BODY OF WORK!
Which of these are you most excited for?
Absolutely The Holdovers!!!
She's (Dakota's) funnier than I would've thought. The older she gets the more interesting I find her to be. I'm glad that she's made a name for herself and not used her famous parents' names to get her jobs in Hollywood like some nepo babies.
im kinda bias but im super excited for "everything else"
i just love Elliot so much and seeing a transgender person happy makes me happy too!!!
Hit Man
Dream scenario and hitman
Wonder how many more times Miyazaki is gonna convince everyone he's retiring just to say he isn't right after his "final film" comes out and makes gangbusters
Three?
It's a ploy at this rate.
I mean when you’re about 90 years old, everyone hits their stride….
@@Topdoggie7 Honestly? I don't think it is. He's just very old and I think he should. He just strikes me as someone who has a hard time letting go of what has been a huge chunk of his life.
@@vitinamorabito7283 Obsession and addiction is a cry for help, but given this is being used as a marketing ploy. It *is* a ploy.
Great recap! Also, Joseph of Egypt being arrested for not sleeping with Potiphar's wife, the stuff surrounding Lot, and David killing Bathsheba's husband all would predate the murder of John the Baptist.
Well there ya go, knowledge! (i tried fact checking that but, shockingly hard thing to google)
@@AmandaTheJedi Thank you for your continued amazing content. 😀
And I’m pretty sure the daughters who got their dad drunk to have kids happen pretty early.
@wolfwise1135 yeah, that's the Lot stuff (Old Testament after they leave Sodom/Gomorrah)
@@ShinySephiroth1 Ah, I wasn’t sure. Only heard it once and definitely only needed to hear it once.
Thanks for your sharing your thoughts, Amanda. I'm looking forward to seeing many of these films, especially "Close to You", and seeing Elliot Page in a male role, outside of "Umbrella Academy."
Close to You is definitely worth checking out!
Dumb Money captured the spirit of that particular time. I can relate since I got caught up with it. I had planned to buy AMC Theatres for $2 per share when GameStop blew up. A few months later, I bought AMC at $10 per share. When GameStop blew up again, I sold some shares of AMC, made $2,500 profit, paid off a credit card, and owed a big tax bill. Fun times!
Totally agree on Aggro Dr1ft. It was like you were playing GTA, inverted the screen, and took a bunch of shrooms. Every other scene had that demon guy randomly humping the air and the characters just looked lifeless (likely due to the infrared). I was at the midnight madness screening and saw a lot of people in the rows in front of me walk out.
yeah I heard a lot more people left the midnight than usual, that's usually the crowd that's gonna commit no matter what
If it's so bad why are you describing something that rules?
Sounds fuckjng awesome to me. Can’t wait for Aggro Dr1ft! Korine is a visionary!
Films with polarizing reactions are always bound to age well. Gummo was ripped apart when it was released and now it's on a large amount of top 10 lists for the 90's.
the woman who was on the dating show lucked out. after she chose the guy, she declined the date because after the show when they met and talked she told the producers he was weird and didnt feel right about him. she lucked out.
and the nick cage movie sounds like the "this man" creepypasta
I love film festival videos! Any excuse to make my extensively long watch list even longer is a great time for me.
the vampire one sounds like the most interesting one for me, that one and the game show one, will check them out
I had no idea Woman of the Hour was a thing! I remember hearing this story and honestly just being shocked so to know there's a movie about it coming out is wild to me. Netflix subscription might finally get some use again after all
I work at one of the theatres tiff runs out of, and I didn't see a single screening fail the Bulgari test, but you have no idea how much that ad got on on my nerves by the end of my 75 hour work week wow (saying r during the anti-piracy thing is a much better tradition)
What is the Bulgari test?
Google doesn’t help-what’s the Bulgari test?
Thanks Amanda for the awesome recap! I was actually planning on going to TIFF for the first time this year, but due to personal family reasons I couldn’t go. But I’m glad that your channel exists so I can hear all about the movies I had on my list. So seriously, thank you for making this video!
Also, have you ever considered making a video about how to attend TIFF and get tickets? It would be great to hear your insider recommendations if you have any. I would 1000% watch that video!
Love your film festival videos. Always give me new and interesting things to keep an eye out for.
