him being “bad”.
My point wAs that the more aerodynamic the ammo, the better the flight. His mold maker needs a better sprue-cutter to eliminate the ridges which catch the air in flight on it’s way to the target. 😊
I'll third Fowler, he's a champion and he knows his stuff and his channel is not just slingshots, but airguns, bows etc. it's using them in the wild for catch and cook and other challenges like 30 day survival etc. It's a wide range channel and interesting.
@@snausagesmcgee3963 Interesting, I will have to check it out. I am still an amateur and experimenting, so I am all for trying different things and finding out what works best for me. Thank's for the tip.
No other words to describe other than beautiful, I love slingshot hunting I love catapults and the enthusiasm you been to the game, thank you for this.
Kendal Stewart thank you 👍
Thank you for this. Genuinely enjoyed it
Best illustration I've ever seen
I have never seen lead balls shot from a catapult into ballistic gel. Fascinating stuff, as Charlie says, the "Slingshot Solar System".
Good show, ol’ chap!
The physics of light / low velocity ammo is fascinating.
Great bud, moving to 10mm lead this winter. Went from 6mm which couldn't see the shot to 8mm. This test though for hunting, got to be 10 or 11mm lead shot. Thanks for sharing.
Will i still able to kill using 8mm balls?
Very interesting indeed. Awesome video
Tottaly good shots dude!👏

Well done gents. A pleasure to watch.
I'd like to see the results of each the different ammo with each of the different bandsets. That way we could plot them out as a line graph and get predictions on weights and bands that weren' t even tested.
Very surprising results and interesting to see and totally different to the ballistics I'm used to, , how near is the make up of the gelatin to the flesh of the quarry
Since there's so little difference, I'll keep using the steel as it is more "environment friendly" than the lead.
plus you want get lead poisoning
Lead always seems preferable to me when hunting near areas where ricochets might occur with steel. I find lead won't bounce due to deformation. 👍
@@mustafabassim2083 i had a lead .22 in my head for 5 months and didnt get lead poisoning ( my friend shot me by accident back in 2013 when i was 13)

