- Beards. Why do humans have beards? I've decided to grow a little bit of a fluffy moustache on my lip, so I figured I needed to address it. After having a little google and research, I came across some actually pretty interesting answers for why we grow beards - evolution, natural selection, dimorphic traits, peacocks, skulls...this episode has everything. Oh and a microscopic look at my facial hair...what's not to love?

Hate to tell you but that lumberjack was just an axe wielding hipster😉
Haha I was genuinely going to write “(this guy is probably just a hipster too...)” but the heatwave got the best of me!
Who is this man and why is he uploading on aspect science's channel
Sssshhhhhhhhhhhhhh don’t let the secret out!
Finally! Been waiting for the next aspect science vid, they really brighten my day
That’s amazing to hear :)
Explaining the newly grown beard with a video about beards, I like it.
Discount Christian Bale. *ding*
Seriously though, that 'stache looks great on you.
Half-off Bale donning a half-off stache
I'm so happy for the Hot Fuzz reference! HAHAHAHAHA!
Had to be done 😂
Whoever thinks women can't grow beards hasn't ever met my aunt Ruth.
Is she your great aunt, perchance?
This feels weird.
@@RickyMartinVideos she had a beard and it felt weird
@@41-Haiku oh yes it all happened the day I got my first tooth.
Really enjoyed this video! I feel like we got to see a new side of you which made it all the more interesting and felt more personal :) Great job, can't wait to see what's to come!
Dude, I already had a bit of crush on you at the beginning of your channel. But damn, that facial fluff is just 🙌🏻 amazing...
Very excited for the future of the channel too! Welcome back 😉
🤔 interesting . . . . .
welcome back & it is great to see you, Tom 😄👍 + love the fluff
I eagerly wait to see what you have coming up in the future
Great to see you are back!
Random thought:
Hair might help display personality, the best example I guess would be eye brows, the way your eye brows move express they way you are feeling to a deeper degree.
Maybe face and head hair is an extension of that, the length of hair and the colour shows what type of person you are.
It’s like visual pheromones if that makes sense.
Interesting...
Good to have you back man!
I've wondered about the science behind facial hair while shaving many times ... but then didn't ever look into it. Thanks for doing the work!
No problem mate! This wasn’t the most in depth video, I know, just a bit of fun to get the uploads rolling again! But I’m glad you liked it :)
Very cool, Tom. Can't wait to see what you've got for us :)
Dude this video was actually great.
The problem with the aggressiveness perception is that it's just correlation.
I can imagine the cause goes the other way, humans have learned to perceive beard as threatening because of some underlying cause such as higher testosterone levels which would also mean more muscles.
Besides if this is an evolved trait, it definitely comes from before people started shaving, so beard = mature male.
bro im so happy you made a new video. as a person who always have at least 3mm of fuzz on his face (i feel like my face looks stupid without facial hair), this is appreciated. also, very happy you're blowing up on tiktok. please don't forget your youtube children though lol
I really like this one! :)
man you have so good videos
Nice having you back! Is the meditation video still coming?
He's finally back
First time growing a beard and you hit me with this video. What a coincidence!
Ah nice! How’s the growing going?
Aspect Science Really good! Never thought I was capable of a proper one but all it needed was time and a little oil :)
Just found you today, and now I am subscribed. Love your content!
Hey I have a dumb question for you? Do you live in the UK as your accent makes it sound like you might?
Great to see you back man with a banger! P.S Julia is not sure about me with the beard
That moment of just: oh yeah, this guy... welcome back Tom! 😂
Haha it’s a shame I let it get to the stage of ‘oh yeah’, but hopefully you’ll stick around!
Aspect Science, I’ll stick around, no worries! 😃
Let’s goooo Stache Herd!
You look really good in your beard :)
wow, last time I watched your video you were at 20k....now 65k!
Stache looks great on you dude
Agreed
Tom, looking forward to more
Cheers Greg!
Long time no see bruv.
I trim arch my moustache op or same mirror
you rock that beard ;)
Very nice.
Not as cute as before but still cute! It's good to see you again! 🤗
Interesting .. May be that microscopic instrument could show details of a bushy beard on another person.
As for the purpose of beard.. I guess we may have to also consider what organs exist under that jaw area, like the organs in our throat area. What if the beard also protects those organs from UV rays of sunlight apart from the other perceived advantages.
The cooler and less sunny places may prevent too much growth of beard but may enhance the broad thick jaws for protection (of inner organs from UV light or fist blows). Just a possibility to explore.