Great video thanks jedi have a lovely weekend 😀
"This just wasn't the strong return to form I was hoping for from Watiti," is the most Canadian review I've ever heard 🍁❤
So far the movies that pick my interest from TiFF are The Promised Land, Hell of a Summer, Close to You, One Life, The Teachers' Lounge, Evil Does Not Exist, Seven Veils, Daddio, Hit Man, & Dream Scenario.
Thanks for this - timely here in Leeds as the Leeds International Film Festival programme is about to be launched, so looking forward to planning my festival
‘Quiz Lady’ had a fun trailer! I loved the comedic duo of Sandra Oh and Awkwafina.
29:04 I saw the trailer and I liked the vintage energy. Very ‘Dead Poets Society’ meets John Hughes comedy.
P.S. Yes to Dark Academia Cinema
😂 I was just watching Scream and thinkin about you haha
I appreciate you putting in the work to give us an adequate review for so many films.
I am SO excited to see Woman of the Hour!! Been looking forward to it ever since the first article I saw about it
the review is amazing, as most of your outputs are to us. Hardly getting a breath following your highspeed is part of it. But those occasional seconds throughout this video where you get almost thoughtful slow are like a new extra planet making the sky more lightful. Love.
Very poetic!
So happy you got to see the Holdovers ! I just saw it in theaters and I absolutely adored it. Do you think that you’ll make a video on it?
It's mildly strange to see you put out a video about TIFF after listening to my friend (a worker there) talk about the technical set up and stress and things. "Oh yeah this person who exists outside my monkeysphere and makes content I watch with some regularity was in the same space as my buddy who recently went on a rant about what's the best clipboard to use at a festival and how one of the workers fucking died between festivals."
bro WHAT
are you ok?
I love to watch Olivia Coleman get interviewed on The Graham Norton show. She's hilarious and a bit scatter-brained (her words not mine). She seems genuinely sweet and funny as a person not just as an actor.
She has been to Graham's show many times dude, one of them was when having Harvey Weinstein as the guest 😂
I am so happy to see actual films with real characters again rather than those money grabbing sequal blockbusters!
I watched Dumb Money on early release day and it was easily one of the funniest cinematic experience because the showing was packed with finance bros, audible reactions during the court hearing like it’s the avengers
I was looking forward to you mentioning "The Peasants" :(
Yeah, wonder what happened there
I'm very late buuuut
I'd be so glad if you put the title of the movie you're currently talking about somewhere in a top corner or something, I always try to remember the title but then I'm so entertained listening to you that I forget and have to go back (if it seems like one I'd like) and look for it again to put it in my list😭
Curious if you got to see the Stop Making Sense remaster and Q&A that happened at Tiff. It was the first time Talking Heads were all in a room together since at least 2002.
no sadly I wasn't there!
awesome video.
after hearing the premise of Fingernails i think they were going for something along the lines of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind because that is also based on the idea that you can change your brain chemistry, which theoretically you can alter your memories based on real scientific research done on mice.
i guess this one failed to stick the landing and Eternal Sunshine had quirky, imaginative scenarios going for it
Thank you for this
Great video as always. I was hoping you would talk about The Queen of My Dreams, a Bollywood inspired movie with queer themes that premiered at TIFF.
Great job!
Haven't seen Fingernails yet, of course, but have you seen Osmosis? It's a French show that mixes fairly hard sci-fi and romance. Basically, a company invents tech to find your perfect match, and we explore the lives of a fairly diverse cast of characters as the bigger story unfolds. Definitely worth a watch!
I’m most looking forward to The Critic because I usually watch Ian McKellen’s work and Hell of a Summer because I think a movie directed by two twenty year olds could be quite interesting.
Hey, Amanda. Sorry for the off topic, but I was wondering if you already had the chance to watch Aristotle and Dante Discover The Secrets Of The Universe, in the meanwhile. I'm still suffering because it seems like they won't release it here in Italy anytime soon, so... 😢😢😢
not yet sadly!
I am so excited for Woman of the Hour and His Three Daughters. Give them to me now!
All I want in film is another perfect masterpiece like Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. Does anyone know of anything that can compare?