@@erikrigt4294 hahaha let's just say I was lucky not to look up . I pre loaded a pellet in my hammerli 550 (was a crossman premier domed) but didn't cock it . Anyway we was fucking about and he thought it was unloaded but didn't check, cocked it and aimed it at me and squeezed that trigger. Nhs piece of shit didn't wanna take it out there and then so I had to wait from January to June to have it removed. Luckily no penetration into my skull , just the flesh so thank god for 12ftlbs . Toss pots called the police too because it's technically a firearm incident so was questioned by police and asked if I wanted to press charges. I'm just lucky I didn't look up when he called my name because I'm stubborn or else I'd have no right eye and probably disabled or even dead but I don't like to think about that. Gives me chills
Good video . Wasn't expecting those results ..
Yeah. A bit mystifying.
Physics. Excelent vídeo. Thanks for sharing.
Wayne's aim is unbelievable.
Me still using round or disc shape stones -.-
Me to
Me to
We do😅
The shot 8:48 moves the gel and wooden block.. if it was ridged the results might be more exact, very good stuff.
a live animal isn't restrained either.. so this is pretty accurate to what hunting penetrations would likely be....
Amazing accuracy.
I love that THUD sound
Great shooting!!
Wow, this dude is the nuts with a catapult! I'd struggle to match that with a recurve bow with no sights.
Stuart McCloud thank you mate. David is a good editor 😂👍
You sir are a master!
THIS IS SUCH A GENIUS VIDEO
I think squirrels like to use as small a shot as possible them having such small hands...
Good shot, friend. Search forever to see idols
Excellent video. But IMO needs to be repeated because you can see that because the gel block is not restrained, so when the balls hit the gel block it gets 'jolted', back a bit. This is particularly noticeable with the larger balls. This effectively reduces the penetration so skews the results . Repeat test and have a back stop for the gel. I suspect the larger balls will then show a higher penetration. This will be apparent particularly for the steel balls which have less mass / surface area & hence higher CoD than the lead.
Your muff cabbage. You think that's going to make a difference. Go kick cans.
What you said is true. More gel block should also be used, one block for each bullet.Almost because a bullet fired after the previous one could go further due to the channel already dug previously.
Very fun professional way of doing this Thank you!
I'd love to see him run the same tests with hex nuts, especially on the wax target.
I use to fill the center of m6 hex nuts with lead. Absolutely devastating when hunting
@@PrometheusFPV I would imagine so. Full metal jacket slingshot 😎
@@PrometheusFPV did this yesterday and today i've shot a pigeon and broke the head in half 😁
Very impressive!
Good video always enjoy the catapult content. Very interesting experiement busts some myths
Cool experiment....try one with fresh gels for every caliber. Cool piece to put somewhere in the wall
Juniper berries when they are not blossomed are AMAZING and FREE
Oh wow that's so smart, they're almost perfect circles and very hard
I used to use .410 cal lead balls, they were bloody good.
I still wonder if the 9mm lead would have faired better with heavier bands to give it a little more oomph? I thought it too would get passed them 10mm with the size of it and weight.
fyi 3/8 inch = 9.5mm and 1/2 inch = 12.7 mm - mentioned because these are common steel sizes in usa
Wtf did u say
So can we assume that the 12.7mm is close to a 50 caliber ball 10mm is about 40 caliber ball.
You can even hunt with a steel pellet from 6mm to 12mm or whatever you want.I only recommend the marbles to shoot cans and targets.
Excellent 👍
Thank you
Great Video,!!
That's sound at 5:09 when the 8mm lead hits 🤣
I find lead rolls used by locals maybe 200 years ago,, with my metal detector in fields. Lead is definitely a heavier hitter.
great stuff 10\10
Where do you get your blister gel
Great penetration test! I do still wonder what would be the best ammo for long range target shooting accuracy? Would the 8mm steel be the underdog in that case or would 8mm lead be preferred or even something more heavy? (these question are asked imagined the bands get maximized for every ammo type of course) And just a thought, I guess that if he would have shot a 10mm steel it could have beat or be in the same spot as the 11mm lead, right?! (considered that 11mm steel was deeper than 12mm I figure 10 might even top that) Or would 10mm steel land behind 12mm steel?! It would actually be the most important ball that could have been shot after this lineup, because it would go either second or third place or second last, interesting?! Also 9.5 or 10 would be more cost efficient and might be the preferred ball for my first question to be the best choice to not only cover penetration but also long range and accuracy?!
Perfect
Muito bom os ensaios
Doing a proper comparison they would have used each type of round with each type of band. I understand what they were thinking, but the scientific method is the best way.
Right. He was wrong with some of his estimations. Why should he be right with the bands...
I only use 10-12mm lead
It would interesting to know the speeds of the projectiles. As a kid I hunted with .250 diameter steel ball bearings (had a free supply) and had good luck with the easy to kill rabbits, sparrows, and starlings. Squirrels took a head or heart shot, tough little animals.
Wham-o wrist rocket
Very informative video, thanks
Got to match the ball size to the band size my preference .40 latex and 12 mm steel 10 mm led
.40 bands with 12mm steel, really? They would have to be some ridiculous tapers to even lob that ammo
@@neilclaydon2038 had this before check out pure latex in .40 simple shot can't get it any more I bought last 5 rolls it's not measured same buy yanks trust me throws it well

Awesome Wayne in your opinion is 10 mm lead ok for all round slingshot hunting ammo?
Yes
Good shootin wayne pal👍🏻,I wouldn’t be listen to the 7mm mr. Gucci that shoots paper and targets ! In a hunting scenario I’d defo be going your way about it.
When I was a kid, we lived in Cyprus the locals used a length of 1/4" Square brown
elastic, and a leather eye shaped patch, fitted with a thinner chamois pouch, they used to fill the chamois pouch with lead shot /pellets / marbles for bird / vermin shooting. We wrapped the elastic around our hands and over the thumb, many black nails later we got the hand of it.

Can it kill zombies?
Aldo Gutierrez yes, but not if you use 8mm steel 🤣🤣
Most likely. Some can kill a humans, and zombies are rotten and easier for the shots to travel through. Question is your aim, cause I know I wouldn’t hit shit
@@Charley-ju6yg really? Care to explain? Curious which bands and ammo can actually kill zombies
@@trexypoo5360 I can’t give any brand names or stuff like that unfortunately, as I’m not that far into slingshots.