Could be for protection from the cold as well?
There's another theory I've heard about beards and body hair, and why men of Southern European, Middle Eastern, and South Asian descent are generally hairier than their northern cousins. It has to do with climate. And the fact that body hair can be a liability in a climate cold enough for ice and snow to be abundant. Since moisture from the breath or from sweat can condense and freeze in one's beard and body hair, leading to frostbite and hypothermia.
I'd always thought that facial hair kept men of long ago warm in cold climates. Your perspective makes great sense though, and I know that people native to Alaska were pretty smooth.
Lol then explain the Philippines
Yes I too feel the beard may protect some organs in throat area from UV rays of sunlight. Colder climate guys may get an enhanced strong jawline to replace the beard, and so they may get less beard.
@@micahbell5871 what about Phillipines?
Scraping the barrel with this one
Haha! This was more of a joke instead of just saying ‘I’m back!’ Again haha
5:15 Are there any reinforced female bones, skull or otherwise, compared to males?
I don't know but my immediate thought was that there might be some structures related to childbirth that could be reinforced?
Probably hips or childbirth related structures.
Really can not understand how you aren’t winning at CZcams rn
The whole multiple, multi-month hiatus things probably don’t help haha
Deaam, thats a nice facial fluff!
Thats why Roy Nelson had such a long streak "not getting Koed" .. well until Mark Hunt
I actually looked for your video because I wasn't recommended your videos for a while. The algorithms broken again.
Aha it might also be down to how bad I’ve been at uploading! This was the first video in 3 months! Welcome back though :)
@@TommoCarroll welcome back to you my friend. Keep at it. 👍👍
your videos are so great but they get so little views :(
It's one of my favourite people! :)
He is back!... Beards?..... Beards!
I cannot grow face hair... This makes me sad
If i was the last person on earth I'd still have my beard, so it has nothing to do with "peacocking" or mating with me.
God bless, stay safe
By the way, I can't follow you on TikTok....
....as Indian government has banned TikTok😁
American here, and we'll be in the same boat very soon
I'm not a tiktok person, but if you really wanna use it use VPN on pc and go to tiktok site. Don't know if there is a tiktok app for Windows. Don't know if VPN fools Android app. But I can confirm it works with VPN with browser on Windows
No we can't access TikTok even though a VPN.....😂
@@RishiKumar-zv3lc you can. I tried. It works with touchvpn. I'm Indian too.
@@Steel0079 oh...I never tried this
But heard of this that it can't be accessed
You look like Bearett
Omg Tom has a beard! 😳 But what is her name? 🤔
The beard is okay, but the mustache is like a shadow on your face.
🧘
Imo.......u look more handsome than u already are with the stache....
THANK YOU FOR THAT HOT FUZZ REFERENCE!!!!!
Wait a minute, hold on, now, let me punch you in the face. Now shave and let me punch you again. See a difference?
Lumberjaks cosplayers
A proper beard gives a man more authoroty. This comes without attaching aggression. Just like big men is radiating more security. Don't need to be a pumped body builder for that either. The chubby, cozy bear has the same effect.
I’ve always wondered why males can grow beards yet females can’t
Testostorone stimulates hairgrowth, including facial hair. But the fight hypothosis is actually pretty awesome :D
Females can grow beards you just live in a society where its not acceptable that a woman has hairy face/legs/chest/arms and since around 1946 hairy tushes
Females can. Testosterone stimulates it.
@@thisremy DHT (dihydrotestosterone) destroys lives kids!
My problem is can't grow on the both side of my cheeks
Yeah tell me about it!
1:10 he has more tiktok followers than CZcams subscribers. Are you serious.
No, clean shaven faces are far better for taking a punch!! and the slicker the better. That's why in boxing and MMA fighter's faces get greased/vaseline between rounds. Hair = more friction. More friction to a blow = more damage.
40%... dude... why do boxers not exploit the sh*t out of this???
Haha, I was one of the raters haaha
He looks especially more like a hipster in this episode.
op
Sheep's skin and wool are not similar at all to even the most full beard.
I grow a very thick beard and can grow it pretty quickly. So I can experience both full many facial fur as well as baby smooth skin in short order.
I also used to train in MMA and did some fighting. Beards don't help at all. That fuzzy fluff doesn't make any difference.
You look older now....🙄
Bruh your beard colour is so much lighter than your hair colour
Haha I know 😂 so strange
if you shave it ill unsub