This isn’t sarcasm I’m 100% serious. I need another one of these historical/paranormal bonkers movies. The Pope’s exorcist was a good start but didn’t quite do it for me
Pride and prejudice and zombies? It's not historical but its old timey...and zombies! I havent seen it so thats not really a recommendation though
hansel and gretel: witch hunters fits this genre i think
I concur on all 3 of these movies - they were so much fun.
Van helsing? The Hugh Jackman one
Alicia Silverstone in more media plz she’s fabulous
SHE IS! she was also really fun in the movie
Hello completely random but have you done a review on gunpowder milkshake it’s one of my favorite movies and I would love to hear your opinion on it.
Amanda, are we ever getting the Barbie review or did you skip it because of the strike?
I was hoping to hear about Chuck Chuck Baby - I’ve heard good things but also like warm
Would have loved to have gotten your take !
Great overview. Shirt suits you well.
Concrete Utopia was really good wish you'd gotten to see it
I had a ticket for it but the movie before ran late so I missed it sadly
I felt that same fucking way with The Boy And The Heron
Like I was in to about forty minutes and I was like "This ain't it but they'll clap."
i know a lot about the Dating Game story but had no idea it was a movie. by anna kendrick no less! i'm looking forward to it
Thank you!
My friend and I are both in the minority when we went to go see Boy and the Heron in theaters. There is some great animation and some great parts but as a whole it's very... disjointed.
Amanda’s favorite adjective: muddy 😭
Watched Bottoms, enjoyable; specially the girl that in not you. Every time she popped up I thought of you. ✌🏻
is dream scenario based on the "have you seen this man" creepypasta/internet mystery?? given the base plot and even how the main character looks it could be lol
Where did the SOuth by Southwest-video go? Would be interesting to see if Ziegler finally made a decent movie^^
I also was at the fest this year and we have very similar tastes. "His Three Daughters" was fantastic, every but as good as you said, one of my favorites, and "Quiz Lady" really impressed me even though it was a low-ambition comedy. I also didn't like "The Boy and The Haron" which felt extremely undercooked.
Also agree 100% with your takes on "Fingernails" and "American Fiction." Both great films with minor but obvious flaws.
The one place where we depart in our opinion was "Woman of the Hour" which I didn't like. It had such a great premise and good cast, but was extremely focused on maximizing the power of each scene, like a series of self-contained short films, at the expense of how any of them fit into the entire film. The non-linear structure was a great idea, but pacing was awful. It also did that thing where it "Hollywood fictionalized" parts of the story which really distracted from the true horror of the parts which were more honestly fictionalized, doing great disservice to the themes in the film. Lots of tone whiplash in a way that felt unintentional. It had first-time actor-director vibes and I totally get why it was picked up by Netflix because that's a perfect venue for it.
That one aside, so many absolutely incredible woman-directed films at the fest this year, dominating my favorites list, including "Anatomy of a Fall" and "Lost Ladies" and "Green Border."
OH MY GOD, CARLOS FROM YTV!!!!! :')
I have a job interview at a GameStop store in Aus haha I love the store and formerly worked there but I always keep the Reddit stock fiasco in mind 😭
I'm disappointed that you didn't see Dicks the Musical I want to hear your thoughts on it
love your thoughts queen, but is the boy and the heron the beau is afraid of studio ghibli?
Bottoms Love, please 🎉
Me and my bestie see all anime and the boy and the heron WE AGREE WITH U there are a lot of missing info and plot points that make no sense! I only seen this and Ponyo so far and asked her are all his films missing from plot points and slightly confusing? We needed more BACK STORY on THE AUNT. The Birthing room The Heron why the mom was young the uncle there were SO MANY gaps u had to fill when u get 2/3 thru u start to get lost. Still a good watch and visually great but then it just ends like see ya!
My top anime movie of the year is still SUZAME
If you like NZ comedies,I have to know if you ever caught the 2006 film Black Sheep. It seems like you would dig it.
26:21 I loved Nicolas Cage in the trailer. He’s a delight 👏🏽
Not loving "The Boy and the Heron" is not gonna be an unpopular opinion, I think. It was also welcomed with many mixed reviews in Japan. A friend says he heard someone whisper something akin to "well that was bad" after a screening he went to. Me and my boyfriend were also like "well... that was... a movie..." afterwards. A coworker and my landlady's son were also "meh" about it.
I am honestly a bit nervous about it getting a wide release...
kinda wish you watched When Evil Lurks!
The gasp I guspt at The Boy & The Heron reveal.
American Fiction was filmed 10 minutes away from my house so i walked over to watch Jeffery Wright get into a car for half an hour, it was awesome
So, I haven't seen Woman of the Hour, but Rodney Alcala (or however you spell it) actually won The Dating Game show but the woman decided not to go on a date with him when they met after the show because he creeper her out.
Ima wait till these come out and watch them all simultaneously
The Boy and the Heron is NOT unpopular. So many of us didnt like it bc it seems like something Miyazaki hated making
Please I need the Fair Play review!!!!!!!
i know one of my best friends was key grip on one of these productions provided it was filmed in toronto
14:08 “which the movie states is one of if not the first recorded sex crime in Biblical history” oh if only that were the case. *side-eyes the entire Old Testament*
Little sad you didn't go watch Hey Viktor!
22:20 I said it’s like ‘Severance’ but make it romance.
Thought you’d appreciate that my brother named his himbo cat TIFF after the festival. TIFFs 2 braincells are hanging on by a THREAD 😂
oh God Harmony Korine now that’s a name i haven’t heard in a while
Really wish you'd time stamp every individual film, have to keep going back to get the names again. Sure my issue but, also a fair enough request I believe.
Seems like on the whole the best still weren't top tier, so I'm glad you still got a top 10.
I've only seen 1 other review for The Boy and the Heron-5 stars-so this makes it a 3.
Dumb Money wasted no time jumping from TIFF to my theater.
yeah Dumb Money was always supposed to be a 'pre-premiere' to the planned wide release
I think I would have had a stronger top 10 had I not already seen so many of the movies at the festival but still some surprises!
There's always going to be a lot of people who give a Ghibli film 5/5 regardless of content or quality. I think YMS gave it a 6/10?
@@born2hula325 I guess the article I saw was a rare case of going through the details of the cinematography, feelings and messages.
Wow.
I’m with you on Boy and the Heron, in fact I’m pretty sure I disliked it even more. I also liked Dream Scenario but raised an eyebrow at its intentions. But my Top 3 favorites would probably be Woman of the Hour, Boy Kills World, and Monster.
I’d love to see your opinion on Belle
Personally, I love the music but a lot of the story is messy.
The anime movie? Because if so I totally agree
@@feferis - Yes! I was so hyped for the movie and was sort of disappointed. The visuals and music are great but the story needs work on the second half.
wooo movies
4:50 Trichotilliomania is something i have and something i didn't expect to hear or see in a movie, gonna have to check this movie out because can relate to anxiety induced picking/pulling
Great fucking commentary. You've definitely helped with my movie watching schedule for the next few months. Thank you.
Next Goals Wins and the new Ghibli are my most anticipated out of this.
'Winklevi' killed me 💀
For a second i thought this was about the Ultimatum Queer Love contestant
Would you ever go to Slamdance?
I hate that i have to even admit this but Humanist Vampire seeking Consenting Suicidal Person... reminds me of an Evan Hansen AU fanfic from Ao3 where Evan and Conner both find each other on a website about suicide *i forget the finer details but the gist of it is they both wish to unalive and so they both make a promise to see it through together and do things theyve always wanted to do before dying and then end up falling in love... and not dying obvi*
is His Three Daughters loosely based on Chekhov?
Bastard is also an insult in Danish and used in pretty much the same way, it's just pretty old fashioned.
Boy and the heron !
CFCR?
How do you manage to travel and get into so many festivals? I would love to do that
the rare non villan mads
I always found it somewhat appropriate that the event's acronym is TIFF; which is a word that means a small disagreement or argument. Because it always seems slightly disagreeable but not in a way that particularly bothers you for long.
1:58 Whoever watched this movie should’ve watched ‘Kill’ during the Midnight Madness.
Kill is one I'm still bummed to have missed! Just can't hack those midnights anymore when all the press screenings start at 8am, I'm old
@@AmandaTheJedi Watching movies at midnight is an extreme sport, yes.
Amanda should try acting; she does such a great job recreating Travis Scott’s acting
wasn't she in bottoms?
Finally someone who liked Fingernails.
